Friday Morning Fly By: Canadiens Game Day, More Emery News, and Betts Extension

Today's open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Last night's NHL scores... OTT 6 - WAS 5; CAR 4 - BUF 3 (OT); BOS 5 - TB 4; SJ 3 - DET 2 (SO); VAN 3 - FLA 0; DAL 3 - CAL 1; EDM 3 - LA 2 (SO)
  • Reminder, tonight's Canadiens game is at 6:00 pm. [Philly.com] [DelCoTimes]
  • The Flyers are still tied for 7th in the East.
  • The big story is still Ray Emery's injury. [Inquirer] [Daily News] [DelCoTimes] [The700Level] [DelcoTimes]
  • A quote that should make you scratch your head: "The idea is to take these three weeks to strengthen the area and the muscles around that area. We are hoping this will be the right way to go." [CSNPhilly]
  • The Flyers have signed Blair Betts to a two-year contract extension at $700,000 per year. [BSH] [FanShot] [philabright] [CSNPhilly]
  • In case you missed it, the Flyers put their new pre-game video online. Here it is with reaction: [The700Level]
  • A story about shift times: "Bottom line: as Tyler said, nothing good is going to happen once you've been on the ice for a minute." [Behind The Net]
  • The round-robin game between the U.S. and Canada is on MSNBC, not NBC.  "From a demographic, sponsorship and ratings perspective, NBC has every reason not to put the game on its broadcast network. But in the context of other culture clashes with hockey fans, NBC's decision damages its relationship with that audience." [Puck Daddy]
  • Oh, because I can and I'm proud of this, the notion that James van Riemsdyk is "clearly the 12th of 12 forwards" and "doesn't contribute anything at this point" is refuted at least by the fact that he's outperforming Scott Hartnell, on the year, in the last 10 games, in the last 15 games, and in the last 27 games.
  • Lastly, a pretty sweet Phanatic snowman. [The700Level]

What relationship, exactly, is NBC damaging?

The female demo, apparently.

I took it as just hockey fans in general. The reason they bumped the U.S./Canada game was because the female demo wouldn’t watch it.

I think the best argument was that NBC likes to be flexible in it’s prime time programming. If some dude is about to break a world luge record, they can break away from the ice capades to show that. But breaking away from US/Canada? We’d all have a fit.

I just noticed the large ad for sexual lubrication. I’m wondering what you guys are trying to tell me about the rest of the Flyers season.

I saw that too… maybe Hartnell’s been putting KY on his blade instead of wax.

Or in his hair.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

Maybe we need to lube up the Flyers and squeeze our way deeeeeeeeep into the playoffs. Get it!?

If you guys are annoyed by the ad at all, just switch to the ‘wide’ setting up on the top of the right sidebar and you won’t even see it. At least not that wrap around part.

I, for one, welcome our new personal lubricant overlords.

KY should put Carcillo’s face on the cover on their Intense packaging

Philadelphia would be buying in the boatloads, just for sheer comedy

The Flyers are using the Booth hit as an advertisement on how they play. Interesting concept. I’m not sure many other teams would do the same.

I have no problem with this. People around the league will call it barbaric and stupid. I don’t care.

They’re using the Gaborik fight too, so there’s more than one “potential controversy” in there.

The fans won’t care, though.
