Off-Topic Thread: Part 1
Given that there's been a lot of off-topic commentary around the site lately, I think it's probably best to start up an off-topic thread for us to confine that stuff to one spot. After all, some people come to the site and want to read nothing but hockey talk, so we probably shouldn't be bugging them with our Lion King and/or Goofy Movie discussions.
So let's try to keep them here. I'll open a new thread every 400-500 comments or so to keep load times down. Rec this so it gets pinned to the top of the list.
The Rules
All non-hockey talk, unless of course a germane conversation pops up somewhere else, like in a game thread or something. Talk about stuff like...
- movies
- food
- beer
- the Phillies
- funny stuff
- TV (like LOST, for example. DONT BE A JERK WITH SPOILERS)
- video games
- the Sixers (lol)
- politics (off limits in other threads, will allow it here. keep it civil, of course)
- music
- more Phillies
- more beer
Sound good? Hooray! Go rec this. the button is right... there... (insert down arrow here)

Goofy Movie was awesome, shame I missed that whole commentary, but I read it.
Darkwing Duck was the best Disney animated series, sucks they didn’t make a movie out of it, that could have been awesome.
Also, the Ducktales theme is now playing in your head.
This station is non-operational.
I respectfully disagree with your Darkwing Duck statement, only because I would flip it and put Ducktales first and Darkwing Duck a close second…. But Disney is on my s* list for releasing all but the final box set of each series on DVD.

Music
I’ll take this opportunity to plug one of my favorite local bands: Dr. Dog. Philly-area band that plays a great, high-energy folk-rock style. If you haven’t heard them yet, check out a couple of their albums (Easy Beat, We All Belong), and go see them at the Electric Factory next month. Their live show is incredible. Anybody have any other recommended music?
Korn, Travis, Pulp, and Nicole Atkins. Some of my favorite bands.

Savatage – they’re what’s now Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Started as a metal band in 1983, moved to prog metal over time. Current (though non-performing) lineup is Jon Oliva of Jon Oliva’s Pain, Zak Stevens of Machines of Grace and Circle II Circle, Chris Caffery of Doctor Butcher, Al Pitrelli of Megadeth (and darn near everybody else – he’s played for Alice Cooper, Asia, Sebastian Bach, and Danger Danger), Johnny Lee Middleton, and Jeff Plate of Metal Church.
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"
My engineer has been doing a lot of work with local groups recently, including Audible, Swivel Chairs, and The War On Drugs. Good bands, all.
I listen to way too much music, but recently I’ve been digging on Shearwater, Wye Oak, Title Tracks, and the latest Flaming Lips record.

In college this one kid lived across the hall from me. Every Friday after his classes were done, he’d buy a 30-pack of Miller Lite and sit in his room drinking them all afternoon, blasting Creed’s first album all the while. And his door would be open, so we could all sing “And I saaaaaiiid Ohhhhh…”

Creed definitely ranks up there as a band that you might like, but you secretly have to tell everyone you hate them, even though you know the words to every song. Nickleback also falls into this category as does John Mayer and probably Dave Matthews Band.

I’m not defending my musical tastes or lack thereof. I will agree that both Creed and Nickleback are awful, although I can’t help but humming songs like “I like your pants around your feet” or “you look so much cuter with something in your mouth”* Plus in defense, Nickleback is from my motherland, so it’s kind of like how I semi-like Crosby, but not really, except when he’s scoring the GWG to win the gold medal.
*yes, I am juvenile.

absolutely, but in furtherance of my point, it’s not like I’m actually running out and buying these guys albums. They are those guilty pleasure’s that I can’t help but hum along to when they come on the radio.
I’m sure everyone’s musical tastes are their own and other’s would probably have some criticism of them.
currently, I’m a big fan of Metallica and their Death Magnetic album. I recently (within the last year) bought Motley Crue’s Saints album and bought the rock band track pack just for the Saints of LA song. I also like GNR and the Chinese Democracy album has really grown on me. Obviously, it’s not hard to know what age/generation I’m from.

Mayer and Matthews are talented guys, especially Mayer. He’s a brilliant guitar player. I’m just not a fan of either of them, especially Dave Matthews. My current GF once asked me “Do you like Dave?” and I sidestepped the question by saying that “The first album and parts of the second were okay.” This is true – Remember Two Things and Under the Table and Dreaming have their moments, but after that…
Creed and Nickelback I legitimately cannot stand.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I agree with that entirely. My gf love Dave, but knows I think he’s a hack. He’s definitely talented, I just can’t stand him the person. Mayer is just creepy, even though he’s also incredibly talented.

I thought and still think that Creeds first album was great. Every song on there I could sing-along to. The only Nickelback song I like is Leader of Men but the rest is sharpening a pencil in my ear.
I was a big fan of the first Creed album – everything after that sucked. Torn kicks ass.
Saw them play back when the album first came out – it still ranks in the top 5 most violent mosh pits I ever participated in.

I liked “Side of a Bullet” from Nickelback, but that was mostly because it sounded like an attempt to be heavier, and it was a tribute to Dimebag Darrell. I also liked “Hold Out Your Hand,” due to the allusions. Curb and The State were their only good albums. They got too soft as they got commercial.
Honor is no substitute for victory.

I know! I really wanted to study abroad in Cape Town this semester, but ended up in Denmark. It would have been crazy to go right before the World Cup.
I watched a documentary on how the World Cup is helping Cape Town/South Africa because the children are beginning to play soccer and stay off of the streets.
The stadium looks gorgeous (in the footage anyways)! It’s right on the water.
I can’t wait either!
I saw tons of Arsenal fans in London this past weekend! Copenhagen supports Man U, but there is an Arsenal bar too! I haven’t seen any Liverpool jerseys around here though!
Oh thats sweet that you are studying abroad. I will teaching abroad in Madrid next spring for part of my student teaching. I chose Madrid mainly because I hadn’t been there yet and I want to catch a bunch of the La Liga and Champions league soccer! I am hoping Liverpool plays one of the Madrid teams in Champions League or more likely Europa so I can catch a live game.
Gosh, I have such a hard on even thinking about how amazing the World Cup is going to be in Africa!

Yeah, studying abroad is awesome!
I haven’t been to Madrid, but Spain is amazing. I’ve never heard of anyone teaching abroad for a teaching degree but that’s so cool! What subject do you want to teach?
In Pennsylvania you have to do at least half of your student teaching in the P.A. but you are allowed to do the other half in another country. I don’t think it is too common but the Education department at my college really encourages us to travel and teach in a different country which I certainly appreciate because I love to travel. And, believe it or not, it looks really good on a teacher’s resume. Not many American teachers have experience teaching abroad so it will be one of those things that hopefully helps me stand out when applying for a job.
Sadly tho, I will only be there for 7 (or so) weeks, but I am pretty excited nonetheless.
I am pretty rare in that I am one of few males that is an Elementary Education major so I get the joys (and frustrations) of teaching everything. I’ll be teaching 4th and 5th graders in Madrid.
What about you? What are you studying in Denmark?

Well… mine have mostly been very specific little niches. I’m still expanding my collections of the old school Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge series and Donald Duck series comic books. I have all of the original Comico comics from Robotech, which you might remember as a cartoon in the 80’s, although a lot of people have sadly forgotten it. I have most of a shelf dedicated to older Star Wars comics, nothing recent, but a lot from say 10-15 years ago. And then there’s the whole genre of comics I picked up from being a D&D nerd, like Nodwick and Dork Tower and such. There’s a few errant things here and there, but those are the main ones.

I’m a massive gamer geek. Got started when I was about 12 when my parents bought some TSR novels for me, and a few weeks later I found out my neighbor across the street had the first edition AD&D manuals. Moved from there to second edition, then to Palladium’s stuff before they turned into utter drek, then bounced to Dream Pod 9 (Heavy Gear & Jovian Chronicles), along with Deadlands, Castle Falkenstein, GURPS, and Legend of Five Rings.
…um, yeah, I didn’t realize I had that many games. Holy schnikies.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
TMNT started as an amazing comic. Then the kiddy show ruined it.
If you can find the collection, I just finished reading Magneto: Testament. It’s his early history, based off actual Holocaust survivor accounts.
I’m also a fan of Kurt Busiek’s Astro City. I like how it looks at how superheroes affect normal people.
Tim Eldred’s Grease Monkey was another one I liked. Good humor, and sympathetic characters.

Beer
Racer 5 IPA, Bells Two Hearted Ale, Stone IPA
Stone Ruination IIPA, Three Floyds Alpha King Pale Ale
Victory Hop Devil
Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale, Riverhorse Hop Hazard, Port Hop 15, and the best of them all: Russian River Blind Pig.
Stone sells me on their bottle right ups alone, but it helps they have great beer too. As far as US goes, Stone, Dogfish Head, Allagash, and Lost Abbey have to be my personal favorites, with an honorable mention to Rogue. I feel like Lost Abbey reads my mind every time I try something new from them. Clearly you are a hop fanatic with your choices.
Big time hop head. Where are you getting the Lost Abby? Traveling to CA? I’m guessing from them you are into some great Belgians.
Yeah I definitely love my Belgians (I have been lucky enough to visit the country and their breweries on several occasions), although nothing says Spring to me like a nicely hopped beer. The Beer Yard in Wayne carries most everything good, so they usually keep me in good supply. Also, I need to head to Pinocchio’s in Media (considering I live in walking distance), they opened up a beer yard which I hear has quite the selection. And I can’t believe I left out Russian River.
I hear the Beer Yard has an incredible selection. I’m too far (Northern VA) but I may have to make a Victory Brewing / Beer Yard road trip some time. I have never seen anything from Russian River down here. And if I did ever see Double Trouble on Tap… Danger.
Incredible!
My family is in Wayne. I had no idea that is there. I can’t wait to go check it out. I love off-topic threads.
It’s behind the Starbucks, it’s something you could drive by a million times and never know it was there.
I’ve driven past it a million times (I live in Narberth). always wondered why the location, its literally behind a starbucks. Hell, I swear the sign even say its behind the starbucks haha.
"Sugah n' rainbows"
"We will steal the show, jolly Rogers go, we are wolves of the sea."
That round starbucks?
There was always a beer store there, but it sold the same old crap, at least I thought it did.
If by old crap you mean an extensive list of Belgians (including several quality traditional lambics) and American Micro’s, then yes, yes it is the store that sells the same old crap. It’s right behind the Starbucks as mentioned above.
I don’t think I’ve been there in a good 5 years. I guess it has changed a little. I remember an overwhelming amount of coors light and a poster to match last time I was there.
It has honestly been the same since I’ve been going there. I’m sure they have that kind of stuff, I just pretty much go to one isle, or email Matt in advance for what I want and go pick it up without walking around the store (not that it’s very big)…so maybe I don’t notice anything I’m not there for.
I think I’m off tonight to check Pinocchio’s Beer Garden out for an IPA actually, I heard they got in Founders Double Trouble and I’ve been wanting to try that. Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to bring home a bottle of it yet, and I’ve wanted to avoid drinking it when I’m out having a few different beers as I hear it can be a palate killer.
Anyone tried Ayerbacher Brewery’s stuff? Insanity is a great porter.
And for best name and label, has to be Arrogant Bastard.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
Anything Stone makes pretty much has the most brilliant right ups on their labels. Give Ruination a read next time you see a bottle.
I thought I could write the Time on Ice Game 4 story while watching Deadliest Catch. But that show just effing sucks me in. I definitely should have known better, but it’s been a year since I’ve watched the show. I forgot just how awesome it is.

Music
So since I haven’t seen anyone post it yet, RIP Guru. Real rap loses another one.
And what they call rap today isn’t rap, its the shittiest shit ever. It’s what Warrant and Nelson were to Heavy Metal in the late 80s before Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana came out and changed the game.

Absolutely. Obviously I haven’t been keeping up with his health, but I had no idea he was in such poor shape.
Regarding today’s stuff, I think Public Enemy and NWA really changed the game. Unfortunately, fewer people followed PE – using hip hop as an impetus for social change – and latched onto the sex/violence/money of NWA. I think both groups had something to say, but those who followed latched onto the easier aspects of their work and quite literally took it to the bank. The same thing happened with punk. I only mention it because,as different as those two kinds of music may seem, their beginnings and subsequent trajectories are very much intertwined.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I feel you. I listened to Fear Of A Black Planet last week and the lyrics are still so meaningful today. NWA…. I understand why Straight Outta Compton was so important but if I could go back into time, that would have never been released.
Unpopular Opinion: I don’t like Jay-Z.

I think Jay-Z is a talented rapper, but I’m not a huge fan myself. The “work” of his I listen to most is The Slack Album, which may or may not still be available online. It is a (somehow) very functional mash-up of The Black Album and Pavement’s Slanted and Enchanted.
Aside from older stuff like PE, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Beastie Boys, most of the hip hop I listen to is off the beaten path – MF Doom and all of his aliases, Kool Keith, etc.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Have you heard Danger Mouse’s Gray Album? The mash up of The Black Album and the Beatles’ White Album. I really like it. Hard to find online without finding a virus. Impossible to find anywhere else though.
I’ve never heard this one, like you said it’s hard to get but I’ve heard the Black & Blue Album which is Jay-Z’s Black album with Weezer’s Blue Album…its actually pretty sweet.

Really?
It’s what Warrant and Nelson were to Heavy Metal in the late 80s before Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana came out and changed the game.
I think that’s some pretty light heavy metal. I love Pearl Jam, and have respect for the other two, but never would I put them in the same category as Pantera, Sepultura or Danzig (some of the stuff I grew up on).

It’s so simple. He just needs to be popping out of a trash can, stick raised in a cross-check position.

However, I do think that If the Sharks get over their fear of playing in Late May, I think they will be playing in early June for years to come.
Thats not something Im looking forward to.
Therefore Im rooting for the Sharks, but I cant wish them success
bread. butter. cheese. VICTORY!
I hated Detroit before the lockout. Since then, I have nothing but respect. They’re able to be this good for this long in a salary cap era. No hatred, just respect.
But I agree with DG – Boucher fans get my respect. I think I’m just hoping it’s a good, long series.

I can still have my childhood hatred of them and still respect them at the same time. It’s not mutually exclusive for me, but that may not be the case for everyone.

I try so hard to hate the Red Wings but with guys like Zetterberg and Datsyuk its so hard. Just respect honestly…

The fact that I hate the Wings and Shark fans love Boosh almost as much as Geoff, I am definitely pulling for San Jose.

Did my eyes just see right? Did Joe Thornton just score a goal to give his team the lead in the 3rd period?

haha, yeah, but with a big assist to Niklas Lidstrom’s stick. Seriously, will a broken stick have to lose the Cup before players realize these things are far too weak??

Even without the help of Lidstrom’s stick, it would have been completely natural for Thornton to whiff on the shot.

I didn’t see it, but it happened in the final 5mins and he’s not a superstar. So probably

Possibly. And if he gets another game misconduct for either boarding or checking from behind during the next 2 playoff rounds, it’s an automatic 1 game suspension. But that’s only what’s written; who knows what will actually happen.

I know, I’m only 50% there… I’ve got the rulebook memorization thing down, but even my tarot cards are completely inept at predicting Campbell’s decisions with accuracy. Sometimes he defies both the cards AND the DGB flowchart, and I’m afraid that trying any other fortune telling methods could be epically dangerous in some way. So I haven’t found a completely accurate prediction method yet.

HalakCamalariFTW!
Fixed that for ya! He was amazing again tonight. Actually, Habs defense needs to take A LOT of credit. Pens had 40 some shots but most of them were from outside and at bad angles. Halak was great but he didn’t really even have to bail them out. Habs’ defense stifled the Pens attack ALL night. It was beautiful. In related news, that PK Subban kid is gonna be good. He looked great out there. Not phased at all.

Also, Pierre McGuire asked Subban after the game if he was star shocked and staring over at Crosby when he was on the bench. Subban kinda gave a funny look and said no and reiterated that this is playoff hockey. I loved it. McGuire is such a little weasel.

Not to mention that he was visibly frustrated tonight.
At one point Crosby’s stick broke and instead of dropping it he skated with it and then threw it full force down the ice. The CBC announcers were like “for anyone else that would be a penalty, but its Crosby…”. Hilarious!

I’m still watching the Phillies game. We just put up an 8-run inning on Santana and chased him in the 4th. Moyer drew a bases loaded walk, Victorino followed it up with a grand slam, Polanco got a single, Utley launched a 2-run shot……it’s all been awesome.

It was Stewie and Brian trapped alone in a bank vault. No cut-aways, no crazy irreverent humor, no ridiculous cameos or allusions…just them in a vault talking. I’m fine with that, that’s cool I think it’s awesome that they’d do it but it just sucked. I laughed like twice and it was a 40 minute episode. Seriously it made my day even crappier.

IMO, Family guy was great when it got canceled, then Fox brought it back, and it sucked since then. Stewie stopped being evil and just got gay. Brian went from a funny taking dog to a liberal d-bag(note: im a Dem, but hes way over the top). Peter went from being somewhat stupid and funny to just plain Stupid. And they basically cut the other characters outta the show. Between the simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Futerama, Futerama was the only one that I wish didnt go off the air yet, but maybe thats a good thing looking at how awful the other shows got.

New episodes of Futurama on Comedy Central are coming soon. Woot!
Hopefully, they won’t be as bad.

I heard that the cast isn’t even coming back though. Futurama w/ no Billy, Katie or John would be just a travesty.

and thats not just Family guys fault either too. Back in the 90’s, Cartoons could be funny without being overly offensive. Like Animaniacs, who combined slap stick, one liners, and education into the series. Now a days, the only cartoons that get good ratings are shows like Family guy, which says a lot the generation after me. And Family guy spends way too much time with those stupid ass cut away’s. Its not funny, its just lazy when you need to spend 5 minutes of an episode to go over something that has no point to the rest of the story, or teaches some history lesson that most kids learn in 5th grade. Again, I know it does well, and the old episodes where really good, but I just cant watch it like I used to.
If you want a good show to watch, look online and watch a show called “corner gas”. Its really funny.

Animaniacs was the shit! That show was so smart but kids didn’t know it. Hell I didn’t until I re-watched the first two seasons on dvd at college. So good!
I never minded the cut-aways, I think they’re funny and I enjoy that type of humor. But anymore the episodes are line, cutaway, line, cutaway, cutaway in cutaway, line line cutaway. I have all the dvds and love the show but this season has been lackluster
I’ve seen some Corner Gas shows and that was a fun show.

And as brilliant as that sign is, the girl made one of the oldest grammatical errors in the book:
It should read “IT’S awkward,” as in “It is awkward that my boyfriend loves you.” “Its” is a possessive pronoun.
Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead.
And conversely, it should be hearts, not heart’s, because that one’s not possessive.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I think that is permissible, actually – to have ‘s after a symbol. I’ll have to look it up.
Do you see what happens when you teach some grammar in a class? This is what happens Larry.
Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead.
