Hartnell said coach Peter Laviolette addressed the issue with players like himself and Daniel Carcillo.
“Yeah, we got talked to,” Hartnell said. "But we’re smart enough players, we’ve been around long enough to know the after-the-whistle penalties, the scrums, things like that, that’s the refs are looking for.
“You just have to play hard between the whistles. Once that whistle comes, you have to take a punch in the face, skate away or get right out of there.”

I sent this article over to you guys right before this post, but I found it interesting to see that Hartnell and Carcillo were “talked to” about not taking penalties before game 1. Hmmm, if this is the first time Lavi has talked to Hartnell about this, it makes me nervous.

That is troubling. Hopefully it was a “reinforcement” type thing.

I’ll admit I was against Boucher most the time this season, but he has really turned it on the last few games. He has just been flat out amazing.

imagine what his numbers would be if you threw out the 4 goal game against the Rangers. Boucher needs to stay hot for them to win tonight, as I have a feeling NJ is going to come out tonight with a lot of desperation.

I’m pretty sure Parent will be in for Bartulis. IMO, he can’t be worse than Bartulis was, can he?

According to The Daily News, Parent is in for Krajicek.

hmmm, not sure I agree with this, at least Krajicek has some playoff experience and I thought Bartulis looked much worse, but neither played great.

Does it also say he’ll be paired with Timonen? You know, until the 3rd period.

Speculation time: Parent takes Bartulis’ PK time, but also gets more than the 1:28 Oskars got.

Just cause I’m curious (and a procrastinator), here are the Fenwick (Shots + Missed Shots) and Corsi (Fenwick + Blocked Shots) for the defensive pairs:

Coburn and Bartulis: 42 games, .480 F, .475 C
Coburn and Parent: 30 games, .477 F, .481 C
Timonen and Krajicek: 27 games, .484 F, .472 C
Timonen and Parent have way too small a sample size to even post.

Really, I don’t see much of a difference there at all. Hopefully Timonen and Parent play a lot better than that.

I really like Kimmo and Parent over the last two seasons they should have been playing together the whole time. Coburn was expected to graduate to the point of being able to carrying the 3rd pairing, that part didn’t go quite as planned.

by chrislanci on Apr 16, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was just thinking about this last night. The team would have loved to have Kimmo/Coburn be the second pairing, but Parent being able to carry the third pairing of him and Syvret.

Unfortunately, Parent/Syvret wasn’t working, and neither was Parent/Bartulis. Further, Kimmo/Coburn wasn’t working either.

The team expected Coburn to be a #4. He wasn’t.
The team expected Parent to be a #5. He wasn’t.
The team expected Syvret to be a #6. He wasn’t. Then he was, but got hurt.

So instead, Coburn is a #5, Parent is a #6, Bartulis is #7, Syvret is a #8. They’re trying to see who out of Bartulis, Parent, and Krajicek can play well enough to be a #5 and have Kimmo elevate their play to a #4.

At the start of the season I wanted Parent/Kimmo, Pronger/Coburn, and Carle whoever. Carle stepped up Coburn dropped down but Coburn could be a really good 5th D-Man but for whatever reason he really sucked this year. He wasn’t a guy I expected to need “veteran protection”.

by chrislanci on Apr 16, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. The problem though is that neither Coburn nor Parent stepped up. With both of them RFA after the season, I think one of them needs to come up big in the playoffs or else Coburn has to be let go. And then the team needs to sign a #4 and a #5.

I rather keep them both on the cheap real cheap, like 2.0 – 2.5 million total and still go after a #4 UFA. If not I would trade Coburn in a deal for one of those RFA goalies and keep Parent. Marshall and Bourdon are not believed to be NHL ready for next year are they ??

by chrislanci on Apr 16, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not opposed to keeping both, but I’m extremely disenchanted with Coburn.

From Tim McManus, neither Marshall nor Bourdon are NHL ready.

Question for Orlando experts...

Anyone know a place at Disney that has Center Ice. I have to fly down there tonight for a wedding this weekend, and I already sold my Game 3 ticket for this wedding, so I really rather not go down there harboring this much contempt for the Bride and Groom.

by DLJr on Apr 16, 2010 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

I live down in West Palm Beach, but I have a good friend that lives in Orlando. The Orlando Ale House, or the Miller Ale House should have it on since they get Center Ice. Or you can just ask them and they will usually turn it on. Plus there usually isn’t a ton of people there either. Good Luck.

by DLJr on Apr 16, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

You could go to pretty much any bar/grill in the Orlando area that has a bunch of TV’s and they will be able to put the game on. Surprisingly, FL is pretty progressive as far as what sports are available and plus because Orlando is mostly northern tourists anyway, they might already have the hockey games on wherever you go. I wouldn’t worry so much about finding a place to watch the game, but rather as you noted convincing your girlfriend that you want to spend your friday night in FL where the weather is beautiful, indoors watching a hockey game. So to that, i say, good luck sir.

Randy Jones had a brutal giveaway that led to the GWG last night. I know he’s a former Flyer and one or two people around here have some strong feelings about him. Thought I’d see if anyone else caught that play.

I was at the Phillies game Wednesday night and didn’t watch the Flyers until today.

What is there that needs to be said? The Flyers still don’t have a 3rd defensive pairing, which forced 4 dmen to play 101 of the 120 minutes. This has been a problem since the day they waived Randy Jones, Homer never adequately addressed it, and its going to be increasingly problematic the more they play.

The coach fixed most of the problems I’ve been talking about all year: they finally play a trap and they finally have Boucher in net.

so what happened to the Cap defense last night or was it really Theodore’s fault?

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on Apr 16, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Theo played awesome and our D wasn’t even that bad. 2 goals in regulation and one in OT. Not a ton of quality chances. The first goal was all on Tom Poti and his fucking inability to clear the puck on the PK. I’ve never seen anything like it. The second goal was a combined lazy effort by our stars. The third goal was a classic trap goal; they set up in the neutral zone, waited for us to try a long pass, picked it off, and came in and scored.

We dominated them physically and were never really pinned in our own end. I’m not really worried that we’ll lose the series, but it’s going to be longer and harder (oooooh yeah) than it should be. Halak played real well and our top two lines played like finesse pussies that are unwilling to play a simple game. When the bottom two lines are the best, it’s a problem. My biggest problem is the utter lack of killer instinct on the team.

Tom Poti will never win a Cup.

by Rob Parker on Apr 16, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but I watched most of the game and I thought that Theo was a little shaky on the OT winner. It was almost as if he expected Plekanec to pass to the winger on the left. That can’t be good for his confidence, knowing Boudreau is so quick to yank goalies.

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on Apr 16, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh. Theo has been good for so long and had enough big saves last night that he’s safe. Plekanec is MON’s best scorer and he was given and open slap shot from between the hash marks. You would like the goalie to save that, but you can’t get a much better prime scoring chance. The D really misplayed that and it was a nice shot.

I should also note that I was at the game so I missed TV replays and I may or may not have had some adult beverages.

Tom Poti will never win a Cup.

by Rob Parker on Apr 16, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the broadcasters immediately blamed Corvo for giving him too much room. I don’t think Theo is in any trouble.
