haha, it’s all Shaun and my fault… The Corsi/Fenwick story spiraled into a love fest about Aaron Sorkin, went through the Lion King, A Goofy Movie, and all the way through to just about everything you could imagine.

I don't mind the lion king discussion.
Nobody does. Just don’t talk about mufasa’s death again. please.
I mind missing the Lion King discussion.
So, that means a good portion of us on here are 19-24? LK dominates our age group.
Pretty sure. There was a large discussion about everyone’s ages, but it was also midnight, so I think it’s safe to say the only people awake at that time AND on this site are that age group. Just like Conan’s viewership.

I love Richie's comeback to Lappy (from the Delco article on Timonen):
It all started after the game Sunday, when Laperriere said Richards has the "worst body in hockey," and compared it to that of Laperriere’s 8-year-old son.
Richards caught wind of it and made fun of Laperriere’s English during a radio interview Monday morning, saying nobody can understand Laperriere — whether he has his teeth in or not.
But Richards carried it over to post-practice.
When asked if he was starting to work on that 8-year-old frame, Richards said he told Laperriere that he learned when he was 16-years old that "you can’t bench press the puck into the net."
"When you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe"
They complained that he punched Zach Parise(?) during a scrum. Once.
There’s something about NY/NJ fans and “Honor”. Not sure.

Not sure. But I found it hysterical that in the same paragraph they called Richards the “Honorless Captain”, they brushed off Kovalchuk’s two-handed slash to the back of his leg like it was nothing. Because, THAT isn’t honorless at all.

YES, in Game 2. I was there and didn’t see the replay, but it also looked to me as if Richards stepped up to Kovalchuk and Ilya backed down. Not surprising, of course, but you know.

yeah, that’s what I remember to. It was certainly a cheap shot and I believe Richards then asked Ilya to drop the gloves at which point he skated away because he knew that he’s not a fighter and Richards would kick his ass, but whatever.
Personally, I found Boucher shoving Parise’s head into the ice during Game 3 to be much more agregious.

you’ll have to excuse the intrusion, but i’ve been really curious about all the focus on whats going on over at in lou we trust the past week or so.
aren’t these both fan blogs? won’t we flyers fans naturally be outraged/disdainful/embittered by what they say over there? and vice versa? isn’t this why one doesn’t go to a devils bar to watch a flyers game?
seems like a lot of wasted energy.
I think it stems from last year’s playoffs where we actually participated in game threads with the folks from Pensburgh, Frank and I sent trash-talk-laden “letters” back and forth to each other throughout the series, etc. They were all very respectful and it was a generally awesome time. I think those of us who were there for that a year ago are kind of taken aback by the way ILWT has acted towards our site in this series.
Personally, I got ticked off because shots were taken at me from over there. Generally speaking, I really don’t care about what they have to say about our team — although I certainly enjoy the chance to read their perspective on things.

yeah, i followed that a bit – regardless of the truth of those statements or not, wouldn’t you expect a rival fanbase (bear in mind that those who spend time blogging on their team are probably fairly ardent) to react pretty violently to folks questioning their commitment to their club? while it seems travis was correct in his assessments, i can’t fault them for being defensive.
Not at all. I completely understand and would have reacted similarly – if Philly wasn’t obviously passionate. But there’s a difference between saying Travis is wrong and defending your team and what they did. Also, never did he say Devils fans aren’t passionate, just that there aren’t many of them.

certainly Geoff, but wouldn’t you say there is also a fine line between being passionate about your team, while being realistic vs. being a complete homer.
I mean, this is maybe a backhanded compliment, but there are certainly a fair number of “homer” Flyer fans around (i’ve been a part of a few sites), but here at least you guys seem to be rational about your assessments. Maybe I’m biased, but I also feel free to criticize the Flyers a fair bit, especially at HO.
Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

Oh, certainly. Every fanbase has “homers”. I’m a pretty big homer myself, but I also think (this is a generalization now) that Philly fans are a lot less susceptible to blind support because they’re so hard on their own players. Obviously, this could be just as unrealistic, but breaking realistic v. homer down into support v. criticism is probably not the best analysis.

It depends on the definition of homer. I love our guys, but I’m willing to admit none of them are the best at their position in the NHL (though [Assistant] Captain Elbows is close). I’ve known guys that were homerish enough to claim that Richie was the best forward in the NHL. I think he’s good, but not quite a Malkin or Ovechkin.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Well, certainly. That would be blind homerism to me. Unless of course someone doubts that Oskars isn’t winning the Norris this year. Cause then they’re just dumb.

I don’t really buy that though. The guys from over at Japer’s come over here and usually admit to the reality of the situation (ie. that a lot of Caps fans at the moment are bandwagoners)
I also know a few bloggers from other teams and generally if you have a bit of hockey knowledge, you ditch the “kool-aid” act and are able to assess your teams strengths and weaknesses, rationally. This doesn’t seem to be the case in this situation.

i suppose i can agree – i thought travis’s attitude was FAR more tasteful than the guys with their names on the bottom of the page over at in lou we trust.
i’ll maintain that its tough to expect much more out of many commenters though – the line between “quantity of fans” and “quality of fans” is a fairly thin one when embroiled in a playoff battle.
Oh, yeah. Commenters are an entirely different breed. Even Pensburgh had more than a few that we didn’t get a long with. I’m specifically mentioning the relationship between the, I guess we’ll call them editorial staffs, of the opposing sites.

Devils fans have no right to talk about honor. Especially if they know anything about their team’s history. Scott Stevens and Claude Lemieux two extremely important players in that teams history were not really known for their honorable play. The Devils fans are just upset that there mostly American and European squad is having trouble competing with our Canadian dominated roster. Canadian’s live and die for Lord Stanley’s cup when it comes to playoff time they will literally put their bodies on the line for a chance at hockey immortality. There is a reason only 2 European Goalies, and 2 non-Canadian captains won the cup in the history of the NHL. Blame Canada.

The upset potential is only at 30%. That surprises me. The fact that Boston has the best chance of an upset doesn’t surprise me at all.
I remember saying on BSH radio, that I didn’t think the Sabres would go far just because I didn’t think Miller would be able to steal a whole seven game series and Buffalo is seriously hurting right now in the injury department.

At the same time, Miller should be able to hold the league-worst offense down. Shouldn’t really have to steal the series. If Buffalo could score more than a goal or two per game, that series would be over.

true, but Miller played out of his mind for the start of the season, so their seeding is probably higher than how good the actual team is. On the flip side, Boston has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent goaltending, so they are probably better than what their seeding indicates as well.

I like McNabb. I like TO. I like this: http://www.theonion.com/articles/donovan-mcnabb-id-like-to-thank-the-ungrateful-ove,17235/
It’s a little harsh, though. I feel for McNabb, I do, but he’s not the first QB to experience this in Philly and he won’t be the last. Also, not all Philly fans expected him to be the hero every week. The people who loved him just got tired of defending him all the time (like me). It’s for the best that he’s moved on.
Two best positions to play in Philadelphia: the backup QB and the backup GT.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
Judging from the Facebook statuses of my friends over the past four or five years alone, ungrateful/over-expecting/oftentimes racist is more accurate than not. I really hate Eagles fans.
Well, as a proud Eagles fan myself, I can attest that there are a lot of very vocal bad apples—but we aren’t all bad. And Facebook is a fairly narcissitic activity, so it would stand to reason many of the posts there would be lots of sound and fury signifying nothing.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
To clarify
I am an Eagles fan, I just find my fellow fans too often indefensible.
True, but many people say that about Flyers fans as well, so I’m always careful not to paint any fanbase with too broad of a brushstroke since I have fights with a Pens fan I know all too often telling him he can’t put all the Philly fans/Flyers fans in one bucket like he so often does.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
No, the problem is my brushstroke is too narrow. As in, I’ve heard McNabb called racial slurs in casual company, to my face. This is problems I’ve never had with Flyers fans, whose worse quality is being barbaric.
There are obviously these types in every fan base. Maybe I just don’t like the ugly so close to home. But the general treatment of McNabb in this city (the calls for obviously inept backups, the complaints of him smiling on the field, accusations of laziness), despite his great play, seems both rotten and Danish.
Most of my friends don’t even follow sports, so I don’t really run into this type of boorish behaviour. It’s a shame, really, but like I said: those of us who remember when Jaws was QB remember that he had some pretty equally rough treatment (with many slurs to his Polish background IIRC)—of course, the element of racism in McNabb’s tenure is indefensible, but Philadelphia on the whole has had many issues with racism over the years and was one of the last to integrate in baseball. Boston might have us beaten, but Philly and Boston are both known to be very racially charged.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
I completely agree, and I think that no way excuses anyone. These same elements may (probably) be latent in Flyers fans. I just regard the McNabb thing as ugly, and casts a light over whether I want to associate myself with that.
And let’s be clear here: people were saying similar things about the Vick signing. As much as I love dogs (more than most humans), there’s an ocean of difference between the issues at stake here.
Well, I never wanted Vick signed, but it never had anything to do with race. It had everything to do with his lack of skill at this point in his career/being too far removed from the sport.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
I mentioned this yesterday, but finally the WSJ had a small blurb about the NHL playoffs. It’s been 49 years since the opening round of the playoffs has seen every series tied at 1-1 and it’s never happened since the NHL expanded their opening round to 8 series.
I’m surprised nobody has even commented on this fact.
