Please help me watch this

Hello Flyers fans. I'm a huge fan who had season tickets back in the Hitchcock era (greatest series ever vs. the Leafs, last ECF we went to, was there for all of it). However I am now living in Japan. Recently, between the rare broadcasts in country and following game threads and write-ups and a few other ways, I have been able to keep up with the Flyers. Now though, being as far as they are, I want to watch every single game. And I can't. All through the Playoffs has been a burden, and the first 2 series I would have loved to have seen (as an understatement). I searched for over 5 hours for anything to see game 7. I was determined, but came up empty handed. Dissapointment doesn't come close to how I felt. I absolutely can't miss watching any more games. I would pay $, but NHL.com doesn't offer the service in the off season due to every game being televised nationally (which doesn't help me being international). I have only found one site that I can even get the game after the fact, but I don't have an existing membership and can't get in. I just want to watch the games and I'm just running into one dead end after another. If there is any way that you know of that I can get to watch games after the fact (I am usually working during the games and the filter blocks nearly everything but SBN), I would very much appreciate that. You would instantly be my and my girlfriend's new hero (took her to Amrica in March to watch the late season smackdown against the Devils, and she instantly became a fan and brought back a poster for our apartment). If you know anything that could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at einman_77@hotmail.com if you would prefer. Thanks for your help.

I’m assuming you’ve tried atdhe.net?

by Ben Feldman on May 16, 2010 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

I tried justin, which is usually tied to atdhe, but my impression was they just stream the live game. I need video on demand or some other way to watch it after the fact.

Slingbox

You buy it and you create an account that is connected to a cable account. The Slingbox allows you to have the same channels that you would have at home (the cable) anywhere you want to have said channels. I’m guessing you have family here in the States, so setting up the Slingbox to access cable from here would most likely solve your situation.

To add on...

Then you can watch the rebroadcasts hours later. Or you could DVR the games via slingbox plus your TV/DVR.

They would have to be watching the games when I wanted to, right? I’ve looked into sling-box before, but didn’t think about the DVR. The question would be how to get them to turn it on at 6:00 am.

by einman77 on May 16, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

You can control the Slingbox from where ever. You don’t need them to turn it on at any hour or anything.

I believe it just matters if they turn on the TV and change the channel.

Otherwise, you should be good.

Yeah, they can override what you do, but if they aren’t watching TV, there are no problems.

I’ve looked a little, but it seems like those boxes are expensive. Also, how long would it take for instalation? Might be something to consider for next round if I can’t find anything else, but that’s a lot of bread and would rather not drop that. I don’t watch much else on American TV.

But you need access to the games that have already happened, right?

I know a site that might be able to help you, because you can watch streams of archived games, and save the video later if you need to. However, I present it with a few disclaimers 1) it does cost money (not a lot), 2) I don’t know if it will work from Japan, and 3) while I have actually used it once (a while ago) to watch a game that had already happened, I have a Mac and cannot guarantee that there wasn’t anything iffy along the way for a PC user (and I probably shouldn’t leave out that I paid for it with an encrypted credit card number). All disclaimers finally said, try www.hockeystreams.com, which allows you to do everything that you’ve asked for.

You sure this is right? I keep getting a dead link.

by einman77 on May 17, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s giving me a server error when I try too, but it seriously was working yesterday. I didn’t intend to make it a link, SBNation did that automatically, so I would try typing it in later. When I went to find it for you, there was a message on the front page yesterday that they were having trouble with the website server but the server for the streams was continuing to work, so I don’t know if that’s happening again.

I know I made it sound really sketchy yesterday, because I’m just an overly careful person. I haven’t used it enough to vouch for it as if I used it all the time, but it’s been around a couple of years. I didn’t actually have any problems with it at all, I just didn’t want to be responsible if you ended up having trouble since I have the worst guilty conscience ever. I constantly do stuff like encrypt my credit card number and whatnot on the internet, it’s just the way I am.

It sounds like exactly what I need. I would love if it gets back online again. I got a slingbox, but that’s more for the future since it won’t get there until after game 3 at the earliest.

It seems to be up again… If all else fails, get the one day membership thing first, try it, and then do a longer one if it works. If the one day thing doesn’t work out, you’re only out 5 bucks.

This was money

I actually bought this for a month and a slingbox. Seems like this will do the trick, though the picture is really small, until that slingbox is up and running. The way my family is, that could take some time. Either way, I get to see what’s happening. Thanks so much.

This website seems too good to be true. Have you found any problems?

It's not free

so a slingbox for the year seems cheaper (and better quality?) than that. This is a quick fix, but a good one. Also, I bought the cheaper package (not HD) and the screen is pretty small. It can be enlarged, but at best it gets up to about 1/3rd the size of my computer screen, and that is probably generous. Not sure if the size changes with the HD package, but I imagine it is so small due to possible pixelation when enlarged. Far and away the best quick-fix for my playoff problem. As for next season, I think I have to give sling-box a go. I would also be able to watch “how the earth was made” in that scenario because my sister DVRs them. If this turns out to be better, I can just resell the sling-box on ebay (where I got it).

NHL.com Game Center might work…. not sure what the price is at this point in the year, though, or if it works overseas. I imagine it does. They allow you to watch the game after the fact.

I looked. They were the ones that said they were not going to show the games due to the national broadcasts. Couldn’t even buy it.

Being stuck in Japan for so long you missed an entire ECF the FLyers were in in 2008 against the Pens.

I was just looking at www.hockeystreams.com. If it indeed do what it says it does I am about to buy that for next season.

Looks sick. All games, live or archived, plus in HD got me sold.

I do not know what availability would be in Japan, but the NHL has select games for sale on iTunes. If you don’t have iTunes, click here to download it. Go to the iTunes store, type in “NHL Games of the Year” and click on the link with 2009-2010 on it, and scroll down from there.

In addition to a few select regular season games, they have select playoff games available as well. You have to scroll all the way down, but the playoff games are there. Sadly, the only Flyers games that are up are Game 4 and Game 7 of the Bruins series, but those were the best games of that series, and it is a start. The quality is very good so naturally, the download will take quite a few hours and take up a lot of space on your computer. The only other knock on it outside of the fact that you have to pay $1.99 per game is that you have to deal with the Versus announcers and broadcast. I hope this helps!

Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
