Nothing about the lupul comments suprise me. He was such the least of the value given up for Pronger. That guy is such a lazy fraud it is no wonder he is on his fourth team in almost as many years.

playoffs/pronger/bartulis

personally, i have really liked the way the refs have been handling the past 4 games. i think the calls were evenly called both ways (e.g. in a fight, no extra “bs” penalty dished out), and for the most part they let the teams play.

which brings me to my next point: pronger goes into beast mode in this environment. he was just nasty yesterday, and i’m sure kovalachuk is having nightmares before game one.

last question: does anyone think bartulis might deserve a shot at the lineup? karjicek and parent were the worst pairing yesterday; krajicek got dogged on the first goal when he had clear position on the rangers forward, and parent was getting beat pretty badly in the corners.

I noticed this too. I remember at the beginning of the season reading an article about how Pronger has earned the respect of the officials throughout his career, and this allows him more leeway with some extra-curricular stuff. I definitely noticed this yesterday when he laid a vicious (dirty) cross check into someones back and it went uncalled. Not saying that I want our guys to play dirty, but the fact that Pronger won’t be afraid to mash people is a very good sign. He was an absolute hammer yesterday.

Furthermore, I think the home and home series against NJ back in February (Flyers won both games in OT if I remmeber correctly) is a perfect example of just how valuable Chris Pronger is. From the second period on in both games he took over the ice and made Kovalchuk look like an AHL player.

it goes both ways. timmonen got steamrolled in the crease by a cross check as well. the point is, the refs aren’t calling the game with the bettman collar on, and it makes for great hockey.

but yeah-pronger’s taping on the foil already. i can’t wait.

Do the Refs hate Carcillo I seen him take some good shots in the head since the break none have been called.

I think its the “you live by the sword you die by the sword” judgement.
They know he trying to get his temper under control and yet they know he is not there yet.
….so they do let him get away with a bit more than they used to, but they also let him endure some shots as well.

that, and carbomb has been….accentuating….some contact.

i don’t like it. he doesn’t need to do that crap to be an effective player.

Lupul is Mike Richards with less scoring, glad we got rid of his bum ass when we did. BTW, I am ow a follower of lupes on twitter now.

Lupul is Richards with less scoring and much less caring.

You’re free to criticize Richie, but at the end of the day he gives a fuck, whereas Lupul does not. I don’t miss the latter at all.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 12, 2010 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

No

Richards gives a fuck when he wants to give a fuck, like the past few games for example. But he does tend to go through LONG stretches where he play’s like he can give two s**ts. This team lives and dies by Richards, when he plays well, the team wins. When he plays like a fucktard, the team loses. Im all for Richards and I hope he can play with a high level and become the player I once hoped, but this season was very telling of both his character and work ethic. Like I said, if he can grow up and play game in and game out, this team is up there with Wash and Pitt.

I agree that Richie has bad stretches, but it’s usually when he tries too hard and tries to do too much on his own. Then he makes stupid mistakes and plays poorly. But honestly, I don’t think it’s for lack of effort. He always tries but he sometimes tries TOO hard and that is when he screws up.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 12, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m in the middle of both of your positions on this…. I agree that the team needs Richie to play at 100% for them to play well, and that he goes through long stretches with less aggression on the ice, but I won’t go as far as JpH to say he completely doesn’t care. I’m with mikefive in thinking that maybe he tries too hard and tries to do too much on his own; but I’d apply that more to his attempts to rally the team. I think maybe he gets overwhelmed sometimes. For me, I can tell the difference in Richards with how agressive his is and how much he attacks; when he’s crashing the net hard and being aggressive on the forecheck is when he’s effective at firing up the team, but when he’s just playing his game without that extra level of attack, he doesn’t get the team going as much. The team and the fans need to see that extra level of attack, because we know it’s there, so when we don’t see it we feel like he’s not giving 100%.

by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 12, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Ritchie really needs to start showing some emotion. I watched the game yestersday and all I could think was Show some fucking emotion! Richie is an effective leader when he plays well and leads by example. When he has a bad game he can’t lead. If he was yelling at people on the bench or encouraging his team during the game it would be different. I like Ritchie, he just has to start leading in other ways than by example. Sure you hear about him consoling people in the locker room but nothing on the ice.

by SkookFlyerfan on Apr 12, 2010 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont he its that he doesn’t care, I should have been more clear. I just think that he feels too “untouchable” if thats even the right word. I just think he got a lot too fast, and now he plays with more of a care-free style then the workhorse we saw two years ago.

I’ll admit, when Richards and Hartnell are playing well, they are two of my favorite players in the league. I just get kinda pissed knowing how much time/money I invest in this team, just to watch them play like crap.

lol, thats makes my life outside of the sports teams seem very shallow, but its true. And like I said above, When Richards is playing well, the whole team plays well, and I’ll take that statement to the grave.

I think the organization fluffed Richards up to be bigger than he actually is. They sold it to us the fans and stroked his ego untill we all believed it. Now he cant live up to the expectation (he is not a franchise elite player) and im sure it frustrates him as it frustrates me.

He gives a shit but knows he can not be what people told him he could be.
Hopefully he can man up, swallow the bitter truth and become a fucking awsome captain because of his perseverance

Lupil is the only guy we gave away that I do not regret! Have fun is Cali and please do not call Carter!

by Prometheus74 on Apr 12, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

What did the Organization fluff Richards too be. He was always compared to Bobby Clarke he is all-time great Hall of Famer two time MVP. If he falls short of that comparison he is still an elite player. His point total was hurt this year by lack of line-mates he is still a 30 goal scorer around the Bobby Clarke’s goal numbers. Gagne missed 2-3 months and Knuble was let go. Clarkie had Barber and Leech for much of his career. Also with Pronger coming in Richard no longer manned the point on the PP a position where he was very effective.

Richie is the perfect Flyer player. He is a more skilled Rod Brindamour who was a fan favorite. But the media has a bug up their ass up Richards just like they did with Primeau and other Philly Sports players McNabb and Mike Schmidt to name a few and that why the are all over his leadership and off the ice stuff. He won the MVP last year and the Toyoto Cup this year for most stars of the game this year.

Richards is also a finalist for the Mark Messier leadership award. An award which Mark Messier himself hand picks the winner. Based on the following “the award that recognizes an individual as a superior leader within their sport, and as a contributing member of society. The award honors an individual who leads by positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes”. People outside Philadelphia love this guy he was also a member on Team Canada for crying out loud and Captained the World Junior Teams over Crosby and other superstars.

BOTTOM LINE: Don’t read too much into the local papers which have made it personal with Richards this season.

by chrislanci on Apr 12, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I love the guy!

I dont think he will be the next Clark, and thats my point.
He is not a Crosby, or a OV or even a Toews, yet the Organization was hopping for just that. Look at his contract.
When I say one of the elite I mean one of the top 5
As far as THe Messier award…..
Forget about his imature spat with the press,
Lets just look at our teams inconsistencies
Is Richards the cause? NO!!!!!!!!!!
However,
No way has Richards proven this year, that he is one of the best leaders in all of the NHLs lockerooms!

Now I love him. Dose he deserve the uber long contract? Personally Im not sure, but as a fan Im glad we have him for that long.
I hope you can understand the difference Im trying to convey.

by Prometheus74 on Apr 12, 2010 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think Mike Richards cap hit at 5.750 million compares at all to what the elite players are making. I personally think is a better player than Toews and he makes less than him. Toews is a 70 point player. Richards is around the same but has scored more than 80 points twice in his career. I don’t think Mike Richards is super elite, Crosby Ovechkin 100+ point players. But he can certainly be considered in the next tier of guys with Toews and Kane. 30 goals scorers 75-85 points per season. Carter is the closest thing this team has to a superstar as he is a potential 40-50 goal scorer. We have to hope JVR can develop into another 35-40 goal guy and with Giroux we can have a team like the Blackhawks where the sum of all the parts can compete with the true superstar teams.

Cap Hits
Crosby – 8.750
Ovechkin – 9
Toews – 6.5
Kane 6.5

by chrislanci on Apr 14, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Those cap hits are for next year once Kane and Toews are off there entry contracts.

by chrislanci on Apr 14, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

the media also chooses who gets the stars of the game. And this isn’t a media thing, it’s just my openion. I’m not gonna say he’s a bum his whole career because I think he will eventually be thhe star we want. But it’s cllear that he’s not been a good eader at all this year by the way he’s played. And when did the media hate all those players? I know sommeone that writes for the fyers and tis site uses him a lot, and he loved premeu. I’ll agree tat the DN and inquire are terrible sources, but you ave too kook outside the main papers sometimes.

Re: Lupol, you really need to read the comments of the article to see how ridiculously petty and biased that chick is who wrote it:

In full disclosure, I liked him when he was on the Mighty Ducks before shipping him off to Edmonton for Pronger. Once Lupul went to Philly, he developed the ego. He was officially added to my shit list after this quote from his road blog for the Flyers:

What do you miss the most from Philly while you’re on the road? Here was Lupul’s response:

From a game standpoint, I miss our fans. On the road, there’s not a whole lot of buildings that compare to the energy of Philadelphia, especially when you go to places like Columbus and Anaheim. It just doesn’t have the same emotion as it does when you play in front of your home fans in Philly, and as far as I’m concerned, they are the best fans in the league and we definitely miss them.

Lupol does, for one, since he tweeted about how it was insulting.

The premise of her argument is stupid in and of itself (what someone tweets MUST be representative of his actual day!) and she’s blatantly biased against him for the most petty and small-minded of reasons.

And now Geoff linked it over here as if it were fact.

by MarioD on Apr 12, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

He linked a blog post, from this network. He mentions that it’s a “take” on Lupul, and the site he links to has the disclaimer Travis quoted. Swallow your self-righteousness for once; if anyone misconstrues what she wrote for fact, it’s not Geoff’s fault.

by Snevik on Apr 12, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

And all I did was point out how petty and biased her jealous little “take” actually is, and that its completely worthless and shouldn’t be recommended for anyone to read.

by MarioD on Apr 12, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that it’s a dumb “article”. But if anything Flyers-related appears on the network that owns you, you link it, and let it be dismissed in the comments.

by Snevik on Apr 12, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

So you’re basically questioning the journalistic integrity of the entire sbnation website?

And I don’t see how that article was in any way “flyer-related”

Why would the SBNation have journalistic integrity? It’s a collection of opinion pieces.

I agree there should be accountability. I also happen to think a harmless link to a dumb opinion doesn’t undermind it. And while journalistic standards are a way to be held accountable, they aren’t the only way that matters.

I can have personal integrity, and point at someone on the street doing something stupid and say “Look at that.”

by Snevik on Apr 12, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

My opinion, but I think Travis wants it to having integrity. There are times shootouts have been thrown to this site by MSM writers at the end of articles or in tweets (SanFilippo in particular), and I think he’d like people to be able to take it seriously to a point. But there’s no reason an opinion piece can’t be linked and still conform to them, it was never presented as representing the opinion of this site.

by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 12, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Once again: you don’t need journalism to have integrity, or to be taken seriously. Nor do I think getting shoutouts in MSM is the equivalent of either of those things.

by Snevik on Apr 12, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant the shoutouts send new people over here, that’s where I was going with that.

Mario, why can’t you just state your opinion about the article, and leave off that last line? You don’t have to read every article in the Fly-by, if you don’t care about Lupul just don’t follow the link. You stated your opinion about the article in a perfectly valid first two lines, but there’s no reason to go after Geoff for linking it. And, as you’ll note, I said nothing about this site in my original post. Only when Travis posed the question.

So I’m really not sure how your point applies.

by MarioD on Apr 12, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Geoff didn’t “link it here as fact”, so your jab at Geoff was exactly that, a jab. Nothing about Travis’ who cares question required you to take a personal shot, so my point does apply whether you like it or not. Every time you use an opportunity to take a dig at Geoff, Travis, or the site itself, you make people feel defensive about a community that many people care about. It’s like drawing a line down the middle and dividing us into people that side with you or against you, and it makes you the focus of all the attention. That’s why I said it’s not worth it. I’m not going to argue with you about it anymore here because it’ll never end, but there’s no reason to take personal shots at anybody on here. We’re supposed to be here to talk about hockey, not take shots at each other or the site itself.

by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 12, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

You said I set out to “divide the site” whatever that means. When clearly I didn’t since I didn’t even post the allegedly “divisive” comment initially.

I stand behind anything I write. Geoff wrote a suggesting to read that link. I assume he’ll stand behind anything he wrote, as will Travis, even more so since they are running the site.

I don’t know what your problem is with my holding them accountable for their own words.

The fact is, that link shouldn’t be passed on because its so worthless given the chick’s bias. I assume that Geoff either hadn’t seen that (or, more likely, it wasn’t even posted yet when Geoff read the page). So I posted it.

And when Travis asked “Who cares [that its an intellectually dishonest piece of writing]” I responded with why I cared: namely that Geoff hadn’t disclosed how worthless it was.

Maybe you should be a little less sensitive.

by MarioD on Apr 12, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

If you read the comment here, they show quite a few people liked the link.
Therefore your statement, that the link is “worthless”, is not a fact, but only your opinion.
It seems its your opinion on this matter is not in the majority either

Since no one else had mentioned its worthlessness, I thought I’d pass it along, especially since the truth is only found in the middle of the comments section on that site.

Never did anyone even come close to suggesting anything remotely related to an argument that anyone (myself included) clicks on every link posted.

The saddest thing is that its true. I know personally, the guy who wrote the mighty ducks movies that gave the team their name. To see them act as if the franchise has some storied history is comical.

Anaheim fans for the most part know little to nothing about Hockey, and although the arena is great, it’s basically family night out with people half paying attention to what’s going on most of the time. Lupul has always been complimentary of Anaheim, and I’m sure it sucked to be shipped off in a trade, where the team wins the cup the next year, but Lupul said nothing but good things when for the 2nd time he was part of a Chris Pronger trade. Lupul played pretty well before he got hurt, but these people are pissed off that he stated what is just a plain and simple fact: Flyers fans live and die hockey, whereas in Anaheim it’s a diversion.

It’s a little hard to take someone very seriously when part of the criticism of Ryan Getzlaf is that he’s going bald. Typical orange county .

Oh, this is fun.

Now the editor of that blog has conceded that HE has a personal bias against Lupul because of something Jeoffrey said which he imagined to be racist. (Lupul wished the nurse in the hospital after his surgery spoke english.)

Someone at SBNation should probably reevaluate that situation pretty soon.

For what it’s worth, it was a Devils fan who said this series will be the most interesting. But it is the only rivalry in the first round (with any recently history).

Honestly the West excites me a lot more. Its amazing how good all 8 of those teams are. I could honestly see any of those match-ups going either way. I am half tempted to call a Nashville upset of Chicago. The Blackhawks don’t impress me all that much and as long as Nashville can get some scoring, their defense and goaltending will do their part. I’d really like to see LAK and PHX advance.

Undoubtedly, the on-ice product is better, but that doesn’t make for the most interesting series.

And the Hawks are really, really good. No way the Preds have the depth to match them. Short of Rinne going insane—not just very good, but rare stand-on-your-head form—and the Hawks get through.

Off topic

But it needs to be mentioned. I LOVE EVANDER KANE.

Nothing better than seeing low life Matt Cooke get 1 punch KO’d.

I could watch it again and again, it was better then Cats.

I doubt that. Cats is only a couple of hours. Herpes is for life.

NHL Live

did anyone watch it? Brian Boucher was on and hearing him talk and express how he feels on some of the subjects that are surrounding himself and the team, it really gave me a different mind set on the guy.

He was asked on if he likes SO’s or continuous OT; and his response was an A+ and what most philly bloggers on here were preaching yesterday. “It’s not hockey… It’s more for entertainment” (speaking more objectively towards the drama created by shootouts instead of the “boredom” of 3 overtimes…. yeah that sounds like a real snooze.)

Which he does have a point…. we should have never left the format to please passive fans instead of keeping the die-hard fans happy.

Boucher also spoke well of Shelley… (i guess their friends from the time in San Jose.)

Aww, I didn’t see it, is there a place to watch it online?

Boosh was on the ice for that 5OT marathon, so I’m assuming he was tired at the end, but there was definitely drama in that game.

I never considered the angle that while Shelley isn’t known for being a goal scorer, he probably played against Boosh a lot in practice and that may have worked to his benefit in getting those two goals.

You know, that’s something I never understood. “Sudden-death” overtime is as exciting as it gets to me. Next goal, and it’s over. Every time the puck comes into our zone, I’m on the edge of my seat, cringing. Every time the puck is in the offensive zone, I’m standing up screaming. Shoot-outs aren’t even exciting to me. If the shoot-outs were really made for the casual fan, wouldn’t that mean they have to sit through 60 minutes of regular hockey? If they’re that casual and can stand that, I would think even they would agree that back and forth, sudden death hockey is more exciting than pre-planned break-aways…

by Vansteel on Apr 12, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree 100% just look at the greatest game box set an example these games were voted on by the fans. 4 of the games were OT Playoff game winners. The 2004 game we didn’t even win the series. We all we agree that the greatest game since then was the Lupul goal game 7 vs. Washington in 2008 another OT sudden winner. OT is amazing and 5 minutes is way too short it should be back to 10 minutes of OT.

However I don’t mind the shootout instead of the game going to tie but the fact that the shootout win is worth the same as a regulation win is retarded full retarded in fact. It should be 3 point regulation win, 2 for the OT/SO winner and 1 for OT/SO loser.

Playoff OT games on the 10 greatest game box set with fan voting percentage.

2. May 4, 2000 – Keith Primeau scores a goal in the 5th overtime period at Pittsburgh (79.6%)

5. May 20, 2004 – Keith Primeau and Simon Gagne each score a goal as the Flyers defeat Tampa Bay in Game Six (52.7%)

6. May 4, 2004 – Jeremy Roenick scores a goal in overtime at Toronto to win game, 3-2, and series 4-2 (50.9%)

9. May 9, 1974 – Bobby Clarke scores in overtime at Boston (37.9%)

I love overtime, but you can’t leave off Lupul’s goal to beat the Caps in game 7.

Not saying I happy to see someone hurt but Matt Cooke getting KO’d sat night wonderful.

I wasn't even a year old but I stayed up to be outside the Vet with my Dad and Mom when the Phillies won the World Series 1980.

Agreed. I never like to see a player get seriously hurt, but seeing a schmuck like Cooke get his clock cleaned, buffed, and polished is enjoyable.

Even though he didn’t get a point, I would have considered giving Kane a star. He got into Crosby’s head, KO’d Cooke, and drew four penalties over the course of the game (Crosby 2 for cross-checking, Godard 2 for roughing, Rupp misconduct, Kennedy 2 for slashing).
