Game 58, Preview and Game Thread: Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils
Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils, Feb 10, 2010 7:00 PM EST
#8 Philadelphia Flyers (29-25-3, 61 pts) at #2 New Jersey Devils (36-20-2, 74 pts)
Prudential Center - 7:00 PM ET - Newark, NJ
TV: CSN Philly HD, MSG Plus HD
Radio: 610 WIP, XM 204
This is the open game thread.
Get New Jersey reaction at In Lou We Trust

While there might only be about nine fans at the game tonight in Newark thanks to the snow, the Philadelphia Flyers are successfully in the building and the game tonight will go on. Michael Leighton will be in net yet again for the Flyers and Ville Leino will not play. Again.
Over at SBN's In Lou We Trust, they're still a little miffed about Jeff Carter's hit on Anssi Salmela the other night. Here's Steve Lepore of ILWT, directing Devils fans to our coverage of the game tonight.
... once again the guys at Broad Street Hockey should have some far-fetched defense for why Jeff Carter didn't even get a fine for that hit when even Colin White got a fine for that hit on Long Island good Flyer-centric material leading up to the game.
We won't touch that, but it's at least worth mentioning. Must be some pro-Flyers bias in those league offices, am I right?
On to the game, the Flyers will need to be better than they were on Monday night against these same Devils. They've been playing mediocre hockey for the better part of the last month or so up in New Jersey, but coach Jacques Lemaire had a nice, long chat with his team yesterday and they focused on what their major problems have been.
Ilya Kovalchuk has yet to score for the Devils, despite nine shots on Tuesday night. Most of them came courtesy of a whopping 11-plus minutes of power play time. It appears that they're kind of forcing the issue and trying to get Kovalchuk the puck simply too often, which you'd think means that it'lll be easier for the Flyers to defend on the penalty kill.
Regardless, though, the Flyers cannot afford to take penalties at will again tonight because it's only a matter of time before Kovalchuk pots a few of those. The Flyers also have to get solid goaltending from Leighton again tonight and the offense will have to, you know, not disappear again. Basic stuff, really. We all know what this team has to do. It's just a matter of them doing it.
After the jump, expected line combinations, starting goaltenders, questions to answer and our in-game discussion.
Flyers Line Combinations
Gagne - Richards - Carcillo
Hartnell - Carter - Briere
JVR - Giroux - Asham
Powe - Betts - Laperriere
Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Krajicek
Bartulis - Coburn
New Jersey Line Combinations
Parise - Zajac - Langenbrunner
Kovalchuk - Zubrus - Elias
Pandolfo - Niedermayer - Rolston
Peters - McAmmond - Leblond
Salvador - Greene
Mottau - White
Davison- Fraser
Starting Goaltenders
Questions To Answer
- Can the Flyers stay out of the penalty box?
- Will the Flyers avoid falling to an early deficit tonight?
- Can they stop Kovalchuk... again?
- Any revenge for Jeff Carter's hit on Anssi Salmela?
- Sticking with Carter, how's he play after being notified that he'll have to head to Vancouver in case Ryan Getzlaf can't take part in the Olympics?
- How many people are in the building tonight in the midst of this blizzard?
Tonight's game is back with JJ on CSN Philly and on the radio at 610 WIP. As always, join us here for the conversation and LET'S GO FLYERS!

Ask those Devils fans why Scott Stevens was never suspended or fined for his hit on Lindros (and similar hits like it throughout the years).
Same hit, same unfortunate result. A bit late, but acceptable within the rules. Don’t like the rules, change them.

Actually, don’t do that. I did the other day, and they were none too happy. They jumped all over me. But interestingly enough, some weren’t claiming the league office was pro-Flyers, but rather anti-Devils.
Why? It’s a totally valid comparison. We’re told to shut up when we whine about our players being bullied on the ice because “zOMG, Flyers are biggest goons ever!” but this is also an example of the proverbial elbow pot calling the kettle black.

Well, check the thread out. At first I was only making a joke about the Lindros hit, not really drawing a direct comparison, but one of their subscribers jumped all over me, accusing me of trolling and bringing up a decade old issue. But my main point was that everyone seems to scream for blood after every hard hit anymore, regardless of whether it was dirty or not.
I know, and the bottom line is, no matter how many rule changes they make, there will also be something that isn’t safe. It’s a dangerous sport and not for the weak. For shit’s sake, they skate on one pair of weapons while brandishing another. This ain’t the ice capades.

I’m getting a little stir crazy in dc. We have 3 ft of snow on the ground and haven’t been to work all week. My gf and I have seen pretty much every movie netflix streams now (check out “beer wars”) as well as gotten tired being naked in bed together. I didn’t believe that last part could happen. Thank god this game is on to give us something new.

Yeah, only 16 new inches in the Lehigh Valley, but enough to keep me home. I’ve been waiting all day for the game. I hope my wait is rewarded.

Keep it retarded, Jersey.
Its probably because, as completely objective people like Bob McKenzie said: “I do not view it as a head shot per se. It wasn’t late. It started as shoulder on shoulder and force rode up into Salmela’s head.”

weird enough, but the consensus in the comments is that the hit was clean and within the rules. this was by flyers haters and lovers alike. i really didn’t expect that.

Now if Puck Daddy commenters don’t feel like that a Flyer should have been suspended for a questionable hit, then you know your argument for a suspension is complete BS.
What a shame that it’s Lepore saying that as well. His hockey media website is fairly decent.

I remember a snow storm in the past when the Flyers/Rangers played that night. IIRC, Tom Poti had hooked Handzus and got a penalty shot in overtime.
I think it was Lindros’ second game back, maybe?
Since it came up earlier, I just checked their site for the heck of it….
The Devils are offering ticket holders for tonights game 50% off the ticket price of a future game, whether or not they go tonight. But it seems that if they dont go, they only get the discount if they buy tickets for those other games, no straight exchange.

If the puck crosses the line in the Devil’s Arena and no one is around to see it, is it a goal?

Why don’t they put a little chip in the puck and a sensor on the line that signals the goal light when the puck crosses the line?
It might sound drastic but so was using instant replay in baseball before it started happening.
But where is that censor? In the middle of the puck? Is it a ring? What if it’s on edge?

It would be similar to what they do with invisible fences for dog. The little chip is in the puck, if it crosses the line, the sensors would be built into the posts so that when it crosses that invisible barrier it sends a signal to turn the red light on…it’s completely workable. Whether its needed or not is another story.
There’s a couple of different ways to do it, so it’s totally doable

A puck’s 3 inches in diameter, so 1.5 inches from center to edge. Put an RFID chip in the center of the puck, and the trigger line 1.5 inches back from the goal-line. If the chip hits the line, the puck’s in. It won’t catch the ones that are on edge that only go 1.25 inches in, but I don’t think there are too many of those anyway.
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"
Even if you only use one chip in the center, another options would be to place a grid of sensors under the entire goal area instead of just on the line, then you’d be able to easily triangulate the exact position of the puck.

I was supposed to to go to Montreal this coming weekend (thankfully not happening, since we’re snowed in); talk about a place where you’re surrounded by people who are bilingual… I think it was the first time I realized how absolutely awful my high school language courses were
by DragonGirl0583 on Feb 10, 2010 8:56 PM EST up reply actions
Hah…almost a quarter of Florida doesn’t speak English at home. We’ve got Spanish, French, Creole, German, Italian, Portuguese, Tagalog, Chinese, Arabic, Greek, Vietnamese, Russian, Polish, Yiddish, Korean, and Hebrew. It’s not like Quebec, where French is the primary language, but there are parts of downtown Orlando where you’ll pretty much only hear Vietnamese on the streets, and some districts where the billboards are all in Spanish.
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"
I completely believe you about Florida. I’m from the farm country part of south jersey, the percentage of people in my area who are migrant workers is enormous, so you have the parents who don’t speak any English at all, and the kids who become bilingual.
But the thing that originally got me in Montreal is how fast they can switch! Your waitress is going along in rapid fire French, and then you politely ask them to switch, and suddenly they’re speaking perfect English with no French accent at all, sometimes changing in midsentence. Many of the people I grew up with that are bilingual have trouble with one of the two languages, usually whichever one they learn second. I think that it’s because in a lot of the schools there (I know it’s not all of them) you actually learn both languages all the way through, instead of the people I grew up with where you speak one at home and one in school. There are definitely sections of South Jersey where Spanish is the dominant language because you have an enclave of immigrants from Puerto Rico and Mexico.
by DragonGirl0583 on Feb 11, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions
A lot of it’s age. We (meaning the US) don’t usually teach a foreign language until high school, by which point the language centers of the brain are fairly well set in their ways. It’s far easier to learn a foreign language and learn it without a significant accent if you start in elementary school.

I’m not a fan of NASCAR but we have a Sprint Car track where I live and going there and watching the race is completely different than watching a race on TV. It’s a huge rush.
I’ve been to the Pocono 500 Raceway. They are better in person, true, but still not my cup of tea.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
Truth be told
Pocono is an insanely boring racetrack to see a race at. I’ve been a NASCAR fan for years, and like Geoff, I was much more interested years ago than I am now. I can see both sides of the aisle here – yes, it has it’s exciting moments, but there’s a huge lull in the middle.
I think one of the sad things is how fans dismiss the sport as “too simple” – which really can be said of any sport. It’s a matter of being interested and getting to know the finer details of the sport (NASCAR included) where you find a lot more going on than what’s on the surface. After all, hockey is more than just 5 guys trying to beat each other up and put a small puck in a net.
(Note: It doesn’t take much for me to be a fan of a sport. I enjoy watching everything from the major four, to NASCAR, to futbol and golf, to gymnastics and other Olympic sports. I’m just an addict like that.)

I used to watch it, but ever since Earnhardt died, it has become such a commercialized “sport” that is nothing like it used to be. I used to be interested. Now, I’m not at all. Give me Rusty, Earnhardt, Labonte, and Jarrett over Johnson, Gordon, Stewart, Hamlin, etc. any day.

It’s called good parenting, in my book anyway. A few years ago, we all went down to CBP. There stood a family of four: mom, day, 2 boys. Mom, dad, one boy in Phillies gear head to toe. Other boy: Met’s gear. I pointed to the kid and told Lucas: “He’s the bad apple in the family and likely always in trouble. Don’t be that kid.”

I generally find we’re a relatively honest fanbase most of the time… If our guy does something really stupid, we’ll usually say call them out ourselves. When we boo our own players, most of the time it’s a) letting them know we care b) trying to get through to them. I mean we have all the problem people that other fanbases have, but I feel like even our announcers usually have no problem going “Now why the heck did he do that, that was dumb” about our own players

I wouldn’t mind it one bit. State politicians have no interest in us except for Atlantic City.

I was stalking there and reading some comments over there during the game and one thing that struck me was how one commenter blasted us for thinking that the Hartnell no goal was indeed a goal when half of their blog thought it might have been in. It’s just funny how some of them despise us so much that they would never be willing to give the Flyers credit for anything.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
But if they move to Pennsylvania, then what do they do? We have two teams. Do they have to root for both?
But the Flyers don’t call themselves Pennsylvania’s team nor are we particularly upset that another team has a fanbase in our state. At least I’m not. And that’s the Devils big thing. They are jealous and upset that the Rangers and the Flyers have a presence in “their state”.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
Except that half of their state roots for the Rangers, so it’s hardly “Devils are New Jersey.” South Jersey also has quite a few Flyers fans because S Jersey was/is primarily Philly sports. So that post is not only bitter, it’s bullshit.

We’re in the Philadelphia market. All the way down to Cape May, all Philadelphia media. No Devils coverage at all. It would be a chore to root for them, if you’re just arguing logistics.

I just saw the post you left for that guy. I also noticed he’s a New England Patriots fan. Where do you have to live to qualify for that?
It has nothing to do with where you live I guess, that just grants him annoying frontrunning status….

It’s called “not having the stones to root for the Giants or Eagles,” so he roots for the team that won 3 championships in a single decade. Takes guts going out on a limb like that. Just wait until the Pats go back into the tank for 30 more years. Oh, well, he’ll aways have the aughts to look back on fondly in the old age home.

I don’t know if you saw it yet or not, Travis, but that guy that you replied to and the blog editor replied to your comment over there. They both wrote novels so I won’t quote them, but apparently they think the Flyers don’t reach out to New Jersey and the Devils do……

I’m not sure whether a standing O or a high five is appropriate here, but well said on the second reply! The idea of a Devil entering Cumberland, Salem, or Cape May counties is downright laughable. They might pretend they go to Atlantic City or Camden, but I’d be surprised if they know how to find the other counties on the map.

I think they were a bit generous with Pirates, too. Phillies has really crept west with the sucktacular consistency of the Pirates for the last 17 years.

So true...
Here in Harrisburg everyone is a Phillies, Pens, and Steelers fans…as a fan of all of the Philly teams it makes me sick to see this type of front running behavior.
It’s still weird to me that being a Phillies fan can even remotely be called front-running.

Agreed…and normally I wouldn’t throw it out there but when you root for the Pens and Steelers but instead of the Pirates you root for the Phillies then a front runner is exactly what you are.
I totally agree, yes.

True, but…I will say this: I grew up in central PA and it was pretty common to be Phillies, Steelers and Flyers fan there. Back then it was more Flyers because the Bears were Flyers farm team. Now they are the Caps, so I imagine there’s also a fair amount of Caps fans living amongst the Pens base.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
No one likes the Pirates. I’m a student at a college an 45 minutes west of WB-S and there are a bunch of Philly fans, New York fans, Steeler fans, and Penguin fans, but one thing I have never seen is a Pittsburgh Pirate fans.
And having to deal with front-runner, bandwagon Phillie fans is something I never thought would happen as much as 3 years ago.

Minor correction: No one likes the Pirates team, lots of people go to the games just to see their stadium…..

That’s one thing that I probably need to do in my life. Go to PNC Park to see a Phillies-Pirates game.

I might do that this year, money providing, but most likely not. Im also going to see the Phills play Fla in Fla, then the next day see Tampa play CWS in Tampa.

Tropicana is the opposite of CBP and PNC. I’ve been there prob 5 times because I have family in the area. Not so nice.

Although it is absolutely hilarious that the roof of the Trop looks like a citrus juicer, by pure coincidence
by DragonGirl0583 on Feb 10, 2010 11:12 PM EST up reply actions
I thought so, but not like it smells like trash or anything. I think it was just sort of stagnant, I guess that’s the right word. You have this really humid air, but because it’s not a retractable roof it’s not exactly easy to get fresh air in, and you get that situation when it just smells off. That was my experience, anyway.

I guess I should clarify that a bit. The biggest fan groups that I see up here by exact team are in no particular order: Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, Yankees, Steelers, Penguins, Giants, Jets.
I don’t see a lot of Mets, Rangers, Islanders, or even Devils. And like I said before, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one Pirate hat.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
I only mentioned because people seriously do love PNC Park, kinda scary actually. My best friend is a native* of Pittsburgh, and Pirates are very low on their priority list…. Last I checked, the pecking order was still:
1) Steelers
2) Beer
3) God
4) Penguins
5) Everything Else
6) Pirates
(Note: the top 3 are completely interchangeable)
by DragonGirl0583 on Feb 10, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions
historically the Pirates are a much more storied franchise than the Phillies…. during the Philadelphia’s golden age of baseball when the A’s regined from 1901-1930 to go to a phillies game was considered slumming it ….that’s how bad they were. The Phillies have been as bad as the Pirates are now alot more throughout their history than the Pirates.
That’s definitely true. They have 3 more World Series titles than the Phillies do, but nowadays, it’s like a minor miracle to see anybody sporting a Pittsburgh Pirate hat.

I agree with most of that….the section of Jersey listed as the mets needs to be like, striped with Yankees colors and mets colors, I think calling Montreal as Jays territory might be disputable since they’re quite bitter about the whole thing in general, but yeah, mostly agree

Oh man, this reminds me so much of a friend I had in college. He was a huge one-upper and it got to the point where whenever something like this happened, 8 of us would just take it to the next level: “I found the map. I made the map. I invented maps. I was the artist for Lewis and Clark. I was Lewis…and Clark.” and on, and on, and on until it eventually got to “I am God, inventor of everything.”

Offtopic, but when did the NHL decide to be honest with attendance all of a sudden? Official attendance for the Devils game 5580, and for the Rangers-Preds game 13,128. Meanwhile the game in December against the Rangers at the Wachovia Center was reported as a sellout at 19,637?
… maybe they only sold 5,580? lol

Also, the Flyers apparently only had one shot in the third period? JJ wasn’t kidding when he said the statisticians at the Rock are picky with shots.
Yeah, we had more shots in overtime. Also, did it look to anyone else that Gagne’s shot may have changed direction? It looked to me as if it hit Carter.
I thought the same thing

Yeah, I thought it glanced off of his body. Nice to see Gagne get credit though, he needs all the confidence boost he can get. Even though it’s a nice “up yours” if Carter gets two after all the commotion about the hit.
