Philadelphia Flyers at New York Islanders, Apr 1, 2010 7:00 PM EDT
#6 Philadelphia Flyers (38-32-6, 82 pts) at #13 New York Islanders (31-35-10, 72 pts)
Nassau Coliseum - 7:00 PM ET - Uniondale, NY
TV: CSN Philly HD, MSG Plus

This is the open game thread.
Get the New York perspective at Lighthouse Hockey

I'm going to keep this really, really succinct by simply posting a few visuals.

There is absolutely zero reason not to beat the Islanders into the ground tonight.
After the jump, lineups, questions and our in-game discussion thread.
Flyers Line Combinations
Hartnell – Richards – Giroux
Gagne – Briere – Leino
van Riemsdyk – Powe – Asham

New York Line Combinations
Moulson - Bailey - Okposo
Tambellini - Tavares - Comeau
Sim - Neilsen - Hunter
Bergenheim - Park - Jackman

Questions to Answer
- The Flyers went three whole days without playing and still held their place. Back in action, are they in 6th at the end of the night?
- Can John Tavares go a game without scoring against the Flyers?
- Biron has been a sieve against us all year. Does that continue tonight?
- 16th straight?

We were inactive for three days, and no one jumped us in points. We didn’t gain points, and we didn’t lose ground in GP, but they didn’t gain points, and DID lose ground in GP.

i think you meant to say “there” place not “third” place (or perhaps you meant to say “sixth” place since that is where we have been for the past 3 days)

Sorry but I just don’t understand when you have tough guys like laperriere and asham why cote is in the lineup he offers nothing but fists. Why not call up Legein or Matsumoto or Maroon.
The Flyers would be better bringing Colin Forbes back from Germany and re-signing him than inserting Cote into the lineup.

So whats the deal with Popov? Is he coming over next year and if he is is he going to bhave a shot at the flyers lineup or more then likely the phantoms?
I admittedly don’t know much about Popov, except that he’s come on as of late. I believe euroflyers said he agreed in principle to a deal for next year, but I could be mistaken. If it’s true, it’s in a Fly By from the past two weeks.
If he comes over, he has a good chance to win a spot – meaning better than Testwuide, Rinaldo, Wellwood, etc. – but it’s unlikely. I expect him to start for the Phantoms first.

Its time to give Duchesne a chance. When nothings going right its time to throw a change. Putting a rookie in gives him a chance to play and tells your team that they need to step up for a young goalie because obviously they don’t want to play in front of Boucher which is to bad because he has done nothing to deserve it.
I’m curious, does anyone know who our “Emergency Backup” is, say that Boucher and Duchene both happen to get injured?

No, that’s his fault. But if you read another Flyers blog, they would argue that fact.
and can’t motivate his guys to play a full 60 minutes?
Why is that his job? If you’re in the NHL, you should motivate yourself. But he called a meeting after Saturday’s loss, and got his team to play great on Sunday. What do you want out of him?

I wasn’t implying so much that it rests solely on his shoulders, but as the captain, he’s always interviewed, so I get angry at him almost every post-game. And, he never says anything different. And, he never shows any emotion.
When I hear him say that we just have to move on, I want to explode. I know you can’t dwell on a loss, but really, you could lose every game, and say that same thing….“well, we’ve lost 27 in a row, but we can’t dwell on this, we have to get ready for tomorrow.” Bullshit.
Which is exactly why it shouldn’t bother you. Who cares what he says to the media?

I’m not going to try to ass-fuck him just because one game they announced he motivated the team. Do it every fucking game. I need to hear, as a fan, that the guys are pissed off that they can’t get this shit together. When he’s talking to the media, he’s addressing the fans as well, in my mind, and it’s just shit coming out of his mouth….sorry for the language
No worries about the language. I just don’t understand why this town needs angry leaders. The last angry leader this town saw got run out of town (Larry Bowa). Who’s the leader of the Phillies now? Chase Utley, maybe? He’s a lot like Richards. Is it J-Roll? He’s busy running his mouth and crackin jokes. I have no idea why people need Mike Richards to be pissed when talking to the media.
Former Flyer Captains: Jason Smith (quiet, unassuming); Forsberg (quiet), Primeau (not exactly what you’re clamoring for now), and Eric Desjardins. The only guy in that list who fits the descriptions you listed was Derian Hatcher… 4 years before he came to Philly.
This town just goes after somebody they think deserves blame. Irrationally. Boucher, Richards, McNabb, Burrell, Rolen, etc.
You want someone to be pissed off cause you’re pissed off. Good. But you can’t judge whether they are pissed off or not just by how they talk to the media. You think Lappy and Betts aren’t pissed? You can tell Lavy is pissed just watching the bench during games. Pronger is pissed based on his in game tussles. People are pissed, why do you need one particular guy to show his anger to Panotch, SanFilippo, Carchidi, and Seravalli? I’d rather MANY guys show their anger to each other.

Obvious difference: the Phillies win. People don’t care how the team operates if they’re winning. When they aren’t we’ll look for any reason why they aren’t, whether it’s Richards and Carter partying or bad leadership or whatever, regardless of how much it actually does or doesn’t effect the team.

Yeah, but that’s exactly my point. That doesn’t mean Carter is an alcoholic or Richards is a terrible captain, it means they’re losing and the fans are just looking “for any reason why they aren’t” winning.

Biron made about 6 there are goals scored in hockey where yes you can’t blame the goalie but a NHL goalie can make a good save Boosh DID NOT
I won’t even get into the timing either and how bad goal 4 killed the momentum to start the 2nd period.
How much more fukcing depressing is this
that we’re in April and lose to the ISLES of all teams like this?? WTF???? This team is such a disgrace! I’m not abandoning my team but I’m so sick of this shit. This team is beyond bad…it’s pathetic. We don’t deserve to be in the playoffs- that’s for teams that actually give a shit.

Same could be said about Boosh, too, right? But the team doesn’t help him, it’s flat out ridiculous. If they gave him support, he might give up 1 bad goal instead of 3. I’m not saying the guy is perfect, because he’s not, but the team refusing to help him out is just appalling.
by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 1, 2010 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Totally agree when your top goalies are out your team has to make it as easy on the next guy as possible
we were playing catch up the whole game after those fluky goals not Boucher’s fault the Islanders are going to get a scoring chance here and there as we press and pinch to get back in the game you goalie has to give you and opportunity to come back not let in retarded soft goals that a pee-wee goalie could stop
You can’t count on that, and to bring up anybody at this point who isn’t playoff eligible is silly. Where does it get us, really?
by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 1, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
We don’t have another call up, our only options are like, one day amateur tryout contracts once we get deeper than Boucher, Duschene, and Backlund. There’s nobody left that’s eligible.

how can you think about Defending him after that game he had a 0.790 SV PCT I don’t care about bad defensive plays you guys blasted Leighton for letting in bad goals in games we got shutout in and Boosh didn’t make one save where he had to actually move
This is what I mean your blaming it all on Boucher but the defense is as much at fault for allowing those chances to reach him.
what chances goals 4 and 5 we routine plays no defense is going to give up zero chances in a game especially when they are pressing trying to even the game up down 3 goals
then in the Minnesota game when we back off and try to go into a shell to protect our goalie who can’t make a save he still gets beat 3 times on the 6 shots we gave up in the 3rd period
But blaming him for goals 4 and 5 is exactly the problem. After 3 goals go in, who cares at that point?

I care because there is time to come back and a lot of hockey to play we did score 4 goals and it is the Islanders, Geoff he has to make a save a good save on a legitmate scoring chance especially late in a game when we are controlling the play I can’t believe you guys are defending Boosh here
wait? we were controlling play, was that after the isles made it a 3 goal or 4 goal lead? we were never controlling play. they had our nuts in a vice from the start in this game.
We’re even, because I can’t believe you’re attacking him and not everybody else too.
by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 1, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Not trying to attack him just stating my point when you are losing by 3 goals or more you aren’t controlling the play. The Isles were sitting just buying time knowing the win was pretty much in the bag unless they played stupid.
My comment was a direct response to chrislanci’s comment of " I can’t believe you guys are defending Boosh here", not to you. Sorry if that wasn’t clear enough.

would be true if the team showed up. But when the team quits on you (AGAIN!) can you seriously fault him for not making a save on the Islanders 5th goal? He has absolutely no support. He’s down 3-0 again, and you’re blaming HIM for the Islanders converting on a scoring chance for their 5th goal? Seriously. This is like Mario blaming JVR for not being in position while the other team scores a 3-on-1 after Hartnell made a turnover and Coburn took himself out of the play.

MarioD style here it is
you’re blaming HIM for the Islanders converting on a scoring chance for their 5th goal
I don’t think that weak wrist shot from Hunter from outside the dots qualifies as a scoring chance.
would be true if the team showed up. But when the team quits on you (AGAIN!)
down 3 goals after 7:42 minutes I don’t think the team had team to quit on the goalie
quits on you (AGAIN!)
that is like what came first the chicken or the egg did the team quit 1st then the goalie shit the bed or did the goalie shit the bed then the team quit it goes both ways
This is like Mario blaming JVR for not being in position while the other team scores a 3-on-1 after Hartnell made a turnover and Coburn took himself out of the play.
Leighton would have made that save.
Sorry dude, you’re not quite as skilled of a debater as Mario is. I don’t often agree with him, but he’s got plenty of practice at the arguing part.

Id say the team quit those first two goals boucher had very little chance on, especially the second the first was tough thats the type of save that looks good if its made but horrible when missed
Annnnd continue the theme:
down 3 goals after 7:42 minutes I don’t think the team had [time] to quit on the goalie
The point is that they already did. They “quit” by not showing up in the first 7:42.
that is like what came first the chicken or the egg did the team quit 1st then the goalie shit the bed or did the goalie shit the bed then the team quit it goes both ways

Going into every game knowing that it’s you agains the entire other team is not easy, man. They just showed a replay of a 48 second shift where the flyers never even touched the puck in the defensive zone. 2 on 1s, losing the battles, not playing well at all, it’s really hard to be the backstop for all of that, let alone having bounces that are beyond all control ALWAYS going against you. It’s a shit situation and if you’ve never been there then you don’t know.

Well, Leighton had help and Boosh didn’t. Leighton played on a six-man team out there and Boosh has maybe 1 or 2 guys actually trying on most nights. It’s apples and oranges when you look at the whole team. Neither goalie is perfect, but one has had much better circumstances.

when the goalie lets in two horrendous goals and 5 goals to the Islanders I blame THE GOALIE
and when we play Pittsburg I blame the refs
it is an easy formula
and in the olympics we blame canada

What’s so funny about that is that here in the regular season, some of us seem to be attacking our American players the most (JVR, Boucher). Only Carle seems to be escaping the stigma of being a US citizen on this team….

Come on, man. Comment of the night’s already been chosen…

Ben hasn’t had comment of the night in a long time, IIRC.

Do you seriously not see that both of those happened? You can’t blame the goalie for giving up 5 while the defense left the goalie with no chance on 3.

yeah I do so I am smart not like everybody says but the bigger goals the back breaking goals that turned that game were goals 4 and 5 and they were on Boosh
Admittedly, I turned the game off after the third goal. So the “back breaking goals” for me were not on Boosh. Who’s to say what the “back breaking goals” are? For me, it was the team’s fault. For you, it was Boucher’s. For Boucher, it appears to have been the fact that he didn’t play bad for 20 minutes, and he was still down 3-0.
But here’s what I really don’t get: Boucher isn’t that good. Why are the expectations that he steal them games? I never understand that. It’s not his job to keep a 3-0 game a 3-0 game. It’s his job to make the routine saves. Just like it was Leighton’s. Boucher is a career NHL backup and people (not just you, Chris) are expecting him to play like effing MAF now that it’s “crunchtime”. Any other team – Picture Brent Johnson in PIT, Lalime in BUF, Dannis in NJ – would realize their backups are not their starters. Boucher is THIRD STRING. The team needs to realize that not count on him to stand on his head and keep them down only three goals. That’s not fair to him.

I think people are putting a heavy load on Boucher because of how hot he got 10 years ago during crunchtime and the playoffs and how he was able to steal some games for them. But that was 10 years ago and you are right, he is not MAF or Marty Brodeur in better years. Boosh is a career back-up who every now and again hits a hot streak. He’s by no stretch of the imagination the worst goalie in the world, but people who expect him to step up and steal game after game are expecting too much. Did he give up a pair of soft goals in the latter stages of the game that should have been routine saves? Yeah, he did, but those goals made it 4-0 and 5-1, respectively and at which point, who really gives a shit? It is only getting notoriety now because the Flyers got a pair of garbage time goals to make the score more respectable.
If he can make the routine saves while not giving up soft goals when the games are close and/or the Flyers lead, he would have done a good job. But you really can’t fault him that much when his only 2 bad goals were both goals that made it a 4-goal Islanders lead. I mean really, at that point, who cares?
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
Exactly. Blaming him after the Minnesota game is fine (I still gave a weak defense of him), but this one… really? And no one praises him after the 2-0 loss to Ottawa. He’s becoming the scapegoat, and I hope he requests a trade at the end of the season.

Caron is next
Well Sebastien Caron is number 7. But c’mon thats it? He can’t play in the playoffs so obviously Boucher and Backlund will be the playoff pair. Unless Leighton makes a miraculous comeback.
Next season
I love free agency and trades and I can’t wait to see what the flyers look to do this summer, heres the hoping they can trade for or tender a contract to a RFA like Halak or Pavelec, a young promising goalie who can be a future star. Halak has outplayed Price in Montreal all season not to mention playing well in one of the most demanding franchises in the league.
