I agree with SanFilippo: If Florida drops asking price to Hartnell + Boosh (probably have to upgrade that option, then waive Bouch… try Parent?), I’m in.

True, no income tax. 6% state sales tax. About a 2-2.5% property tax depending on location in Broward County.

Yeah, I figured that was what you meant. It comes up during free agency for every sport whenever Florida teams try to lure players from other parts of the country.
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is

Yeah. I mean, then you just buy everything online (as I do anyway) and you’re out of the sales tax.
And I don’t think the property tax could be any worse than owning in Philadelphia, you know?
Yeah – three months where the average temperature is over 90 degrees, five more months where it’s in the 80s. Average of 59.2 inches of precipitation per year (Philly averages 50.2). Something like 30% of the population doesn’t speak English at home. The state bird is the mosquito. Sawgrass, saw palm, alligators, brain-eating amoebas (I kid you not), bear, panther, poisonous plants…it’s a freakin’ paradise down here, man.
It’s not that bad, but it ain’t all Disney World and popsicles either.

None of that is in Miami.
No, that’s the hotels with barbed-wire fences and cockroaches the size of small dogs. If you’re filthy stinking rich, Miami’s a nice place. If you’re only making Dan Carcillo money, it’s not so nice.

I’ll be giddy if we can shop Hartnell for a bag of bucks. Throw in a world-class goalie along with it and I’ll dance the night away.
Jeff Carter on the other hand…..I would be a little more hesitant.

With a 2nd or 1st coming back, I’d sign that paperwork in a heartbeat. Straight up, I’d hesitate, but probably pull the trigger.
I think it’s possible because Florida has trouble affording Vokoun and may be willing to go with Clemenson.
I agree, throw in the pick and despite not wanting to lose Carter, Vokoun would be a huge upgrade

I think the Flyers are getting fleeced without a pick, but much better address the needs of their franchise.
However, before I make that trade, I’d put Carter on the open market and you might get a much better return.
so what are you thinking he might fetch on the open market?

I don’t think that’s enough at all.
Generally, I disagree with SanFilippo’s assumption that Boucher has value. I’m resigned to having to waive him. (Plus, he’d make a great backup for next year)

by Mitchell Green on Mar 3, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions
There should be no trading of Richards, Carter, JVR, or Giroux. Leighton has done nothing to suggest we need to replace him. If we traded Carter for Vokoun I’d be extremely upset, even with a pick coming back. Carter is an elite young scorer, one of the fastest players in the league, with one of the hardest shots in the league. Vokoun would be with us for two years and though he’s been elite at times in his career, I think that shakes up the team and hurts our future way too much.
current flyers roster = first round loss
roster-carter+vokoun&picks = possible ECF, IMO and at least something to build on for the future

Soured on him that much? That kid has some potential, if the ‘Yotes are willing to dump him for AHLers I’d be all over that.
I am. Everything I’ve heard (mostly from PHX people coming over here) plus the numbers tell me the kid is broken. I want no part of somebody who’s that fragile – both physically and mentally.
But! If it was Rob Bellamy or Matt Clackson or Garret Klotz, I’d swing that deal in a second.

As I said on the radio show, he could right now be a decent third-line checker and PKer. Change the expectation of “scorer” to “defensively responsible two-way forward”, and he’s something. Probably on par with Powe right now, actually. Just not as much energy.

Well, I disagree that the other three can’t play, but you could conceivably do it:
JVR-Carter-Briere
Carcillo-Richards-Asham
Leino-Giroux-Powe
Pyorala-Betts-Laperriere
Now, the weaknesses are on the RW (Asham, Powe) and not the left.

True. There’s at least three different regions to Florida, and probably four – South, Central, and Panhandle are all radically different from each other, and I’d argue that the rural areas (true rural, not the suburbs or near-urban areas) are a different culture too. None of the regions really seem to share much culturally.

I disagree.
If thats your feeling, then you have to start selling players. The worst thing the Flyers can do is stand pat. They HAVE to improve. I want them to improve the future, not the present, but I’m resigned to the fact that this won’t happen. But they can’t allow this opportunity to pass by without making any improvements to the franchise.
That is never going to happen, we both know that. I was talking about the 2 realistic trade scenarios.
A. We give up way to much for an overrated rental player.
B. We stand pat, don’t do anything stupid and try to address these issues during the off-season.
by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Mar 3, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions
Nabokov is a UFA this summer and Vokoun can fit under the cap without trading Cater and we can always threaten to assign Hartnell to the Phantoms if he doesn’t waive his NTC giving us a bit of the upper hand
like I been saying forever there are 3 goalies in the league that are sure things Lundquist, Miller and maybe Broudeur (his olympics wasn’t stellar either) other than it is all who is HOT and who is NOT
exactly if the best goalie always wins than Broduer would have had a lot more than 3 rings in his career and Hasek would have grabbed some too when he was on Buffalo
Lindbergh? Hextall?
Granted that’s basically about it, but we’ve still had some.

Hypothetical
If we put someone on out team that had a NTC on Wavers ….say Hartnell could someone pick him up?
Yes, but some players have no-movement clauses which means that can’t be put on waivers.
Briere and Timonen fit under that category, Hartnell and Gagne just have NTC.

I remembered it saying something in there, which is why I checked. It only talks about whether or not the new club is bound by the NTC after they retrieve the player, so yes they can be waived and claimed.

I’m reading through that section, and think I found another oddity – if a player has a no movement clause, but voluntarily agrees to be loaned to an AHL team, they cannot be claimed off waivers, because they cannot involuntarily be moved. I have trouble thinking of a way that could feasibly happen, but it struck me as unusual.

I like hartnell a lot. I don’t think Florida would want Gagne as much as they’d want Hartnell.
It would solve a present day problem and also create a lot of cap flexibility since Carle is signed through 2012 and Hartnell is signed through 2013.
I am onboard with that and we gain another 2 million in cap space give up close to 5 million to add a winger
i’m not convinced that a rebuilding team would take on that much salary for two underachieving players but maybe homer could use a jedi mind trick to pull it off
Flyers D-man Matt Carle and and TB goalie Mike Smith are a few names being shopped but getting little attention.

Source tells me the Flyers/Roloson talks are still preliminary.
Had a source just talk to Dwayne Roloson right now, who said he “hasn’t heard anything” and “doesn’t know what to expect.”
Though he did relay someone else saying it would happen:
RT @BDGallof: 95% chance Roloson gets moved per Isles source.
He said he thought Hamhuis wouldn’t be moved until the last moment as Poile tried to up the return, but did say he thought something was close with Nashville.

Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 3, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t understand.
Remember last year JVR signed a try-out contract for the rest of the season, and a contract that began this year? I think its the same thing without the try-out.
CapGeek has a list of all the players signed to a contract here, and the “slide-rule” applies to the three players in Juniors (Wellwood, Rinaldo, Hostetter) – they only count against the 50 if they are 18 or 19 when signed and play more than 11 games in the NHL this year.
My assumption is that last year, JVR didn’t sign an NHL contract and therefore did not count against the 50. But if he did, then my previous comment is this: I’m assuming those players signed recently are signed beginning in 10-11, and the 50 limit only counts those with NHL contracts for the current season.

JVR signed a 2009-10 contract, and was on a tryout for his games with the Phantoms last year.
I guess I’m confused as to why signing a contract for the 2010-11 season would count in 2009-10?

I don’t think that it does. That was something I wasn’t sure of: Whether the contract limit only counted this year, or all NHL contracts the team has signed. Apparently, it’s only the NHL contracts for this season.

You’ve gotta get Baicker out of that feed on this page. She’s fucking awful. Hasn’t reported a single thing all day, just chatting with other retards on twitter and passing along the actual reporting being done by her colleagues.
She is not reporting anything because there has hardly anything to report for the Flyers. What has Homer done of note? Wake up? Order a martini?
In all seriousness, when she does report, her reporting is very accurate.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
Tpanotch is just as bad with his taco stories and flight schedule. Did you guys realize that not having draft picks is hurting us?
I disagree. And I know this because Baicker has reposted all of Pannaccio’s news along as the only hockey related things she’s written all day.
All from today:
And in case you are wondering the #Flyers have NOT asked Gagne to waive his no-trade. Could be scaling back what they want to do
Flyers will NOT move Carter I am told
Source in fla says they want carter for vokoun. Vokoun would waive NTC for flyers
Pole still shopping Hamhuis but flyers still in iT
Flyers’ source going into this morning’s trade deadline: “We don’t know what to expect because there’s been so much talk,” nothing more.
Why is it that you have to argue with anyone with a differing view? All the stuff he’s posted I’ve read before or almost at the exact same as I’ve viewed it somewhere else. And he has more pointless tweets then meaningful. I personally don’t like him, is that ok with you? Or does everyone always have to agree with your opinions?
You have to agree with objective facts.
And the fact is he’s spoken to people all day and posted news worthy info many times. Even if it was just reiterating that a position hasn’t changed, its news.
Really you just amaze me sometimes. Your actually trying to tell me I have to like him because of your “objective facts”. Wether I find him interesting or worthy of following has nothing to do with objective facts. It’s an opinion and I’m free to have whatever opinion I want regardless of what you think.
I’m telling you are wrong to say
it’s not like we’ve learned anything from his dribble really either.
because, objectively, we have learned quite a bit from him today.
Wow, you just don’t stop do you. Fine I miss spoke, it’s not like I’ve learned anything from his dribble today. Now just shut up for once and move on from something that isn’t even important.

Sticking with a one and done team was the worst thing they could do.
Sell what though? Doesn’t the lack of notable moves indicate that it was a lukewarm sellers market at best?
yeah I do and you don’t get it that if you were in the locker room on a team that was in playoff position that sold at the deadline your fucking head would explode and you would have a mutiny on your hands
good luck explaining to Pronger who signed here that we just dumped our leading scoring for draft picks good luck explaining to Lappy that you blocked a shot with your teeth to get us two points that we don’t care about since we are throwing this season away that would real well

Because you get contract money depending on your performance?
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
You have to at least show you are worth the money you’re getting. Most times anyway…
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
Nope, this isn’t the NFL, can’t just cut and run. They can waive you if they want, but I’m pretty sure you’ll still be getting paid.
I have no idea where your comment came from. If you do not show your are worth the money, you don’t get a contract for that kind of money. In general anyway. (Ignore Lupul and the man behind the curtain!)
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
If your already on the team, you already have a contract. I believe the conversation started over the current Flyers in the locker room.
Yeah… you asked why should they play like they cared. I responded… For a bigger paycheck. These guys are young enough that another contract will come soon. At the least, you play for more zeros on your contract.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
Sure, but if that next contract isn’t coming for 2 or 3 years (more for some) it won’t matter what’s happens over the last 20 games of a season your management has already given up on.
Then you’ll get branded a slacker and that next payday will not come. Or you get shuffled from place to place, year after year. There is a reason why some guys who aren’t the best players are considered great pick ups. Lappy for example.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
And seeing as the Flyers have 7 guys in contract years with 4 RFA, who I’m pretty sure are pretty much guaranteed a certain pay raise. So basically you only have 3 players playing for contracts next year. Gonna need more then 3 players caring, plus if that’s the only reason they care it most likely won’t matter anyway.
but getting bitch slapped in the playoffs two years in a row by your hated rival is ok as long as there isn’t a mutiny? These are professional athletes. Their job is to play with whoever is put around them. Just like those of us with jobs have to work with people that are put around us. May not always like it but thats the way it works.
Close, but they did not win. So, the team, for whatever reason, needs to be adjusted to be able to play at a level to beat them. The players understand this and the realities of the salary cap era.

I read all 700 comments hoping that by the end the Flyers would have done something and all I learnt was that 95% of Twitterers add nothing to the world

At least you probably got stuff done and did not waste the better part of 6 or 7 hours following this for nothing.

“I still believe that once you get into the playoffs,” Holmgren said, “anything can happen.” That kind of thinking is why we have not won a Stanley Cup in 35 years. Thanks for all the fun fellas. Chat a little tonight.
He’s right. Anything could happen.
Of course, his job is improve the Flyers’ chances from “realm of possible outcomes” to “most likely outcome”.
I agree 100%. Once you are in the playoffs, anything can happen. Anyone or any team can get hot at the just right time and walk away with Lord Stanley’s Cup.
That being said, it is Holmgren’s job to improve the Flyers chances and that is something he has constantly failed miserably at.
