The Delco Times article about Prongs and Richie is encouraging. I was hoping that they could form this kind of partnership in time for next season but to see it now, it’s great. They really compliment each other and I think with Prongs being better at managing the media has made Richie’s life as captain much easier as he can focus on other things.

I don’t care if it’s skill or luck, as long as it continues through this series and far into the next.
Secondly, I think it’s a great point about how the Olympics really did help Pronger and Richards bond finally.

The same official who said the Flyers were going to go after a young goalie now says “Who knew we had the guy we needed already here?”
I just threw up in my mouth.
Fucking morons.
That quote is very disconcerting.
What this postseason proves is we don’t need Vokoun if we’re playing this system this well. But we still need better than Leighton moving forward, if we’re going to be a consistently good team.
Yes, clearly we need someone much better than Leighton. I mean the guy only had .918 save percentage in the regular season and a > 75% win percentage. Obviously the only explanation for posting 3 shutouts in 4 playoff games is luck, or unicorns.
I suppose you could chalk it up to the flyer’s playing better in front of him, protecting him more. But the general consensus is that the flyers have been winning games, but not playing well.
So the flyers aren’t playing so great, and leighton is a fluke, so yeah, I guess unicorns is the only answer.
They are playing fine right now. And I’ll take a consistently great playoff season. I’m just saying it can’t necessarily be relied on in the future, especially given the track record of the guy in front of Leighton.
No one wants to say it, but they take nights off. When they do, we need a goalie who is more than a product of a system. Leighton has shown excellence only within the context of great defensive play in front of him. Good for him, all things considered. Maybe not good enough for us.
I agree. Lavi saw the light and sent them out trapping. This team has always been good enough to play with a mediocre goaltender if they played defensive hockey.
The call for Vokoun was that they weren’t playing defensive hockey, they were playing Lavi’s ill-suited system of attacking and taking risks and all that stuff.
But Leighton is still only a $1m goaltender. If this talk continues, I’m going to have to create a Godzilla-size cutout of Tim Thomas and stand outside Holmgren’s house with it until he returns to the land of reality.
Assuming we get past Montreal, I’d expect that our series against a West team that has deep offensive lines will bring us crashing back to reality.

And you won’t find much argument from me about that. You know I’m not particularly fond of any of these guys except for maybe Mike Richards, but even I’ll concede the Richards has his shortcomings.
Although, I’ve thought his work opposite Giroux has been alright, but nothing special. He just gets my nod to play because, he at least has played.

I agree. If they use this, nothing short of miraculous, playoff run as an example that this team is fine as constructed I am going to go nuts. I am tempering my opinion of the team and the need for change until the very point this is over, cup or not. And standing pat is not part of my plan.

FTR: Shouldn’t Blair Betts be included in those castoffs. He wasn’t even under contract in training camp was he?
That Primeau goal always sets my hair on end. That man was a true beast and leader in 04 and to think of how his career was ended prematurely and without punishment to the offending player makes me sick. He literally put the team on his back that year and led them as far as he could.
On Gagne: What he’s done this season has been impressive and inspiring. I was worried before that he wouldn’t be a Flyer next year. That fear has subsided and I believe he should be a lifer here in Philly. The next question of mine that comes to mind is: Is Gags FLYER Hall of Fame worthy?

Betts was a training camp invitee, yes.
Gagne is probably a Flyer Hall of Fame entry, but I don’t see his number being retired unless he wins a Cup here.

Agreed on HOF but even if he wins a cup I’m not so sure about his number. Like you guys said on BSH Radio the Flyers are uber stingy with the numbers thing. Also, he wasn’t the only great #12 the Flyers have ever had.

…and that’s why I bought and still wear his jersey while watching games. :) I also agree about the lack of punishment for the guy responsible for the end of his career.

unfortunately, I’m not sure the numbers work to make Gagne a lifetime Flyer, but we’ll see.

Homer says Carter improving but will probably have to wait until later in the series.
This is pretty good...

Is the Wach open tonight, I heard it was closed for maintenance or something and the game wouldn’t be broadcast on the big screen?

I have to admit the new handle is confusing to me as either an inside joke or somewhat blasphemous towards a heroic defenseman that played great hockey in this town????

Tribute to the fact that Ed Van Impe was the man, and the fact that people always call this team(and quite frequently our fans) a bunch off Buffoons/Gorillas/Nazis/etc.
Didn’t hear those people whining when he knocked Kharlamov out cold though.
