to the tune of My Favorite Things
Dan Carcillo, Claude Giroux-oux
hockey fights, nice dekes too
Powe and Betts making you sting
These are a few of my favorite things!
When Shelly scores, when Crosby sings
When I’m feeling sad,
I simply remember
my favorite things
and then I don’t feel so bad!

When has Crosby sung? I seriously doubt it has happened because if it did it would be on the front page of NHL.com for weeks, and probably be #1 in the top goals, saves and hits of the year clips.

Actual things. Like, he’s not just repeating what happened on the ice. He’s describing plays with reasonable truthiness. And as of yet he hasn’t said a word that doesn’t exist.

With that little time, it is very difficult for the brain to process info in “real time”.
I’m guessing the clock was correct but our reaction was slow.
“It says 0.5” says our brain. We then take .6 seconds to look at the goal crease.

I’m mad that the team quit on the shootout though. Not saying Bob did, but it looked to me like Briere and G made lackluster attempts

Is Bob ever going to learn to not go down so quickly. He makes it cake to score high on him.

The goal that wasn’t hurts.
But to not do something after leading 4-1 should hurt more.

Yes, I came in as Richie was uh, not scoring.
What happened in the three goals? The thread above wasn’t clear. Was this a defense collapse or a Bob collapse or just a great Sharks period?
Thinking about asking my employer for an 11-year contract.
Trade Leighton.
First one Bob couldn’t do much about, screen + deflection + great shot. Other two were on sustained powerplays (even though the second one was technically on ES, Carter was barely out of the box), I can’t say the PKers were particularly strong. We were really struggling to clear the zone.

This isn't good
Up to now, the PK was the best part of Flyers’ special teams.
It will be very bad if the PK also goes in the tank.

At least you watched the second period, I could only tune in for the third.

Worst loss of the season, easily.

Giving up a 4-1 lead in the 3rd period at home is beyond a disgrace. They quit. Simple as that.

The refs sure did a great job for the Sharks late in the 3rd.

I know. But the Flyers put themselves in that position. The refs sucked for sure. But they should not have been the difference.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
No, the difference was blowing a 4-1 lead at home with less than 13 minutes left.
Oh, and the power play was atrocious.
The officials and the game clock did not lose this game. The Flyers did.
They were lucky to come away with two points – let alone one – on Long Island this past Sunday. This game better have woken them the hell up.

^ This.
You can’t be a competitive team if you are giving up multiple goal leads time and time again. Happened in the crazy TB game, happened again here. The kicker is the Flyers were dominating the first period and completely give up by the third
They are a competitive team. how many times have they given up multiple goal leads? And how does this number stack against the rest of the league? In otherwords are you seeing something that’s rather common or not and if not how significant is it.
They are missing at least 4 points they should have from 2 games they gave up multiple goal leads (off of the top of my head, TB and this game). The Washington game they let them come back twice and gave them a free point. Elite teams can close out a game with a lead. ESPECIALLY a 3 goal lead with 13 minutes left in a game that the Flyers were dominating
Would you call the Capitals an elite team?

As of the last 3 years finishing in the top 3 of the conference, yeah I would for the regular season. Sure they haven’t done anything in the playoffs but they at least are playing hockey during the season that gets them there. Not saying the Flyers haven’t had a steady stream of post season births, but its these types of games that cause you to have to limp into the playoff as an 8th seed instead of in 1st.
If the Capitals are such an “Elite Team” (something you insist the Flyers are not because tonight happened), then how do you explain this?

One game doesn’t say anything. A point I believe you said.
I’m saying the Flyers can BE an elite team if they stop fucking up games like this. There’s a reason they have not had home ice advantages in the last couple playoffs.
On paper the Flyers should win the cup, but in reality when they play lackluster 3rd periods and let teams come back when they should have closed them out. That’s what makes them a very good team but not entirely elite. They have great stretches but then they have REALLY BAD stretches.
There’s a reason they have not had home ice advantages in the last couple playoffs.

caps: 3rd, 2nd, 1st

you know home ice aka finishing 1, 2, 3, 4th seeds.*
If the flyers are an elite team shouldn’t they be finishing in one of those spots? if the points you lose out on by not winning these types of games move you from 6th seed to 3rd seed
*Now I know that doesn’t mean anything because the playoffs can be completely crazy in terms of outcome.
Not only have you mis-interpreted the points I have tried to make, but you have no knowledge of very recent Flyers history. I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul.

What point did you even try to make? Quoting movies doesn’t help bolster your argument.
ok well they why wouldn’t you call the caps an elite team?
The point I tried to make was every team, no matter how good or bad has bad games and bad losses that they should have won. You said:
Elite teams can close out a game with a lead. ESPECIALLY a 3 goal lead with 13 minutesAnd I pointed out the Caps-Leafs game from yesterday because here is a team that you consider elite, yet they blew a 3 goal lead in the last 16 minutes of the game to one of the worst teams in hockey. It is not to say that the Caps are or not elite or that the Flyers are or not elite, just that shit can happen to the best of teams.
You also said:
There’s a reason they have not had home ice advantages in the last couple playoffs.and multiple times I tried to get you to recognize, clarify, and correct the epic fail of this statement, but you have done neither. Are you talking about the Conference Quarterfinals or all playoff series in general? I hope to everything holy that you were just talking about the conference quarterfinals because the Flyers had home ice advantage in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals when they played the 8th seeded Canadiens. D’OH!

Point out where I specifically said the Capitals were not an elite team. While you are at it, also point out where I said the Flyers were an elite team. Like I said above, you mis-interpreted my points.

Hold up I’m confused. 08-09 we surrendered home ice advantage in the last game of the season because of a frustrating game against the Rangers where we gave up the lead twice. The Penguins proceeded to hold their two home games and the way they played in those two set the tone for the series.
In 09-10 ironically we had home ice advantage for the eastern conference finals, but don’t expect to have that sort of thing happen again if you get into the playoffs as the #7 seed. Not very often a #7 and #8 seed match up in the ECF. Apart from that we didn’t have home ice advantage in any of the other rounds.

You are absolutely right. I was more bothered by lazerwolf’s failure to recognize the Flyers had home ice advantage in the 2010 ECF, something that I hope every Flyers fan would remember and cherish. It was only one instance, but a quite memorable one that I would hope is rather unforgettable. Something lazerwolf sadly seemingly did forget.

Usually I’m on the “shit happens.” Side of things. But they did this late last year to the Thrashers, too. They’ve given up more 3 goal leads in the third period in a short few months than the Sharks have had three goal third period comebacks in their franchise history.
Shit does happen. In an 82-game season, you are bound to be on the receiving end of some tough losses. I care more about how they respond to the shit, then the actual shit. If they go on a 10-game losing streak, then we can be concerned. But if they go out tomorrow and deliver a solid 60-minute ass-whooping to the Maple Leafs, who will give a flying fuck about an overtime loss to a Western Conference team?

While I agree that the season is long and one blown lead isn’t a cause for concern. They’ve already made a couple previous games closer than they should have been. If they trash the Leafs, then great that tells you they can win against a far worse team. Its the teams on par and above that you want to be holding onto the lead and winning those games.
What team over the course of an 82-game season DOESN’T have multiple games where they lose games they should have won? Seriously. It is an 82-game season. Each team is going to be faced with “shit happens” moments. If the worst shit the Flyers have this year is a an overtime loss to the Sharks, then we are doing pretty doggone well for ourselves.

While true, I’m getting sick of that excuse. BRiere gets hauled down several times, smashed into the net, and then it’s “Ohhh, you have to control your stick there mister.” Okay, Zebra, I’ll control my several feet of lumber when your fucking Fin-headed friend controls his goddamned arms.
What was really sad was the penalty before that, the cross check on Carter, watching the replay the ref down low who’s 20 feet away didn’t call that. Clearly looking right at it, doesn’t think it’s a penalty. The guy 100 feet away calls it. And then after calling penalty after penalty for the last ten minutes, the first few minutes of OT is whistle in pocket. Then they call that crap on two guys? Ridiculous.

Red Flag
I’m starting to be a little concerned.
I thought a shitty defensive game like the one against Tampa was a fluke that we’d never see again.
Look at this fucking game, though.
Up 4-1 with less than 13 minutes left and they can’t close the deal.
Granted, the Lightning and Sharks can score lots, but so will just about every team that makes the playoffs.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
We should just forfeit against the Sharks from here on out. The Flyers will play 80 or 81 games every year, and they’ll begin with 1 or 2 OT losses – and the Sharks with 1 or 2 wins.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
We’re never happy at the end of Sharks games, that’s for sure. In last year’s game thread, you said you even turned it off before it was over. They’re always deep, painful, deflating losses, rather than just bad losses.
by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 8, 2010 10:25 PM EST up reply actions
I remember that, yeah. At that point the Flyers were down 6-3 and there were like 6 minutes left in the game. Plus it was late and I was tired.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I had gone back and look at the thread because I thought I remembered someone saying last year that the Sharks loss was the worst loss of the season, but I was wrong about that. But I spotted what you said last year while I was looking.
by DragonGirl0583 on Dec 8, 2010 10:30 PM EST up reply actions
Nah, wouldn’t have been me. I think one of the worst losses last year had to be the one to Minnesota in March.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
so how long has it been this way? you see that stuff with teams and it’s easy to say there’s really not alot to go on sample size wise but it also seems that with personnel changes that the pattern would change which leads me to believe their might be a some strange team group think that causes them to struggle. like the phillies and the stros.
You could be right, insofar as the Flyers and Sharks were concerned.
My larger concern is the shitty defensive play against high-powered teams. That has nothing to do with group-think a la Phillies and Astros.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’m literally staring at the computer screen, trying to come up with words to express my frustration, and I can’t think of any.
You looking for suggestions?

One last time, with feeling:
I HATE THE SHARKS!
I hope to God that somehow, we end up playing them in the Finals, and we’re up 3-2 in the series, and we have home ice advantage, and we’re at their rink for Game 6, and they have a 4-1 lead with like 5 minutes to go, and we tie it with like 30 seconds left, and then we win it on a Mike Richards shot that crosses the goal line with 0.1 second left.
And I hope Niemi is in goal for that, too.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
The bright side
The Flyers played a Western Conference team and got a point out of the game. Not the worst thing in the world. Sure how it happened was not pretty, but would you rather lose 5-0 and look like a sorry excuse for a college team for an entire 60 minutes?
Hey, the Capitals lost last night in a shootout to the fucking Maple Leafs after having a 4-1 lead in the 3rd period. Sharks > Maple Leafs.
The Flyers play tomorrow against said Maple Leafs. Let’s forget about this one and focus on beating Toronto.
