A couple things. I’m sure it’s been discussed a lot here, but since I rarely come around on the weekends….
I found it interesting that they took Carcillo out-not surprising though. I realize after looking at the Corsi numbers that the 3rd line of Asham-Giroux-JVR is playing pretty good. Also, you know we’re not mixing up the Briere-Hartnell-Leino line. I thought Carter looked very good and comfortable in the first line winger role (even though he’s clearly not 100%). But seriously, Carcillo doesn’t fit on that 4th line with Lappy?
Secondly, why did no one save some of the infamous sand from the locker hallway and submit it to the NHL?
Go Flyers, let’s wrap this series up tonight.

I’m rarely around on the weekend myself and was wondering the same thing. But the conclusion I came to was that they kept Powe on the 4th line with Lappy and Betts purely because of his speed. The guy is definately faster than Carcillo and Betts and Lappy are slow as hell. That’s the only thing that I can think of.

This may be a stupid question, but you here about team’s dressing a 7th D man (I think the Canadien’s did that this series). Could we dress and extra forward? I know the guy is going to ride the pine a lot, but it might give Lavy some options for that 4th line and rest guys up.

Dress an extra forward and then who doesn’t get dressed? A 6th d-man?

No. Teams that dress a 7th D only dress 11 forwards.

I couldn’t find it in the rules, and I could not recall if 20 was the limit. I figured it was, but who knows sometimes.

The situation is becoming too intense for Carcillo
Not to say its not getting intense of all of them, but Carcillo is more sensitive to that kind of thing.
Having him sit will give him an opportunity to get control of those nerves.
Im not saying this the reason he sat over someone else, but I do believe it is a factor.

Really? I honestly didn’t think it had much to do with his emotions but rather what he brought to the table…but you could very well be spot on.

He has disappeared (in a positive role) for the most part since he tweaked his knee, or whatever he slightly injured. If he was 100%, or was a bit more effective, I think they might have sat Powe instead. But based on play, this was probably the smart move.
I agree. However, having watched Powe last game on the PK, he absolutely deserves to be playing.

Oh I agree. Carcillo was actually my first choice to sit on the chopping block topic we discussed a few days back. However, I wanted to keep Nodl in b/c of my man crush on him, and I also thought for 5-on-5 play he is a better player. But, Powe has done nothing to get himself benched, he has played very well. Carcillo to me was the most glaring choice based on performance.
To me, its a no brainer keeping Powe in the lineup and Carcillo out. What does Carcillo do? Mixes it up, agitates and gets under the Canadiens skin, hopefully draws a penalty or two. He can score but it can’t be relied on to do so. When he is healthy (which is key because he is clearly not), he plays well on that top line with Richards and Gagne and is able to bring some good forechecking and grinding along the boards. The important thing about Powe’s game is that he kills penalties, which is huge. Powe and Betts have been quietly brilliant all playoffs, killing penalties and playing that fourth line defensive role. Those guys don’t get enough credit for what they bring to this team. Carcillo is more expendable because he can be replaced offensively by Carter (obviously) and we really don’t need him to be mixing it up and taking penalties. Powe’s penalty killing cannot be overlooked.

Geoff I don’t know if you saw the story on Habs Eyes On The Prize, but their article about Giroux should definitely be up there. I recommend it to everybody, a great article on Claude.
Formerly... "You don't have to be sweet, to be good"
excellent article over there. Man am I glad the Canadiens didn’t take Giroux at 20 in the draft. I love the kid, I think on Saturday on NBC they were comparing him to Glen Anderson.

No it’s not sad at all…I’ve been waiting for that for soooo long. And I second the Lost finale thread…no one around me at work watches it.
You know honestly, that might not be the worst thing…there are times where I had something to do and could not watch the show live and would stay up late to watch the recording simply because I knew someone would blow it for me the next day at work.

Yeah, I really did, a couple people talked about it on the off topic thread, no spoilers, just general. Which is where we should probably move this so we don’t get out of hand on here. But I thought it was very fitting for the show, and kept up the style they have used through out the series, which I enjoyed.

Carcillo
I have touched on the reasons why Carcillo wasn’t in the lineup, and most likely, will continue to NOT be in the lineup… Here’s a quick recap of my thoughts about Daniel Carcillo.
Let me say FIRSTLY, that I am a strong supporter of Carcillo and what he brings to this team night in and night out. That being said…
The potential scratches to make room for 2 good forwards to come back in the game boiled down to this:
Nodl, Carcillo, Asham, Powe. Does anyone disagree with that?
Asham couldn’t be scratched. He has played very consistently with JVR and Claude all year long, and now that line can be reunited and used in a 3 line rolling rotation, something many coaches in the NHL wish they could do toward the end of a playoff game. Asham has played disciplined and smart hockey throughout these playoffs, and really opens things up for JVR and Claude out there.
Powe is in the same boat. He has been shuffled around all 4 lines this year, and has been a solid player throughout. He plays the PK, and he plays it well. His speed and aggression have worked in our favor all year, and he is the perfect mold for a gjuy to play in Laviolette’s forecheck/pressure first system.
That leaves Nodl, who was obviously the first choice, and Carcillo, who has seen limited ice time this postseason so as it is. I mean, Nodl was playing more minutes than Carcillo up until Game 4.
I think Lavi made the right choice.
Listen, Jacques. Whether or not there was sand outside the dressing room, and whether or not it was sabotage: composite sticks? That’s your answer for why there was skate trouble in this one specific game? Even if you are innocent, that’s the excuse of a guilty man.
Totally in need of a “shenanigans” declaration if ever there was a need for one…

I didn’t even understand what he was trying to say. I just wondered why nobody saved the “sand” to submit as proof…Clearly though, the Flyers treated it as a non-issue.

It seems to me (and lots of others out there) that this is simply the case of the team taking on the attitude of the coach, which is a very good thing.
That being said someone in the Flyers organization and/or the NHL in general needs to investigate this because IF (stress, stress, stress the IF) there was something going on that shouldn’t have 1. Montreal should be subjected to some form of punishment. 2. Steps should be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again in Montreal or anywhere else. I hope they are just holding back on it until the playoffs are over so it won’t be a distraction…

I’m just wondering, but why is there no talk about Gill covering the puck in the crease last game? You all may have dicussed this already, but isn’t that supposed to be a penalty shot? Or is it only when you cover the puck with your hand?
Also isn’t someone aloud to just full on wack him with their stick when he’s down in the crease like that with the puck under him? Or at least get him in the face without making it look intentional? “I was just going for the puck, it’s not my fault his face was right in front of it.”
"Chris Pronger sneaked in the back door...banged it home."
Flyers Television Play-by-Play Man: Jim Jackson
We talked about it a lot in the game thread. The rule requires that he do something to put the puck under him, but what he did was lay down to block the shot and the puck ended up under him. That’s not a penalty. But yeah, the Flyers could have whacked instead of poked. The ref even allowed a few before blowing the whistle.

Okay, that’s what I thought but I wasn’t sure. I have to give Gill credit, it was a smart play for his gigantic size. I also noticed on a replay that it almost looked like Briere tried to kick him as he was falling down, gave me a good chuckle.
"Chris Pronger sneaked in the back door...banged it home."
Flyers Television Play-by-Play Man: Jim Jackson
he didn’t close his hand over the puck, he swatted it back under Halak, which I believe is okay for him to do. That said, somebody whacking Gill in the face in an “attempt” to go for the puck, would have been hilarious.

Another thing that may have been talked about, but did anyone notice Parent’s TOI from the last game, 2:25! Going back to HO’s point, we might as well dress 5 D men and get an extra forward out there so we can have Carcillo in. And I’m being dead serious.

Yesterday Geoff slamed me for saying Leighton is playing good and JVR is too. To me if three wins in the series are shutouts everyone is playing good. Yeah some might be hanging in there and I see a lot of luck to, but you need lucky and hot goalies in the end. I mean 3 shutouts the team is playing really good sorry to offend. That is why the haters of these guys haven’t been smashing them. Had we won those games 5-4 I’m sure they would be here pointing out mistakes that lead to goals. Off this comment I like the one from delco Character. It’s a word that has defined these Flyers. So has "defiant" and "persistent" and "relentless," which might be their most well-placed marketing logo ever. They ain’t kidding about RELENTLESS.
