Snowed In Open Thread: Friday Night Hockey
So with all the snow that's supposed to hammer us tonight, I'm not going anywhere. I am settling in to watch some hockey on this Friday night though, in particular the Devils and Leafs in Kovalchuk's debut. Other games tonight: ATL at WSH, CAR at BUF, CGY at FLA, and PHX at CHI. That last game should be a really good one as well. Who else is just sitting around tonight?

Who is the marketing genius at the NHL network that decided to air some crappy college hockey game instead of simulcasting Kovalchuk and the Devils vs. the torrid, remade Maple Leafs?
Who’s playing the college game?

Oh, Clarkson and Union. That’s actually going to be a pretty good game (although Quinnipiac/Cornell is the better game in the ECAC tonight… but I’m biased)

Its terrible production of a bad product. I wouldn’t watch the best two high school basketball teams in the country for the same reason I don’t care about two good college hockey teams.
Opinions of college hockey aside (and I don’t feel it’s a bad product, generally speaking), you can understand why they’re trying to promote the college game, right?

Its the NHL network, not the Hockey Network. I think its wrong. If they wanted to promote something, show AHL games. In that game they’re airing now, will three players from the teams combined ever play in the NHL?
I’m not sure on the numbers, but there are probably a good number who have been drafted by NHL teams. It’s not on the level of Canadian juniors of course, but that’s in large part because most American players just don’t think college is a feasible route to get themselves to the pro ranks.

I said “play” not drafted.
I know a handful will be drafted but they’ll mainly be career AHL/IHL/ECHL guys.
Oh, yeah. I agree. But again, it’s because college hockey just has never been looked at as a place where players can get to the NHL. It’s going to need a boost in exposure to get there though.

I’m not 100% sold that everyone in the NHL wants college hockey to be looked at that way. I’m sure some might, but I don’t know about everyone.
I take this passage with a grain of salt, because it’s one person’s experience/opinion taken out of a book, and the story is from 20 years ago. But it might as well be added to the discussion, because some organizations may still treat college hockey the same way now as they did then. Anyway, not necessarily my personal opinion, just an example for discussion:
So, the Capitals plead with me just to meet with some colleges and I finally agree. Michigan State, Miami of Ohio, and Western Michigan are the schools the Capitals first contact. NHL teams like for colleges to keep this process hush-hush so other NHL teams don’t get wind of an obscure prospect. If one of the schools offers a full scholarship, then the team will more than likely draft the player at the following draft, unless they are completely overmatched. College hockey is free development for NHL teams, and the colleges gain access to players they perhaps wouldn’t find through normal recruiting procedures.
…
The Capitals go around and sell me to colleges who have a spot or two open on their roster. The colleges look to NHL teams like Washington to to provide an overlooked Junior B player that can help them without affecting the school’s recruiting budget. It is a good deal for everybody. The school, the NHL team, and for the player, in this case, me.
That’s from Chapter 2 of Jonesy, Put Your Head Down and Skate.

Watching the Phantoms/Monarchs game. Real high camera angle and you can barely see the markings on the ice. I wish the Hershey Bears were playing.
Also have on Caps/Thrashers on Comcast Network. Probably going to wait until On the Fly is on to catch the other highlights.
On AHL Live? The production value on those broadcasts always look like high school media classes are working the game.

For those on this thread, I just posted this on the Nick Boynton story:
From Gramps article:
Holmgren said Flyers have about $900,000 cap room as they search for a scoring upgrade at forward.
My question is: WHAT? Then he should DEFINITELY be able to add $150,000 in salary for the Boynton/OKT swap.
I think this takes mikefive’s number two out of the equation.

Either way, I have too many ideas already and no motivation to do it. (That and finals are telling me I have more important things to do)

Yeah, I don’t know why they bother labeling teams as “Jersey’s Team” when pretty much the southern half of the state consists of Philly fans.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
I think it’s because some people resent the fact that New Jersey never really gets to have it’s own identity at anything. Listen to the news around here, how often do they refer to the “5 county area” around Philly, and how often do they refer to the “8 county area”? I think they say the 8 county metropolitan area less than 1% of the time. Then the locals down at the shore spend the entire summer complaining about the influx of Bennies and Shoobies (which term is used being localized to the town you’re in and where the day-tripping tourist originates from).

Grew up in Washington Twp(Gloucester County) NJ, The Devils, and the Net’s are North Jersey teams. South Jersey chooses to, rightfully I might add, affiliate itself with Philadelphia sports teams.
At the same time, we don’t really have the choice. South Jersey is an extension of Philadelphia, just as the western suburbs are. We’re in the Philadelphia sphere of influence when it comes to media, all the way down to Cape May.
I don’t have a problem with that, but I was born in Philly so I don’t know if I’m any different.
