CSN: Predators Unlikely To Trade Hamhuis
Tim Panaccio is reporting that it appears Nashville will hold on to Dan Hamhuis at the deadline. A quote from the article:
"Three teams have made offers on Hamhuis, and they have not been accepted," said a source close to the situation. "Dan wants to stay in Nashville. At this point, it looks like the Predators are going to keep him."
The sources said that Poile told three clubs – believed to be the Flyers, Boston and either New Jersey or Toronto – that unless someone "knocks his socks off," he would not move Hamhuis.
Nashville has inquired about Ryan Parent but likely wants something else that the Flyers don’t have: a draft pick.

Wagers on the deal Nashville declined:
Parent + Clackson for Hamhuis + 4th.

I hope this wasn’t what Holmgren was consuming his time with. I guess this team can stand pat and in all likelihood get knocked out of the first round for yet another year or they can make some controversial and creative moves to start reshaping the line up. But under no circumstances, other than consultation with the dalai lama “got that going for us” luck, will this team win a Stanley Cup. So why are they romantically loyal to any player on this team that can be moved or talked into being moved? No one is safe on a team that is not winning the championship in my opinion.
I have to think this is posturing at this point from Poile. He wants more, and by getting this out there it makes other teams either up the ante or get out. If it gets closer to 3PM tomorrow and no one bites, he comes off it a little. It makes no sense for us to carry Grebeshkov and Hamhuis.

I agree. And I’m sure this happens frequently, which then makes me wonder how successful these statements are.

I keep reminding myself that most of these tweets not involving McKenzie or Dreger are total BS. The fact that those two are dead quiet and there’s nothing out of Nashville makes me think a deal is still likely.

Just heard from a source in Nashville that says the Preds are asking for Coburn and Parent for Hamhuis. That sounds steep.

Sorry if I step on any language policies, but thats bullshit. Why does Nashville need Weber/Suter/Klein/Franson/Grebeshkov/Boullion/Parent/Coburn ALL on the roster??

I am offended by your lack of an apostrophe in “thats” (sic).
All jokes aside, that’s a good question. If the Predators are asking for those two then they must have a three-way in the works where Coburn or another of your d-men gets swapped for a scorer.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’d think so. It’d probably be Coburn as he’s more valuable than Parent. This is weird.

Franson/Grebshekov/Parent/Coburn are all RFA, and Boullion is UFA. It would give Nashville a better chance of holding on to enough dmen to have continuity next year, and if anyone except Beef Boy gets grabbed, you get picks in compensation. I’m not saying it’s a good reason, but it’s one that jumps out from looking at their contract situations.

yeah, but
Nashville has elite level Defense prospects right around the corner that will be ready next year in Jon Blum and Teemu Laakso

My point was they are just different players fulfilling different roles. Crosby and Ovechkin have similar statistics but do completely different tasks.

They are both a # 3 or 4 defenseman. But I was more on board with the idea you made that each team is really just replacing an item they already have and the Flyers losing an item they could actually still use even if they got Hamhuis. And by the way one of those superstars is a stone cold winner and other just gets a lot of points.

It’s not necessary that he’s making more mistakes, but the ones he makes are highlight reel mistakes.
It’s tough, really. The numbers tell you he’s only slightly behind last year’s career year for him, but your eyes tell you he’s prone to lots of mental lapses and terrible luck.

Agreed, he is more of a victim of last years success and the expectation of him fighting to be a top two defenseman. But other than a few glaring mistakes this year he is a solid defenseman. I can’t say anything about Hamuis I haven’t watched to much of him and although I don’t like stats it is the only way to try an educate yourself about a player.

Alright, cool.
Reposted from Japers’ Rink, from a comment by On the Forecheck’s Chris Burton:
“In terms of what I’m hearing from coaches and management, they are saying they want to have the best team possible and that we’re buyers, not sellers this year. We want to make a run at the playoffs, and if that’s having me in the lineup to make our team better, that’s what they want to do. If there’s a trade that will make our team better that I’m part of going the other way, that could happen, too. But they said they don’t want to just get rid of me for draft picks. I think they understand that the team has a good shot at doing something really good this year and you don’t want to pass up on that.”

Well, you guys are overloaded on right wing anyway – Dumont, Sullivan, Ward, Tootoo, Jones, Hornqvist, and Belak are all right wings. Maybe we’re tossing you guys Leino and Parent for Hamhuis and one of your cheap right wingers, since your only left winger is Erat?
Hurrah for idle speculation!
"When you make your final stand

Massive space – Nashville was somewhere around 12.5 million under the cap even before waiving Jones, and he makes under a million.

by M from Pdaddy on Mar 2, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions
They don’t have a single forward making over 4.5 million, and only 7 making over 1 million (one of whom missed enough time that his cap hit is under 1 million). Only four defensemen make over 1 million, and one of those is the new Grebeshkov. They’re spending about as much for their entire defense as we’re spending on Pronger and Timonen (12.583 for those two guys, 13.264 for Nashville’s entire blue line). It’s actually kind of embarassing to see how little they’re spending and how much they’re getting out of it compared to the Flyers.

Maybe if the Flyers were coached by a Russian Nesting Doll then they could get maximum value out of small contracts.
I have a theory that, right before every game, Trotz splits in half and Jordin Tootoo comes out. Then he goes back in after the game is over.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
They may be operating under a budget that’s under the cap, though. Our budget is the salary cap and beyond in some cases, but that isn’t the case in most cases, including probably a team like Nashville.

Vokoun:
There has been a ton of talk about how the Flyers cannot afford Vokoun’s $5.7 mil cap hit. With the ~$2.6 million in space gotten through Syvret, Cote, and Emery, here are the multiple ways this trade could happen:
- Move Jeff Carter’s $5 mil hit
- Move Gagne’s $5.25 mil hit
- Move Hartnell’s $4.2 mil hit
- Move Carle’s $3.44 mil hit
- Move Leino ($0.8 mil), Coburn ($1.3 mil), and waive Boucher ($0.925)
- Move Parent ($0.85 mil), Coburn ($1.3 mil), and waive Boucher ($0.925)
etc.

Well, he’s only due $5 million over the final two years (13-14, 14-15), so I’m assuming that’s so that the Flyers can skirt the CBA’s rules have some flexibility when Briere is 36, 37 years old.

Acquiring Vokoun would be something the Flyers haven’t felt necessary to do in the last um, say 20+ years, so I don’t know why they would change now.

Yeah, but I really like the idea of acquiring the best unknown goaltender in the NHL who has another year (and only another year) on his contract.
If you can’t win with Vokoun, you have him, Gagne and Carter coming off the cap. (That’s a combined $15.95 million cap hit.) That’s a good time to step back and say “this didn’t work, try again.” Acquiring Vokoun allows you the flexibility of saying “we’re trying to win now” while allowing you an out after next season to say “Homer is fired, we’re trying a new direction”. Win-Win, in my opinion.

But who do you move to get Vokoun?
Hartnell?
At the end of the day, what is the more pressing issue? Goal tending or Offense?
Well, that is the question. I’d personally look at Gagne or Hartnell first, then move onto the package type deals: Parent/Leino, Coburn, Phantom, so long as a pick is coming with Vokoun (unlikely).
In general, the point of that comment was that Vokoun’s cap hit isn’t keeping the trade from happening, it’s the lack of pieces to get him and/or the unwillingness (Carter) or inability (Gagne/Hartnell) to move the salaries necessary.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 2, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions
I agree but that statement could be made for most trades that won’t happen…the Flyers have no real assets outside of who is on their current roster. So they really can not add without subtracting present day value. That is a problem when you don’t have a surplus of anything, except centers. And none of them appear likely to be moved.
Exactly. But all the “Vokoun isn’t happening” statements are quickly followed with “cap hit too high.” While that may be true in the abstract, the Flyers can fit the cap hit through a variety of ways (waiving Leino, Parent, and Boucher fits them in, but leaves no healthy scratches on the roster). Whether that makes the team stronger or not is a separate discussion.

That goes for Halak and would have gone for Giguere. They should have gotten all over that Halak and Plechanik for Carter when they wanted him gone.
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 2, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
But Halak is young and inexpensive. Vokoun is still at the top of his game (not prime), so when his contract is up, you could cut bait and go after a Halak-type.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 2, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions
But he and Plechanek are disposable at the end of the season. Halak is an RFA so you have either negotiating rights or get a pick depending on if he looks good and Plechanek is a good scoring winger and again your decision to sign or let him walk.

oh, i’m not disagreeing that Vokoun couldn’t be had for the right price and I’m not buying the “we can’t fit him under the cap” arguments either.
I’m just saying that in 20+ years I’ve watched the Flyers, their history tells me that they don’t regard the goalie position with much weight.
I can’t imagine how good Vokoun would be on a team that actually had a semblance of offense and a decent defense. I mean the guy has 7 SO’s and some of the best stats in the league playing behind an offense that has the firepower of a cap gun and a defense that gives up 40 shots routinely like a politician gives out kisses at a rally with young moms and their babies.

He was earlier at least. Plus, the numbers from Who’s on the Ice When Goals Are Scored? story were pretty remarkable:
First, Chris Pronger is 13th in the NHL in this category, but when you look at Gabe’s Qualcomp stat, this number becomes even more impressive. Of the 12 players with a lower GAON/60, only two are facing above average competition (0.000). Further, Pronger’s 0.120 nearly doubles the second highest qualcomp in the 12 players ahead of him: 0.066. If that doesn’t compute, Pronger is facing the 14th toughest competition among all NHL defensemen with 20 games played, and he’s allowing the 13th fewest goals against. Quite the impressive feat.

Vokoun fits easily under the cap. Waive JVR and assign Cote to the AHL and the Flyers’ cap space is over four million dollars. If you add Vokoun, you have three goaltenders, and Boucher becomes a cap casualty, is waived, and his $900k salary is enough to fit Vokoun under the cap.
However, I’ve gotta think a trade for Vokoun would involve NHL roster players anyway, which would make it even easier to add Vokoun.
You mean Carter? I would seriously consider it. I really wanted a scoring winger but a real goaltender is right at the top.
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 2, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions
If they traded carter, they wouldn’t have to do anything else to get under the cap.
I’d trade Carter for Vokoun and a 2012 2nd in a heartbeat. Not sure why Florida wouldn’t do that unless they plan a multi-year rebuilding project.
Sold! If your going to win big you got bet big. If Carter is the only chip on this team, and they need to change this team, well lets at least get a legitimate puzzle piece.

Trade Carter really ??
I am really puzzled why some many people want to trade Carter he is ranked 13th in the league in goal scoring and the leading scorer on the team, he is 25 years old. What do you want him to do? Catrer for a goalie makes no sense what so ever. Scoring is the issue here we ranked 11th in the league in team GA/G moving top scorer for a goalie is ridiculous. Especially when the goalie is 33 years old.
Q – Why does Carter not get any respect around here?
A – Philly Fans are always down on their best players. Carter, Ryan Howard, Mike Schmidt, McNabb, Asante Samuel, even Pronger is getting criticized I mean jesus none of these guys are or were the problem.
Not because he isn’t good. I don’t want to hurt his feelings or anything but incase you haven’t noticed the team needs to be shaken up and they also need some cap room. Carter scored 46 goals last year, but since coming in second in the scoring race doesn’t get you a parade maybe dealing the only chip this team has at a position that is totally covered without him it has to be considered.

Plus he’s one of the few people the Flyers could trade (does not have a NTC) that would actually get the Flyers something in return.

Shaken up by trading your best player. You really think this team without Carter is better team. You are the one that is need of being shaken up my friend.
Hey Hey now, no violence. It is like the tree falling in the woods philosophy, if you have a best player in a flawed line up does that make up for not having a championship? I would trade any player on this team if it would start the team going in a direction that leads to a championship. If he stays and we get a scoring winger and a legitimate goaltender well hell I would be happier’n shit, but it is not likely. Either way this GM is not qualified enough to make any of the necessary moves to work out the kinks so all of this talk is probably mute. The ship ain’t gettin right because the cappin’ don’t know the difference between north and south. Let alone the earth is round.
