Tuesday Morning Fly By: Islanders Game Day, Hartnell Stories, and Goaltending

Today's open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news...

  • Last night's NHL scores... DAL 4 - WAS 3 (SO); LA 6 - CLB 0
  • Yesterday, we called for Brian Boucher to start in net tonight.  He won't.  [On the Fly]
  • Previews of tonight's game against the Islanders: [NHL.com] [CSNPhilly] and check out Lighthouse Hockey.
  • There were a bunch of Scott Hartnell stories yesterday.  One said he is "Missing His Swagger"... [CSNPhilly]
  • ...Another says he's "stuck in the worst drought of his professional career"... [DelcoTimes]
  • ...Another has Assistant Coach Craig Berube saying Hartnell's problems could reside between the ears... [Daily News]
  • ...And the last one starts off saying Scott Hartnell can't find the net.  (This after saying Jeff Carter can't miss the net.  Pssshhh.  But this writer was just trying to be clever.)  [Inquirer]
  • Looking forward, we probably should start rooting for the Senators.  [DelcoTimes]
  • Ever wonder who's getting the edge in penalties at home?  Well Mike Richards isn't.  He gets over 74% of his penalty minutes in the Wach. [Behind The Net]
  • A ton of goaltending stories for you.  First, are expensive goaltenders worth the money? [Behind The Net]
  • Who are the five most inconsistent goalies in the NHL this season? [Hockey or Die]
  • What about the five most consistent goalies this season? [Hockey or Die]
  • And of course, a listing of all goalies in the NHL this season. [Hockey or Die]
  • Lastly, if we can assume 93 points will guarantee a playoff spot, a listing of what every team has to do to get to that point.  [From The Rink]

There’s some good stuff in there.

First of all, I definitely want to face Ottawa, Buffalo and to a lesser extent NJ. If’ we’re seeing the Capitals or Penguins in the first round, it could be another very quick postseason.

The look at goalies is always very interesting and leads me to conclude that the only sure fire way to fill the goaltending position is to scout a guy effectively, draft him and then let him develop for a few years in the minors, then bring him up. You’ll get a few cheap years out of him when it’s important to have a solid team in front of him before he demands $5MM per season and hamstrings you with his salary.

We are due to beat Ottawa in the playoffs. I’m not really afraid of Jersey either, Kovalchuk or Novalchuk.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Mar 9, 2010 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

I certainly agree with your conclusion on goalies. There’s a reason I’m following and adding to the Fly Bys how Jacob De Serres, Adam Morrison, Jakub Kovar, and Joacim Eriksson are doing. I’m not going to lie and say the Flyers have a Jimmy Howard in the system, but they finally have more than one intriguing prospect in net.

I’d say Eriksson is the furthest along, then De Serres, Kovar, and Morrison. I don’t know much about Kovar, but he’s two years older than Morrison, so… by default.

yeah, i was intrigued last season when they signed Backlund, figuring they were hoping for a Hiller/Gustavsson type find (not saying Gustavsson is going to pan out mind you)

by HockeyOutsiders on Mar 9, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Backlund is very intriguing. He didn’t look good in the preseason, has impressed in Adirondack, the team says they’re high on him, yet they don’t trust him to play… I think his ceiling is NHL backup, but we’ll see.

by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 9, 2010 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure if I remember correctly, but when Backlund played in the preseason, hadn’t he had basically zero time to adjust to the differences of the North American game? I thought that was a goal of having him play in Adirondack for a while. If that’s the case, I would think that what we saw in the preseason could be almost completely different than what we would see now. Like I said, could be, not definitely will be, but I don’t think we’ll have any ability to tell until we actually see him in an NHL game.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 9, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

You’re certainly right. I’d go further and say we’d definitely see a difference in Backlund if he were playing tonight. He was very new (maybe first ever games) to the North American style.

by Geoff Detweiler on Mar 9, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

The thing I like is that they’re fairly young prospects, too. Kovar’s 21, DeSerres is 20, Eriksson turns 20 next month, and Morrison just turned 19. If any of them pan out, we could have a decent goalie for a good number of years.

I think he is the best prospect in the system anyone who wins MVP of the Q is a damn good prospect.

by chrislanci on Mar 9, 2010 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Lets’ go back 20 years of QMJHL MVP Winners:

1990 Andrew McKim
1991 Yanic Perrault
1992 Charles Poulin
1993 Jocelyn Thibault
1994 Emmanuel Fernandez
1995 Frederic Chartier
1996 Christian Dube
1997 Daniel Corso
1998 Ramzi Abid
1999 Mattheri Chouinard
2000 Brad Richards
2001 Simon Garmache
2002 Pierre-Marc Brouchard
2003 Joel Perrault
2004 and 2005 Sidney Crosby

I’m not going more recently than that because those guys are too young to judge yet.

Thats 4 of 15 winners who have had NHL careers (I didn’t research, just went by players I’ve ever heard of).

by MarioD on Mar 9, 2010 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

Ramzi Abid played a few games with the Penguins, I think. But yeah, you’re totally right.

The only difference I would bring up is that for a goalie to have great numbers in the Q, he has to be pretty good. The Q is a ridiculously tilted league in the direction of offense.

by Travis Hughes on Mar 9, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Just for the sake of completeness, I looked, but there were only 2 more that had anything you could claim was a legitimate career.

2003 – Brouchard: Currently on LTIR in what would be his 7th full season with the Wild, the entirety of every season since 02-03 (did play in the AHL during the lockout, though). His concussion this year could be career threatening though, he’s been out since October and hasn’t even started skating yet.

1994 – Emmanuel Fernandez: Hasn’t exactly been consistent and has bounced between the NHL and other levels all the time, but has managed 325 total NHL games.

The rest, not so much.

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 9, 2010 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think Dube went for the easier money of playing in Switzerland, since he’s a dual citizen and doesn’t count as an import over there.

Perrault arguably has had a legitimate, if low-grade, career. Not consistent, only 89 NHL games, but it’s humorous to see that he was drafted by Phoenix, traded to St. Louis, and then picked up off waivers by the ‘Yotes. He’s one where you can see that the defense in the QMJHL tends to be weak. He averaged 1.04 Pts/G in Quebec, but it had increased each season to the point where he scored 1.66 Pts/G his last year. In his four AHL years prior to being called up, his average was 0.57 Pts/G. In his NHL career, it’s 0.29 Pts/G.

Honestly, who invited Debbie Downer here? We have a goaltending prospect playing well, winning the highest award in an offense dominated league and he finds a way to make it a negative. Who pisses in your cheerios every morning to make you this bitter?

by Pondhockey on Mar 10, 2010 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, and Jeff Carter “can’t miss the net”, except for those league-leading 130 times this season he has. Maybe he was trying to say something about Carter having 8 goals in 8 games (27.6% shooting percentage).

eddie olcyk (stops for applause) seems to think that carter will hit 40 goals this year. while he has been on a tear, and the schedule favors, other people on this team are scoring as well.

i can see upper 30s maybe.

by psudrozz on Mar 9, 2010 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

The thing is, I see Carter as a routine 35 goal scorer. I think last year was somewhat of a fluke. The guy had like 35 goals at the all-star break, then like 10 after, it was ridiculous (*not exact numbers, just pulled from my memory)

I’d be happy if he routinely scored 40, but I’m not sure that is entirely within expectations.

I am assuming in the article about Carter that Hartnell’s quote about Carter wanting to be the leader of this team, that Hartnell meant Carter wanted to be A leader on the team, and not, the leader since Richards is the Captain?

I am not trying to nit pick or start drama, I just found that quote to be odd.

by EREX21 on Mar 9, 2010 12:47 PM EST reply actions

I thought his comments about the chemistry of the team being affected by last year’s trade deadline was a bit more telling.

There has to be some truth to the Lavy-Boosh tension. This is getting ridiculous.

by Snevik on Mar 9, 2010 1:46 PM EST reply actions

Exactly what I’m thinking… WHen will he get a start? In a game where he’s likely to fail (Chicago?) so Lavy can say, see? there’s a reason we don’t play him.

Should we start something on the level of the Wild fans’ Free Petr Sykora campaign earlier this year? I know they weren’t successful, but if people cared we could give it a go. Somebody threw out a pretty good catch phrase in the game thread, I think it was “Set the Boosh loose”…

by DragonGirl0583 on Mar 9, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

They were successful, Sykora was waived wasn’t he? How much more free can you get?

by ToddtheFox on Mar 9, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

I thought their goal was trying to get him back on the ice in the NHL? I agree that getting waived may have been better than the press box, though, depending on the player’s point of view.

I really hope Hartnell turns it around. He’s one of my favorite Flyers right now. I’m trying to find reasons to believe in him again but its getting pretty hard to.

Hartnell trying too hard

Hartnell is trying too hard he has to just relax calm down and keep it simple dump and chase and go to the net, enough with all the touch passes just inside the blue line or the McNabb like laser passes to guys in the slot that they have no chance of getting a clean stick on.. Just shoot and go to the net get the dirty goals.
