BSH Radio 10: Emery, Boosh, Leighton, Backlund; The goalie carousel spins on
On this week's show, we discuss at great length the complex state of goaltending in the Flyers organization. From Ray Emery to Michael Leighton to Brian Boucher to Johan Backlund and beyond, who will be the backup this week? Who will be the goalie next year? What about next years backup? What about next years AHL goalies? Can Brian Boucher win a round this year in the playoffs?
None of these questions have clear answers, but we try to answer them on this weeks show. Beyond that, what's the deal with the multitude of goaltending prospects that call the Flyers organization home? From Joacim Eriksson to Nic Riopel to Michael Teslak, where will they all be next season and beyond?
It's all goaltending all the time this week on BSH Radio.

We need a challenger for trivia for next week’s show, so if you’re ready for all the glory and prestige that goes along with competing, let us know.

I’m admittedly not the world’s greatest trivia Flyers trivia, but why the heck not. For the glory and prestige of the competition, I’ll be up for the challenge. Trust me, it will be this kind of humility that will be needed to take you down, Ben. ;-)
What do I need to do? Just call in at the time you are taping the episode and go from there?

there’s not much glory to be had! I’m still ashamed of my performance

You just got the wrong questions. With my luck I’ll get a question about who scored the first goal for the Flyers in the 1981-82 season, but if I get 3 questions about Mikael Renberg and the Legion of Doom, I might just stand a chance.

I think you should test that theory. We need a challenger next week…

Ben, I agree with you about Carey Price. Yuck! No way. I feel like it would be Marty Biron all over again i.e. The Flyers saying Price has what it takes to solidify the goalie position, when in reality, he doesn’t.

i’d rather be born nipple-less than have Carey Price the next Flyers goalie. i’m honestly convinced that he’s really Samm Levine (from freaks and geeks) dressed in pads.

This is the kind of attitude that has prevented us from getting a goalie all these years. Carey Price has talent has credentials, 5th overall pick, and has shown flashes of brilliance at the NHL level. Maybe being thrown into the most prestigious position in the sport of hockey the goalie of the Montreal Canadians at 20 years old and being declared the second coming of Ken Dryden didn’t help matters. The large shadows of legends Patrick Roy and Jacques Plante looming over his head was a bit much for him to handle at that age especially after only 12 games in the AHL. Then the Canadians trade Huet and ask a 20 year old kid to carry them to the cup after they win the the Eastern Conference and have their best season in decade. He plays great against the Bruins then as we all know the hated Flyers embrass him in the second round. I still don’t think the Habs fans forgave Price for that playoff series, and the grass is always greener with a slightly older and more experience Halak waiting in the wings. If we get a young goalie you are going to have to stick with him through thick and thin. They are going to be inconsistent what would have happened if the Pens bailed on Fluery after 3 years he stats were much worse than Price through that point and he wasn’t playing under nearly the same pressure. None of the young guys I mean under 25 year old guys are going to blow the doors of Wachovia Center. But with Pronger and Kimmo they will certainly be better than what we have now and hopefully peak at the right time to get us to the promised land and keep us in contention for the cup year after year. That is the risk of getting a young goalie but going after career backups or aging vets hasn’t worked at all for the Flyers at the very least this will be something different. REMEMBER there are no sure things in net especially come playoff time unless you name is Brodeur (who is clearly seen better days), Miller, and maybe Fluery.
I’m not going to read that paragraph. But I am going to agree with you, to an extent.
Price hasn’t been spectacular in any of his years pro. And he’s looked straight up bad last year, and in the playoffs. However, his performance this year has been good. 2.70 and .912 on the Canadiens team would be <2.40 and >.920 on this team, in my opinion.
That isn’t to say there aren’t better options out there; I just wouldn’t assume Cory Schneider and Jonathan Bernier are necessarily better when they haven’t had any real NHL experience. It should (of course) depend on what we have to give up. We don’t have the luxury of limiting our own options.
But Price at 2.77 and .912 can’t be that easily translated simply because of a “bad” Canadiens team. Especially when you see Halak go 2.43 and .923.
At even strength, Halak has a .933 s% to Price’s .921. On the PK, Halak leads .887 to .866. Halak is clearly better than Price, and Halak puts up the numbers in Montreal that you are hoping Price could put up here.
As I said on the show, I’m strictly in the “what would he cost” camp before saying get him or don’t.

Right. But I think Halak is really good, and I think Price is just good (better than Emery, Biron, any other recent fix). For that reason alone, I wouldn’t be unsatisfied if the Flyers said “We’re getting serious about goaltending,” and started next year with Price in net. It would be our most legitimate attempt to sure up the crease since Vanbiesbrouck.
Agreed. I just don’t think you can blame the team in front of him for his poor numbers this year.

one year isn't enough to be good
I am not blaming the team in front of him just a change a scenery and the fact that he is so young I certainly don’t believe he has peaked yet. If these are his worst years as a Pro they are certainly not that bad. Remember Steve Mason that is the risk you take with some of these young guys, last season 0.916 SV PCT 2.29 GAA, this year same team 0.898 SV PCT 3.13 GAA or how about Calder Trophy winner Raycroft or Vezina Trophy Winner Jose Theodore or Fluery went he was starting out young goalies are up and down. Price might be down right now and if this is his low point it is much higher than any of those guys I mentioned. Imagine where he could be when he is in prime.
How could you guys forget Pat Falloon?
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
haha, I definitely shouldn’t have. But I did. I’m still surprised he was on that team. No recollection of that whatsoever.
