Tuesday Morning Fly By: A WIN! With Goals! Plus Carter's Hit and Emery's Hip

Today's open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Last night's NHL scores... Flyers 3 - Devils 2; SJ 3 - TOR 2; COL 5 - STL 2; PHO 6 - EDM 1; ANA 4 - LA 2
  • Recaps of last night's win: [NHL] [BSH] [TSN] [SBNation] [In Lou We Trust] [The700Level] [CSNPhilly] [Inquirer] [DelcoTimes] [DelcoTimes] [Inquirer] [CSNPhilly]
  • The Flyers are tied for 7th place in the East after last night's win.
  • The biggest story from last night's game (besides the Flyers scoring goals or coming back from two goals down) was Jeff Carter's hit on Anssi Salmela.  [BSH] [Puck Daddy] [Daily News] [The700level]
  • The good news is that Salmela was up walking around and didn't go to the hospital. [Sarah Baicker]
  • Bob McKenzie called it a "clean hit on a player in scoring position.  Unfortunate result." [Bob McKenzie] [Bob McKenzie]
  • The other big news was Ray Emery's injury.  He had an MRI on his hip. [CSNPhilly] [DelCoTimes]...
  • ...Does he need surgery Mr. Holmgren? "Is it something where down the road we need to address this surgically? We need to get a feel of where he's at right now.  We all seem to think he's going to be fine for the short term, anyway. We'll have a better idea about the long term after we get the results." Great. [Daily News]...
  • ...But that won't affect contract negotiations.  Wait, what? [CSNFlyer]
  • The Flyers are lobbying to host the NHL Entry Draft and/or the NHL All-Star Game in 2012 or 2013.  Travis is all over this. [BSH] [Flyers]
  • In lobbying the NHL, Comcast-Spectacor sent impersonators to league headquarters.  Who and what? Rocky Balboa and Ben Franklin handed out soft pretzels.  Yes, really. [Daily News]
  • A couple of fluff pieces here:  One is on the Flyers dentist [Daily News] and the other is on the Flyers equipment manager heading to the Olympics. [Daily News]
  • After last night, the Flyers now have an 84.2% chance of making the playoffs. [Tim Panaccio]
  • An interview with Ville Leino. [NHLFlyers]
  • AHL news: Word is that the Albany River Rats move to Charlotte will be announced Wednesday. [Tim McManus]
  • Maybe you missed it, but a Capitals blogger got into a spat with Mike Milbury.  This is ugly for both parties. [Puck Daddy]
  • Are there any big names on the trade market still?  How about Tim Thomas. [From The Rink]
  • The Flyers were in Toronto last night scouting the Leafs.  Speculation can begin. [BSH]
  • Is Marc-Andre Fleury overrated? "With Fleury’s latest loss in the books...his save percentage on the season has dipped to a mediocre .906. That ranks him 23rd among the 30 NHL starters... Even-strength save percentage... tells a similar story, slotting Fleury 24th of the league’s 30 starting goalies." [Hockey or Die]
  • Lastly, this is a pretty funny video:

Carter hit looked much cleaner that the Richards hit I am guessing Salmela got hurt when he hit the ice face not when Carter hit him, not that serious no hospital visit and he won’t miss any games so I doubt there will be any suspension.

Come on Ponikarovsky from Toronto 6ft 4in 230lb winger would a nice addition some size up front and hopefully in front of the net.

Carter won 8 out of 10 Faceoffs and I think we got killed like 30 to 20 overall when did Carter become a beast at the dot ??

Today in Flyers history…

Eric Desjardins, Gilbert Dionne and John Leclair traded to the Flyers for Mark Recchi and a third round pick.

Actually I have Briere and Laperriere coming over to help me. Richards and Carter never answered the phone.

the “payback” hit on Ryan didn’t seem all that bad compared to the hit he threw on Moeller. it still was awesome though.

if Homer signs Emery to an extension that will nearly be the last straw for me.

you callin me a know-nothin? sir, i'll have you know i happen to know very little.

I’ve had a nagging thought in the back of my head lately that if Homer makes any more really bad moves we should consider starting some kind of large-scale organized write in or protest campaign to convince Snider that the fan base is against him staying GM. Obviously there’s buzz on the internet that we’re not happy, but it might be worth a try if it’s actually direct enough to prevent them from ignoring it… If Homer signs Emery to an extension knowing this injury is serious enough for surgery, especially if he gives Emery a raise anyway, or an NTC/NMC, that may just be the breaking point where I’d be willing to try starting such a thing myself. I don’t want a situation where we’re changing GMs all the time, but I don’t think I’ll be able to handle it if we keep digging ourselves deeper because the worse the situation gets it’ll just take even longer for the next GM to clean it up.

Emerys return from an abdomen injury is quickly followed by a hip injury. To me, that says he was pretty clearly rushed back from his original injury.

Normally, I guess I could see the thinking in rushing him back, but Leighton was playing so well, I just dont understand why we had to push him back.

An they made it sound at the time like they would’ve put in Emery even sooner had Leighton not been on that streak. Sounds like the trainers need to adjust their expectations with these kinds of injuries… seems to happen constantly.
