Lines

Fellow Philly Fanatics,

My first post so hope this isn't an overdone post but in order to make any noise, obviously our top lines need to get going.  I think our 3 & 4 lines are sound, especially with Giroux at Centre, where he seems to make a difference compared to wing.

How about:

Gagne, Richards, Briere

Hartnell, Carter, Powe

Leave the 3 & 4 lines as is.

I don't necessarily think every line needs a grinder.  Why not a "skill" line (Richards line).

My beleif on the Carter line is that since Carter is almost always going to shoot, why not have 2 net crashers in Hartnell & Powe?

One other thing to consider is maybe reuniting Briere & Giroux with Gagne & drop Richards to the 3rd line.  It would give Giroux some additional confidence and maybe get Richards back to thinking  Defense first.  Don't get me wrong, Richards is my favorite Flyer but maybe this would get him out of his current funk.

Any thoughts?

Just wanted to say that you have possibly the greatest avatar ever. And I wouldn’t put danny and Richie on the same line, too much passing. Giroux wasn’t a good fit there so i can’t assume Danny would be any better.

(First off, I second the props for your avatar)

I wouldn’t mind seeing Gagne-Richie-Briere given a shot at some point, but I wouldn’t have earth shattering expectations before actually seeing what they could do. Gagne has excelled over the years when having a really dynamic center, but Richie in the middle with a naturally dynamic center playing the right wing hasn’t been a great fit. Gagne and Giroux have had flashes of brilliance together, but I think those flashes have been predominantly in situations where there is no third player in the mix, like an odd man rush. To put them together successfully or to reunite Gagne and Briere like 2 seasons ago, the thing missing is the guy down low and in front, the Mike Knuble factor. Gagne-Briere-Knuble and Gagne-Forsberg-Knuble were both gorgeous lines when all the players involved were healthy, which never lasted long enough. But Gagne-Richie-Knuble wasn’t too shabby either, so maybe we just need to get back to having guys down low and in front on the top lines and everything would be okay. I’m rambling, so I’ll stop now.

Carter at RW!!!

Of all the guys they have played out of position specifically Briere and Giroux at the wings why hasn’t Carter gotten some time on the wing? He is a sniper and not half as dynamic with the puck as Briere or Giroux. Also he is a big enough boy to crash the net after his shot, he won’t actually touch anyone but getting to the crease faster might see him putting more close goals in the net. I like that idea.

Christ, I’m not a stat guy, I just watch hockey and evaluate what I see. What is Giroux chopped liver? It is worth a try seeing as I would rather have Briere and Giroux as centers and Carter on a wing for his shooting and size if I cant move him for a winger or cap space.

I do agree that Carter should be given a run on the wing.

Carter actually plays defense too. Not so sure I want my 2nd and 3rd line centers to be Giroux and Briere, especially Briere.

Briere 1, Giroux 2, Richards 3

I like going with a pairs systems Briere should be with Gagne and Carter with Hartnell and Giroux with JVR. The problem is Powe is not a top 6 guy and neither is Asham the addition of one more winger is needed to have 3 really solid lines. I like Asham were he is but it is Powe’s lack of hands that is causing problems. I would like to see another call up brought up here to try to get in over Powe who doesn’t have the skill to play with star players.

Gagne-Richards-Danny
Hartnell-Carter-upgrade
JVR-Giroux-Asham

Carter-Briere-Gagne
JVR-Giroux-Hartnell
Powe-Richards-Asham

I’d like to see Hartnell with the Giroux and JVR to give the line some Grit and free them up. The Carter-Briere and Gange line gives two good passers to feed Carter the puck. The Richards line is a grinder line wiht some scoring talent. An obvious drop off from the top two lines

I thought Briere and Giroux played really well together in limited time last year. Maybe we should give that another try.

Gange-Richie-Carter (how sick would that line be?)
Harts- Briere- Giroux

i may have missed it in this post but what about gagne and carter with hartnell? i dont remember seeing those 2 on a line, both can shoot from anywhere, are underrated along the boards and hartnell compliments them by crashing net. briere is too much of a defensive liability (he is so lazy in the defensive zone) to play with anyone other than richards and powe on wing – a small but quick line.

by bpmc21 on Feb 3, 2010 7:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Snipers: Carter, Gagne, JVR (He’s a mix of all three, but he’s here because of the 2-3-3)
Playmakers: Richards, Giroux, Briere
Physical presence: Hartnell, Asham, Powe

Split ’em up and you have three lines:
Carter-Briere-Powe
Richards-Hartnell-Gagne
JVR-Giroux-Asham

The Flyers have it right. Each line has two legitimate scoring threats, two legitimately good defenders, and solid chemistry. Why change anything?

Let’s go back to the best line on the Flyers last season:

Hartnell – Carter – Lupul

Why did this line work so well? Because you had 2 guys who were strong wingers, good passers and who alternated at stretching the defense. Because they were both dangerous scoring threats, this opened up a lot of ice for Carter, and lead to his huge season.

Who would I try there?

Claude Giroux. Asham, hell I’d even try Laperriere or JVR moved across. I would try combinations of players until things started clicking, because what the team needs to do right now is score goals.

2nd Line dilemma:
Basically you have 2 Dillemas:

1. Danny Briere needs to be catered to, and the Flyers have pingponged him around and stuck him in situations where his unique talent is squandered.

2. Simon Gagne, who is one of my favorite all time players, is either injured, in significant decline, in a funk or some combination of all 3.

3. Mike Richards is an opportunistic player, who nearly won the Selky last year (and probably should have) but this year is being expected to score a lot of goals, which just isn’t in his makeup.

What I’d do:

Make this a defensive/checking line:

Asham Richards Gagne

Match this line up against the Top O line of the other team, and tell them job 1 is to end the game with no GA’s. Tell Asham to punish the opposing team’s players, and in general clog the neutral zone and make the other team’s life a living hell. Relieve Mike Richards of the pressure of the expectation that he put the other team on his back, and instead have them counter punch, thinking defense first. Taking some of the pressure off Gagne might be just what’s needed for him to play through his issues and get some of the sharpness back. Since he’s an excellent defensive player, he fits well into a cancellation line.

So you’re left with:

3rd line:
Powe – Briere – Carcillo

4th line:
Lappy – Betts – JVR

Try different combinations of these moving powe/lappy and Carcillo/JVR back and forth until you find things that click.

Now before anyone says it, I know that these combinations and changes will not happen, because of the Flyers’ sacred cows, and management prejudices.

And just for the record, Claude Giroux is the best offensive player on the flyers, and one way or another he should be on the top 2 lines.

4th line — Leave it alone, it works very well.

True

Unfortunately, I had that at the bottom of a long post, after i changed my mind. It would be great if you could edit your comments at least for a period after posting, but you can’t.

With that said, the problem with the chico and the men line is that, it does its job and generates havoc, but that doesn’t directly lead to points. If the other lines were firing, I’d be all for keeping them together as they have great chemistry.

Unfortunately, having them go out and stir things up doesn’t help when the other lines aren’t capitalizing on the momentum.
