Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Astros' fans react to Oswalt trade

Ray Emery will sit for the second straight game due to 'tightness in his left hip.' Michael Leighton will start again.

Emery missed the game in Edmonton with 'general soreness' but the he was expected to be fine to play tonight. That's not the case, and it's really not reassuring either when you look at the Flyers' history of handling seemingly mild injuries that suddenly balloon into serious ones.

Yep…let’s resign this guy long term…seems like he can’t get healthy.

Don’t forget the no trade clause!

by Ben Feldman on Feb 6, 2010 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

Might as well give him a new Lambo every year as part of the deal.

by EREX21 on Feb 6, 2010 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t exactly blame Emery. It’s not like it was his decision to start what 10 games in a row regardless of who the competition was right after coming back from injury. Emery is a solid goal tender as his numbers have shown when healthy. Signing him long term is still a smart move. It wouldn’t be Philadelphia if people weren’t constantly questioning the goal tender regardless of sensibility.

False. His numbers show him to be a mediocre goaltender.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

He said when healthy. Of course, the problem with that is we don’t know how long he was playing with an injury before he left the lineup the first time. That’s an unanswerable question, really.

I’m talking over his career.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

If this is as serious at it probably is, the timing is awful. LTIR requires the player to miss 10 games.

Emery can only miss six games before the Olympic break.

Therefore, they can’t even get cap relief.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, that sucks. I mean, let’s hope it isn’t serious but track record doesn’t lend itself to that hope.

I have a good idea how to deal with it, though.

Laviolette should just start Leighton every single game regardless of the schedule. I mean, its not like he, too, could get injured from such a moronic decision.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think you’re onto something here though. We have three goalies. Emery’s out, so start Leighton every game until he gets hurt. By this point, Emery should be healthy again so Leighton can go on LTIR giving us cap space.

If they keep doing this in a rotating fashion, they should be able to save some real cap space.

Mario on feb 3rd you said

bq.Cue Paul Holmgren:
"He’ll miss a few days, it’s a minor problem"
Next Tuesday "He’s fine, he’ll be skating soon."
At the Olympic Break "Ray Emery will undergo surgery this week and will be able to resume hockey activity in 2-4 weeks."

As soon as I read that I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that you hit the nail on the head.

by Prometheus74 on Feb 6, 2010 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

haha, oh man. You can’t really blame Homer for that – Emery played in Calgary – but that is just terrible.

How did Leighton play against Edmonton? 1 goal sounds impressive but was it shaky at all?

by edbro on Feb 6, 2010 2:39 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He wasn’t great, wasn’t terrible. Typical Leighton, really. Made the saves when he needed.

Only down side is he becomes mentally weak towards the end of the games

by Prometheus74 on Feb 6, 2010 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

How can you possibly tell if he became mentally weak towards the end of the game? The one goal that was allowed wasn’t his fault. Richards blew his coverage and should have just tackled the guy and taken a penalty to at least give them the possibility of making it to OT.

by quovadimus02 on Feb 6, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Correct

Imo, Leighton was let down big time by his team mates. I think Richards was caught “sleeping”. I also do not believe it is his fault since his team mates did not even score once in 60 minutes against an inferior team.

by DeanH on Feb 6, 2010 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

If you look at the goals he has let in the majority of them have come within the last 5 minutes of the 3rd perioud

by Prometheus74 on Feb 6, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

This is just great news. Of course, we all knew it was coming. The Flyers have been rather Mets like in their history of treating injured players.

Coupled with a hideous loss to Georgetown—words cannot describe how much I loathe Georgetown—this just makes my day. This and 20 inches of snow to shovel. FML. Hey, the Sixers won 3 in a row! /blech

The Flyers have been rather Mets like in their history of treating injured players.

I vehemently disagree with that assessment. The Flyers don’t acknowledge the severity of injuries, but they’ve never actually mis-treated players who were injured.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

You don’t think they mistreated Primeau or Lindros, rushing them back from concussions? Or Briere last year? I think there’s some element of misdiagnosis and rushing players back who aren’t ready to play.

by doubleh on Feb 6, 2010 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

They absolutely didn’t rush back briere last season. Nor did anyone rush Primeau back, they told him to retire. I don’t think anyone really understood how to treat concussions back in the 90s, to be honest.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

No, they didn’t understand how to treat concussions; you are correct about that. They still don’t to some degree, especially in light of what we are hearing in NFL hearings.

We will just agree to disagree with regard to the Flyers and their treatment of injuries. It’s never an easy job for a club (see: Lidge, Brad with Phillies), especially is a player says he’s ready and wants to play, but I absolutely thought they rushed Briere back last year and it showed in his play and then subsequent loss for even more time.

i can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic, but eric lindros would have died while on a plane from nashville to philly (john worley and art bartolozzi’s preferred course of action) if keith jones hadn’t insisted that lindros be taken to the hospital

Am I the only one who hopes the Flyers bring him back next season?

Carchidi echoing Mario:

On Wednesday, general manager Paul Holmgren strongly denied a report that Emery had an injured groin.

On Friday, he again said Emery was completely healthy.

On Saturday, the Flyers said Emery would miss tonight’s game in Minnesota because of “tightness in his left hip.”

Update from the Flyers:

"This is kind of an ongoing thing here that he…hadn’t been struggling with, but he had some hip issues on the left side," he said. "Fortunately for us, he hasn’t missed any time until now, but it really started to act up on him yesterday in practice. Just as a precaution, we’re going to leave him out tonight."

Emery will see a doctor when the Flyers return to Philadelphia, which will happen either tonight or tomorrow, depending on the weather.

"We’ll see how he is on Monday (against New Jersey), whether he’s able to play. We’re certainly going to get him checked out," said Holmgren.

One option for Emery could be what is called a synvisc injection. Holmgren, who had the procedure done on his own knee recently, said that it would basically "oil the joint," and a number of Flyers players have had it done in the past.

Hey, Peter, you’ve got a goaltender with a nagging injury, did it ever occur to you that maybe he shouldn’t play 8 games in 14 days? No? Awesome you fucking retard.

by MarioD on Feb 6, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

Why to the Flyers goalies always have hip injuries? Was it last year or the year before that saw Biron and Niitty both have surgery to repair their hips in the offseason? That didn’t affect their play too much, but who knows if it’s the same injury.
