The fans that voted, Is that for this season only or is that in recent/current performance? because Im very satisfied by the fact that they are always among the top 10 teams in the league almost every year.

I clarified. It was specifically “Ed Snider”, not “the team” as originally said.

You really think those percentages are unbelievable? Snider has been, for his entire tenure, one of the top 10 executives in the league. I’ll always be very satisfied with his performance as long as he continues to care this much.
no, when I initially read it, I thought it was “team performance”, not Snider’s performance. But the Holmgren numbers do surprise me.

the Bruins, with Rask, are basically our equal. that why both games have been 1 goal games, and literally won either in OT or a minute left. this series could be easily be 1-1 or 2-0 the other way.

I agree, it’s been very even. Obviously I’m hoping our luck runs out, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to wake up saturday tied 2-2.

It has been a very even series and you are right, a series tied at 2 is not totally out of the question, and if I am Boston, it is not the most disappointing thing in the world either. You guys are yet to lose at home in the playoffs and in a series like this, that is huge.

I just said it’s a psychological advantage, not a definite the Bruins are never losing a home playoff game.
Then again, part of that psychological advantage is not psyching yourself out that you have it in the bag, ala the Caps.

I'm confused.
And, no, not trolling.
Why exactly do you think the Flyers and the B’s are equal?
Goaltending? No
Defense? No
Offense? Yes
Special Teams? No
Coaching? Push
The B’s are better all around than the Flyers. If the Flyers can have Carter back, different story, but it’s also a different story if the B’s have Sidenberg and a healthy Savard….so.
Which B's team is this?
The B’s defense is better than the Flyers? Is that a fact?

Chara won a Norris more recently than Pronger, though currently the Flyers have a lower GA/G (with one more in the G category).
However, with an equal GF/G, Boston has a better 5-on-5 F/A ratio than the flyers. Not to mention the best PK.
All of this adds up to a big “maybe.”

That’s what I’m saying. It’s close… and certainly not a YES or NO either way.
(and with Green’s nomination, I’m convinced winning the Norris doesn’t necessarily mean that much)

Ur forgetting Seidenburg and Stuart are sitting right now.
Wideman is awful defensivley and McQuiad is a rookie who looks a little shell shocked out there.

Special teams are a wash too.
So its PHI Off and Def vs BOS Gtl

Nope, look at the stats
Bos better on D (goals against), Philly better on O (more goals scored), Special Teams are a wash (now that I look at the stats), and B’s have better goalies….so….
Which B's team is this?
and I'd argue that D and Goaltending win more in the playoffs than Offense does.
Can we agree on that?

Which B's team is this?
Are goals against a fair reflection on just the defense? Or do you think that goaltending might influence goals against?
New Zealand's 4th best Philadelphia Flyers fan
Not to mention the effects of a coaching/system change one team went through. But just looking at goals against overall isn’t necessarily a good indication of who has the better defense.
Maybe a better stat is scoring chances?
That would reflect the holes in the D, right? Problem with that stat is that it’s a bit too arbitrary. One man’s scoring chance isn’t another’s
Which B's team is this?
same with hits, statnerds use “away arena hits” for that. However, there haven’t been any away games for the Bruins yet, so I don’t know.
It’s tough to use numbers to prove your team is better, since someone else can usually use other stats to disprove you.

Well, if I had time to pull stats together here I would, but there are stats that you can find that can give you a better idea of who’s D might edge out the other. Maybe our resident stat experst can pull some together (MarioD, Geoff…anyone).
For now I have to leave work, and make my way to the game. Best of luck to you guys, as long as you don’t win tonight.
If it makes you feel any better, I think, given both teams injuries, they are very evenly matched. Boston was a team I didn’t want to play, one b/c I’ve always like the Bruins, and I don’t like hating them, and two, because they are just a tough team to play against, they always keep it close.
Could say the same about the Flyers, except change the “always liked them” to “always hated them”

It’d be tough to look at which team’s defense is better since the best place to look would be full season statistics. But with Seidenberg out, Krajicek only played here half the time, etc. it’d wouldn’t exactly be an accurate reflection.
In the playoffs, the Flyers have allowed fewer goals against per game (2.43 to 2.62), while Boucher has had a .934 even-strength save percentage compared to Rask’s .917. What do you get outta that? Not sure. Either Boucher’s been better than Rask OR the Flyers defense has been better than Boston’s. I would tend to believe the second one, since the Flyers are only giving up 29.7 shots per game to Boston’s 32.

That, in the NJ series, the team did a great job of keeping shots to the outside and/or blocking them, sometimes with their face. And that for the most part Boucher has played as well, or better than expected. It says something about the team D and the goalies performance. We are questioning eyebob’s logic there, not using our goalies line as a basis of ours.
I can’t speak for eyebob’s logic.

Again, "scoring chances"
in the NJ case, your D stood on their nipples to keep stuff to the perimeter, that’s a case for “scoring chances” as vague a stat as that is.

No idea. It would have to be something that “puts hair on your chest” as it were. Like one part tequila, one part whiskey or something.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Half a pint of Guinness, a half shot of Baileys, a quarter shot of Jameson, and a quarter shot of tequila. Make a mixed shot of the Baileys and tequila, drop in the Jameson, and drop the shot glass in the Guinness. It’s close to the original recipe for the Irish Car Bomb, replacing kahlua with tequila.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
That sounds flat-out nasty. Baileys and tequila would be a lethal mix.

Briere
I wouldn’t characterize Briere as a “clutch” scorer either. A clutch player in my opinion goes much more beyond stats. While Briere certainly elevates his game in the playoffs and he certainly has been somewhat clutch against the Bruins (2 GTG-to bad, we couldn’t capitalize on either), he’s not really at the echelon of guys who score big goals.
In fact, the list of guys in this league who are truly clutch is probably pretty small.
It probably contains some guy named Sidney and maybe a few others. In fact, AO might not even be on that list.

Actually, I thought Leino was at least good in the last game.
Unfortunately, Giroux isn’t being “hidden” so much on that third line. Maybe I’m speaking out of my ass, but my instincts are telling me that Giroux is playing against much tougher competition now then in the NJ series and probably who he played against in the Pittsburgh series last year.

True, but those 3 still there
and Rask too, makes for a pretty enviable place to be. Wings are easier to find than Centers and D can be bought fairly cheap. Ask me? If I had to choose, I’d choose to be strong up the middle and in net and be able to build around that.
The emphasis is going to be to sign Bergeron to a long term contract ASAP, which Chiarelli has had a penchant for doing (some for better, some for worse)

Reading Derek’s analysis over at C&B, makes me appreciate 1) how good a player Mike Richards actually is and 2) makes me wonder what Gomez would have looked like in the O&B vs. Briere. Don’t get me wrong, I like Danny, but I always wanted them to sign Gomez instead. Yes, Gomez has been killed for his price tag vs. lack of production, but the guy is absolutely a beast 5-5. He’s been great for Montreal in the playoffs as well.

by the way, Mike, Weiss is a center, and Weiss is one of the top 5 -2 way centers in the game (according to C&B’s article), so making this trade isn’t affecting your center depth.
Managing Editor - HockeyOutsiders.com
by HockeyOutsiders on May 5, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
It affects scoring depth pretty severely.
Over the last 4 seasons (when Weiss has played full or almost-full seasons), he has averaged 18.75 goals per year. Over the same stretch, Hartnell has averaged 22.5, and Carter has averaged 30.5.
(22.5 + 30.5) – 18.75 = 34.25.
In other words, Carter and Hartnell combine for about 53 goals per year. Remove them and replace them with Weiss, who will pop in 19. The Flyers will be expected to score 34 fewer goals if they make this trade.
We can assume that Giroux and JVR will increase their production next year, but putting the pressure on them to produce this year did not turn out so well. We also have to hope that Briere and Gagne stay healthy and produce at their normal levels.
I like Weiss, but this trade may be too steep. We’ve had enough trouble scoring as it is this year.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Well, any trade that sends two second-line forwards for one second-line forward will do that. You’re right to notice that, but look at the expected decrease in goals against when replacing Emery/Leighton/Boucher with Vokoun, plus Weiss with Carter.
I’m not saying you’re wrong at all, but it’s not a net-loss of 34 goals. Plus, you’d be getting a second-line center for three years at the bargain price of $3.1 million, as opposed to having to resign Jeff Carter after next year for more than his current $5 million price tag. For those that want a shake-up, this trade would do it.

exactly, plus if we’re using the what-if game, let’s also think about the following hypotheticals:
1. Weiss will probably be matched with better linemates than he currently has, playing a different system, so is it right to assume that he only pots 19 goals (his historical production) or that he scores 25.
2. Weiss for the last 3 years has outscored his opponents, playing the best possible competition. So how many less goals is a shutdown second line center (which Carter is not really) going to give up, meanwhile outscoring any competition vs. him. <<<(i think Geoff already alluded to this)

The drive from Boston area to Philly is not fun.

How easy is it to get from the airport to the arena?

It’s not too bad. About 20 minutes if traffic isn’t too heavy.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
20 minutes from getting off the plane and into the arena? Cause driving from the airport to the parking lot probably takes about 10.

If I had an extra $6-700 lying around I’d be cutting out of work early and see you guys there.

Yeah it would be a lot more tempting to fly out if it didn’t cost me so damn much. I am heading out there for a revolution at union game later this year, round trip was like 150

Keep in mind the 15 dollar StubHub fee as well, though. Still dirt cheap, but not $30

Yep, definitely just picked up tickets. I’m glad I work in South Philly though, because you have to get the tickets from the office at CBP and that place is going to be a zoo tonight.
I thought the office was in the Holiday Inn?
