Just about any Flyers fan should be absolutely ecstatic about the top seeded Caps being bounced in the first round by the #8 Canadiens. I know I am.
But please, let's show some class and try not to spread the gloating over to Japers' Rink or any other Caps site. Instead, we'll throw a party here.
So please, gloat and cackle away.

I can understand that. I ask that my wife go and do whatever wives do during games so that she doesn’t have to be around me. But I am 10000 times worse for Phillies play off games. I literally paced around the house during the 08 playoffs during the entire game. Paced and drank.

Scaring cats and dogs is nothing when Gagne scored the OT winner against NJ this season my wife was carrying our sleeping 6 month old up the steps to the crib and my outburst scared her awake into a crying fit. That did not go over well. I have since curbed my enthusiasm enough to calmly walk into the kitchen before cheering.
Um, what happens if you’re like that AND you happen to be a woman? I think it’s part of the reason my husband hates hockey…and hates to watch any kind of games with me.

He is, but he’s so calm about it. He’s totally rational, unlike me. He’s a lawyer; maybe that’s why. I was flipping OUT over that Phillies game tonight, so pissed at Ryan Madson and he’s all “It’s only April, and the Phils struggle at A T & T Park,” which is all true, but so totally grounded and not what I wanted to hear at that particular moment. I remember the final out of the WS so vividly…pacing around the room, praying for Lidge not to blow his first save…practically ready to throw up. Thank God my husband was actually on a business trip in NYC, watching it with, you guessed it, Mets fans.

Had they lost the shootout two weeks ago and gotten that ovation, I’d agree.
Last year I thought that team gave a pretty good effort and was handicapped by personnel deficiencies and injury.
I have no doubt, as of today, that the Flyers would get an ovation if they lose Game 6 to end the series, and I would expect an ovation even if they were to get swept.
It depends how the final game goes. Close, gritty effort, sure. Blowout massacre like in Game 6 vs. Buffalo in 06, not so much.

Even after blowing a 3-0 lead in Game 6 to one of your most hated rivals? I would have no problem giving a standing O to the team after losing in the ECF two years ago, but definitely not last year.

BB is going to get the AXE hard or at least he should. That loss was embarrassing. From what Fehr and Balanced was talking about the guy does’t match lines doesn’t teach defense and throws out seemingly random line combinations. With all that talent if they played like a team they should be rolling through the playoffs. Plus that is 2 game 7 losses at home in the last 3 years so much for Rock the Red home ice advantage.
Worse, even. They’re 7-9 at home in the last three years.

I didn’t realize until this morning that it was Green.
It occurred on the Caps side of the ice, so I just assumed it was some other defenseman.
I’m sure the Green apologists will claim that he was blocked off by the first attacking Canadien forward, but the fact of the matter is that he made a half-assed play at the puck, then got negated by the Montreal forward, which left a wide open chance on net by Moore.
Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com
by HockeyOutsiders on Apr 29, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions
And that any defenseman worth his salt would’ve skated in a line directly towards the near post in order to get between the puck and the Canadien, slow the play down, and minimize the scoring chance.
I’m sure he must have been thinking offense there… that the best play would be to let the Canadien skate unobstructed to the net while he turns up ice and sets himself up for a homerun pass from Varlamov.
Absolutely.
Anyone can try to stop goals, but no one bests Mike Green when it comes to scoring goals!
I was actually hoping someone could get a screen shot of Mike Green being totally eliminated as Moore skates in for the GWG
Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com
by HockeyOutsiders on Apr 29, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions
I can’t decide whether its more poetic to see Green off-balance staring at the puck that he just inexplicably skated away from

or Green looking back and making a half-hearted wave with his stick as the forward goes by him and heads in on goal unmolested

haha, sheer brilliance. That’s a Norris caliber defenseman right there!
Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com
by HockeyOutsiders on Apr 29, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions
Mario I don’t want to argue with you here but Carlson is more at fault in my opinion. Carlson enters the D-Zone side by side with Moore and just let’s me skate by him and go get the puck. That was not a 2 on 1 that was a 1 on 1 and Green eliminated his man he has no support from is partner Carlson who just skated gingerly back into the zone after he got beat off the glass pinching in.
Moore was skating along side Carlson the entire time up ice until he saw the puck just sitting there and flew past him. Moore reacted 1st and got the puck. Carlson should be back checking hard to the net drifting back into the D-Zone waiting for an outlet pass or whatever he was doing.
Carlson has played 22 NHL games. Mike Green is a Norris Trophy nominee.
I’m comfortable putting all the blame on Green. Carlson could’ve done better, but shouldn’t have had to.
Green did take himself out of the play and Varlamov is way too deep in his net and never comes out to challenge and Carlson has his head up his ass doing absolutely nothing but watching more skate in on his goalie on a breakaway. Most interesting is no other Capital despite all that team speed is coming back into the picture. It is a sad day when Mike Knuble out races his entire team on the back check. He is the only Capital in the picture who is below dots when the goal is scored. That is what you get when your team doesn’t know who to play defense and thinks they can just out score everyone to win. That will work in the SouthEast division but unfortunately for the Caps none of their division mates qualified for the post season.
It’s a sad day that Knuble is even on that team. The guy seemed to be the only one working last night. I almost felt bad for him.
Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

I can definitely agree with this assessment, however, for every Cap fan that argued that Green isn’t that bad defensively, this goal should be a slap in their face. Yes, the puck was bouncing, but Green should have made the safe play and at least coral the puck into the corner. Instead he made a half-assed play at the puck, it bounced over his stick and left a juicy turnover at the most inoportune moment.
We haven’t even touched on the fact that Green was sitting in the penalty box, while Bergeron was blasting a goal past Varlamov for the 1-0 lead the Canadiens held most of the game.

How can you write that sentence and ignore the best part.
He’s in the penalty box for cross-checking in the offensive zone. There are no words to convey the way that fact makes me feel.
Like you said, we’re talking about Mike Green. I thought it was just assumed that he took the penalty in the offensive zone. After all, that’s the only zone where Boudreau uses him, because you know…why waste his talents elsewhere.

Boudreau begins presser with deep sigh, said Knuble’s skate lightly touched pad, didn’t impede goalie
Doesn’t the coach at this point normally talk about how proud he is of his team for their accomplishments regardless of the outcome of the series, etc., not about a call on the ice?
How about what a ridiculous statement that is. There’s no controversy on that call at all. Knuble clearly is interfering with Halak’s ability to make the save, from before the shot was taken.
Its not even a measure of contact, its a measure of interference. Knuble inhibited Halak from getting his body parts in front of the shot in his crease.
And shouldn’t there be a penalty for that? Christ if that was Hartnell, a fart within 2 feet of the goalie is a 2 minute minor.
Not sure, but I would think that when you talk penalty is when the amount of contact is relevant?
And, yes, had it been Hartnell or Carcillo, no doubt that’s 2 minutes.
well, to be fair, the Canadien’s had a goal midway through the 3rd waved off as well. Don’t remember the call, but I thought it could have gone either way.

that was clearly no goal-the puck got to varlomov, varlomov secured said puck, and the montreal player pushed varlomov into the net. no goal because the play was ruled dead at the time the ref deemed the puck to be in control of varlomov.
as opposed to last year against the rangers, when biron clearly had the puck and was pushed in with it. no whistle, play is not dead, you apparently can do that if you are playing the flyers.
Eat what the monkey eats, then eat the monkey. -U.S. Navy survival guidance
These calls confuse me… when they call goalie intereference, wave off the goal, but there’s no penalty. Can’t remember who the devil was that did it, but it happened to the Flyers in this last series. I believe the devils ended up scoring on what remained of the powerplay they were on at the time, if memory serves. I remember the ref said something to the effect that the goalie was ‘unable to play his position’. Sounds like goalie interference, but yet somehow doesn’t warrant 2 minutes? It’s like the goal being waived is penalty enough? Doesn’t seem right, and I know there HAVE been penalties on similar plays (Hartnell, Carcillo).
no-it was ruled incidental contact in the crease, not goaltender interference. in this case, no goal, faceoff left dot.
i believe this is opposed to incidental contact outside of the crease-in that case the goal (should) would have stood.

LOL.
But by their criteria, Game 2 of this series might have gotten in.

I just watched the highlights again….wow did any of the caps defensemen actually lay out to block a shot?
Last night, the Caps were credited with 11 blocked shots
Six were by forwards (Morrison, Gordon, Backstrom, Laich, Belanger x2) and only five from dmen (Alzner x3, Green, and Carlson).
By contrast, 24 of Montreal’s 41 blocked shots were from Dmen.
I think the Capitals guys over at Japers need to come over here and enlighten us again on why blocked shots aren’t important again.

Going back and reading the Norris thread the Caps fans invaded in the last week is awesome.
The difference here is I don’t think Mike Green is a liability on defense. In fact, he’s an asset. Green’s faster than Pronger and a better puck handler. In an important situation, for me, its a toss up. - Chris Burton
Green has a ridiculous plus/minus, he’s obviously not coughing pucks into his own net. – Fehr and Balanced
I don’t think Green’s an elite defensive defenseman but I don’t understand the "he doesn’t play defense" meme. It’s like everyone assumes he must be Sandis Ozolinsh because he’s a good skater who carries rushes the puck through the neutral zone. – David M. Getz
And this, hands down my favorite, I saved for last:
Why such a focus on shot blocking? It’s not even strongly correlated to winning. - Fehr and Balanced

Fehr and Balanced must have coughed up a hairball when Green pretty much coughed up that 2nd goal into his own net…course, that was probably Varlamov’s fault.

Well, in Fehr’s defense, James Mirtle did a stats article on it and concluded:
Shot blocks per game comes in at -.31 in relation to both points percentage and goals for per game, meaning that there’s a small correlation between teams that are putting up goals and points and a low figure in blocking shots.
Having a lot of shot blocks has zero relationship with goals against and penalty killing percentage, and has a very, very slightly positive relationship with save percentage.

But the correlation defies the logic of shot-blocking.
look at the statistical correlation between blocks per game and a whole bunch of other common metrics. Does blocking more shots, for example, mean your team is also strong at penalty killing, preventing goals or preventing shots against?
What he should’ve been analyzing was, for instance, the correlation between blocked shots and wins for the same team.
For somewhat anecdotal instance, Montreal in that series
In their losses, they averaged 25BS and 5.6GA
In their wins, they averaged 27.5BS and 2.75GA
we really don’t even need to look at the stats, because if you watched last nights game from a relatively unbiased perspective, you would have seen Washington, swarm into the zone, take a shot on net, the shot get blocked off and the Canadiens clear the zone.
the blocked shots did two things.
1. Killed the momentum that the Capitals had entering the zone
2. Frusturated the Caps players, causing them to try to get more fancy with their passing which didn’t work either
perhaps there isn’t a huge positive correlation, but mentally, you could see the difference that the Canadien’s blocked shots had on the Capitals gameplan.

I think the point is that in order to block shots you have to be playing defense. And it returns to the Caps’ fundamental problem: when you get into a 7 game series, instead of a random tuesday night in January, the team with the better defense is going to win.
I’d be interested to see the BS totals over all 8 series though.
We know that the Flyers and Canadiens blocked the most shots and they both won.
I’m thinking possibly the only anomoly could maybe be Phoenix vs. Detroit, but I think Detroit also blocks a lot of shots.

It is also interesting to see that Tom Poti was +9 in this series. Of course, he’s not the Caps best “defenseman”.

The Caps should go out and sign Kovalchoke so all the shoot first, watch me score, who needs defense when you got a hammer and a sickle Russian “superstars” can get eliminated in the first round at the same time. That way they can save money on a group flight back to the Motherland and reduce their carbon foot print.
Umburger knows all!
Somebody needs to get him in their studios to infuse some new blood. Obviously he has a descent perspective and it would make up for VS & NBC just hyping their lame shows due to their inability to sign more sponsors than Geico. I still can’t get past them dumping Bill Clement for lame Bill Patrick, he brings no knowledge or emotion and always seems to have the deer in the head lights look. Just because you can read a script at ESPN doesn’t qualify you to run a studio show.

I was under the impression the team that eliminated was the one to do the eulogy so in this case it would be the Habs not Pensburgh.
Can't think of something catchy to say here...I suck.
Leafs’ fans did the Sens one though, didn’t they? I thought PPP did it. I think he is trying to pick fanbases that hate them all year long, even if there’s more than one possibility.

That’s correct. If the series is a big regular season rivalry, I think then the winning team eulogizes the opposing team, but in other cases where the series is not that big a rivalry it’s just the fans of a team that hate the losing team year round. Or Ryan Lambert.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
Sorry to be late to the Caps-quoting party.
I bring you:
Defense had nothing to do with why the Caps lost this series. Powerplay, adjusting to the trap, and showing up to play 60 minutes are what cost them.
Well, I mean their powerplay certainly deserves a lot of the blame, too. But he should have said “defense and powerplay are what cost them.”

Yeah, I quoted the whole thing because the context matters. However, in light of the GWG from last night, the bolded statement should be considered ludicrous in any context.
