  • Without a recap for last night's loss, here's my comment of the night"I want to believe that Boosh just let that one go by and thought to himself "How do you feel when someone doesn’t play for you mother f---ers! Take that!" - KreiderDesigns
  • A depressing stat:  "Flyers have been down 3-1, 2-1, 2-1, 2-0 after the first period of their last 4 games." [John Boruk]
  • But Jacob De Serres won both games for Brandon this weekend, stopping 48 of 53 shots. Game 2 recap: [Luber's Lounge] Game 1 Recap: [Luber's Lounge]

  • Hey, Chris Pronger "knows Flyers can't afford to take nights off."  Wow, I'm glad he's aware of this.  UGH. [CSNPhilly]

  • Thought the Avalanche were playing over their head?  So are the Sharks. No, really. [Behind The Net]
  • An amazing fight took place over the weekend between Cam Janssen and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond.  It lasted three minutes, so that alone should make it worth your time. [SBNation]
  • As a Michigan fan, this story is great.  A no-name goaltender backstops the Cinderella Wolverines hockey team. [Puck Daddy]
  • Lastly, another very good story.  Anthony SanFilippo asks:  Would you rather the Flyers make the playoffs (and surely get bounced) or collapse? [In The Room]

SanFilippo with the perfect story…

AND that’s why Boucher was on the bench for 3 months…..

Because the team hates him*?

- I took the step from “doesn’t play in front of him” to “hates him”.

Quite possibly they do and the reason…2-1 game, they are fighting hard for the tie and he let’s in a softie. I’m not sure what it is, but he just doesn’t look comfortable in net. This team certainly isn’t helping him out, that’s for sure. They should all just start shooting pucks at his head in practice and get it over with.

The thing i’ve noticed with him in practically every game he plays, whether starting or relife…he lets in 1 or 2 goals (whether you want to argue they are marginal or not isn’t important), then he plays great the rest of the way. The problem is that this team plays way different down 2 goals then up 2 goals and they don’t seem to give Boucher the luxury of getting that lead.

I think the best part of this ridiculous and bullsh*t final month+ schedule is that it might actually expedite Boucher’s return to game-day form. He’s going to see a lot of action in the remainder o the season. Hopefully that will shock his system back to what it should be. But while that’s happening the team has to understand that if they don’t play defense he won’t be ANY good. Also, Lavi needs to understand that you don’t start a goalie for 3 months and this is what you get from him when your effed by an injury to your number one.

Really? Cause SJ did it with Boucher and he was fine.

by Pondhockey on Mar 22, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

My question then would be: How is that different than Leighton letting in at least 1 really weak goal every game? I’m specifically thinking of the game in New Jersey right before the break.

timing Geoff timing letting in a weak goal with 2 goal lead is not that same thing as letting in a weak goal to create a 2 goal deficit and kill all the momentum after we taken over the game and were pouring it on in the under end for the last 10 minutes

goaltending is 90% timing Leighton was much better at the all important timely saves Boucher had bad timing last night especially to let in a softie. The Dallas game was much better with that hugh save on Scratch-Itch (sp?/jk). That was huge and kept the team in it. The last two games he hasn’t made a big save early despite the breakdowns to keep it tied or the big save late to preserve the comeback hope.

by chrislanci on Mar 22, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

How is it different from Leighton giving up the exact same goal in New York last Sunday? Down a goal, he let in a softie-wrist shot from the boards to wrap up the game.

by MarioD on Mar 22, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you there yeah that was the same thing for the most part. However in New York it wasn’t like we were controlling the game on a way to a comeback with shift after shift of scoring chances. In Dallas and last night we had to momentum coming off the 1st goal building towards the tying goal. In NYR we scored 1st and really never got back in the game.

by chrislanci on Mar 22, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

oh I agree with you, it baffles me that the team plays just terrible in front of Boucher. Chris has it right though, timing is everything. Boucher’s first 2 goals weren’t that good last night either, but at least they were early and the team fought hard to get back in the game. He absolutely has to make that save on the 3rd goal. The significance of him choking just makes it worse going forward. That’s also a big mental problem now.

Boucher is a veteran with I doubt he will let that bother him for too long. The problem is the teams confidence in the goalie might to failing and they could then be worry too much about defense and be a step slow or hesitant on the offensive end. A more of a thinking instead of reacting type of thing.

inconsistent scoring

This team has been one winger short all season and letting Knuble walk as I predicted has been the worst thing Homer did. If Homer would have started the summer with the mindset that Randy Jones playing on the 3rd D-pairing is not worth 3.5 million dollars and traded him for anything or just sent him down to the AHL we could have easily kept Knuble.

Knuble scored the dirty goals and scored consistently and barely missed a game. Hartnell scores in bunches and Carcillo just doesn’t have the hands to play on the top line. Plus Knuble was a good voice in the looker room. By moving Knuble and Lupul we did lose 50 goals from our lineup and more important broke up both of our top 2 scoring lines. We haven’t had the depth to try to run 3 scoring lines since.

Therefore we should be going top loaded with Giroux a winger, he was a RW for his entire career and should be with Richards and Gagne. Briere should be with Hartnell / JVR and Carter. JVR should be centering the position he played his last year in college the 3rd line with Asham and Powe and Carcllo back where he belongs with Betts and Lappy.

We lost a goalie to injury and that sucks then we lost the backup so basically we are screwed for this season. No need to trade anyone to try to salvage this season and hurt the future. The offseason is going to be wear the work gets done. For those reasons I want the Pens in the 1st round to maybe play spoiler and fuck the repeat up because a one series and done vs. anyone else would not be rewarding at all.

by chrislanci on Mar 22, 2010 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

Let’s not kid ourselves… One and out will not be rewarding at all. No matter the team that beats them.

So is Backlund getting the start next game ;)

by LegionofDoom on Mar 22, 2010 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised at all. Also, If he does I wouldn’t be surprised by a 1-0 shutout win that’s the best team defensive game we’ve ever played and then we ride him through the playoffs with a new-look stingy defense that will lay out and clear the porch with regularity.

Really? Despite the obvious, “this team is so inconsistent, anything can happen” argument, the whole “this team could become amazing defensively” is just too far fetched for me to believe.

I think they did it with Leighton though, at least initially. I thought the defense certainly tightened up around Leights when he first played. Now, riding him thru the playoffs is a different story…

Maybe he is like hiller or varlamov last year didn’t see much of them all season than they were the guys in the playoffs and they did pretty well. Just maybe we can get lucky and have that.

I wasn't even a year old but I stayed up to be outside the Vet with my Dad and Mom when the Phillies won the World Series 1980.

by Christopher A on Mar 22, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Again, I only saw three of the goals scored this weekend (two ATL, one PHI). But watching Atlanta’s fourth goal on Saturday and then reading that Coburn and Parent were both a minus-3, I was not at all shocked Lavy split those two up.

Basically, tightening up is one thing. Having Coburn, Parent, and Krajicek/Bartulis suddenly become “shut down” guys who regularly clear the porch is just too far-fetched for me. Coburn did that once, but then he got hit in the face with a puck. As I’ve said before, Parent just isn’t strong enough yet. And neither Krajicek nor Bartulis should be expected to do that – that’s not their game.

Yeah my statement was a bit hyperbole and a lot bitter. I just don’t understand how things that weren’t really a problem with Leights or even Emery, things that your taught to do from day one are suddenly the equivalent of climbing everest when you put Boosh in net.

"Good night. Good hockey."

by KreiderDesigns on Mar 22, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I figured as much. And I don’t understand it either. While Chris’ mention of “timing” makes plenty of sense when talking about Atlanta’s third goal yesterday, that’s only one example. The team played like crap in Atlanta and wasn’t exactly amazing in Dallas.

nope we weren’t but once we got the 1st goal we got the momentum and Boucher kept that momemtum but not giving a goal especially a soft goal that is even worse.

by chrislanci on Mar 22, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

C’mon guys, it’s not that bad. If they do pull a New York Mets level collapse and miss the playoffs, they’ll get better next year. It’s not like Holmgren has pushed the team into a bad spot by trading away draft picks, signing players to inflated contracts and giving those players no-movement clauses.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room."

by Grp_Cpt_Lionel_Mandrake on Mar 22, 2010 10:51 AM EDT reply actions

draft pick thing is getting really old, a late teen pick in the draft is not going to help this team for 3 years, the inflated contract thing was the price at the time if cap would have continued to rise as it was Danny’s contract wouldn’t look that bad, so blame AIG on that one. Bottom line it is the players to blame Hartnell, Coburn have been huge disappointments, Hartnell should be in his prime at 27 and having a even better year than last year especiall If he would even be at his average of 25 goals this year we wouldn’t be complaining too much either. Pronger has been everything and more that we could have hoped he is a having a Norris Trophy year and will probably finish in the top 3 in the voting at worst. Letting Knuble go was the huge mistake we could have gotten him cheap on the cap with the veteran incentives and had a really good value contract for once.

practice we talking about practice man..

Therein on the radio was saying the Flyers have been giving off days in between games due to the crowded schedule. And not practicing good have something to do with the slow starts to the game. I think this was the same issue the team ran into they shit the bed in December, crowded schedule no practice time. Maybe this team just needs that routine of going out there practicing to say sharp and focus and come to the game ready to go. It very well could being we are fairly young team and the lines are new this season so the chemistry isn’t really established yet. I don’t know but maybe that is the case, thoughts…

SORRY, FRACTURED ANKLE

But, really, what’s the difference.

Buh bye, Flyers.

by Dinky on Mar 22, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

At least it’s a non-displaced fracture…. but still……this could be a bad one. Ankle fractures depending on where they are, are notoriously bad healers.

“It takes at least 6-8 weeks for even a simple ankle fracture to heal. It will be several months before you can return to intense physical activity.”

Add to that the possibility of bone spur calcification over the fracture site…..this could be a long term chronic issue.

Dammit Carter!

Only kidding it isn’t his fault, but being the ultimate negative hindsight is 20/20 guy I guess they should have traded him. That was sarcasm as well. That really is not going to help the team at this point.
