The Flyers comeback only made #2? What’s #1? Cliff Lee? Prisoners of the moment, I guess. Flyers comeback to me is #1 story of 2010, because it’s only been done one other time in the history of the NHL and 3 times total in all of professional sports in a 7 game series.

I don't know what the fans do to create that much more volume and excitement in the stadium, but it's definitely something extra [in Philadelphia]. They're passionate fans. They understand what's going on. They don't need a teleprompter to tell them to get up and cheer. -Cliff Lee

Yeah, even as a baseball smoe, I conceded to the Flyers. The odds were just astronomical. And once you framed it in the context of that rollercoster, injury laden season which came down to a Boosh save in a shoot out….I mean come on, I lost a few year of my life courtesty of Team Defib- Abilify.

by j reed on Dec 30, 2010 3:13 AM EST up reply actions

It’s been done three times in the NHL actually, us, the 1975 Isles, and the 1942 Leafs. Dirty Sox being the only non-NHL team to accomplish the feat.

by Derek F on Dec 30, 2010 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I got my sports mixed up, but either way—it’s not done very often. Teams get high priced free agents all the time, even if it usually isn’t in Philadelphia.

I like when it’s up this early haha. Forget the timing thing. I too am wondering what was number one. Couldn’t find the main article but it seems like they’re running it like a series up to the new year? doubleh, lee was number 3.

Can’t try and shop Leighton around if nobody sees him play. Ok, it’s a stretch, but let me have my delusions.

Funny

I read the Inky article about Jody Shelley in print this morning and noticed the following:

  • Shelley forfeits a nice chunk of change for his wayward fist
  • The byline tells us the report comes from El Segundo, CA

That’s right, folks. Jody Shelley left his wallet in El Segundo.

He came up in your face OOPS POWE SURPRISE!"

I just want to say I love the Islanders. They snap Cindy’s point streak. I might have to buy there sweater just for that. Otherwise they suck just like he does. LET’S GO FLYERS…..

Nice to see some attention given to goalies other than the top 3. Does anyone know where Kovar stands within the organization? If he were playing in North America what level would he most likely play at? Any update available on Backlund’s injury status? What about the Swedish kid everyone was high on? How about a story on Riopel’s adjustment to the pros? Whatever happened to Morrison, DeSerres, etal? What was Homer’s rationale for signing Stewart?

I know that’s a lot of questions but I’m being totally serious here and would like to see some answers. If we trade away either Leighton or Boucher one or more of these guys will be affected.

by mtitanic on Dec 30, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

We let DeSerres go by the way

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Dec 30, 2010 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

We interviewed John Paddock over the summer, focusing specifically on the goalies.

This is what he said on Kovar:

“He has to improve and continue to improve and he takes the next steps after that. So we’re going to wait and see with him and hopefully he can play more and get going along with the recovery road a little bit for his injuries and progress towards playing pro hockey,” Paddock said.

But after being drafted four years ago, is there a time limit on how long he stays property of the Flyers? Paddock answered, “I’m not sure of his age or whatever, but at some point you have to make a decision. I don’t know whether it’s next year or two years from now, I’m just coming to the organization, this will be my third year, and second as a manager, I’m not sure what year he was drafted. It’s not an indefinite time, that’s changed, so sometime in the next year or two he’ll have to give us some reason to move ahead and we’ll have to do that if that’s the case.”

Now, maybe Paddock has just never been asked about Kovar before, but when you pull out the “this is only my third year in the organization” card to explain why you don’t know much about the player, that’s generally not a good sign. If Kovar can’t unseat Roman Turek this year, he’s likely done in the Flyers organization.

Good news? They have to know about him at this point.

Eriksson had a rough start to his SEL career, started adjusted, but he hasn’t played since Dec. 11th. Teemu is your guy for updates on him.

To continue:

No update on Backlund I’m aware of.

It’s tough to judge Riopel behind such a crappy team, but he just go this first AHL shutout, even though he gets hung out to dry by his defense a lot. Good news? His save percentage is barely below Backlund’s.

I have idea about Morrison, which kind of makes me sad. Travis interviewed him awhile ago, so I wonder if he can answer that question.

No idea why they signed Stewart, but I think they grabbed him last year due to Backlund being with the Flyers and the Phantoms needing guys to finish their season. Why the NHL contract? No idea. I think Tim McManus or Paddock (in our interview) said something about him having good natural ability, but needing to learn the game. A project, if you will.

And yes, DeSerres was let go.
