The leighton extension link is bad. I think you linked to the wrong paper and meant to use this link:

Thanks, I meant this one… http://delcotimes.com/articles/2010/03/12/sports/doc4b99d0cf97f10166267553.txt

But yeah, either one works. Fixed now.

Leighton extension

I know this is going to make everyone’s head spin but since I already have been outed as Paul Holmgren (thanks MarioD) here is what I am thinking. If I can get Leighton to sign an extension now at a reasonable number I will be able to save some money versus signing him in the summer after Leighton has won a playoff series or two. It is a gamble assuming that we will be able to win a playoff series but I have said all along I like our team and I feel we are built for a long playoff run.

by chrislanci on Mar 12, 2010 11:46 AM EST reply actions

that is a very….large…assumption right now.

but hey, i really want you to be right on this one.

I personally rather let this one play itself out and see what happens in the summer. Dan Ellis is FA is he good enough to be a starter. I don’t think we are in all position to take more risks with contracts.

HAHAHA

+1 on that joke about winning a playoff series

WELL DONE PAUL, you are such a joker.

If Homer gives Leighton a contract it sure as hell better be two-way. I am with Mario on this. Leighton’s play so far has been an anomaly. Eventually, he will revert back to being the below average goaltender that he has been his entire career. I don’t understand how Holmgren can consider giving Leighton an extension. Our goaltending is, arguably, the reason that we are incapable of getting to the next level as an elite team in this league. Leighton is not the answer that is going to get this team over the hump. I really don’t see how anyone can argue that. Why sign Leighton knowing that he isn’t going to backstop the Flyers to winning a cup? I feel like this is all pretty obvious.

I wonder where the Flyers would be if they had of signed Craig Anderson in the offseason?

by Mitchell Green on Mar 12, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

don’t start, haha. The list of goalies the Flyers could have had is getting longer every season.

haha, you’re right. No use in looking at the “what could have been.” Whats done is done. I am not unhappy with Homer getting Emery but the void that this team has in goal (and has had since Pelle Lindbergh) must be filled.

Hextall was the fucking man. If only for a short time. 1987 was awesome. If only it could have ended differently. He was still the MVP of a losing team, so you gotta give him his propers.

not just the losing team…the losing team that took gretzky in his prime, and one of the greatest teams ever, to game 7….and almost won.

So… When watching last night’s game, which part made you think they were going to win a playoff series? As much as I would love for you to be right, I feel the back of reality’s hand across my jaw.

Don’t forget to throw in the NTC and pay him millions more than he’s worth. We want him to feel like he’s one of the guys and there’s no better way to make him a Flyer than overpaying him for oh let’s say 5 years with a NTC thrown in.

Seriously though, I would resign him when we have a better idea where we’ll fall in the playoff berth but before the playoffs actually begin. Emery’s gone, he’s not coming back, and given our money situation and limited ability to move players we’d like to move we’re really strapped for money and can’t afford signing someone better. If it’s a reasonable amount then he should do it, but that man needs to have someone proofread his offers because he sucks as a GM.

by Kanayd on Mar 12, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

The Flyers will actually have a lot of money this summer. They have a bunch of holes to fill (2 forwards and 2 dmen) but they have some flexibility to improve this year.

Pronger’s cap hit goes down about $1.3m, and Emery’s $1.5m comes off the books.

by MarioD on Mar 12, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

I just hope Holmgren remembers to give Leighton a no trade clause in his multi-million dollar extension.

by MarioD on Mar 12, 2010 11:58 AM EST reply actions

5 years, 3.5MM per, NTC or no-movement clause, sounds about right.

Fun AP Fact

“The Bruins are one of two NHL franchises with a winning record against the Flyers, at the 81-61-21-6. Montreal is the other. "

I know it shouldn’t make me feel good,. because it doesn’t matter. But the sun is out for the first time in six months today in Chicago, and I’ll take whatever I can get.

Hartnell

Is Hartnell having a bad year or is he the victim of the Lavvy’s new system? Sometimes when there is a coaching change some guys just don’t fit in the new system. I don’t think he will be on the team next year if he keeps up his poor play. But I still think he can be an effective player in this league.

by chrislanci on Mar 12, 2010 12:15 PM EST reply actions

what were Hartnell’s numbers pre Lavvy this year and post?

I honestly don’t know and am too lazy to look it up.

I don’t think its the system as much as he is just frustrated. I think he’s trying to make too much happen, and its backfiring on him. He has no confidence, which is why he is playing so poorly.

From the Flyers Twitter account:

Laviolette confirms Leino will be in tomorrow’s lineup vs. Chicago (1pm, CSN). No word on who comes out or who will be in goal.

Please be Hartnell!

Either way, hopefully that benching did not destroy Leino’s new-found confidence.

There is a fanpost that says Asham is out. Why? I don’t know, but thats the news of the day.

According to an article on CSN Philly it is Asham that will be out. Leino will be on a line with Carter and JVR and Hartnell will be with Girioux and Briere.

Carcillo will not be suspended
This is interesting though:

Ironically, the decision was left in left Devorski’s hands, and he cut the Flyers a break

WOW!!!!!!!! The refs cutting the Flyers a break. How about not allowing those kicked goals the last couple of playoff years.

signing Leighton to an extension is a terrible idea. unless its backup money, Homer should wait until the summer to adress the goaltending one way or another. Leighton looks worse and worse every game.

have geoff, travis and ben ever been to a game at the same time before this season? If not, they probably shouldn’t again.
