Tuesday Morning Fly By: Men's Hockey Gets Back Underway... Elimination Time!

Richie's chances at turning that WJC gold into Olympic gold are a lot tougher than those of his American counterparts.

Richie's chances at turning that WJC gold into Olympic gold are a lot tougher than those of his American counterparts.

Today's open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • The Olympic men were off yesterday, but USA's ladies crushed Sweden 9-1 in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal game. They'll play Canada or Finland. [SBN]
  • The bracket on the men's side is now in focus, and Dirk at On the Forecheck has a clear look here. [OtF]
  • The top-seeded USA will play the winner of today's #8 Switzerland vs #9 Belarus match on Wednesday. Should they win that, they'll play either #4 Finland, #5 Czech Republic, or #12 Latvia in the semifinals on Friday.
  • Meanwhile, Richards, Pronger and the Canadians have a much tougher road to the final. If they get by Germany today, they'll play Russia in the quarterfinals tomorrow and likely Sweden or Slovakia (maybe Norway, probably not) in the semi's... if they can get there.
  • Here's a terribly hilarious read on five reasons Canada will still win gold, including 'Sidney Crosby' and 'Isn't Canada supposed to win?' [The Telegram]
  • We had a story yesterday about the Wells Fargo Center. In case you're wondering where it went and for full disclosure purposes, we were asked to take it down.
  • In other hockey news, the Olympic break is really putting a cramp on our style.
  • TV schedule today: 3 PM, Switzerland vs Belarus on USA. 8 PM: Canada vs Germany on CNBC. 10 PM: Czech Republic vs Latvia on CNBC. Open thread later. 12:30 AM: Slovakia vs Norway on CNBC.

luongo back in net for the canadians. no shocker there.

also, who would you rather have the US play, SWI or BEL? Im leaning toward Belarus-those seemingly neutral swiss are brutal.

also, i am rooting for canada to squeek one out today. i want to see a tired canada vs. russia with massive casualties on both sides.

Remember that we still have 1/4 of the season to play after the Olympic break. As long as Richards and Pronger are not among the casualties I’m all for it.

US women will play Canada (Suprise!) after a 5-0 win over Finland. I’d much rather have Belarus then Switzerland. Swiss goalies have been known to be spoilers in the past.

When I drove past the center the other night, I noticed a large F and a large O beneath the Wachovia logo. Change is upon us!

Come on JR, you know you wanna hit Milbury

Something I was thinking about

How great would it be for the US to sweep the Hockey Gold medals for both the Mens and Womens divisions?

by thwalls on Feb 23, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions

It would be hilarious if both were US gold, Canada silver

NHL Network

For anyone interested, I think the NHL Network is reairing USA vs. Canada today at 2pm.

Anyone catch JR arguing over who the most exciting player in hockey is? I forget who he was speaking to, but JR said Ovechkin and the other announcers were stunned. And then immediately tried to tout Crosby. I thought it was hysterical.

I thought it was odd the US was an underdog to Canada after they routed the Swiss team and Canada was taken to a SO.

I heard the little tete a tete he had with Millbury, whereupon Millbury said Crosby is not easily rattled and JR asked him if he’d actually ever watched Crosby play in the NHL. That was funny.

Not to be a broken record, but I’ll say this one more time.

At the end of the day, Crosby is a helluva player, no question. But he is easily rattled. Maybe our chants of “Crosby sucks” don’t work on him, but other situations do (playing in the Stanley Cup Finals, for example).

The Penguins won the Cup largely due to Malkin, Fleury, and Scuderi. Obviously Crosby and others contributed along the way, because it’s a team game after all. But if you remove any one of those first three players from the equation you have a different story.

Por ejemplo:

1. Who led the big fat Game 6 comeback against the Flyers? Malkin.
2. Who ensured that the Pens were up 3-1 going into Game 5 of that series? Fleury.
3. Who kept the Penguins loose during the 2009 Finals? Malkin.
4. Who saved more goals than anyone except Fleury? Scuderi.

Etc., etc., etc.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Feb 23, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

5. Who should have been suspended for game 3 of the finals? Malkin.

Crosby was invisible that entire Final, and missed what, the last 10 minutes of the game, when he tried to ride Kronwall.

Oh, This is bound to be good
You can't, but you thought that You could

But what really matters…

5. Who was the first person to lift the Cup, becoming the youngest captain ever to do so? I’m dry reaching just thinking about it.

Okay, so this is slightly off topic but I just realized that the Flyers resume their season on March 2 @ Tampa Bay and the NHL Trade Deadline is March 3. The Olympics do not officially end until February 28th and the Men’s Hockey Gold Medal game is also on the 28th. My question is: when does the NHL Trade Freeze end?
Obviously, with the end of the Olympics being so close to the Trade Deadline, I am sure that GM’s are calling and hashing out deals, maybe even having some trades done and merely waiting for the freeze to end to make them official. Why are we not hearing anything about them? There is no way GMs are waiting for the freeze to end to start talking about trades with just over a week until the Trade Deadline. Anybody hearing anything?

by flyrsfrk05 on Feb 23, 2010 1:43 PM EST reply actions

It ends on the 28th at 11:59 PM. Teams have 63 hours, one minute after the trade freeze to get stuff done.

I’m not 100 percent on this, but I don’t think GM’s are allowed to negotiate during the freeze. I could be way off, but I’m not sure. Maybe someone else can correct me.

I would think they could do “off the record” deals and general inquiring but nothing set in stone until the freeze is over, which is why we’ll probably see a bunch of trades the first day after the freeze because GMs have been making calls this whole time. It would be ridiculous to think not one GM has picked up the phone to inquire about player x and see what such & such team wants for him. But I could be wrong. I just hope Homer doesn’t do anything bonehead like give away more picks for some has been who won a cup 10 years ago.

by Kanayd on Feb 23, 2010 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t worry. That won’t happen. Sadly, we have NO draft picks to give away anymore!

1. The idiot that said Canada will win because of its sixth man? Last time I counted, unless Crosbaby gets called for diving, they already have six guys on the rink.

2. Didn’t know Cartsie was the alternate captain of the juniors team that won.

3. Is that Danny Syvret in the right hand side of that picture???

by orangeandblack20 on Feb 24, 2010 5:24 AM EST reply actions

Just looked it up, yes it was Syvret. Carter, Richie, Syvret, and Coburn were all members of that team. As was Crosby. Carter made the All-Tournament team.
