Get the Nashville perspective at On the Forecheck
It's no secret that Scott Hartnell has been struggling all season long. After scoring against Chicago and showing a lot of fire against New York over the weekend, returning to the city where he was drafted for the first time since being traded away could be another spark that he needs to get his season back on track.
Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen will return to Nashville for the the first time after being traded away in 2007. By all accounts, players love playing in Nashville and the Flyers duo is no different. Of course, Ryan Parent came over from Nashville as well via trade, but he never played in the city.
We broke down the Predators to an extent earlier today here on the site, so there's really not much to go over. They're an underachieving team defensively with a weak penalty kill and a currently-strong power play. They spread around the offense quite a bit, so they can hurt you at any time. Throw this on top of the fact that they're just four points ahead of ninth-place Calgary in the Western Conference playoff race and you have a team that the Flyers cannot overlook.
Let's hope that with a lot of rest (Lavi cancelled the skate yesterday) and with the bad taste from Sunday in their mouths, the team comes out with guns blazing in this one.
After the jump, questions to answer, lineups, goaltenders and our in-game discussion.
Flyers Line Combinations
Gagne - Richards - Carcillo
Briere - Carter - Hartnell
van Riemsdyk - Giroux - Asham

Questions to Answer
- Does Scott Hartnell build upon the solid games he's put together recently in his Nashville homecoming? What about Kimmo Timonen?
- It's the token question, really: Michael Leighton?
- The Nashville PP could hurt the Flyers tonight, according to reports from the Music City. Can the Flyers stay outta the box like they have in recent games?
Tonight's game is on CSN Philly and 610 WIP. As always, join us here for the conversation and LET'S GO FLYERS!

Yeah I am beginning to think we only carry one goalie anymore. I wasn’t a huge Lavvy fan from the jump but I figured I would give him the benefit of the doubt. The team has played well under him, or at least better than they did with Stevens at the helm but this nonsense of throwing Leighton out there like he is the second coming of Brodeur is insane.
Not to get all Mario on you guys, but he will blame JVR for that goal, and while I wouldn’t pin the blame solely on him, he was out of position for the breakout, which led to the turnover. Said turnover was then quickly transitioned into that terrible defense.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 16, 2010 8:22 PM EDT reply actions
I actually agree that in a perfect world JVR would be honing his skills in the AHL for much of this year, but sadly, we don’t have that luxury.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
Oh, I agree with that too. I said as much at the beginning of the season. And while we do have that luxury (Nodl, Kalinski, Laliberte, et al.) the team would have been worse at the beginning of the season.
And if you’ll argue that he should be benched, I’d argue there are plenty of others who should be benched first.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 16, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed 100%. I don’t think JVR is such a liability that he should be benched. I just don’t think the GM put enough thought into the construction of this roster before the season began with regard to missing pieces, etc. And he gambled on a GT and lost and didn’t get a viable replacement for him at the deadline.

I do like Nashville as a hockey market, unlike Atlanta, Florida, etc. Apologies if I’m sounding ignorant, but is the fanbase growing attendance, attention and ratings wise, etc.?
Our problem is the lack of media attention, and that Nashvillians are addicted to football. Our attendance inreases dramatically after the Titans are done. And we have the most passionate fans in the NHL, even if they may be small in number.

I can personally vouch for the good quality of dollar dogs in Cleveland, as well. Was in the area for a week last summer and decided to go to an Indians game that just so happened to be dollar dog night. Awful team, good hot dogs.

I really enjoyed it, actually. If you have the chance, definitely go. The tickets are fairly priced (ended up maybe 15 rows up along the third base side for a good price), the fans are nice, and the food is good.
I’ll need an excuse to go to Cleveland which just won’t ever happen, but that sounds good.

Phillies games are great, so long as you stay away from the nights that attract the most college kids. They aren’t interested in watching the game; they’re there for the party. They treat CBP like a disco and go there to be seen.

Well, I am in college, and I go to most of the college type games. That said, Im not much for the Party scene, and actually watch the game. I can assume that there are kids that only go because its cheap and tailgate in the lot before hand, but thats everywere, so I guess I don’t notice it. But I will admit, I yell at opposing players and junk when I sit close enough. I said I dont party, but I didn’t say I was a saint haha.

A few bad bounces? An injured goalie? Defensive issues, clearly.
Rectify the defensive issues (easily done if you just re-focus at intermission) and you can score two goals in five minutes. They’re generating a ton of pressure and Rinne looks very shaky. Implying that they’re out of this game just seems a little out there, IMO.
If the same stuff goes on in the second, I’m with you.

I am in no way mailing it in and saying this team lost the game, the Preds were certainly not good, just on the right side of the score, good for them. But the fact that the Flyers clearly out played them and yet are starting at a 2 goal deficit is maddening.

I hate to go down this path, but umm, if we signed Eriksson to an entry-level NHL contract he’s young enough for it to use the slide rule this year if he dresses for less than 10 games… I don’t know enough about Eriksson to know the particulars of whether or not the Flyers would even want to consider it, all I’m saying the slide rule would still be applicable in his case even though it isn’t for Riopel.

The CBA indicates the player under emergency recall is supposed to be on the reserve list, and Riopel isn’t because he only has an AHL contract. I’m not 100% sure there’s no loophole I’m missing, but that’s what I see in the CBA

Thanks for researching that. I’d imagine Holmgren is trying to figure out who he has to call up to ADK to take Backlund’s place – presumably Teslak – and then who to call up to the Flyers. At which point he might have to find another guy to call up to ADK.

Maybe its because I’ve watched two complete games tonight, but has anyone else noticed how much later Boucher goes down to the ice than Leighton, and how much faster he is back on his skates?
That’s because he is a better goalie. I don’t think people fully understand how well he played before getting hurt this year, the team sold him down the river and he stood on his head anyway.

Man, the way they’ve played since the Pronger goal is the way they need to always play. Hard checking in the offensive zone, smart pinching by the D to keep the puck in the zone, solid backup by the forwards if they pinch doesn’t work. Stretching the neutral zone on the breakout, a la the pass to Hartnell in the final minute there.
That’s the type of game that really makes it hard on the opposition.

I actually know quite a few people who love shootouts—and they’re actually pretty hardcore hockey fans. They think I hate them because the Flyers are historically bad at them, which is untrue. I hate them because I feel they have nothing to do with the 65 minutes that preceeded the act. It’s a skills competition to determine the outcome of a game. What if we went 10 innings in baseball and had it decided by a HR derby?

If you look here, you can find more reasons to hate the shootout. Like if it didn’t exist last year, we would have played Carolina first round (all else being equal).

Oh I agree, also they should change the value of points when a team wins if they want to keep them like in the Olympics. Why is a Shootout win worth the same amount as a regulation win?

so does that mean they should get 1 point and we get 1 point or we don’t get a point and they get 1 point.?
3 points for a regulation win, 2 for OT 1 for shoutout, nothing if you lose.

Right, but I think that its even more telling that, by playing in the East, the Flyers have an easier schedule and still wouldn’t make the playoffs in the West. I mean Pittsburgh would only be in 5th. The disparity of this league unbelievable . . .

Well...
… losses always suck, but I’ll take the point.
Dallas scored 8 goals against the Sharks tonight. Hopefully that takes care of their offensive output for the next game or so.
If the Flyers could somehow combine their level of play right before the Olympic Break with Boucher’s play in November/December, that would be a blessing.
Of unicorns.
