Get the Dallas perspective at Defending Big D

We're going to keep this preview short and sweet, because there's one key to this game and one key to this game only. He wears number 33 for the Philadelphia Flyers. His name is Brian Boucher. He's your starting goaltender.
It's his first start since the middle of December, so who knows how he's going to play. Coming in out of the bullpen is a different situation and in most of those chances, Boucher has performed admirably. In fact, as a starter he's done well too, but most people aren't really looking at that.
They see his 4-12-2 record and automatically think the Flyers are doomed, but the fact of the matter is that Boucher was not even close to the reason the Flyers sucked through November and December. In fact, some may go as far as to say Boucher was the Flyers best player in that stretch.
In any event, this is a big night for Brian Boucher. The net is officially his now, and if the Flyers want to have any chance this season, he needs to own it. Let's see some 2000-era Boosh out there tonight.
Last time the Flyers played in Dallas: March 13, 2007.
After the jump, lineups, questions and our in-game discussion.
Flyers Line Combinations
Gagne - Richards - Carcillo
Briere - Carter - Hartnell/Leino
van Riemsdyk - Giroux - Asham
Powe - Betts - Laperriere
Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Krajicek
Parent - Coburn
Hartnell is sick, might not play. Leino would replace.
Dallas Line Combinations
Morrow - Ribeiro - Segal
Ott - Richards -Eriksson
Neal - Benn - Lehtinen
Barch - Petersen - Sutherby
Grossman - Robidas
Daley - Skrastins
Niskanen - Woywitka
Yes, that Woywitka.
Starting Goaltenders
Questions to Answer
- Obvious question: how does Boucher play tonight?
- The Flyers dominated the Stars on home ice last time they met. Any continuation of that?
- Dallas is desperate. Seven points out, 12 games left. Do they appear to be packing it in or do they come out firing?

I have said all along and I will say it again, I am more confident with Boucher in the pipes than I ever was with Leighton.
Same, I just hate when Boosh comes in mid-game. He sucks when he doesnt start, but as a starter, he played great.

I am happy we have him over Biron

Biron was a decent GT while he was here in Philly. I love how my douchebag Pens fans pointed and laughed and said, “You don’t have a goaltender,” when his stats were basically the same as MAF’s. Difference is MAF got hot at the right time last season and Marty did not. Marty did stand on his head for us in 2008, lest we forget—and stole us the first series.

Pens-Bruins live on the NHL Network and NCAA ganes coming back right now.
Flyers should’ve been playing last night.
Fuck, I think this is just an FSN Pittsburgh broadcast, not an NHL Network broadcast. Though it will be even more entertaining when they make Crosby bleed.
hahah you think? I read an article that the Bruins were talking about how there would be no pay back for the Savard hit…now clearly they have to say that but if Cooke had his arm broken tonight it wouldn’t shock me.
realistically, i don’t see anything happenning.
personally, i would demand crosby’s teeth on my desk

No one is going to take a baseball swing at anyone. But I will be in complete shock if this isn’t a testy, physical game for 60 minutes with lots of after-whistle skirmishes.
And if someone is the middle of the ice with their head down, I expect a Bruin will go for the decapitation.
but i hope you are right

I hope Cooke gets it big time. He is a scum bag. His hit on Savard sucked but the one he delivered two days later was even worse, considering what he had just done to Savard.
Cooke just lost that fight.

Thorton kicked the shit out of Cook about 4 seconds after he jumped on the ice.
The key was, Thorton threw about five punches after Cooke went down. Which I’m fine with. Cooke’s got no respect for the game and other players so Thorton returned the favor and pounded him when he was vulnerable.
for doing the right thing, apparently

Not instigating, that would’ve been 2+5+10.
I checked nhl.com and they have it listed as Rule 87(b): Conduct detrimental to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Aren’t the two riles essentially redundant? I mean, he IS the Penguins, right?

What the hell was that? I’m not talking about Boosh, but about how easily they were allowed to move that puck in our zone
Parent got beat behind the net, Briere had to collapse down to stop the Star from walking out front, which created a 4-3 in the slot. Dallas did a good job of finding the open man.
It looked way too easy to me, but I don’t have the benefit of a DVR to watch repeated replays
by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 18, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I saw Pronger jump into the slot, leaving Hartnell and Carter near the point. Pronger jumped up to cover the guy in the slot after Hartnell didn’t follow him.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 18, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
If I saw it right, there was a Star going back towards the point as Eriksson came down the slot. That was Carter’s guy, so I believe Carter is exonerated.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 18, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I believe there were Stars on each point, the one in the slot Pronger took, and then Ott.
Then you have Parent/Briere/Star to Boucher’s right.
I believe Briere was in the middle of the ice to have been the player to drop down on Parent’s man.
Guessing now, I don’t think Carter or Hartnell realized Briere had vacated that position.
That sounds accurate.
To me, I’m thinking this is what happened: Parent got beat, Briere left his position to help out (the correct play), forcing the pass to the slot. That player moved down from the point, beating Hartnell. Pronger left Ott to cover him (the correct play), leaving Ott wide open.
Final score: Briere and Pronger +1, Parent and Hartnell -1, Carter 0. (Giving/taking one for right play/getting beat.)

by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 18, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with most of that, but not sure:
1) Where is the other Star?
2) Should Carter or Hartnell have covered the slot?
1) Not sure… Good question.
2) I’m assuming Hartnell based on the replay I saw, but it might have been Carter’s responsibility to make sure Hartnell knew it was his man, depending on where the 5th Star was.

More stand-up than most goalies. But, if you want to get technical, I hate hybrid goalies. The style works for Nabby, not Boucher.
I don’t necessarily hate hybrid. If the style works for the goalie, go ahead and use it. The problem is, I don’t see Boucher’s style working for him as well. Most shots are low on the ice. Boucher needs to have quick footwork to get the cross-crease passes which he seems to lack at times. Butterfly goalies take away the bottom of the net very well and can get across the crease better. Stand-up goalies have better rebound control though.
There’s a reason the stand-up style has essentially died out and the butterfly is the new style.
As far as I can see, butterfly is not really a style for most goalies anymore (such as it was when Roy used it) as it is a tool.
Only a few goalies in the league would butterfly for nearly every shot, Giguere, Hiller and Steve Mason come to mind, whereas most of the others like Miller, Fleury and such would use it often but not for every shot. And then you have Brodeur, Thomas and Nabokov making their own rules.
The strength of taking away the low shots is countered by leaving a lot of space over the shoulders which is often how you will see butterfliers beaten.
I agree that Boosh’s lateral movement isn’t as good as Emery’s, but by standing up a lot more he saves shots that may be goals against Emery.
"NZFlyerfan"
I agree with you. I use the style terms loosely to make it simpler. I would just rather give up a goal over the shoulder than from the side. At least when you’re down you force the shooter to make a good shot to beat you.
Essentially, what I was trying to say was that I just don’t like the way Boucher plays.
Told you guys they’d make a run.

Yeah, I just saw that on the replay. This is a prime candidate for your breakdowns, since something clearly went wrong.
Watching it again, Briere did a great job preventing him from coming out front. If I saw it correctly, everyone was in the area they were supposed to, but Briere’s man passed it to Hartnell’s man, who was no longer covered by Hartnell, forcing Pronger to leave Ott.

I didn’t have time to think this through and get into it on the Coburn post, but that Ribiero break away is why Coburn should be out there: Krajicek is an idiot.
Krajicek and Hartnell were on the points because Carle had pinched, and Krajicek decided to skate into the zone. He’s the dman back, he’s got to stay back and at the center of the ice, not go wandering down the zone.
They’re too stupid to realize they could have given up nothing while paying him half of what they are now?

Well, I see your point too, but Hartnell left his position too. Yes, Krajicek can’t do that, but I’m guessing he assumed Hartnell stayed with his man rather than go into the slot.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 18, 2010 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions
First off, that’s not Hartnell’s position (that’s Lavi’s fault). Even if Hartnell had been in the center of the ice, you don’t want Ribiero on Hartnell on that break. You want a dman back.
Second, Hartnell is on the PP in the O-zone, he’s trying to shake free of Dallas players, not stay with them.
No, everything you said is correct. But if he’s “covering” the point, he has to, you know, cover the point. He didn’t.
This isn’t to say Krajicek is innocent, he’s not. But they’re both idiots, one just has an excuse (I’m a forward!).
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 18, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Basically, I’m saying both Hartnell and Krajicek needed to retreat. Neither did. That should have been a 1-on-2, resuling in Ribiero dumping the puck in at the red line. Both pinched, resulting in a breakway. Krajicek can’t pressure the guy who just blocked his shot, but Hartnell also can’t abandon the point, even if that shot wasn’t blocked.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 18, 2010 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay.
I don’t know where he was. He passed from all the way on the side of the ice, and Ribiero went up the middle. I never saw Hartnell in the picture again.
Given Carle caught up, I am unsure if he and Hartnell were switching back as Krajicek shot. That would explain how Carle caught him.
I think they were, but Hartnell jumped up too soon.

if you are going to play you gotta play all the way you can’t be worried about guys because they are sick either you are in and play were you would or you sit
actually that’s really my point…he shouldn’t be playing if he’s a liability esp. with the condensed sch. If he gets more sick that could be bad and he just might spread it around to the lockeroom
Is the Carter line getting mis-matched because Dallas has last change, or are they just having a worse defensive game than normal? Also, Hartnell’s illness might have something to do with it too.

I heard someone (maybe here) speculate that it was because of the LTIR exception that we couldn’t count the bonus this year…. I can’t find language in the CBA that supports that or denies it, really. We’re allowed to exceed the cap because of Rathje being on LTIR, but maybe we can’t use the cushion created by his injury to fit the bonus into this year. I honestly don’t know

No, it’s not. He’s 9th out of the 23 man roster.
He’s the 6th highest paid forward on the team. He’d be 4th amongst defensemen. He’s 9th among the 21 skaters on the roster. And he’s paid more than any of the goalies they have, have had, or will have on the roster this year.
Is that team average?

That last flurry was huge.
The initial save was an easy one, but the key was kicking the puck out sideways instead of it sitting in front of him. By kicking it to the side, he was still in sound position to stop the rebound, even though he had been sliding out of the net to stop the initial shot.
Bouch is never going to stop either of those first two goals. But that last save he made in the game is the difference between him and Leighton.
good points Leighton did hang on tight in the Blackhawks game though still sticking with my thoughts all season SCORE 3 and win
Flyers are 31-7-1 when scoring 3 or more goals
vs
5-21-4 when scoring 2 or fewer goals
They remind me so much of the Phillies sometimes.

Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Suck against mediocre tenders, do better against good ones. Phils had a similar record last year when scoring 3 or more runs. If they scored fewer than 3, they tended to lose.
