By virtue of their win tonight, the Americans have guaranteed that one of either the Russians or Canadians will not medal at these Olympics.
Canada is now the sixth seed. They will play Germany on Tuesday and, should they win, play Russia on Wednesday. Both are elimination games.

No. Russia has 4 Major enemies. Canada has enemy number one, but also Richie and Prongs. Ilya K, Malkin, Ovi, and Gonchar! BOOOO

Wait….If Finland Sweden goes to OT, then isn’t there a chance that Russia is the #4 seed?

I don’t think so. They have greater goal differential, so they’ll be third regardless.

Oh, you’re right.
Their goal differential is 9. If Sweden loses in OT, their goal differential will be 3 and if Finland loses in OT, their goal differential will be 8. Sorry, my head is spinning looking at a chart trying to analyze and none of it is making sense to me.

Yeah, it’s annoying.

Depending on how goal differential turns out, Latvia is playing either Czech Republic, Sweden, or Finland.

Either way
Latvia is winning the game 10-0.
HAHA, Bettman doesn’t get his Crosby/Ovechkin gold medal game after all. You can bet no Olympics in 2014. Bettman just doesn’t have the control over the outcomes enough to make it worth his while. Not that I truly believe that but I just like how it didn’t work out in Bettman’s or Crosby’s or Ovechkin’s best interests. USA USA!!
Well it still might work out in Crosby or Ovechkin’s best interests depending on how everything shakes down. And if Canada win’s their next game then we can see an Ovechkin and Crosby match up. Which will be great when Russia beats them.
Though personally, the thought of Canada not even qualifying for the medal round is rather appealing and makes me down right giddy.
let’s all pray that oveckin gives him the jagr treatment

Bettman probably wants a USA gold more than anything..

Maybe, but I think he wanted a Russian/Canada gold medal game more than anything. That would be promo material for the rest of the year. Now at least one of them is going home empty handed. But I am happy so go USA!
Growing the game in the USA is the most important thing to him, as his track record shows.

Making the game more palatable to the unintersted mainstream public for profits is bettmen’s goal. What he has done is dumb down the sport, make it a sideshow and expanded it into markets that have no interest in supporting it. He has failed in my opinion.

I gotta say I actually agreed with Bettman in his interview last night. (I never thought I’d agree with anything that particular SHMUCK ever said….but..) It really doesn’t make sense to the league to stop mid-season unless there is something to be gained by letting the players play in the Olympics…. and that only makes sense if the Olympics are in this hemisphere and can be viewed in primetime.
Figure the next Olympics aren’t going to see NHL participation in Russia. There’s no exposure at 4 am start times for the US/CANADA viewing audience. The NHL is better off having the season uninterrupted.
crosby/richards
will they be on the same line next game?
i just don’t see it.

not one highlight from last night’s game made the cut for espn’s “top ten” this morning. you would think that one wouldn’t really be surprised, but here i am all infuriated that kessler’s hustle didn’t get the notariety it deserved.
instead, some mascot got the #1 spot.

ESPN Doesn't Count.
They’re not the Worldwide Leader in Sports.
They’re the Worldwide Leader in “Who’s More Now.”
Hockey is not as “now” as mascots, apparently. Also the NBA is more relevant than the NHL, and the Yankees and Red Sox are more relevant than just about everything. That’s how they see it.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I could be wrong on this, but a buddy of mine that I watched the game with last night said that ESPN isnt allowed to show olympic highlights because NBC has the rights or something.
