Here’s what I don’t get. You play Hartnell over Leino. Fine, whatever. You think better of it, and drop him to the third line mid-game. Okay, fine. But then you put him out on the power play late in the game. He’s worthless. You follow that up by putting him out on the ice with the goalie pulled?
How many chances can this guy get before you realize he just isn’t performing??

by JerseyDriver on Apr 16, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, but I have no problem playing him over Leino. That part I understand. If you really want Leino in, you can take a Powe or Asham out, give the third line some scoring.
But you don’t play him in these “must score” situations. When he can’t do anything.

by Geoff Detweiler on Apr 16, 2010 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I can’t see that. Powe and Asham are contributing where they need to. And the lines were great, the 28-21-45 line was getting good chances every shift, and he breaks it up to try and fix the 17-19-48 line in my opinion since 19 was a problem (and a little of Carter recovering). If Ville is playing on the 17-48 line to begin with, there’s no problem. We’ve seen Ville play, and he has been getting it done for the most part. Hartnell hasn’t. On ANY line.
by JerseyDriver on Apr 16, 2010 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions
See, here’s my problem. I don’t disagree with anything you said. At all.
I just have a really hard time sitting Scott Hartnell. Trust me, he’s currently on my shit list and I love pointing out how bad he sucks (getting outshot 14-1 in Game 1, are you SERIOUS?!) right now. But Leino has 11 career goals in 75 career NHL games. Hartnell has 14 goals in 81 games this year. How is that an improvement?
Yeah, Hartnell sucks… but Leino isn’t this messiah that is waiting for a chance. Detroit gave up on him. We got him for cheap. But that doesn’t mean he needs to play. Especially not over Scott Hartnell.
I don’t think I enunciated my point clearly enough, but I love screaming at how bad Hartnell sucks and I’d definitely keep him on the third or fourth line, but I wouldn’t bench him.

Point taken. I would bench him just so it might get something across to him. I think he still has the heart most of the time, but I just can’t see how not having him on the ice for a game hurts that much. The only thing he did well tonight was NOT take a bad penalty—two games in a row now??—and how much is that saying? If he sits and comes back better, then you’re better for it.
by JerseyDriver on Apr 16, 2010 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Still, the game was tight and I think he wanted hartnell out there to throw the body and less to shoot the puck
There are people who do that better, like Dan Carcillo. Or Ian Laperriere.

by Ivan Monteiro Prado on Apr 16, 2010 10:13 PM EDT reply actions
I would not say that just yet. The Devils still have to steal home ice advantage away from us. This series is not over by a long shot.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
It’s definitely not over at all.
The Devils used home ice advantage to their… advantage. They got the matchups they wanted and got the breaks. That’s not to say everything was lucky, because they worked hard. But so did the Flyers.
As long as the Flyers continue to show restraint and let the Devils run around and take stupid penalties, the Flyers will win the series. They’ve got to solidify the trap and get pucks out of their own end. If they do that, score for average on the power play, and not have Parent and Bartulis on the ice at the same time, they’ll be okay.

by keeperdude2209 on Apr 16, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I would.
I knew the Flyers would lose before the game even started. I just had that feeling, so I wasn’t as disappointed when it happened.
I’d be more worried if they were dominated the entire game through. The Devils had the edge in play, but for the most part the Flyers were right there with them. This is anyone’s series.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
really guys? Leino for Hartnell?
If anyone needs to sit, its Carter. He can’t do shit. It is obvious he’s not healed, and it is hurting the team (as I type this in my Carter jersey).
But if you won’t sit Carter, who do you sit? There’s not a single player right now that should sit for Leino, unless you want to dress 5 D-men.
by keeperdude2209 on Apr 16, 2010 10:24 PM EDT reply actions
No. You sit Hartnell. Any other player on this team would have scored that goal to tie it back up.
by StarbladeMKIII on Apr 16, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
You can’t say that. He got beat to the puck, shit happens. Sure he’s been playing poorly this season but the Flyers did not lose this game because of Hartnell.
However, I do agree that he should at least be benched a game or two, maybe that way he comes back playing smarter/better.
I really feel that if you had put anyone else in that situation with the rebound and that wide open net, they would have put it in. When I saw who was out there for that I just about lost it. No way should he have been on the ice int hat situation. Not at all.
Trust me. I used to really like the guy. But a spade is a spade, and a player playing like shit is just that. He needs to ride the pine ASAP.
by StarbladeMKIII on Apr 16, 2010 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I see your point, once I saw the puck not go in and saw that Hartnell was near it I just said to myself “figures.”
If Leino is healthy they should scratch Hartnell next game.
The time to bench Hartnell was near the end of the season. But it’s too late now.
You can’t bench him now. And you can’t use the playoffs to get an injured guy back into shape.
by keeperdude2209 on Apr 16, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t agree with those who say Hartnell should have buried that shot (if that is what anyone is saying) or that anybody else would have scored on that shot.
But what I have been thinking is, your comment here:
He got beat to the puckis what was bothering me. I only saw it once, so I may be wrong, but it sure didn’t look like he was going hard to the net. Yeah, he was skating toward the net, but that’s not his job. Juicy rebound, and he wasn’t in position to get it. That’s on him.
And oh, his awesome mini-breakaway in the second period where he didn’t even get a shot off… yeah, I was screaming.

Carter has been off the ice for three weeks and is still getting back into game shape. He’ll be fine.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
do you have any idea how deconditioned a speed endurance athlete becomes in 3 weeks….quite a bit. THis type of endurance is much harder to build than aerobic endurance because you need more recovery time….at this point he’s a liability on the ice. he’s playing like shit
I understand that, which is why I’m glad he’s been back in action for a week already. Under the original timetable, he’d be coming back on Sunday night. He’s thus had a week to get back into things, which is good.
Does he need to be better? Sure. I expect a lot of jump in his step on Sunday.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I agree, but would you rather have him back for a week already, or not even have him play a game until Sunday?
I’d rather have the former. He will get better as the series goes on, as opposed to maybe kinda just getting back into game shape in time to hit the golf course.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
what i am saying is not to play him at all or at least play him in only in the least critical stituations….just in case we get to the next round….gioux can handle the load. But no way does he go with JVR….he has gone from a 40 game load in college to an 80 plus game load in the NHL….that’s really bad….I could write a novella on how dumb that is
I would rather bring Krajieck in as a winger over Hartnell. I know it’s cliche to dump on the guy, but I truly feel he is absolutely useless out there. I cringe when he’s on the ice. He is simply a liability out there.
but I’ve seen comments about Briere and Hartnell sucking. Give the guys a center with more than one foot.
by keeperdude2209 on Apr 16, 2010 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Hartnell has had a center with more than one foot for the entire season and he still sucked. Hartnell has to be benched. Briere on the other hand is still pretty useful.
I understand…I should have combined my posts. He should have benched him earlier, before the playoffs. Now is not the time. 1-1 going back to Philly. It’s not the end of the world. We played well, and almost took 2 in Jersey.
by keeperdude2209 on Apr 16, 2010 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions
No, now IS the time. The longer he’s on the ice, the more of a liability he becomes. If he’s not dressed, he has no opportunity to be out there when he shouldn’t be.
