  1. Only one question today: is this the last game of the season?

It's all on the line today. We get seventh win a win, ninth with a loss. New York will take eighth with a win, ninth with a loss. Do it, Flyers. CSN, NHL Network outside of Philly and in Canada,WIP, right here. LET'S GO FLYERS!

By the way, this is from Blueshirt Banter about the game.

Now let’s be honest here. The Flyers, as a whole, are a much better hockey team than our Blueshirts. They have a more dangerous top six forwards and their defense is much bigger and experienced. There are two things that the Rangers have the edge in, though. The first is obviously goaltending with Henrik Lundqvist, and the other, I feel, is momentum.

I’d take having a better Offense and Defense than a better goalie any day of the week. Besides I personally feel like we have the momentum especially with the huge loud crowd that is going to be at the game today.

by Wilkey on Apr 11, 2010 12:02 PM EDT reply actions

Really? Because what has having a better offense and defense gotten this team so far? Goaltenders win play off games.

That only makes me feel a tad better. The Flyers are too inconsistent to put me at ease for a game like this.

My biggest fears today: 1). The Flyers sleepwalk through their game of the year. 2). The game goes to a shootout.

Somehow, some way, everything is set up perfectly for the Flyers (that is, there’s no way to be facing the Caps). So do they finally take advantage of these opportunities, or do they blow it? No way to know until the game is over, I figure…

Here are my predictions for this game:
1. Richards gets a hat trick with three short handed goals.
2. Gaborik loses his teeth in a rematch with Carbomb.
3. Brian Boucher has 0 saves because no shots actually reach him. He stops all pucks in mid air like Neo stops bullets in The Matrix. This is of course if Lappy decides to not block shots, just to make things a little interesting.
4. Tortorella has a heart attack mid way through the third.
5. Jeff Carter scores 10 goals.
6. Pronger stares down Drury. Drury wets himself and curls into a fetal position while mumbling something about “cold darkness”.
7. Avery comes out of the closet at the end of the game and apologizes to Elton John for taking all his “sloppy seconds”.

Did Hartnell actually get a decent shot there? I’m amazed.

In fairness to the Flyers, Jody Shelley is a top goal scorer. When Jody Shelley wants to score, Jody Shelley scores.

by The DTrain on Apr 11, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, This is bound to be good
You can't, but you thought that You could

by jello44 on Apr 11, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

You just gave up the first goal of the game, got an offensive zone draw off icing… and sent out your fourth line. Great coaching!

by MarioD on Apr 11, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

yeah what the fuck was that about

by j reed on Apr 11, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand Hartnell has had a tough season but everybody is quick to forget he was a 30 goal scorer last season, tons of players have off seasons. Let it go and talk about something else.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, this is Philly “what have you done for me lately”

He’s playing, and Leino ins’t I believe, and if you have a player that’s going downhill fast, you don’t play him unless you have to.

by JerseyDriver on Apr 11, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I agree Im all for Leino over Hartnell at this point Im just sick of seeing comment after comment on every little play he has. Every time he touches the puck someone has a smart ass comment.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t believe after the game he had on Friday that they dressed him. Total bad call from the coach. Unless he scores two and assist on another and doesn’t take a stupid penatly, it’s a waste

by JerseyDriver on Apr 11, 2010 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

True Im all for Leino over Hartnell right now, might give Hartnell a scare.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah he had been a good solid addition until this game.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

If he wasn’t taking a dumb penalty every single game it wouldn’t be such a big deal. If he just went out there and tried and got a point here or there that’s one thing. But with him having a bad year the only time people talk about him is when he commits a dumb penalty, and then they add to it by mentioning his awful season.

by EREX21 on Apr 11, 2010 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

No offense because Im a flyers fan and if my favorite team were the defending champs I’d be running my mouth all over their posts lol

Almost 20 shots in a period, and folks are complaining? This looks almost like a men’s league game. If they keep this pace, the goals will come.

Why would people want to pay to see a losing team? It transcends across all sports. I went to a ton of games in the late 90s and early 2000s (and a good part of the darker years). There’s a strong sense of “what did I pay for?” when the team loses 4-1 or 3-0 without even putting up a fight.

You still responded.

The correlation to Pittsburgh’s struggle in the late 90s and Tampa’s current struggles is very similar in fact. Owners who had a hand in the entertainment business, opted to operate the franchise on debt rather than a budget, not putting fans in the seats – very similar. Only difference is Pittsburgh was a proven hockey market that needed to be resurrected. Tampa never really had that presence.

30 goals last season, 30 assists, he’s tough, he may not deserve a NTC but hey he wiggled one out of us, so Homers the real dipshit here not Hartnell.

I will agree with you on the Homer comment. He is a real dipshit.

by LegionofDoom on Apr 11, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

the only thing homer was great at was when he dished Forsberg for Parent, Upshall and a first rounder then sending them back the first rounder for Timonen and Hartnell, absolute steal there.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Then he screws up by giving Hartnell a NTC and trading Upshall, I like Carcillo but would still not make that trade, Upshall is a good player.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Upshall and Umberger are two of Homer biggest screw ups.

by LegionofDoom on Apr 11, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

The Umberger trade was screwed because the Preds took the guy the flyers wanted a pick ahead of them Chet Pickard, so Homer made a gamble and lost there but no call for sending Upshall to the Coyotes for Carcillo.

And you know what sucks the most? At least by the third period of game 5 against the Pens in 2008, Timmy and Propp could start to talk about the future. And we all thought there was a very bright future. Looked to be good prospects, and some up-and-coming major impact players. A little less than two years later and this team has no future to speak of.

by Ben Feldman on Apr 11, 2010 4:47 PM EDT reply actions

I’m still high on the futures of Giroux and JVR. I think we expected a little too much coming into this season. That said, I’m done with Parent and Coburn. I thought they were going to be good defensemen for years to come. I don’t know what happened to them.

by mattjg on Apr 11, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

by The DTrain on Apr 11, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

You’re right. This is it. The Flyers are not going to be any better next year. Even if Homer blows it up the right way, it’s still not going to be a cup contending team. We have pieces of the puzzle, but it is nowhere close to being complete.

That’s why I want in so bad this year, to at least say we made something of this piss poor clusterfuck of a season.

by StarbladeMKIII on Apr 11, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Homer was very direct at the season ticket holder townhall meeting thing. Someone asked/yelled at him about all the NTCs, and he specifically said “if I wanted to trade Hartnell, I’d go to him and say, ‘Scott, give me a list of ten teams you would play for’, and that would be that.”

he can’t handle the load….his physiology hasn’t adapted to the load of a full season…He went from a 40 game season to and 80…that’s like doubling your weight for a squat without building up to it . Seriously dumb….he fatigues quickly and when fatigue the load falls on the connective tissue (tendons and ligaments) . Considering the sheering forces alone that the hip is exposed to from skating, damage that won’t show up for a few years in the form of a sportsman hernia or like injury is occuring.

by chillicothe20 on Apr 11, 2010 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

Gotta give it to Laviolette.. he out coached Torts tonight. Not that it’s hard to do. Jokinen in the SO? Uh, Gaborik???? Thank god we won that. Makes up for the Winter Classic and some other crap games. Boucher was very good in a game where he didn’t see consistent shots.

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

Gaborik sucks in shootouts right? How was it the wrong move to keep him out?

by JasonB on Apr 11, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Because he’s your star scorer and almost scored near the end of the game. I’m just saying you live/die with your star players and Jokinen in not one.

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Out of 165 players with 10 or more shots in a SO, Gaborik has the sixth lowest shooting percentage at 11.11% (below him are Taylor Pyatt, Alex Ponikarovsky, Michael Frolik, Bobby Ryan and Kyle Okposo).

In comparison, Jokinen’s 40% is awesome.

Gaborik is historically awful in shootouts.

by The DTrain on Apr 11, 2010 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Doesn’t matter you still go with your best scorer.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Ollie Jokinen is 53rd out of 196 in NHL history (10 attempts or more) scoring 40% of his shootout attempts.
Marian Gaborik is 191st out of 196 in NHL history (10 attempts or more) scoring 11% of his shootout attempts.

Thats a no brainer.

by MarioD on Apr 11, 2010 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

I have knocked on Boosh before but again I insert foot in my mouth. That game for boucher will go down like that 2002 5 OT game he won now this one. It would be sweet if he can be great throughtout the playoffs

I wasn't even a year old but I stayed up to be outside the Vet with my Dad and Mom when the Phillies won the World Series 1980.

by Christopher A on Apr 11, 2010 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

While I’m there, Flyers players in shootouts:

  1. Danny Briere (42%)
  2. Mike Richards (32%)
  3. Simon Gagne (26%)
  4. Jeff Carter (17%)

Giroux hasn’t qualified yet, he’s now 3/8 on shootouts (37%)

by MarioD on Apr 11, 2010 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

Fucking auto-format…

Briere is 35th in NHL history
Richards is 108th
Gagne is 150th
Carter is 181st

by MarioD on Apr 11, 2010 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

my wife was saying “why isn’t Giroux shooting first!” ahahh. We both hate the shootouts.
A lot more when we lose.

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone else’s numbers are before today, so Giroux coming in was at 26%.

Lavi ordered them perfectly.

by MarioD on Apr 11, 2010 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

So you put the best guy first, 2nd – 2nd etc?

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so. I don’t get the idea of saving your best for last in this format.

by JasonB on Apr 11, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

right, I guess because it’s often decided by the 2nd shooter.

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Your best shooter should go second just incase you don’t get a third attempt, put your most unerestimated player first, I was shocked Parenteau went instead of Gaborik, I was sure it would be Gaborik,. But its all over now and the Flyers are in, Gaborik can grab the golf clubs now.

by ryanitus on Apr 11, 2010 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes you put the best guy first, it’s all about momentum in a S.O

by EREX21 on Apr 11, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

As you can see by Boucher vs Lundqvist in the SO- stats only mean so much. Sometimes you gotta go with a gut instinct and judge by how a player is playing in the current game. I’m just saying, I would’ve put Gaborik in the 1st shooting slot. The other two were good choices.

ahah as I’m typing this Fischler and Daneyko are saying “where was Gaborik in the SO!!!”
so maybe I am wrong

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

There’s a difference between going with Gagne over Giroux, or something more similar, on gut instinct and going with someone really good (Jokinen) over someone who is awful at it (Gaborik).

by MarioD on Apr 11, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

who is the best SO guy in history?

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

my guess… the other Jokinen.

by mixtery on Apr 11, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Vyacheslov Kozlov – although technically, Petteri Nummelin.
