I ment to ask in your last fanpost, but what part of Japan are you in? I took a Japanese class (just an intro) in college and want to take an advanced course later. I’m also big into Japanese pop couture (as you can see from my bleach avatar). Its one of the many places I want to go to in my lifetime.

A lot of people who dont follow the comics are disliking it, but its the most Comic friendly comic movie Marvel has done IMO.

I thought it was full of popcorny goodness. Guns, robots, and a supercharged bad guy. The only thing missing in this movie was a little boob and it would have been perfect.

Me too! As you can imagine, I’m getting an earful from some English fans about Team England’s chances (esp. since we’re in the same group as they are), but I think we will get to the elimination round. If we can win a game in that round, I’d feel like we really accomplished something worthwhile (if we got more than one, I would be as excited as our run 8 years ago).

GO TEAM USA! :)

by Orange and Black Forever on May 17, 2010 6:40 AM EDT up reply actions

With our grouping, we had best make it into the elimination round. Algeria and Slovenia are ranked #29 and #49 respectively. The US is #11, and England’s the second-weakest of Pot 1 at #7 (South Africa, the host country, is #85).

The weakest possible draw would have been South Africa, Ghana (#38), and Slovenia. The worst possible draw would have been Brazil (#1), Cameroon (#14), and France (#9). England’s the second-weakest draw from Pot 1, Algeria’s third-weakest from Pot 3 (Nigeria’s #32), and Slovenia’s the weakest draw from Pot 4, so overall we drew a pretty good group with regards to our opportunity to move on.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on May 17, 2010 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. We definitely got a good draw for group play, BUT, I have seen us flame out many times in the past (e.g., look at four years ago – simply awful). So, I’m not comfortable assuming we are making it to the elimination round; still, you’re right, we should get there.

Any win after that would be wonderful. :)

by Orange and Black Forever on May 17, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m worried all the England-US hype will lead Team USA to focus too much on England and less on our other opponents. Getting through group pool play should still be easier than usual, but I won’t trust our ability until I see us play some.

by chillicothe20 on May 17, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. We’ll know a bit about Team USA after that first game with England; however, you’re exactly right, we’ll know even more about them from the games after we play England. For example, if we win/draw in the first game, do we have a letdown afterwards? Or, if we lose the first game, do we bounce back immediately afterwards?

Should be fun to watch. :)

Can not wait. Soccer is honestly my next favorite sport after hockey. Probably cause it was always my second sport (as far as playing went growing up), and I lived in Germany for a brief period and went to some games over there. Honestly, there is no atmosphere that I have been in that can even begin to compare to being at a soccer game.

I won’t be fortunate enough to be able to get up there for a game, but if you go, you have to get yourself some hot dogs from the Bell Centre. I’m not even a huge hot dog fan, but they are amazing. One game I had club seats, and they come with all you can eat food, or at least did then, and god were those tickets worth every penny b/c of those hot dogs.

I wish! Josh and I tried to get tickets for the back end of the home and home back in February, but Canadiens tickets sell out in less than a heartbeat. I wish I had the kind of money required to get them on StubHub, it would be amazing to be up there.

by DragonGirl0583 on May 17, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

It honestly is a great place to watch a game, and the city itself is really nice as well. I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with a weekend trip up there this weekend and Game 4 tickets, but we have family stuff to do, and the cost, with the tickets, would be more than we should be spending. We might head up next year for a random weekend game, ideally with the Flyers in town.

by DLJr on May 17, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, you must not have been here for the periodic “Jen is obsessed with the city of Montreal” moments, hahaha. Josh and I are actually trying to have a destination wedding there, I know exactly how nice the city is :) We try to go up a couple of times a year since the drive is so easy. It’s one of my favorite places, I just don’t like their hockey team or their fans.

by DragonGirl0583 on May 17, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I missed that hahaha. I used to date a girl that went to McGill, so I used to make the drive up there a lot when I was in college. I honestly love that city, and I actually love their fans when I’m at a game up there that doesn’t involve the Flyers. Well, I don’t like their arrogance or sense of entitlement, but I’ve always had a blast watching games with them.

by DLJr on May 17, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

True, I’ve talked hockey with some people several times up there (and actually in Quebec City, too), and the “fellow hockey fan” mentality came out. I will say they’re not all bad, but I think that goes for every fanbase. I mentioned this a couple of days ago, but we were down the street at the Planetarium during a regular season game back in ‘07, and walking there you could hear everything they were screaming loud and clear 4 blocks away. It was insane. We just haven’t been able to sync up getting tickets to a game at the same time that we can be up there, but we’re definitely working on it.

by DragonGirl0583 on May 17, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

So how about the Sixers getting some good luck? Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner are a pretty damn good duo to build around for the next ~10 years. I may actually tune into the NBA Western Conference Finals to listen to Collins tonight, too. Course, it can’t be hard to sound more professional than Eddie “isn’t there a Phillies game or something for you to cover” Jordan.

by Ben Feldman on May 19, 2010 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

Ya, I am pretty excited about this too. I just hate seeing the Eagles, Flyers and Phillies doing so well and the Sixers being so terrible. What do you think of Evan Turner? Reports are conflicting in whether or not the Sixers should take Turner at #2 or not.

@Mitchman88 on Twitter

by Mitchell Green on May 20, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

First of all, I think you always take the best player available you can when drafting, not necessarily the one you think would “fit best” in the short term. So, I do think the Sixers should take Turner (or Wall, if it should somehow come to that). From what I understand, though, Turner fills a similar spot to Iguodala. So the question may be not only how do you fit him in short term, but how do you fit him in long term given Iguodala’s contract?

If I’m Ed Stefanski, and Snider and Luukko have told me I’m not going anywhere, I begin a full rebuild. Not just a revamp, but a complete rebuild. I trade Iguodala (and maybe Dalembert) for whatever I can get and get younger players and draft picks. It’s basically the only way to win in the NBA in the 21st century — you have to really suck before you can be really good. Quite frankly, it’s about time the Sixers organization really started from square one.

by Ben Feldman on May 20, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve always liked Iggy but get the sense he’s going to do his best work elsewhere. It seems to me he is the McNabb of the Sixers… they keep trying to build the team around him while also dethroning him from within.

It’s interesting… the Celtics were bad for a while and then really started to come around when they had players like Delonte West and Al Jefferson. Then they traded those two away, in effect reducing their chances from being a long-time, home-grown contender to the team they are now. After this season ends, it’s likely back to the drawing board for them.

My best friend from college is a fan of all things Boston sports (except for hockey, where after living with me for three years, his allegiance shifted to the Flyers). The Celtics are his favorite team, and he has said from the summer they got KG, Ray Allen, et. al., that they would have a three-year window to win a title. That window slams shut after this season.

I would hope that the Sixers take the time and build a team the right way. They need several homegrown stars if they’re going to succeed.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

it's next saturday night and this has been promoted very heavily. may 29th.

i got rashad +105 moneyline for 100 dollars. since then he has moved to -125 and by fighttime it could be -140. rashad is too well rounded for rampage. rampage just going to go for the knockout and get frustrated b/c rashad will dance around the first round. then when rampage gets a little tired and frustrated he will go for the takedown and tko him for the win. bisping/ miller ain’t soo good.

Well my experience at the Phillies game consisted of watching Dice-K pitch 7 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball and being 5 feet away from the landing point of a Jeremy Hermida foul ball. While I was not cheering for him to get the no-no, I would have stood up and applauded if he got it, out of respect. That being said, I cheered Castro’s hit like it was a walk-off grand slam.

At least the Flyers won!

I hear you on the “almost watching an opposing team no-no” part of the experience. I went to the Phillies-Brewers game last April (while I was still living in PA) when Dave Bush went 7 1/3 without a hit. I was actually hoping for the no-no, because if I’m going to watch the Phillies lose, there might as well be some history created.

And yes, at least the Flyers won!

I could go to the Phils-Sox game at Fenway, but I’m going to be away with the family for the weekend.

That was the first game that Dice-K has looked legit in a while too. At least you went to the game.

And the Flyers won!

will I get banned if I say that I never seen an episode of lost? I just never found it to be interesting. And I could have guessed, from what I hear is the ending, since I heard of the premiss.

My friend told me the responses on twitter are either “I loved it! Even if I don’t understand it…” or “I hated it! I don’t get it.”

So, there is no consensus except – in typical Lost fashion – “um, what?”

I have never seen an episode but just I’ve checked out people’s reactions on Twitter and Facebook and the mixed reactions are quite amusing.

I often wonder if I would have liked that show or not, but from the majority of the reactions I am seeing (and having been given knowledge of the ending), I do not think it is something I would have liked.

A few weeks ago, there was a lot of stats about shot-blocking and how it correlates with winning games. Does anyone have any of the links for those discussions, because I can’t find them but I’m pretty sure they must be out there somewhere (unless I made it up).

And, now it is going to be the real starting roster. I am a little worried about the USA’s defense with Gooch not being 100%. He is the link that holds this team together; just as important as Donovan and Howard. Bradley in the Midfield will be pretty important too.

Boston’s luck is getting worse and worse. After being up 3 games to 0 against the Magic, the Celtics have lost the last 2 games and after a parade of injuries and ridiculous technicals to Kendrick Perkins, now face the very real possibility of suffering the exact same fate as the Boston Bruins and the Bruins ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals.

I’m a little torn here. Because on one hand, I do enjoy seeing Boston sports fall back to earth after the ridiculous decade they just had of nothing but championships, but at the same time, I do not want the Flyers comeback to be forgotten about. If the Celtics manage to make 3 for 3 this year on 3-0 series leas choke jobs by a team from or affiliated with Boston, would casual sports fans and the mainstream media forget all about the Flyers? And slightly related, I know we are all not NBA fans, but if you are, or if you are like me and are not an NBA fan but a Flyers fan with a vested interest in this, are you rooting for the Magic to complete the 3-0 comeback, or the Celtics to hang on so the Flyers’ comeback is not overshadowed by ESPN and other mainstream media outlets?

Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."

by Justin F. on May 27, 2010 1:03 AM EDT reply actions

As a Magic fan, I’m obviously biased on this one, but I think having Orlando do it could, in the long run, bring more attention to the Flyers doing it. It’s amazing enough to have it happen, but having a team come back from 3-0 to win a series twice in one year would get attention for years to come. Especially with both of them being against Boston teams.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on May 27, 2010 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions

All I know, is that Bruins fans still aren’t over the Flyers series (you can’t even talk about it) and the Celtics are being compared to the Bruins.

Sadly, right now Boston is more a basketball team than a hockey team, so I think that the Boston media would focus more on the Celtics collapse than the Bruins. But I think that ESPN and the national media will focus on both of collapses because they will find the parallels between the teams.

Also, no NBA team has come back from a 3-0 deficit, so that might bring more attention to the Magic. Bottom line: I’m torn because I want the C’s to win (since I’m a fan) but I don’t want the Flyers comeback to be overshadowed.

by JLS89 on May 27, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a fan of either team, so my rooting interest rests squarely on what it does to the Flyers’ comeback in terms of notoriety and media perception, both now and years down the road.

That actually is an interesting point about ESPN and the national media talking about the Flyers more in the case of finding parallels between the collapses (the Celtics just got a nasty bite of the injury bug in Game 5, just like the Bruins did with Krejci’s and Sturm’s injuries). It would be unprecedented and if Orlando does win, I could sort of see the extra attention being paid to the Flyers now. If it was a different city collapsing, then definitely not, but seeing as it is the same city, that would actually be kind of cool for the Flyers to be a part of that. I did not think of it like that before.

Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."

by Justin F. on May 27, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, the Celts did have the injury bug, but it also doesn’t help when 2 guys get concussions in the same game. Also, I don’t think that the same city has had 2 collapses like this before, but then again, they are few and far between.

by JLS89 on May 27, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not the same city, but it also happened this year to the Bruins’ ECHL affiliate in Reading, against the Cincinatti Cyclone.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on May 27, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I was rewatching the video, and the Daniels concussion has me mystified. It looks like he just ran into Gortat, either chest or arm, and knocked himself out. Gortat was pretty much stationary on the play. That’s just horrible, horrible luck. The Big Baby KO I can understand – Howard’s just that strong; IIRC, he’s given Nelson a concussion in practice, and I know he broke Courtney Lee’s face.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on May 27, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard also knocked Big Baby’s teeth out when he got a concussion. And yes, the Daniels concussion is interesting. Perkins 2 technicals were interesting too… but they took away the 2nd one which is good.
