Game 78, Preview and Game Thread: Montreal Canadiens at Philadelphia Flyers

This is the open game thread.
Get the Montreal perspective at Habs Eyes On The Prize

This is the biggest game of the year to date. Tied with Montreal at 82 points and teetering on the brink of missing the playoffs, the Flyers absolutely need a win tonight against Montreal.
The orange and black are struggling mightily, as evidenced by last night's outcome and the necessity of signing Sebastien Caron, but if there's one thing to take solace in right now, it's that the other teams in the playoff race are struggling just as much. Montreal is one of those teams.
The bleu, blanc et rouge haven't played much over the last week or so, but they've lost each of their last two games, including one to the lowly Hurricanes. They have injuries, they lack confidence, and they have a minor goaltending controversy. Sound familiar?
Peter Laviolette will start Brian Boucher tonight, and he's going to sit Riley Cote. Things are tough for Riles these days -- not playing, can't win a fight when he does play. Now, he's lost his forward position to a stay at home defenseman. Oskars Bartulis will play on the fourth-line wing tonight. Ryan Parent is back on defense.
Atlanta and Boston are idle tonight, but the Flyers can put a much needed four-point gap between themselves and the 9th-place Thrashers with a win tonight. A loss, and well, things get really dicey.
After the jump, lineups, questions to answer and our in-game thread.
Flyers Line Combinations
van Riemsdyk – Richards – Giroux
Gagne – Briere – Leino
Hartnell – Powe – Asham
Bartulis – Laperriere – Betts
Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Krajicek
Parent - Coburn
Montreal Line Combinations
Cammalleri - Plekanec - A. Kostitsyn
Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta
Moen - Moore - S. Kostitsyn
Bergeron - Lapierre - Pyatt
Markov - O`Byrne
Hamrlik - Spacek
Gill - Gorges
Starting Goaltenders
Questions to Answer
- Are the Flyers in 6th place at the end of the night?
- Do we see Sebastien Caron in goal at all tonight?
- How does Bartulis look as a forward (lol)?
- Briere has been successful against Montreal all year, including a hat trick last time out. Does that continue tonight?
- There were some fireworks between these two teams back before the Olympics. Any remnants now that the stakes are higher?
Join us for the conversation here tonight. LET'S GO FLYERS!

You know what to expect from Boucher-crap. The team plays bad with him in the net. They played waaay better after he got pulled. I’d take a chance on the other guy. Boucher=bad team chemistry
I agree to an extent, but Caron is an unknown and Boucher is a better goalie.
There’s a reason Boucher has an NHL deal and there’s a reason Caron was playing in Switzerland.

I feel like Hartnell’s “energy” is a disadvantage. He just skates around and doesn’t really do that much. He needs to cycle the puck with more of a purpose, if that makes sense.

Not in the least.
Puck carrier behind the net to Boosh’s right, unmarked so Boosh had to hug the post on that side.
He passed the puck across the front of the net to to opposite goalpost where aother unmarked man tapped it in.
Two goalies couldn’t have stopped that puck.

Yay, I go out for dinner and come back and the Flyers still suck. Consistency at its best!
@Mitchman88 on Twitter
they’ve looked really good tonight actually

Seriously. This game could easily be 5-1 Flyers if not for Halak.

Ya, I saw that rebound that popped up over Halak and almost into the net.
Of course, a game when the Flyers play well, Halack becomes Luongo!

I wish they just played like shit tonight. It would be a lot easier to be mad about this loss.

That was a great effort, but that last minute was pretty bad.

The same thing kind of happened last night too…. We were moving really slowly after they pulled Duschesne at the end, there was no urgency with the empty net

Getting shut out at home against another team fighting for their playoff lives… Embarrasing.

There was nothing embarrassing about that loss.

Do tell….what was so embarrassing about that game?
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
1-0 Montreal. If I had a dollar for every time I heard that we ran into a hot fucking goalie, I would buy the Flyers. I don’t fucking care. Put the fucking puck in the net.
Losing 1-0 to a good team with a good goalie is not embarrassing. Sometimes you can do everything you possibly can to put the puck in the net and the goalie just proves to be too much. Tonight was one of those nights.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
Sorry, I disagree. I’ve heard it too many times. Goalies steal games from us, blah, blah, blah….put the fucking puck in the net. If it was an anamoly, fine, I’d get over it, but it’s not. We make random goaliles look like Terry Sawchuk. We simply can’t score fucking goals.
But Jaroslav Halak is not a random goalie like Khudobin or Jeff Deslauriers. The guy can play the position. If the Flyers were anemic and not generating opportunities, then that’s one thing, but they were creating chances and taking shots this game, especially in the 3rd period, and Halak stoned all of them.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".
Not to speak for sandiego but I think what he meant was tonight was a battle between two teams that are fighting for their lives and our team didn’t get it done. They weren’t embarassed on the ice as in the score but they didn’t get it done against what should be an inferior team. Should be?

I’m outing myself as the guy who suggested the Magic Number thing on the sidebar. For the love of God, man, take it down. I should have known better than to jinx us like that.

They’re not going to help us now, but we need something to get us through the off season. Besides, the guys have to make their last impressions if Travis brings back the whole “Grading the Flyers” thing over the summer….

seriously….baseball is my primary sport….that’s 10,000 losses. Flyers faithful get some perspective…this team has been the gem of the city despite the Phillies success
as long as we see the organization jaslearned something about why not to mortgage the future of the organization by giving away draft picks, overpaying free agents and giving them NTCs/NMCs in their contracts, everyone should be back. it’s bad now, but not completely lost/over/done to the point of turning one’s back. (GULP…..i think, anyway.)
History repeating itself
For those of you who weren’t fans during the 1990-91 season, it was kind of like this. Second place at the trade deadline, out of the playoffs a month later.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Yeah, I remember the collapse, but not necessarily the numbers. That was the first year I was old enough for my parents to let me watch most of the games all the way through, so I was a little scarred by it.

Oh, I know, my dad made sure I knew all about that stuff as a kid. Thankfully the Mets collapsed in a more epic fashion to take the stigma of the absolute worst collapse off their backs, now it’s just second worst….
by DragonGirl0583 on Apr 2, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Much like this year’s team, they would have been one-and-done in the playoffs. But after the sting of 1989-90, I was counting on 1990-91 as a bounce-back year and they choked in the end. It sucked.

No wonder I couldn’t find Oskars out there tonight, he had less than 4 and a half minutes of ice time… I was looking for him to see how he was playing on the wing, but I never saw him
I remember him on the ice in the first period, but that’s about it.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
I didn’t come in until a few minutes into the second, so I think I missed him completely. I half assumed that I was just looking down at the screen while he was out there for brief spurts, but he just wasn’t there

As much as they did play their hearts out tonight, they still lost and their playoff chances took a pretty big hit. It is just now starting to really hit me that we may really miss out on the playoffs this year. I think Clement is right; this race will come down to that home and home series between the Flyers and the Rangers to close out the year.

I would like to make an extremely ridiculous comment. No to toot my own horn but halak and plechanek were offered around like day old bread. And yours truly was very interested.
