Did anyone notice on Yahoo this gem from Kimmo Timo:

I’m surprised the guy hitting us is Savard. As far as I know he missed two months with a concussion. I thought he learned from that. I guess he didn’t. I’m sure the first chance to hit him in Game 6, we will.

So for you Boston fans, this is your head’s up. Yes we will be trying to run Savard tonight. It’s gonna be a hell of a game, although a complete blow out again by Philly wouldn’t be a problem either.

I agree with you on this one. I’d rather the Flyers spend their time and energy putting the proverbial hurting on the Bruins as a whole by winning the game.

Because you make utterly idiotic statements on here and provide absolutely no logic whatsoever to back them up.

You provide absolutely no content to our discussion of hockey at all. You display an almost blinding ignorance of hockey knowledge.

You have absolutely no concept of humor and sarcasm – you seriously just thought that someone was assembling a WSD (a Weapon of Savard Destruction) and was going to launch it at tonights game.

To sum up, you posting is like reading the second act of Flowers for Algernon….it just keeps getting more and more retarded.

I dont think there is a player on the flyers who would be that vicious. Yeah theyre physical, they want to punish people for being off guard on the ice, but to recklessly rush at someone like that with a clear intent to injure there is no chance.

The Flyers are without a doubt in his Savard’s head, just as they were in Kovalchuk’s in the Devils series.

If the Flyers were not getting to Savard, he would not have exploded on Richards. That was not a response to one questionable hit, that was a response to a series worth of teasing around and getting in Savard’s head, a place where the Flyers want to be.

With the Way Nodl is playing right now, does anybody else think he makes this team better than Powe would have? Or even dare I say it, Lappy? I know we all love Lappy, but I think Nodl is playing better now than Laperriere would have. Granted if Nodl could have just replaced Powe…

Formerly... "You don't have to be sweet, to be good"

by Ed Van Chimp on May 12, 2010 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Nodl wasn’t scoring in his opportunities in the NHL, and he was drafted as a scorer. There was also a coaching change, so I’m not sure what Laviolette thought of him, or how much he even knew of him when he got here. Nodl has worked pretty hard at his defensive game, to get more shots at the NHL level, and it has shown in these playoofs. However, I don’t think you can say he’d be better or worse than anyone until he gets more of a consistent role on the team on a longer stint with the big club. I would rather see him here than Powe, but that’s just me.

Zombie Geoff is at it again!

Geoff has clearly infiltrated the Flyers’ locker room and disguised himself as Simon Gagne.

“We’ve had a really tough year on goalies, but we always find a way to battle through it,” Gagne Geoff Detweiler said. “It’s really sad we lost Brian. In the playoffs, he was definitely our best player.”

Gagne Detweiler added that, “on the other side, we were kind of lucky. Michael came back and I think he was our best player before he got hurt. . . . In the playoffs, your best player has to be your goalie. If your goalie plays well, your team is going to play with a lot of confidence. You’re not scared to make a mistake [because] you know your goalie is good enough to make the save. Brian was able to do that for us, especially in the first series against Jersey. Without him, I don’t think we win that series anything ever again.

RE: Bruins blog

I think we’ll see a completely different Bruins squad tonight. They are going to come out fired up and attacking and I have a feeling Leighton’s going to have to make some decent saves in the first ten. If the Flyers can keep it close or score on a counter, the game could be over quickly.

Sorry, but Boston gave 2 or 3 nasty cross checks last game. The most memorable being the Giroux injury after which the whole of the TD garden chanted ‘bullshit’. The evening culminated with Savard giving multiple cross checks to the face of our captain.

No amount of begging from their fans of ‘please don’t hurt our precious player’ is going to deter whatever beating the bruins players may or may not receive. You guys have it coming to you.

The season is far from over, but it’s hard to not appriciate what the Bruins have overcome this season. Sometimes good things come to those who wait. Maybe that will be the case for the Bruins. Or maybe their new hope will be shatered. Hopefully the former will come true, but either way, the Bruins have already amazed many. They never said die.

Maybe they don’t teach spelling and grammar in Boston area schools?

Schedule

I haven’t seen much discussion of this, but if the Flyers should force a game 7 tonight, the schedule is going to seriously favor the winner of the Pens vs. Canadiens series.

If game 7 is Friday night, the 2nd round would probably start Sunday right, giving whichever team wins only a day of rest vs. the Pens/Canadiens getting at least 3 days. Count on Bettman to make sure his handpicked favorite draws a favorable 3rd round start time.

I still love that there is still a possibility that if/when we make it to the next round, we could have home ice advantage! Ha.

by Psy09 on May 12, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

absolutely. But let’s assume that Pittsburgh does indeed beat Montreal tonight. If we should complete the historic comeback, we’re going to face a Pittsburgh team in Pittsburgh, fresh off of a 3 day rest. Same goes for the Bruins. That just smacks of unfairness. Although, didn’t we have to play Pittsburgh after several back to backs this year? So I guess this is almost par for the course.

Is it possible to go an entire playoffs without boning the schedule up for a change?

Actually, I believe they already announced that it’s going to happen again in the Finals, but I’m not sure.

It could start Monday. They could start the Western Conference on Sunday.

Not much of an advantage should the Canadiens pull off the upset. They’ve played two seven-game series in a row.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on May 12, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

not so much for Montreal, but it certainly is for Pittsburgh.

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

by HockeyOutsiders on May 12, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Moreso for them, yes.

All things considered, the Pens played roughly the same amount of game time as a 7-game series during their 6-game bout with Ottawa. Game 5 went abput halfway into a 3rd OT, and Game 6 went halfway into the first OT. Still, they got some time off before facing Montreal.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on May 12, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not so concerned about how much time they’ve actually played. I maintain that a 3-4 day layoff after the second round is huge and is definitely going to favor whatever team (Canadiens/Pittsburgh) win tonight.

It’s not enough time for real rust to develop (like potentially happened with our 10 day layoff), but it’s enough time to get rested.

Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com

To be honest after the stinkers we put together after our layoff I am not so sure that I wouldn’t mind only having a day off.

good question. I was wondering the same thing, given that VS is joining it “in progress”. I’m hoping center ice is picking up the TSN feed or maybe this means that the NHL network will carry it?

Same thing as Game 5. It will be on the very botom of your NHL Center Ice Package. 1488 for Verizon subscribers in my area (DC/VA). After the Pens game is over, flip to VS for a HD feed. NHL Net will not pick it up. They do not have rights to broadcast playoff games for some reason…

Have you been able to get a solid radio feed online that’s on-time with the TV broadcast? I hate when its a minute ahead or behind. Especially if tis ahead, and you hear the play before you see it… just seems unnatural.

by brf132 on May 12, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully he doesn’t compare Pronger to a dandelion again tonight. He is definitely a character. I thought that announcers were supposed to be un-bias? I feel like JJ, Jonsey and Bill Clement are fairly unbias and will announce the game with fairness to both teams, at least most of the time. With CSN Philly being a bitch all year and not sharing their broadcasts, I have seen so many homer announcers throughout the course of the year. Its ridiculous, and only gets worse during the playoffs, apparently…

by brf132 on May 12, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

mmmmmm I wouldn’t call JJ an unbiased announcer…he’s nowhere near the level of Edwards though.

Eh

There’s a line, though (and I can think of a few Philly announcers who cross it…don’t like them as much either). Sure it’s entertaining for a while, but when someone’s flipping out in outrage when they’re empirically wrong (for a neutral, non-hockey example, I suggest checking out Rob Dibble on Washington Nationals broadcasts) it’s just embarassing to watch.

Then again, I never really enjoy when they have a “fan” type commentator in the booth (think Tony Kornheiser or Dennis Miller in MNF), so a guy who calls players on the other team names and think his team craps gold (the general local version of the “fan” commentator) really doesn’t do much for me.

All that said, I have no idea where Edwards fits into that spectrum.

The “fan” commentators are completely intolerable. The Habs radio broadcast has one of those doing color commentary. You can’t actually tell what’s happening on the ice because he spends the whole time cheering/shouting over the play-by-play call.

Coatseys a homer. Clement is not he was a color guy when espn had broadcasts with gary throne. Jj may be a little bit of a homer but he knows the sport and always gives credit to the good play of opponents.

by bfrank27 on May 12, 2010 2:51 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Local PBP guys

should have a little bit of homer in them. Not enough where they lose a realistic grip on the game, but a little excitement for big plays on local broadcasts is part of the fun of watching your hometown announcers (something I’ve grown to miss a bit being out of town).

Agreed on the assessments of Coates and Clement, which is why I love having Clement back as a broadcaster.
