Back in January, I stumbled upon a few photos of Johan Backlund's goalie mask. Adorned in Flyers colors and Flyers logos, the angle I took for the story I wrote about his mask was that he had 'high hopes' for making the Flyers roster. Those hopes were evident in the probably-expensive piece of artwork he put on his head each night with the Phantoms.

I also mentioned how Backlund playing with the Flyers this season was pretty unlikely, given the fact that the goalie wasn't even trusted to be a backup behind Brian Boucher once Ray Emery went down. Paul Holmgren made that clear when he picked Michael Leighton off of waivers.

So it's a nice way to sum up this season, perhaps, in that there are eight games left in the season, Backlund is getting his first NHL start today against our cross-state rivals, and most of us are actually pretty happy with this occurrence. We haven't been winning with Boosh in goal, whether that's his fault or not, and the team really doesn't have much else to lose at this point.

It's Backlund's net today. He's kept a weak Phantoms team alive in the AHL all season long. Let's see if he can keep this Flyers team above the playoff bubble.

Good lineup news out of Pitt today: Evgeni Malkin will miss his third game in a row. Sergei Gonchar is sick and may miss the game as well. Matt Carle is a game-time decision for the Flyers.

Pittsburgh clinches a playoff spot with a point today. Don't let it happen. This could be the Flyers last ever game at Civic Mellon Arena. Let's win it.

After the jump, lines, goalies, and questions to answer.

Questions to Answer

  1. Martin Havlat, after the Wild game: "Once they got the lead, they gave up." Does the motivation of playing the Penguins translate into [enter Flyers' marketing slogan here] hockey?
  2. How's Backlund look?
  3. How much does missing Malkin hurt the Pens today? Same goes for Gonchar, if he is indeed out.
  4. Can the Flyers win their last regular season game at Mellon Arena?

Bob?

I think a better joke would be: His mask says his nickname is “Backe”, but I’d much prefer we call him “Bernie.” It rhymes and reminds you of the best goalie ever.

Maybe for once our unnamed goalie can make the other team look silly and “pitch” a shutout? You know, what the Flyers seem to allow every other unnamed goalie to do to them.

If people called Niitty Frank for Frank Nitti, I think we can call Backlund Bob for Bob Backlund.

Even though he was out of the crease, he was still impeded from making the save. That was just a shitshow all around. Apparently, the trailing ref made the call, despite the other ref calling it a goal. If I were a Flyers fan, I would be pissed too.

It should’ve been goalie interference. Since that call was missed, the goal should’ve counted.

Well I appreciate your honesty and I agree. There should have been a goalie interference call. But when you say over the PA that it’s incidental contact, that means that you basically pretend like nothing happened and the play ended as is. Except they pretended like nothing happened and then changed the call which is contradictory and makes no friggin sense.

HERE’S the correct rule. Number 69.

Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.

Broad Street Hockey - SBN's Philadelphia Flyers blog. Got goaltending? Searching since 1987.

by Travis Hughes on Mar 27, 2010 2:18 PM EDT reply actions

Well then I guess the trailing ref believed that our player did not make a “reasonable effort to avoid such contact”? Otherwise the rule dictates it should have been a goal.

by EREX21 on Mar 27, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a lot of judgment in that rule, and since it’s the NHL, it’s often bad judgment.

It’s hard to say whether or not that contact could’ve been avoided, but it did prevent Fleury from being in position to make the second save. The trailing ref was calling it off as the ref up front was calling it a goal.

I’m wondering about Backlund’s pads: too tight or new? Seem hard as puck hits them and ricochets hard; If soft, those shots can die.

via Panotch

I’ve kind of noticed that, too. Especially on the second goal, I think.

by Ben Feldman on Mar 27, 2010 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

Just got back from a game, saw the last 5 minutes of the period. Anyone interested in summing things up for me a little bit?

The Asham goal is already up on NHL.con highlight, so I’ve got the first minute of the game covered. How’s Backe looked?

by Snevik on Mar 27, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

He’s looked good. He’s made a couple of good saves, let out a couple of big rebounds. The first goal was sort of a result of that, but it was a good skate save to begin with and Kunitz was in the right place at the right time. The second goal was thanks to a Crosby shot from the high slot that he stopped with his pad just outside the crease and the rebound went out a bit to the far side where it was a fairly easy goal (wasn’t Crosby’s goal; don’t remember who was with him on the 2-on-2).

by Ben Feldman on Mar 27, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Hard to blame him much for either, though. Really good showing from him so far, I think.

by KreiderDesigns on Mar 27, 2010 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Backe has looked pretty good. He’s kicking out rebounds, two of said rebounds lead to the two Pens goals but he looks good. We’re getting effed by the ref crew again, two goalie interference penalties that were questionable and one goal (Gagne’s) waived off after a minute of deliberation b/c Leino hit Fleury outside the crease, it was ruled incidental contact and thus no goal, but no penalty. It was ll bullshit, not long after was when Pens scored their second goal, of course.

We looked pretty decent in the second, had a powerplay but no big chance.

Let’s talk about the fact there hasn’t been a single game this year where we’ve said, afterwards, “the officiating hurt the Flyers tonight, but they managed to fight through it.” I feel like we used to say that in pre-lockout years. that gagne goal was a game breaker. cooke baltently holding parent’s stick leading to a goal. hartnell getting a penalty for being checked by crosby. jvr’s BS call leading to the pens first goal. the list goes on.

if you say the flyers have no heart, read the above paragraph. i’ve been in games like this. it sucks knowing that no matter what you do, you are not allowed to win.

we are getting collossally fisted on a daily basis and the league just doesn’t give a damn.
