Vokoun for Carter? Thoughts?

by LegionofDoom on Mar 3, 2010 10:22 AM EST reply actions

NO!

tpanotch:

Flyers will NOT move Carter I am told

by Mitchell Green on Mar 3, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

I for it!
We need to address the situation sooner or later
Vokoun is the best option that going to be available for a while

by Prometheus74 on Mar 3, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

And while he has been good for us this year, I really don’t see Michael Leighton as our long-term goalie solution.

It should be discussed as a very possible option. Not straight up but I need to know what else is involved.

by MJDII on Mar 3, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with SanFilippo: If Florida drops asking price to Hartnell + Boosh (probably have to upgrade that option, then waive Bouch… try Parent?), I’m in.

Don’t get me wrong, I would not mind trading Hartnell at all, but has there been any indication whatsoever that he’ll waive his NTC? It seems like he’s fairly entrenched in the city and with this group of guys.

by Derek F on Mar 3, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

This I could support. Of course Hartnell will have to waive his NTC.

by LegionofDoom on Mar 3, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

You folks need goaltending more than scoring. I think the deal is a fair one myself.

True, no income tax. 6% state sales tax. About a 2-2.5% property tax depending on location in Broward County.

Sorry, yeah, I meant income tax.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I figured that was what you meant. It comes up during free agency for every sport whenever Florida teams try to lure players from other parts of the country.

Yeah. I mean, then you just buy everything online (as I do anyway) and you’re out of the sales tax.

And I don’t think the property tax could be any worse than owning in Philadelphia, you know?

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Plus its Florida! No offense to Philly

by MJDII on Mar 3, 2010 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

Theoretically, it’s Miami. Which is way better than anywhere else in Florida.

South Beach Baby!

by MJDII on Mar 3, 2010 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah – three months where the average temperature is over 90 degrees, five more months where it’s in the 80s. Average of 59.2 inches of precipitation per year (Philly averages 50.2). Something like 30% of the population doesn’t speak English at home. The state bird is the mosquito. Sawgrass, saw palm, alligators, brain-eating amoebas (I kid you not), bear, panther, poisonous plants…it’s a freakin’ paradise down here, man.

It’s not that bad, but it ain’t all Disney World and popsicles either.

Sawgrass, saw palm, alligators, brain-eating amoebas (I kid you not), bear, panther, poisonous plants

None of that is in Miami.

No, that’s the hotels with barbed-wire fences and cockroaches the size of small dogs. If you’re filthy stinking rich, Miami’s a nice place. If you’re only making Dan Carcillo money, it’s not so nice.

Jeff Carter on the other hand…..I would be a little more hesitant.

With a 2nd or 1st coming back, I’d sign that paperwork in a heartbeat. Straight up, I’d hesitate, but probably pull the trigger.

I think it’s possible because Florida has trouble affording Vokoun and may be willing to go with Clemenson.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, throw in the pick and despite not wanting to lose Carter, Vokoun would be a huge upgrade

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 3, 2010 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

I think the Flyers are getting fleeced without a pick, but much better address the needs of their franchise.

However, before I make that trade, I’d put Carter on the open market and you might get a much better return.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

Definitely have to put it out there that Carter is available to see if anyone insults you.

I’d rather have Crosby and Fleury for Carter.

Horton is signed through 2013, he’s part of their rebuilding process.

by Mitchell Green on Mar 3, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

There should be no trading of Richards, Carter, JVR, or Giroux. Leighton has done nothing to suggest we need to replace him. If we traded Carter for Vokoun I’d be extremely upset, even with a pick coming back. Carter is an elite young scorer, one of the fastest players in the league, with one of the hardest shots in the league. Vokoun would be with us for two years and though he’s been elite at times in his career, I think that shakes up the team and hurts our future way too much.

by Derek F on Mar 3, 2010 10:30 AM EST reply actions

It is a start. You have to start because on this roster it = No Stanley

by MJDII on Mar 3, 2010 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

current flyers roster = first round loss

roster-carter+vokoun&picks = possible ECF, IMO and at least something to build on for the future

Since you haven’t noticed, Carter’s contract ends the same day Vokoun’s does.

He’s an RFA that we’d re-sign immediately.

by Derek F on Mar 3, 2010 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

Like Boston did with Phil Kessel last summer?

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

he is RFA and Gagne’s contract ends that day as well so resigning Carter is easy with Gagne’s money however Carter’s career ends about 8 years after Vokoun’s

As I said on the radio show, he could right now be a decent third-line checker and PKer. Change the expectation of “scorer” to “defensively responsible two-way forward”, and he’s something. Probably on par with Powe right now, actually. Just not as much energy.

True. There’s at least three different regions to Florida, and probably four – South, Central, and Panhandle are all radically different from each other, and I’d argue that the rural areas (true rural, not the suburbs or near-urban areas) are a different culture too. None of the regions really seem to share much culturally.

by Ben Rothenberg on Mar 3, 2010 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t be upset with standing pat – but we might as well add a piece somewhere since we cleared the salary for it, whether it’s an insurance goalie, a solid 3rd pair vet d-man, or another winger.

by Derek F on Mar 3, 2010 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree.

If thats your feeling, then you have to start selling players. The worst thing the Flyers can do is stand pat. They HAVE to improve. I want them to improve the future, not the present, but I’m resigned to the fact that this won’t happen. But they can’t allow this opportunity to pass by without making any improvements to the franchise.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

That is never going to happen, we both know that. I was talking about the 2 realistic trade scenarios.

A. We give up way to much for an overrated rental player.

B. We stand pat, don’t do anything stupid and try to address these issues during the off-season.

by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Mar 3, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I think I’d rather improve now than stand pat. At least I’d know Holmgren does in fact realize the deficiencies of his team.

And its not like they can even give up the future at the deadline today, anyhow.

Nabokov is a UFA this summer and Vokoun can fit under the cap without trading Cater and we can always threaten to assign Hartnell to the Phantoms if he doesn’t waive his NTC giving us a bit of the upper hand

Have you caught his act between the playoffs and Olympics?

by MJDII on Mar 3, 2010 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

like I been saying forever there are 3 goalies in the league that are sure things Lundquist, Miller and maybe Broudeur (his olympics wasn’t stellar either) other than it is all who is HOT and who is NOT

by MJDII on Mar 3, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

exactly if the best goalie always wins than Broduer would have had a lot more than 3 rings in his career and Hasek would have grabbed some too when he was on Buffalo

If he goes on waivers, yes he could be claimed.

You’re question is whether a player with an NTC can be put on waivers. And the answer is yes.

Only NMCs can’t be put on waiver

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

I remembered it saying something in there, which is why I checked. It only talks about whether or not the new club is bound by the NTC after they retrieve the player, so yes they can be waived and claimed.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 3, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

I’m reading through that section, and think I found another oddity – if a player has a no movement clause, but voluntarily agrees to be loaned to an AHL team, they cannot be claimed off waivers, because they cannot involuntarily be moved. I have trouble thinking of a way that could feasibly happen, but it struck me as unusual.

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 3, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

I like hartnell a lot. I don’t think Florida would want Gagne as much as they’d want Hartnell.

It would solve a present day problem and also create a lot of cap flexibility since Carle is signed through 2012 and Hartnell is signed through 2013.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Let me rephrase: That trade would be the closest we’ll get today to blowing up the team currently assembled.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

I am onboard with that and we gain another 2 million in cap space give up close to 5 million to add a winger

by chrislanci on Mar 3, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

i’m not convinced that a rebuilding team would take on that much salary for two underachieving players but maybe homer could use a jedi mind trick to pull it off

by 88Flyers on Mar 3, 2010 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Matt Carle is having the best year of his career. Hartnell is an established 30 goal scorer signed for four more seasons. Neither would be “underachieving players”

Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.

by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 3, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t understand.

Remember last year JVR signed a try-out contract for the rest of the season, and a contract that began this year? I think its the same thing without the try-out.

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

CapGeek has a list of all the players signed to a contract here, and the “slide-rule” applies to the three players in Juniors (Wellwood, Rinaldo, Hostetter) – they only count against the 50 if they are 18 or 19 when signed and play more than 11 games in the NHL this year.

My assumption is that last year, JVR didn’t sign an NHL contract and therefore did not count against the 50. But if he did, then my previous comment is this: I’m assuming those players signed recently are signed beginning in 10-11, and the 50 limit only counts those with NHL contracts for the current season.

I don’t think that it does. That was something I wasn’t sure of: Whether the contract limit only counted this year, or all NHL contracts the team has signed. Apparently, it’s only the NHL contracts for this season.

Why is it that you have to argue with anyone with a differing view? All the stuff he’s posted I’ve read before or almost at the exact same as I’ve viewed it somewhere else. You have to agree with objective facts.

Sure, but if that next contract isn’t coming for 2 or 3 years (more for some) it won’t matter what’s happens over the last 20 games of a season your management has already given up on.

by Pondhockey on Mar 3, 2010 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

Then you’ll get branded a slacker and that next payday will not come. Or you get shuffled from place to place, year after year. There is a reason why some guys who aren’t the best players are considered great pick ups. Lappy for example.

And seeing as the Flyers have 7 guys in contract years with 4 RFA, who I’m pretty sure are pretty much guaranteed a certain pay raise. So basically you only have 3 players playing for contracts next year. Gonna need more then 3 players caring, plus if that’s the only reason they care it most likely won’t matter anyway.

True. But I only gave 1 reason why they should play like they care.

he ll be back next year… and hes one of the few flyers that play with heart

by 19FLYERS67 on Mar 3, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

by EREX21 on Mar 3, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

by MarioD on Mar 3, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

hes a restricted free agent. asham is an ufa. they wont let both of them go and it makes more sense to keep carcillo over asham.
