Weekend Fly By: Tragedy, Prospect Wins, and Cap Issues

David Laliberte breaks in on goal. via bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com

I know, I know: It's Saturday.  But you're snowed in and I really wanted to share a few of these.  Don't expect weekend Fly Bys to become a trend.

  • Last night's NHL scores... NJ 4 - TOR 3; WAS 5 - ATL 2; CAR 4 - BUF 3; CAL 2 - FLA 1; PHO 2 - CHI 1 (SO)
  • Ho, hum Washington wins again... [Japers' Rink]
  • The Phantoms won 3-1 on goals by Mika Pyorala, Jonathon Kalinski, and an empty net goal by Jonathan MatsumotoJohan Backlund stopped 24 of 25 shots. [PostStar]
  • Sad news as Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke's son dies in a car accident. [Puck Daddy]  Travis put up a link taking you to the SBN NHL Homepage. [FanShot]
  • In other Flyers' prospect news, Joacim Eriksson stopped 33 of 36 shots (plus 6 of 7 in the shootout) to get the win. [EuroFlyers]...
  • ...Jakub Kovar made 26 saves on 27 shots, stopping both shootout attempts to also get a win. [EuroFlyers]...
  • ...And Jacob De Serres won again, recording his first shutout with Brandon as he stopped all 16 shots against him. [Luber's Lounge]
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have been sold! [Raw Charge]
  • Another fan uses a lazer pointer on a goalie.  Remember when this was on national T.V. at the Bank? [ Puck Daddy]
  • Typical fluff piece the day before a game: Who will win the Super Bowl? [Frequent Flyers]
  • Just thought I'd flag a new stat from Tom Awad which weights shots - by location, rebounds, and score - then adjusts for the situation, opponents, and teammates.  Interesting, even if I don't fully grasp it. [Puck Prospectus]
  • The Flyers react to the Kovalchuk trade: [CSNPhilly]
  • Also in that above link comes this gem which I had to share in Friday's Snowed-in Thread:  "Holmgren said Flyers have about $900,000 cap room as they search for a scoring upgrade at forward."
  • The Wild give Anton Khudobin his first NHL start tomorrow. [CSNPhilly]
  • Lastly - my favorite - Anthony SanFilippo says this about the Flyers cap situation: "They find themselves suffering from the perfect storm of roster dilemmas — no cap room (about $1 million), no top tier minor league prospects under contract and no draft picks to trade. ... The Flyers made this bed with questionable contracts, overpayment in trades, and a mismanagement of the salary cap." [DelcoTimes]

Anthony SanFilippo sums the flyers situation up real well… unfortunately.
I just don’t understand how we can consistently be in this spot.

A little about Anton Khudobin -

He is a 5 foot 10 goalie from Russia and rated #16 on Minnesota’s Hockey Future Prospects rankings. Drafted #206 overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 2008 ECHL Goaltender of the Year.

He is currently 10-14 with a .904 save% and 2.42 GAA for the Houston Aeros of the AHL.

This is his first NHL start, but not his first NHL win. He took over for Josh Harding Thursday and beat the Oilers, something his opponents tonight were unable to do a day earlier.

Here’s a good article on him: http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_14344750?source=rss

That said – the Flyers should shove the puck down his throat tonight.

"NO HONOR"

The Flyers have acquired forward Ville Leino from Detroit for defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and a fifth round pick in 2011.

Leino had 5 goals and 4 assists in 13 games with Detroit in 08-09, but has struggled offensively this season with 4 goals and 3 assists in 42 games this season.

plus he costs more on the cap than OKT he number is 800K whereas OKT was 600K not the big splash move I was hoping for at wing

Looks like the Flyers front office does not take the advice of the people on this website.

Well, they did get rid of OKT so… half win?

Double loss.

They only have six healthy dmen now. OKT is still better than (spends five minutes researching who the fuck could be next on the depth chart…) Marc-Andre Bourdon.

(PS: philadelphiaflyers.com still lists Randy Jones as “in the system” so thats good to know!)

If it makes you feel better (I doubt it) most people think there’s another move coming.

For a goalie I guess.

I don’t think I ever get involved in what should be moved on this site and all that, but did you read this? It’s the biggest news of the day.

Yeah, we saw it. Not sure what to say about it though, really. He’s hurt but they keep saying it’s minor.

1) Its obviously not minor, four days later.
2) Ryan Parent was also minor.

Travis got you covered.

I’m not saying your wrong, I just personally don’t know what to say. He’s obviously hurt. They’re saying it’s minor. First it was maintenance, then it was aches, now it’s hip soreness.

I understand. I’m not saying there’s a lot of analysis, but that its major news. They can call it minor, but if it hasn’t healed in 4 days off… he’s 1/5 of the way to being eligible for LTIR already.

Oh shit just realized something. I’ll put it in that travis posting, go read it.
