Get Florida reaction at Litter Box Cats

YAAAAWN. That's the general reaction to today's deadline which saw the Flyers abstain from making a move. Good or bad, these are the guys expected to bring the Cup back to Philadelphia.
But enough about the trading deadline: there is a hockey game tonight after all. Tonight, the Flyers take their five-game winning streak into Sunrise to face the Panthers. Aside from the Flyers winning streak, the next two biggest stories are the Flyers playing against the goalie a lot of people wanted and David Booth's first game against the Flyers since being concussed by Mike Richards.
In anticipation of Booth's return against the Flyers, the Sun-Sentinel asked how he feels to share the ice with Richards again:
"We’ve got to get two points, that’s the bottom line. …But it’ll be an interesting game, sure. "
I asked him if he would try to return the favor from October with a big hit or if he would challenge Richards to a fight.
Booth responded: "I’m just going to play my game. I have to get back to playing physical. You see that in the Olympics. Everyone’s finishing their hits, everyone’s winning battles and that’s something I’ve got to get back to. I can’t get sidetracked with the other things."
So that's that. Fairly typical answer, essentially nothing to see here, move along.
As far as Tomas Vokoun goes, it will be interesting to see how he plays after offering to waive his no-trade clause for a select few teams. Assuming Philadelphia was one of those teams, he will likely want to impress by showing he was worth whatever offer Paul Holmgren refused.
By beating Booth and Vokoun tonight, the Flyers can tie the season series at two games apiece.
After the jump, Projected Lineups, Expected Starting Goaltenders, Questions to Answer, and our in-game discussion thread.
Flyers Line Combinations
Gagne - Richards - Carcillo
Hartnell - Carter - Briere
JVR - Giroux - Asham
Powe - Betts - Laperriere
Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Krajicek
Parent - Coburn
No expected changes.
Florida Line Combinations
Booth - Weiss - Stillman
Frolik - Reinprecht - Dvorak
Campbell - Matthias - Olesz
Kreps - Moore - Oreskovich
Ballard - McCabe
Kulikov - Allen
Garrison - Ellerby
No idea on the defensive pairings, since Leopold and Seidenberg were traded in the past two days. Ellerby has only played two games this year amassing a whopping 6:55 of total ice time.
Starting Goaltenders
Questions to Answer:
- With the assurances that nobody will be traded (ignoring waiver trades), do the Flyers come out like they did last night?
- There were rumors of a potential deal involving Jeff Carter for Tomas Vokoun: In a ridiculously small one game sample, does Carter prove more valuable?
- The Panthers defense is... significantly weaker than it was on Sunday. Can the Flyers take advantage?
- Nobody got traded or fired today, so can the team best their efforts from last year's game against Calgary (after Upshall was traded) and this year's game against Washington (after Stevens was fired)?

Vokoun robbing Gagne on that powerplay breakaway hurt that 1st period. Would have been great to get the lead, now it’ll be tough to come back from 2 down against Vokoun.
On a side note, I absolutely hate it when they chase a goalie one night and score at will, and then follow the next game with no offense.

Everyone read the Puck Daddy Flyers Trade Deadline report?
Philadelphia Flyers: Lost out on Hamhuis because the asking price was too high, and didn’t improve their team on defense or in goal. Unlike the Chicago Blackhawks, who may be able to still win with their goaltending, the Flyers needed to add a better veteran to the Michael Leighton(notes)/Brian Boucher mix. But to the surprise of no one, the Flyers will enter the postseason with a terrific group of forwards, an impressive defense and a question mark in goal. Just. Like. Every. Other. Year. GRADE: D
Fair call in my opinion.

I really doubt a professional athlete that just had two weeks off is going to suffer from fatigue after one game
It isnt the fatigue it is the recovery from the stretching and the dehydration from sweating out an average of a gallon of water a period wearing the equipment.
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 3, 2010 9:10 PM EST up reply actions
Goalies don’t get to sit down and get off their feet in between 45-60 seconds shifts like skaters do, either. It’s a different kind of fatigue that sets in to the two different types of players, but that doesn’t mean that goalies never need rest.
by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 3, 2010 9:12 PM EST up reply actions
I understand that. I’ve played hockey for over 20 years. I understand during the course of a season you need rest. However, plenty of goalies play 60-70 games a year. I just don’t think he’s fatigued right now after the break and the first two games….
If you played then explaining goaltenders is not required
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 3, 2010 9:19 PM EST up reply actions
I understand what you mean. I’m just thinking it could be mental fatigue, too. Leighton and Boosh could have been the most worried about what was going to happen today, and a goalies with mental fatigue can be a lot worse than a skater with mental fatigue.
by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 3, 2010 9:20 PM EST up reply actions
Fatigue for a goal can be subtle like a for baseball batter….if a goalie has to make 30 saves that’s 30 times your getting dump of adrenaline in order fire those fast twitch muscle…. that neurochemistry has to be restocked…..those levels vary depending on where you are in your training/competition cycle. I am not sayhing your necessarilyh wrong but just generalizing too much. The physiology is more complex. You can feel rested but your perception speed and reaction speed can be affected just enough to make a difference.
I know its not exactly an even comparison but I get fatigue from playing too much in net. I have two 2 hour practices a week, plus two 60 min games on a Sunday.
I’m having a break atm over summer when usually I’d be on the rink the whole way from the end of games to the start. I just couldn’t face putting on the pads for another 3 months straight when I could be doing off ice training.

I normally don’t because I watch the games late and blow through commercials/intermission. However, for the second night in a row, I didn’t realize the game was at 7:30, and thus caught up with about two minutes left in the second. So I popped in.
why do you watch the games late, Work or school or something. JW because you never comment on game threads.
"NO HONOR"

I hate commercials and I hate adds for season tickets.
When the whistle blows, I do a 10 second jump back and a 30 second jump forward and I’m right at the faceoff circle. Intermission is 3 five minute skip forwards and four 30 second jumps and right to the center ice faceoff. I watch the game in about 75 minutes.
I am still laughing about the whole Newsday chick comments from earlier.

I love those who try to break down things like lying. I purposely look people into the eyes and tell them the craziest shit to see if they think im lying or not. The flyers fucked up, but we’d all be killing them if they paid too much for a goaltender whose value is at a current high point, and we could get at the end of the year

How many times do people see a deadline deal and go “Awesome! Yes!”? It’s rare. Trading at the deadline is always rough.
Basically, I agree with you. I would have loved to have swung a deal for Hamhuis or Vokoun, but Parent and Coburn for Hamhuis would have been terrible, and a straight up Carter for Vokoun trade would have been bad too.

Vokoun is 33 years old and playing on a team that’s a joke. You want to trade one of our best players for a guy that no one has expected anything out of, even before his game time in Nashville?

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Mar 3, 2010 9:38 PM EST up reply actions
Expectations don’t mean anything. He’s very good, and if they would have given us a 1st or 2nd round pick, while we threw in a low-level prospect, I would have pulled the trigger. If you’re in “win-now” mode, you take your assets (forwards) and acquire your weaknesses (goalie).
But the Flyers can still go after him in the off-season, when the price comes down.

Its almost the QMJHL. No defense that is why the best goalies come from that league
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 3, 2010 9:47 PM EST up reply actions
I’d rather us go after a goalie that will be with us for awhile, the Halaks, Prices. The late 20 year olds that we will pay top dollar for, but who also has top talent. Not paying top price for talent that despite being good is near their end.
I don’t believe in winning now, I believe in winning in general. Pronger will grow old, but we had a similar situation to Hatcher. Don’t go all out because you believe you will be trash in the future. Play to win, in general. That’s why the Phillies are still doing well

Should have offered Carter for Halak and Plachenek. After this year Halak will be too expensive for our cap.
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 3, 2010 9:51 PM EST up reply actions
At the time, that would have been over-paying.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.

If neither resigned that would have equaled cap room and rights to halak for at least picks
by M from Pdaddy on Mar 3, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions
But Carter is an RFA too, and will likely command more money, thus better/more picks.
Basically, Halak was a backup goalie who hadn’t proven what he has so far this year, and Plekanec was coming off a pretty bad season himself. Coupled with Carter’s career year, most people would have hated that trade at the time, rightfully so.
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 3, 2010 10:01 PM EST up reply actions
That’s very true. I’m a huge fan of Halak, but now that he’s going to be more expensive than Price (assuming, of course), I’m good with Price too. Problem is, they’re RFAs. So any trade for them at the deadline will probably require draft picks going back and…well… you know.

yes, the same picks we traded to acquire that aging talent because we were in a win now mentality. Do you see what Im getting at? When you put yourself into a win now mentality, you severely handicap your team. Think Oates, Amonte

haha, I see what you’re saying and I agree. Although I do think acquiring Pronger was a good idea, three 1sts and Lupul was a tad steep. Lupul, Sbisa, and a 1st wouldn’t have been too bad.

Florida announcers actually said they were surprised and thankful the Flyers turned down the Vokoun deal, and also happy that they did. They don’t particularly like Carter… Lindsay (Bill) went as far as saying, Carter has a great “shot” but Vokoun is something you build a team around.
If Vokoun weren’t 33, I’d agree. Plus, Florida can’t build a team, let alone around a 33 year old goalie with 100 games left under his contract.

Aww man…I’mI still working on learning the “no vowels for 6 letters” names of non-flyers….Then I’ll tackle the rules for penalities. It’s weird becuse I like advance baseball metrics but I hate the contract thing other than how a win equates to dollars. the contract thing its certainly much easier in baseball that hockey…. but man if see another piece of rosterbation inspired by Jayson Werth future status as a Phillie I’ll barf. I the one thing I can say is watching these young hockey players performing so well is a testament to hockey evolving in the trainging department . They are getting the most out of these guys when the are physiologically the most viable. and for less money. That’s Holy fucking Grail. They aren’t wasting those years in the minor leagues like baseball players do….they could have Navy Seals in the time it takes these guys to get ready. Since when is basebal the fucking decatholon.
haha, I was talking mostly so you can see what the contract situation looks likes in futures years. That link goes straight to the page that shows about 10 years worth of “rosterbation”. It’s a very useful tool, but I understand how it can be overwhelming.

Yup. Just the first game after the trading deadline.
Against a team who traded away arguably it’s best defenseman, who hasn’t garnered a point in 7 games, or scored more than 2 goals in 14 games.
Who’ve only had 4 games where they had more than 40 shots on goal all season…
And who just took the season series 3-1.
Don’t panic.
It’s one game.

Well there is a positive in all of this…at least Emery went down for the year before he signed an extension.
I have restrained from this statement because Holmgren officially reversed course yet. He said he would talk to Emery about an extension in March. Maybe he still will.
Look I don’t particularly think Homer is that great of a GM but if he signed a guy to an extension while he is on LITR for the rest of the year then he would officially be the dumbest human being alive and would be run out of town so fast it still wouldn’t be fast enough.
Leighton has kept us in most of the game he has played. Tonight, he mailed in his performance and lost the game.

I wouldn’t say he “mailed it in” because that would imply “half-assing.” He did not have a good game, though.
Keeo in mind they’re still scraping off the rust from the break. I noticed a difference between Richards/Pronger/Timonen and everyone else.
Look for a better, more cohesive effort on Friday.
