Can Michael Leighton win the 2010 - 2011 starting job tonight???

I am not advocating this in anyway I just want to toss the thought out there, playing Devil's Advocate, and seeing what everyone is thinking. If Mr. Leighton throws down another world class performance tonight and carries this team to the most improbable of comebacks does searching for the young goalie of the future become an after thought this summer?

Look at the all big name goalies who are playing golf. Lundquist, Brodeur, Luongo, Fluery, Miller the list goes on and on. Who needs a big ticket big name goalie? Nabokov is the only opening day starter that remains in the final four. The other 3 starting goalies combine for a cap hit of only 4.327 million. That is  less than what Boston is paying their backup Tim Thomas. Imagine all the holes this team could fill they put the full 11 million dollars of cap space this summer and upgraded 4 more skaters.

No longer would we have Parent Krajeick Doomsday pairing out there getting over matched on the road. No longer will have Aaron Asham getting passes from Giroux or Carcillo mucking it up on the 1st line. No longer will have absolutely zero scoring depth and have to rely on Captain Mike RIchards to do everything. We could have actually top 6 talent on the wings of our top lines. And more importantly we also wouldn't have to trade away a major piece of the our core like Jeff Carter to get someone who might not perform any better in these pressure back against the wall do or die situations then Leighton and Boucher have done all series. If Rassk folds tonight, which he very well may, that is even more evidence against a youth movement in net. Just ask Detroit how the feel about Jimmy Howard. He might be cup ready in a few more years but this Flyers team is build for the NOW.

Do we have time to let Kimmo and Pronger age and JVR and Giroux hit the open market before a young goalie is ready to carry this team to the promised land? Or can this mix of players get by again on the cheap with throw aways and cast offs between the pipes? Our goaltending has turned into a strength not a weakness an upgraded D corps and better chemistry up front might be what we need go all the way.  Its your call.
