Game 54, Preview and Game Thread: Philadelphia Flyers at Calgary Flames
#6 Philadelphia Flyers (27-23-3, 57 pts) at #8 Calgary Flames (27-20-8, 62 pts)
Pengrowth Saddledome - 9:30 PM ET - Calgary, Alberta, Canada
TV: CSN Philly HD, Rogers Sportsnet West
Radio: 610 WIP, XM 206
This is the open game thread.
Get the Calgary perspective at Matchsticks and Gasoline
The Flyers kick off a largely unhyped western swing tonight in Calgary, against a Flames team that recently got a whole lot less ugly with the subtraction of Olli Jokinen. The Flames haven't been playing well at all lately, and have undergone a huge amount of turnover recently (as Travis detailed earlier today).
Lukas Krajicek makes his debut for the Flyers tonight, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that the bar is set fairly low for this new #8 defenseman. As long as he's not horrendous, I'll be pretty happy.
The Flames are my (distant) second favorite team, so I'm hoping for a fairly non-demoralizing loss for them tonight.
After the jump, questions to be answered at some point in the near future, as well as all your comments, insights, and anything else you need to get off your chest.
Questions to answer:
- Braydon Coburn's hometown is Calgary. Does he celebrate the homecoming by doing something expected (scoring a hat trick in the opening five minutes) or something more expected (having three Calgary goals bank in off his skates in the opening five minutes)?
- This Krajicek guy -- he any good?
- Has Ray Emery learned to control a rebound yet?
- Do the cameras catch anybody in the arena wearing an Atlanta Flames throwback jersey?
- Are the Panthers and Flyers still tied at the end of the night?
It's a late night for us in the East, but hopefully worth staying up for. Go Flyers.

I hate all Canadian teams, but can stand the Western ones more then the Eastern a little more.

As of noon today, Jokinen and Prust were still on the team and were on the ice earlier in the morning, preparing to play in Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Still, the tension in the air was palpable whenever you turned. Neither Jokinen nor Prust spoke in the dressing room following the morning skate; and when Jokinen came off the ice, he looked decidedly unhappy.

Awww...
Joker’s unhappy, eh? Maybe my musical tribute will cheer him up.
(To the tune of “Sugar Magnolia” by the Grateful Dead):
Locker room cancer, blossoms bloomin’!
His head’s an ellipse now and he don’t care!
He saw the Flames go down in the standings,
Knew he’d have to soon get out of there!

No offense to you and your distant second favorite team but I am really hoping the Flyers take this team to the wood shed.
They’re my second-favorite team, too.
Obviously I’d much rather the Flyers win. I just want a solid win with no injuries, BS from the officials, or unnecessary drama.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Why the Flames? Just curious. Mine is the Aves, liked them ever since the season they moved to Colorado. Forsberg as my favorite player…day he signed with the Flyers was one of the happiest days of my life, sad he was disappointing as a Flyer.
I’ve liked the Flames ever since I was old enough to understand two things (this was back in the 80s):
1. The Oilers were better than we were, especially in the playoffs.
2. Geographical rivalries existed outside of the Philadelphia area.
The two teams I hated the most growing up were the Oilers and Rangers. When I discovered the Battle of Alberta, I decided that The Enemy (Calgary) of My Enemy (Edmonton) Was My Friend. I eventually began to root for them just because they were who they were. My fandom was sealed back in 1989 when my best friend went on a school trip to Montreal and he swore up and down that the Canadiens would win the Cup. I put my money on Calgary and they did not disappoint. (I especially wanted them to win since I liked them anyway, but even MORE SO after what Chelios did to Propp in the semifinals.)
On top of all of that, the Flames had Doug Gilmour, who is my all-time favorite non-Flyer.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
first game i ever saw at the spectrum was flyers/calgary.
i remember zezel scoring one to make it 3-2, calgary. we eventually lost the game, but i was hooked.
and yes, chelios elbowing propp made me a big fan of calgary that year. still a little ticked they got ref’d out of a cup a few years back

My first game I ever saw was also at the Spectrum and was against the Flames too.

But injuries, BS officiating, and Drama are what the Flyers are about. How can you expect anything less.
"NO HONOR"
As for the questions:
1. Neither. He plays a quietly effective game but doesn’t score or majorly screw up.
2. Better than OKT, as advertised. That’s about it.
3. It would be fairer to ask “Does Emery REMEMBER HOW to control a rebound,” in which case, no, he does not.
4. Maybe not, but the “A” on Calgary’s Alternate Captain jerseys are actually the Atlanta Flames “A.” So the answer is “Kind of, but not really.”
5. I hope not, because I hope the Flyers win.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Crosby just pulled a Giroux (giveaway along the boards in the offensive zone, leading to odd-man rush) Sabres up 3-1.

It was bad enough when Crosby was just setting guys up and getting goals every so often, no the guy is going to score 50 goals on top of being an excellent set up guy…Sid the Kid is destined to rape the Flyers for the next decade.

So how about Homer still talking to Waddell about Kovalchuk? And when did these game threads get so busy? Wasn’t more than 10 months ago that I could log on forty minutes prior to the opening faceoff and not have already missed 30 comments — pretty awesome the growth BSH has seen.
Really, I just got here and was wondering what I had missed also.

He’s nuts if he only plans to get Kovy as a rental. If he can sneak a “must occasionally backcheck” clause into a deal with a cap hit of $8-9m and not $11.36m while not trading any of the good prospects, then we’ll have to see.
Is that even possible?

NBC did something like that the year after the lockout. They would do time on pp to score a goal. For example, the Flyers needed 8 minutes and 22 seconds of pp time to score a goal. It was a much more accurate stat cause it accounted for the short pp’s. I wish it caught on.

You know, I’ve kinda been thinking about this whole “60 minutes” cliche we keep repeating. If you are playing an NHL team, and you dominate them for 60 minutes isn’t that more on them? I mean honestly in professional hockey with an 82 game season it isn’t going to happen.
by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 1, 2010 10:52 PM EST reply actions
its not about dominating, its about getting rid of the whole play a good period and a half and then fall asleep and relinquish a 2 goal lead night in and night out
We are like 23-1-3 when leading after 2 periods.
by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 1, 2010 10:56 PM EST up reply actions
I hear what you’re saying, but like njh said, it’s not about dominating for 60 minutes, it’s about playing 60 minutes. Even if you’re stuck in your own end, you’re winning battles and keeping the puck outside the dots.
But you’re never going to play 60 minutes for an entire season. There will be letdowns.
