Oh, phila.bright tweeted this last night. He doesn’t know where to credit it, so yell at him if it’s yours:

special teams
in the second period, the flyers were on the PP, and the devils just…sat back and let the flyers set up. i don’t know why they did this, but it happenned. this is opposed to the first period, when our puckhandlers couldn’t move, let alone make a good pass.
why did the devils switch up? it’s not like the flyers were any better on the faceoffs.
well, im going to enjoy this all day. then promptly forget about it tomorrow morning. hope the flyers do the same.

Marcus Hayes was a little caustic in the his piece on Mike Richards.
“the cardboard captain”, “a vanilla non-star”, and “an afterthought addition to Team Canada”.Richards has won at every level a hockey player can, Memorial Cup, World Junior Championship, Calder Cup, Olympic Gold Medal. He is also a 30 goal scorer I know that might not sound like a big deal but in this era his 31 goals was good for top 20 in the league. In the last all those years in the early 2000’s pre-lockout only Primeau and Gagne broke 30 goals for this team and they did it only once each. That includes Recchi, Roenick and that whole bunch.
Ok so Richards is not Crosby but I wouldn’t go as far as saying he is a none star. 30 goal scorers are few and far between these days to put it in perspective there were 3 – 50 goal scorers, 4 – 40 goal scorers, and only 15 – 30 goal scorers. Richards 31 goals is more than Malkin either of the Sedin Twins, Patrick Kane, Martin St. Louis and Vinny LaCavailer. Give the guy some credit.
One another Note.
After reading that Maroon quote any thoughts on Rick Tocchet taking over the head coach of the Phantoms. No more soft coaches lets get these rear these kids in while they are young.
The Marcus Hayes article… was written by Marcus Hayes.
As far as Tocchet coaching the Phantoms, I don’t think that will solve it. I think a lot of the problems down there were the players. All of this comes out, and no one is questioning Jared Ross’ captaincy. At least the Assistant GM called out the “veteran” signings, but it’s easy to call out the 30+ year olds you signed to a one-year deal who won’t be returning. It’s a lot harder to call out your prospects and team core.

Marcus Hayes shouldn’t write about things about which he knows nothing. This is a guy who got into a hissy fit with a blogger, remember? I hate his smug attitude on DNL and am so happy he’s no longer on the Phillies’ beat.

It was definitely a nice win, but as everyone is saying, it’s a long series and even if the Flyers play like they did last night, it still could go either way.
I’m wondering if Bartulis gets benched. He was not that good last night and everytime he was on the ice, i was holding my breath.

Does anyone think that Leino is going to get a chance to jump in during the series?
Also, just as an afterthought, wouldn’t it be great if Carcillo gets a cup with us? What a turnaround for a guy that came in on the 4th line as a goon and ends up getting promoted to the 1st line and becomes one of the “heart and soul” guys on the team.
Powe played pretty well last night. Barring injury or suspension, I think we’ll being playing out the series with this lineup.
Powe was on the ice at the end of the game, so it seems that Laviolette would keep him around for defensive reasons if nothing else. I think Asham may be replaced if the Flyers have trouble scoring.
I, and along with I’m sure pretty much everyone else, would be more than happy to see Hartnell get the bench for a game or two and get Leino in. I’m not sure if I missed anything, but Hartnell was just aweful last night.
I know they won’t do it, but I just wish they would. Maybe wake him up a little bit.

Nitpick from last night
Who coaches our power play again? After three consecutive dumps led to loss of possession, how does no one adjust? They hung their forwards at the blue line and let Marty and the two defensemen chill at the goal line, collect, and fire out of the zone. Carry the puck in.
Especially frustrating after watching the Western Conference games, where the PPs skated the puck in with ease.
I want to say Craig Berube does special teams, but I could be wrong on that. He might just do the PK.

Yeah, that was seriously frustrating. Hopefully that’s one of the things they’re working on today.

The reason Miller and Boucher are projected to have the same SV% in that article is because Miller did a ton more regular season work in the regular season. Boucher would probably be higher if it took the Olympics into account. His limited regular season work is what puts him in the middle of the pack. By every other metric, Boucher is the worst goalie in the list by far.
I’m actually glad you read it. And while you’re entirely correct, they also looked at career playoff save percentage. Whether that makes it more or less accurate, we’ll see. But it wasn’t just his “limited regular season work”.
Either way, I expect Boucher to have a .982 save percentage this postseason

His career playoff save percentage is the lowest on the chart and lower than the projected save percentage.
But you’re right, the only way I see a save percentage that low is if the Flyers are up 3-0 in the Finals after sweeping the other rounds and so the skaters players decide to see if Boucher can win by himself. He would, of course, but he may give up enough goals that his save percentage comes down to .913.
One more random note from me:
Is anyone else seriously worried about Jeff Carter? He kinda looks like he’s skating on a broken bone.
He seemed relatively invisible to me last night and I would assume that is at least somewhat a result on the injury, so I am pretty worried. I’m slightly more worried about Kovy, if he gets those kinds of opportunities again he is bound to bury them, can’t count on Boosh’s glove being in the right spot all the time, or Kovy missing the net. The guy scared the crud out of me..on the plus side, he makes the Devils far more entertaining to watch.
Yeah, I wish he wasn’t rushed back into the lineup early. A healthy Jeff Carter becomes the Flyer’s most dangerous offensive player, someone that other teams have to focus on defensively — a not fully healed Jeff Carter, clearly is not.
Under the circumstances I understand why Carter rushed himself back … the team could have been fishing right now, so it’s kinda hard to resist the temptation, but what we need for the playoffs is a guy who is physically up to the challenge and not nursing an injury.
I hope I’m wrong on this, but it doesn’t look that way in the last 2 games.
yeah, i thought so too. worst-case, it’s still broken and getting worse. best-case, he’s nowhere near game shape. i feel like this is what carter’ll look like 10 years from now…he has a great shot, but so much of his game is speed since he’s such a strong skater, and without wheels he really looks lost
Okay, one more random note. The Pens’ playoff slogan this year: “Out for Justice.” Apparently, there’s a pandemic of righteousness in the Pens’ locker room, and they are united around have wronged they’ve been. They are stonewalling on the details and origin of the catchphrase.
Hubris is fun.
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/champs+want+justice/2908245/story.html
This came apparently from Bill Guerin. “Someone” hid his dentures on him earlier in the season and he still hasn’t found the culprit.
Crosby is also looking for justice, as there were no arrests involved in the misbagging of his Olympic gold medal scoring stick. Along with that outrage, he still has no idea what happened to his favorite blankie.
Justice? So are they going to be eliminated in the 1st round?

Pronounced “Yustice.”
Out for Yustice.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
That’s worse than Relentless. If anyone should be out for justice, it should be Simon Gagne who keeps having all of his goals stolen this season. F.U., FSN Pittsburgh!

I think the Flyers’ slogan for 2006-07 (and for long stretches this year) should have been, “Wait, How Do You Play?”
There is a story behind that line. BUT I CAN’T TELL YOU because NONE OF YOU ARE ON THE PENGUINS, and NEITHER AM I.
