the thing is that this Flyer team is very hard NOT to like. Like I’ve said before, I hated this team 5 months ago. They were the epitome of spoiled, lazy, whiney teenagers. Now they’ve matured into blue collar guys, not afraid to get their hands dirty.

He gives the right reason, too: “What the Flyers are this postseason: Everything your disappointing team wasn’t.”
And that applies to past incarnations of this team that haven’t lived up to expectations. It’s something you only see it every couple playoffs in Philly, and in other cities in other years—those teams that come together and everyone starts playing to their ability level. Let’s hope we can keep riding this wave, but be cautious, since Montreal fans are in these same waters.
Something to add....
An article from the Globe & Mail, talking about how the Flyers have more Canadian players than the Canadiens. It’s got some insight from our francophone players, as well: Canada’s team?

Anyway we can get them to put that up on the scoreboard tonight. I don’t think I can handle another USA chant at the game.
Yeah I don’t think that’s going anywhere, and it was hilarious. Although, it makes me nervous to use it so early in a series. I don’t think arrogance is the right word for it, but being so ballsy, if you will, to use it during Game 1 of a 7 game series makes me fearful of karma.
I agree, but sometimes you just have to pull out all stops and hope karma smiles on you. At least the “ole” chant featured some cleverness. The USA chant just smacks of ignorance.

Panotch reporting that game 7 vs. Boston drew an average rating of 11.6 on CSN (roughly 345,000 households), another record for them. Postgame Live averaged a 5.0 rating (roughly 149,000 households), which is also a record. Would be interesting to know what and when the game peaked at; I imagine those numbers will be out soon enough.
DGB continues to impress. Actually lol’d like 5 times.

I like the mentality of this team, even though it may just be words. Let us not lose sight of the fact, that we played quite horribly in the first period and if not for a couple good breaks, they could have just as easily lost game 1. They need to come out tonight with the same hunger that they had in Game 6 vs. Boston. Shut it down and take it over.

I know it shipped, I got the e-mail today. I was just asking because usually shipping emails sate how long delivery will take. It says Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico take 7 days, so I assume it should take less time for me huh? like I said , its not a problem, I didn’t expect it to come this soon (I ordered on Sat). Just seemed odd to not get a delivery date. Im sure it’ll be here in 3-5 business days, like most standard mail.

The cool thing about the Flyers’ colors is that you can hunt deer, work on a construction site, and go to a hockey game in the same clothes. Pure genius (and economical).

If you saw the comments on From the Rink, I said the same thing over there. I think this bodes well for Carter’s RFA contract.

That article about the reporter is annoying mainly because he brought the damn Santa Clause incident again. Its seems like whenever people talk bad about Philly fans they bring up that incident is the first thing that gets brought up and it annoys the hell out of me. Do haters realize that it has been 42 years since that has happened!?
It doesn’t change the fact that there are tons of idiots here still doing stupid things; and as long as that continues to happen, it will continue to be brought up.
Yes, but that incident isn’t even that bad—there are plenty he could cite which are more along the lines of the idiocy we need to prevent. Some fake Santa Claus who was drunk and couldn’t walk a straight line being booed is not worse than some asshole shooting off a flare gun in the stands at a MNF game (which really happened) or the fights in the stands at the Vet between those two private Philly HS.
And the fact that it happened in 1968 when the entire country was in a state of general unrest (riots, Vietnam, economy, etc) sort of needs to be brought into the conversation as well. Context. Using more modern examples helps the argument more, I think. The Santa thing sort of makes it a joke and a recycled one at that. It’s too easy to dismiss and hurts the ultimate conclusion to the argument.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
I agree about what it does to the argument, I guess I’m saying there is no point getting yourself upset over it b/c, as we’ve all seen, it isn’t going away any time soon.
And, I would say getting worse. We as humans are becoming more and more rageful and belligerent.
Just Call Me "M"!
I don’t know about that. I think humans have always been rageful and belligerent; there’s just more of us now and we’re living longer so it’s more of a problem. Rageful people packed in like sardines = recipe for disaster.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
But there are tons of idiots in every city doing stupid things. It gets media attention here because the narrative of rude/nasty/stupid fans already exists in Philly. You don’t even have to do any research to write that story.
Someone at 700 Level brought up something I forgot. Montreal fans threw bananas at Kevin Weekes.
How is that not exponentially worse?
how about they have basically burned their city down when they win a playoff series? That seems a little more crazy than anything Philly fans have done.

It’s never a good idea to say, “well what idiots here did isn’t as bad as what idiots there did,” leave that to the lazy journalists. Let’s worry about just being a little better to our fellow hockey fans, the people that cover the game, and the athletes that play it instead.
That’s why I put my second post there. What I’m saying is, how is possible that media doesn’t fixate on that?
I see your point. To be honest, I think they do, I just think we don’t get a lot of it here. Being up in Canada, it’s pretty well understood how Habs fans (or their resident idiot portion of their fanbase) are considered to be the worst (worst = morons, obnoxious, jerks, etc.) in hockey. Honestly Habs fans are the only ones that I have heard that are considered worse than Philly fans, and by fans here, I mean idiots of course, not your typical good hearted fan that is there to support the team. This may have come from spending signifcant time in Canada when an ex attended a university up there, so I heard/saw/read more of that kind of stuff. I don’t think a ton of it makes it’s way to us down here.

When Habs fans want coverage of their team, they go straight to the guy who sees the Flyers as revolting as the Nazis! And on top of that, there are so many Habs blogs out there. Not to mention that he writes all in English and several Habs fans probably prefer to read everything in French.
HEITP did have a game thread for Game 7 of Habs-Pens and it did attract 71 comments and the recap had 60, which is the most I had ever seen on the site. So it may be growing a bit.

Boychuk is now a UFA
Found this article about how Boychuk will actually be a UFA and not an RFA this offseason, not sure if it’s been brought up, but it’s a pretty interesting name to add to the list of UFA defensemen this offseason.
I’m assuming he’ll be priced out of our range, unless we’re replacing Coburn with him and signing a bargain bin third pairing.
Right. I’m saying our defense can’t look at much better with Boychuk, because he’d have to handicap our options at 5&6. I’m not sure why he’d come here to be a #4, either.
Are we assuming Barty is a top six next year?
I’d love to have him, but the chance he ends up here in my mind is as close to 0% as you can get. I actually think Boston will resign him, but if they don’t, I could see Pittsburgh going after him, or the Caps. I just thought it was interesting how he ended up as a UFA instead of an RFA b/c of a technicality.

He basically called Flyers fans bandwagoners. Sure every team that makes a playoff run is going to get frontrunners, but he diminishes the actual fanbase.
Before the Flyers began one of the greatest comebacks in sports and got past the Bruins in seven dramatic games, only the team’s hard-core fans had asked for a lift. Now it appears everyone in Philly has his thumb out in the hopes of hitching a ride to another parade courtesy of the Orange and Black.Maybe I am the only one, but that certainly reads to me like he is under-estimating the size of the Flyers hardcore fan base. I dare you to find a city and a sports team that does not gain a few extra frontrunning fans during playoff runs. Completely forgetting about a team like Caps fans did only to comeback when they are the tops in the league is being a bandwagon fan. Flyers may have a few frontrunners now (including Wyshynski), but bandwagon? No.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
I would have to throw the Marlins in on that one. Living down here I have noticed that they have their hard core fans and that’s about it. Even when they are winning.

The Marlins have terrible ownership; basically their owner doesn’t re-sign any good young players he trades them and replaces them with draft picks who are cheap.

That happens a lot. There are plenty of displaced yankees (small y northerners, not necessarily big Y New Yorkers) that root for other teams. The record for sellout time for a Dolphins home game is still held by a Dolphins-Eagles game, where the crowd was dominated by Kelly Green, not Teal. My theory is still that it takes at least one generation for a true home crowd to develop – kids need to be young enough to not have a developed fanhood and grow up with the team to really become a solid fan base. The Marlins are just now reaching that point, but Huizinga’s been so cheap with that team that they’re hard to root for. The Bucs are a good example of that principle in football, though. Even with the orange creamsicle uniforms, they developed a fan base that now is probably among the stronger ones in football.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
well, to be fair, that’s pretty much the story at all S. Florida sporting events…marlins, dolphins, panthers, take your pick.
i did go to a Heat game this season that was mostly Heat fans, but it could be because a) the team is not that far removed from winning a championship or b) they were playing Denver
A sporting experience down here is vastly different than anywhere else. For example, I went to a NY Jets game this season (vs. Bengals) and it was 98 1/2% Jets fans…there were maybe 6 Bengals fans I saw all game.

Yeah, we had talked about that here. In my experience, these playoffs haven’t seen the type of crowds that they usually see in Philly (excluding Game 6 and Game 1 of the ECF). The Phillies success has impacted the crowds at there, even if it’s only by 1,000 or so, it’s still very noticeable in a building that is usually over capacity and very loud.
For game 3, the Cardinals were in town playing the Phillies across the street.
It’s not much of a stretch to say that people in Philly weren’t that interested if you can buy $30 seats to a second round playoff game.

Well, playoff tickets aren’t cheap, the economy sucks – even devotion to one’s team can fall prey to being able to put food on the table, etc.
I would have been there, but I had a good job back in the States. I could have afforded it. A lot of people can’t do so easily. When one is in doubt about whether or not one can attend a game, and you know it’s a bit of a stretch financially, playoff tickets are going to be an easy thing to cut. You would have to feel somewhat confident that you might see a win in that scenario. If you weren’t confident that they were going to win, you would be out the cost of the ticket AND you would feel worse for having paid for it.
That was my point.

bashing hockey, the Flyers, and Flyers fans
Yeah, I just didn’t quite get where he was bashing hockey or the Flyers specifically. He basically is what he is railing against. I’ve followed this team religiously for a long time, and we’ve always had a very strong following, so I don’t get fazed by fans that jump on. Actually, I enjoy it. I’ve very few friends that are into hockey, so when they get excited about it, I’m all for it.
That’s okay, I see what you were going for. I read it again and I do see what you are saying. Reading that this morning did kind of set me off though and caused me to lump hockey and the Flyers in with his column about the fans.
Then again, it’s all probably my fault for reading a column I knew was not going to be a fun read.

I would also say a lot of it has to do with the fact that it’s larger cities that the bandwaggoners come from so it’s easier to find them. Philly and Chi are prime examples this year, just as with baseball it’s always NYY, Boston, Chicago Cubs, and so on.
I spent 10 years in Chicago and ALL of my friends that live up there and NEVER watch hockey are now always posting “Chicago this, and Hawks that”.
