Back in January, I stumbled upon a few photos of Johan Backlund's goalie mask. Adorned in Flyers colors and Flyers logos, the angle I took for the story I wrote about his mask was that he had 'high hopes' for making the Flyers roster. Those hopes were evident in the probably-expensive piece of artwork he put on his head each night with the Phantoms.
I also mentioned how Backlund playing with the Flyers this season was pretty unlikely, given the fact that the goalie wasn't even trusted to be a backup behind Brian Boucher once Ray Emery went down. Paul Holmgren made that clear when he picked Michael Leighton off of waivers.
So it's a nice way to sum up this season, perhaps, in that there are eight games left in the season, Backlund is getting his first NHL start today against our cross-state rivals, and most of us are actually pretty happy with this occurrence. We haven't been winning with Boosh in goal, whether that's his fault or not, and the team really doesn't have much else to lose at this point.
It's Backlund's net today. He's kept a weak Phantoms team alive in the AHL all season long. Let's see if he can keep this Flyers team above the playoff bubble.
Good lineup news out of Pitt today: Evgeni Malkin will miss his third game in a row. Sergei Gonchar is sick and may miss the game as well. Matt Carle is a game-time decision for the Flyers.
Pittsburgh clinches a playoff spot with a point today. Don't let it happen. This could be the Flyers last ever game at Civic Mellon Arena. Let's win it.
After the jump, lines, goalies, and questions to answer.
Flyers Line Combinations
Hartnell – Richards – Carcillo
Gagne – Briere – Leino
van Riemsdyk – Giroux – Powe
Laperriere – Betts – Asham
Pronger - Coburn
Timonen - Krajicek

Late word: Carle is out.

Questions to Answer
- Martin Havlat, after the Wild game: "Once they got the lead, they gave up." Does the motivation of playing the Penguins translate into [enter Flyers' marketing slogan here] hockey?
- How's Backlund look?
- How much does missing Malkin hurt the Pens today? Same goes for Gonchar, if he is indeed out.
- Can the Flyers win their last regular season game at Mellon Arena?

Bob?
I think a better joke would be: His mask says his nickname is “Backe”, but I’d much prefer we call him “Bernie.” It rhymes and reminds you of the best goalie ever.

Maybe for once our unnamed goalie can make the other team look silly and “pitch” a shutout? You know, what the Flyers seem to allow every other unnamed goalie to do to them.
If people called Niitty Frank for Frank Nitti, I think we can call Backlund Bob for Bob Backlund.

one hit them I believe. I really wanted KK to win the job but I think it was always Moyers to lose more so Kendricks to win.
well one good thing about it, as much as I’d prefer KK, is that holding him back will delay attribitration..Actually Moyer’s curve look pretty tight.. Still i’d feel better about it if he could some have some knuckleball instructions downloaded a la the Matrix.
I agree, I am surprised he has not tried to develop a knuckler but I guess at this point he doesn’t think it’s worth it.
yeah there has been alot of guys who included a knuckleball in the junk arsenals but weren’t knuckerballers per se. One thing I’d like to do is see Tim Wakefield pitch…do we platy the Sox this year or are we headed west for interleague?

Even though he was out of the crease, he was still impeded from making the save. That was just a shitshow all around. Apparently, the trailing ref made the call, despite the other ref calling it a goal. If I were a Flyers fan, I would be pissed too.
It should’ve been goalie interference. Since that call was missed, the goal should’ve counted.
Bull, he’s looking to make a play on the puck and Flowerchild was out of his crease where he’s fair game for accidental contact. That was just complete bull.

The goalie isn’t fair game when he is out of the crease. If the goalie has his position set first, even if he is out of the crease, it is goalie interference.

Well I appreciate your honesty and I agree. There should have been a goalie interference call. But when you say over the PA that it’s incidental contact, that means that you basically pretend like nothing happened and the play ended as is. Except they pretended like nothing happened and then changed the call which is contradictory and makes no friggin sense.
Absolutely.

Maybe I just can't let things go but,
I guess it’s ok for Crosby to go in feet first on a goalie and knock the puck in off his hand, that’s not interference or anything…
He was 2 feet out of the damn crease. Maybe on the next play, Fluery can just follow the Pens up ice and grab himself a goal since apparently no one is allowed to touch him.
I think when the goalie leaves that blue area (crease) he is on his own…no refs to save him if he gets bowled over….inside sure, that is HIS area, the rest of the ice is fair game, which Fleury was in both times. Bad calls

HERE’S the correct rule. Number 69.
Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.
Broad Street Hockey - SBN's Philadelphia Flyers blog. Got goaltending? Searching since 1987.
There is a lot of judgment in that rule, and since it’s the NHL, it’s often bad judgment.
It’s hard to say whether or not that contact could’ve been avoided, but it did prevent Fleury from being in position to make the second save. The trailing ref was calling it off as the ref up front was calling it a goal.
As always, too much gray area.

Backlund’s positioning was a little bit scary there. Left too much open far side, but it seemed to be on purpose so he’d have the glove right where he wanted it to be.

Anyone else pissed that we always try to make a pass into the slot, but there is never anybody there. Ever.
YES! we force certain plays far too often. Mix it up a bit. Like they been playing NHL 10 for too long thinking the only way to score is the crease pass.

I was at that game where Delmore got that hat-trick. That was an awesome game.
"Good night. Good hockey."
Just got back from a game, saw the last 5 minutes of the period. Anyone interested in summing things up for me a little bit?
The Asham goal is already up on NHL.con highlight, so I’ve got the first minute of the game covered. How’s Backe looked?
He’s looked good. He’s made a couple of good saves, let out a couple of big rebounds. The first goal was sort of a result of that, but it was a good skate save to begin with and Kunitz was in the right place at the right time. The second goal was thanks to a Crosby shot from the high slot that he stopped with his pad just outside the crease and the rebound went out a bit to the far side where it was a fairly easy goal (wasn’t Crosby’s goal; don’t remember who was with him on the 2-on-2).
Dupuis scored the second

Backe has looked pretty good. He’s kicking out rebounds, two of said rebounds lead to the two Pens goals but he looks good. We’re getting effed by the ref crew again, two goalie interference penalties that were questionable and one goal (Gagne’s) waived off after a minute of deliberation b/c Leino hit Fleury outside the crease, it was ruled incidental contact and thus no goal, but no penalty. It was ll bullshit, not long after was when Pens scored their second goal, of course.
We looked pretty decent in the second, had a powerplay but no big chance.

I am assuming Backlund pulled something? Any word on why Boucher is in?
As a Pens fan, I have to say that I am happy Boucher is in. Backlund was looking solid.
Between periods:
Boucher: Hey Backes, would you like some of this delicious Gatorade?
Backes: Thanks, buddy. (Downs whole bottle) This is odd, I don’t think I’ve ever had this flavor before.
Boucher: It’s new. It’s called Mt. Cyanide. Bwwaahahahahahahahahhaha
This concludes my presentation of Flyerpeice Theatre.

A penguins commentator. I guess it’s ok if your score and don’t get caught for a penalty, that’s just being competitive. I just don’t understand this.
I honestly want to see a fight. I want to see Lappy or preferablly Carbomb DESTROY someone in a pens jersey…at this point I don’t even care if it’s a fan. In fact, I think I’d prefer it.

Sorry about the mess up…..
Anyways, after the Flyers picked up Pronger, I felt they were the team to beat in the East. I picked them against the Canucks for the SCF matchup. I just wanted to get Flyers fans reasons for the Flyers play this year.
Too many people taking steps back (Coburn)?
Leadership (Richards)?
Goaltending?
Just wondering what the reasons are for the Flyers inconsistency this year.
immaturity, lack of heart
"Sugah n' rainbows"
"We will steal the show, jolly Rogers go, we are wolves of the sea."
I thought the Flyers were going to be able to ride their 20 goal scorers and Pronger’s 30 mins a game straight to the SCF.
Sometimes I have seen the Flyers play this year, it’s almost like they don’t care. Are they trying to get the GM fired?
I just think they would rather have a fun time after the game. The treat their job as secondary, they dont hustle, etc. Hell, even Lavy gave up on this team by the way his coaching changed over the season. Then the canceling practice after a terrible loss to go bowling didnt help his case either.

What are you talking about? He’s the greatest player in the world, in any sport, he could have split his atoms, assigned half of them to holding the net in place and with the other half put the puck in the net after dangling it around the back checking Flyers. He’s the greatest of all time.

The Flyers need to give honest exit interviews and say what the hell is going on in the locker room. And whoever is causing problems for the team needs to be shipped the hell out of town.

Well guys, I picked a nice game to start commenting on.
Long time lurker, first time poster.
I think my Giroux jersey is a curse, we haven’t won since I started wearing it. I took it off for a little while on the Minn. game and we scored 2 goals….
I swear I killed this team. I met Travis, Geoff and Ben at the Boston game a while ago and it’s been all down hill from there. I’M SORRY!

The officiating was bad.
And we lost the game by three goals. There are no "extenuating circumstances for losses. We are in eighth, and we aren’t playing well enough to win games.
Yeah make no mistake, the refs were absolutely awful, worst I have seen in a long time but they were not the reason we lost this game. Though I do think Gagne’s disallowed goal was a possible turning point.
It was the Toyota Turning Point of the game.

Let’s talk about the fact there hasn’t been a single game this year where we’ve said, afterwards, “the officiating hurt the Flyers tonight, but they managed to fight through it.” I feel like we used to say that in pre-lockout years. Maybe it’s parity, or maybe it’s this crop of players. I don’t know.
On a more positive note, I’ve got tickets to the Flyers / Red Wings game next sunday!
Maybe the Flyers will realize they need to fight a playoff spot before then.
im going tomorrow and it’s fan appreication night. a win would be some really welcome appreciation.

it is absolutely staggering and sickening that officials seem to be doing this to the flyers almost every game now.
that gagne goal was a game breaker. cooke baltently holding parent’s stick leading to a goal. hartnell getting a penalty for being checked by crosby. jvr’s BS call leading to the pens first goal. the list goes on.
if you say the flyers have no heart, read the above paragraph. i’ve been in games like this. it sucks knowing that no matter what you do, you are not allowed to win.
we are getting collossally fisted on a daily basis and the league just doesn’t give a damn.
