Cooke

The next Boston Pens games is going to get ugly way to go Campbell I still don’t understand this one.

Chiarelli will address the team regarding the lack of response.
"I was disappointed that there wasn’t a reaction. I was,’’ said Chiarelli, who traveled from Florida to Philadelphia yesterday. "But I want to talk to the team about it.’’

Hopefully we don’t have another Bertuzzi incident which was a retaliation for an knee on knee hit against Naslund. This league is retarded especially with that new rule which will now clearly allow’s Steven’s esque headshots. If I was Pronger or any guy over 6ft 4in I would be fully prepared to go for kill shots once the playoffs start, it is really easy to get your forearm into someone’s jaw without leaving your feet when you have the height advantage I will the NHLPA would grow some balls and try to protect its members and not approve that rule because it is going to much more harm than good.

in re: free Boosh…..

is this a measure to get him some playing time, or are you actively campaigning to replace leighton?

in either case, i really don’t want a goalie drama (some argue its already there) heading into the playoffs, for once.

Boosh needs playing time. You wonder why he gets shelled when Leights gets pulled? It’s because all the action he’s seen has been in practice. Very hard to stay sharp under those conditions. Also for Leighton’s sake I don’t want him to get burned out right before the playoffs.

That could be a t-shirt. “Set the Boosh Loose” or “Let Loose le Boosh” (double entendre, sort of as le bouche is mouth in French)

I was gonna post something similar to this. I’d rock a “Free Boosh” T-shirt. Get the man to play some games! Not saying Leighton needs a rest, but it’s good to keep you backup playing once in a while to stay on top of his game.

I can read the future, while lesser men read comic books.

by Sakurafire on Mar 11, 2010 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’d totally rock that. My mom would even want one b/c Boosh is, in her words, “a cutie.”

Have to be careful about the wording though, we wouldn’t want it to read like we want to get RID of Boosh!

Maybe something like “Unloose the Boosh”?

yeah, but here’s the rub-you wear a shirt with that slogan people will think you are campaigning for the replacement of leighton, when all you want is for leighton to get a breather and for bouch to get some PT.

I would suggest changing slogans. otherwise it might seem that the faithfull are leighton hatin’ (see what i did there)

So tired of the Cooke-Richards comparisons. Cooke has a history; it’s as simple as that—if Campbell was worried about “precedent”. Plus, Cooke had all day to target Savard’s head, whereas the Richards hit was sudden and quick. Also, Richie was penalized for the hit; Cooke got nothing because the officials weren’t paying attention.

This is why a new rule will change nothing; officials still have to see it and penalize it and then the league will have to review after the fact and judge accordingly. I just have no faith in the system that they will improve the process and handle it properly. Just remove the instigator penalty and “last 5 minutes” rule and be done with it.

Flyers T-Shirt Ideas

I’m sick and in a mood, so mine aren’t serious—just snark.

- Got goaltender? Searching since 1987.
- Snuggled up against the cap
- I went to a Flyers’ game and all I got was this lousy NTC

Not sure how you can agree with DGB that Cooke didn’t deserve a suspension, since DGB even corrected his story to reflect that it was actually factually wrong and there are rules in the book already for just that situation. Here’s the correction which invalidates his entire article:

(Update: As commenters point out, there are match penalties for “attempts to injure an opponent in any manner”. So it’s wrong to say there’s nothing in the rulebook on this. That said, I can’t remember ever seeing a match penalty called on a hit that didn’t violate any other rule.)

by MarioD on Mar 11, 2010 11:50 AM EST reply actions

Richards’ was assessed a penalty after his hit on Booth, wasn’t he?

by doubleh on Mar 11, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

yes, that’s really my only problem with it. Cooke didn’t even get a penalty. Richards got ejected.

So, essentially, the officials missed it. Cooke got away with it scott free. You cannot compare the two on any level, IMO. I don’t want to hear this “they set a precedent with Richards’ ruling” crap.

I tried to convince the hockey ops staff was to take it outside of the current rule,’’ Chiarelli said. "Use the repeat offender criteria and implement an infraction on an intent to injure. That infraction and the repeat offender should distinguish it from the Richards hit. They didn’t want to.’’[/quote]

I’m still kind of shocked about it, and the license to kill granted to every bgi hitter for the remainder of the season…

by Snevik on Mar 11, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

Ah, I didn’t see that. I agreed with the original article, solely because I didn’t think Cooke broke any rules, much like DGB apparently thought. With that said, outside of an intent to injure, Cooke didn’t break any rules.

As I said in the update, I can’t remember any case where somebody was suspended based on intent to injure without breaking any other rule.

Technically the could have done it, but I still don’t think there’s a precedent here.

I still maintain that trading for Vokoun could have made the difference this year, even at the expense of Jeff Carter.

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 11, 2010 11:57 AM EST reply actions

By “the difference,” do you mean THE difference? I would still put as as an outside shoot at making a serious run, which is exactly where we are now. No reason the sacrifice Carter unless it substantially improves those chances.

by Snevik on Mar 11, 2010 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

yes, i mean “the difference” by having a legitimate shot at beating the Penguins/Capitals, since in my estimation, we’ll have to beat both teams in order to get to the finals. I don’t see us beating one of them (nevermind both) with Leighton/Boosh in net.

if Holmgren could have gotten a pick+Vokoun for Carter, it would have been worth it.

I think the Flyers become the favorite in the conference if they had traded carter for vokoun.

by MarioD on Mar 11, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

yup, Vokoun is very, very underated. JW over at C&B published a goaltending analysis prior to this season based on the last 3 year’s of statistics. The best goalie in the league during that span, Mr. Tomas Vokoun. Best goalie this season, hands down, Mr. Vokoun. No single goalie has kept his team in more games that they deserved to lose.

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 11, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

I like this writeup about Vokoun from Puckdaddy:

Panthers fans are reminded of the Roberto Luongo(notes) days. That was when the team went out for a couple of beers, or seemed to, during the game while the goaltender stands on his head and steals a win on his own or at least keeps it close for when the guys get back. Despite a record of just 6-7-2 over the past few weeks, Vokoun has a stellar 1.98 GAA and 0.938 SP. Now that the team is actually providing a bit of offense (since the deadline), the wins are starting to come as well.

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 11, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

I love the hell out of Vokoun, and would have done it for any Carter/Richie/Roo/Rabbit-less deal. But it’s tough to argue anyone but Washington could be the favorite in the conference. I don’t necessarily think they’ll be coming out of the East with that marshmallow squad, but the best record in the league and a +75 have to be worth something.

I do think they would have been a better team, this year, with a Vokoun-Carter flop, keeping in mind that we have no idea how that locker room reacts to losing a popular guy and leading goal-scorer with a month left in the season. My gut feeling is, the same how it reacts to any negative stimulus: atrociously.

by Snevik on Mar 11, 2010 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

a fair opinion. leighton not giving up bad rebounds or being out of position on said rebound would probably reduce this teams’ GAA by 1 or so.

vokoun is 1-0-3 (2.41 GAA) against pitt this year
he is 0-2-1 (3.21 GAA) vs washington this year

leighton is 1-0 (4 GAA)against pitt,
he is 0-1 vs washington (3 GAA)

so yeah, i’d say the trade would more than work in our favor-carter’s goal production would be more than offset by a lower GAA

yeah, i was going to say something about that (and what HO wrote below), but its all i had for this year. take it FWIW i guess.

then again, we got owned by florida. thankfully hockey is not associative.

plus you have to factor in the fact that the team in front of Vokoun in FL is signifcantly worse than what we have in Philly (even without Carter)
