Another Comcast Network shootout on Versus… are they not getting the ratings they were hoping for? I wouldn’t be surprised, given it’s on the Comcast Network + that it’s there means there’s a Phillies game on.
Great moments… are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here, tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we played ‘em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It’s over. I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ’em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.
Alright, I changed my shirt. Carter magic. He’s out but we need his boost. We’re ready, boys.

Beyond what just happened on the ice, we had another big problem there…..
You should never, ever, be able to hear the players yelling to each other on the ice during a a playoff home game in Philadelphia. That crowd being that quiet is just a travesty
yes
i thought i was crazy thinking the crowd being so tame.

They feel the Flyers are toast. No confidence from the fans—no confidence from the players. I agree they shouldn’t be that way, but sometimes you just know things aren’t going your way.

But I’m of the mindset that you let the team know when you like what they’re doing, and you let them know when you’re not happy too. That’s just me. I’m not a fan of the apathetic quietness,.

Considering we were debating whether we should even make the playoffs just a few weeks ago? Nope, not embarrassed at all, actually.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
Agreed.
We’ve been playing with house money since game 1 of the NJ series. We lost 2 of our top 4 forwards, our top PK, down to the 3rd goalie…. we’ve ran into the wall.

Well, similar things could be said about the Bruins. They were no lock for the playoffs; and the fact that they beat the Sables 4 games to 2 after the season record being (effectively) 4-2 for Boston makes that no shocker either. It was a good matchup for them, so it’s a very similar first round story.

I know what you mean, it’s just that we shouldn’t treat it like they “earned” their playoff spot and 2nd round trip more thoroughly than we did. They were no lock for it all season long or anything.

"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
2 ….at this point he’s either meant to do or not…if he reinjuried himself again then there’s somekind else going on. he has had plenty of time to heal and his load can still be monitired in the bigs.
There’s also questions about his mental makeup. Plus, you know Charlie would never use him. He likes established veterans.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
Not much anymore. I’m just saying what I’ve read and that Dubee has pretty much said they have to use what’s in their BP now, because they don’t have anyone down on the farm that can help (paraphrase, but that’s more or less what he said). Take that FWIW.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
I have read that too but I disagree with him. Clearly he knows more than I do but i think there are guys in the farm that can do better than some of the guys in our pen. Durbin and Contreras are the only guys who have done anything this year. I won’t judge Lidge yet but he looked great last night.

Yeah, I don’t agree with that comparison at all. Herndon was never thought to amount to anything—there are high expectations on JVR. Herndon doesn’t exactly blow, but he’s a GB pitcher, which maybe isn’t the right fit for a RP.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko
After spring training Hendron was expected to be a solid contributor in the pen.
There is nothing wrong with a ground ball pitcher in the pen, in fact, a ground ball pitcher is exactly what that team needs in that park. He may not be a strike out guy but if he could actually induce GB’s he would be fine.
Also Herndon’s era of 5.06 qualifies as blows.
Vic was a rule 5 pick too, doesn’t mean you can’t amount to something.

Well I wasn’t saying one month per say but clearly, in both cases, Herndon should be sent down and he probably will once Madson comes back unless someone(likely) get’s hurt again.
JVR should have been sent down long ago, or better yet, never started the year here.
Can't think of something catchy to say here...I suck.
I disagree that JVR should have ever been sent down. Starting the year in the AHL is one thing, sending him down is entirely different.
For the year, he had 1.72 points per 60 minutes of play. That’s more than Giroux, Richards, Carcillo, Betts, Powe, Gagne, Leino, and Laperriere.
He had a GAON/60 of 2.48, lower than Giroux, Powe, Hartnell, Briere, Carter, Asham, and Leino.
I don’t get all the JVR hate at all. How many chances did he create tonight, even? Just because he isn’t scoring now doesn’t mean he should be sent down. If that logic held, so should Hartnell.

I know where you’re coming from, in a way I think it’s a relative thing, too. If during one of times JVR was in a slump (because that average glosses over that he has really hot periods and really cold periods with point production, didn’t he?), there had been a guy in the AHL who was nearly ready and basically demanding an opportunity at the NHL level; I’d be mad JVR didn’t get a break and the other guy didn’t get a chance. But that never seemed to be happening, so it made it harder to rationalize sending him down, if sending him down didn’t obviously make the team better. The relatively readiness of the other forwards in Adirondack has an effect on argument, regardless of whether you felt he should stay or be sent down.

seriously increasing a load from a 40 game college load to an 80 nhl load is very bad. the shearing forces from that much intense skating could irrevocably damage the tendons and ligaments of the pelvis and lower back because his muscles unconditioned for such a dramatic load and intensity increase can fatigue to quickly and the connective tissue must shoulder the load.
I totally understand your point about physical effects, but I don’t see the difference between the NHL and AHL for a player like JVR in there. If he stays in the AHL all season, he still going to see close to 80 games unless he gets hurt. They aren’t going to rest him there; everybody else out of the NCAA (Nodl, for example), went from 40ish to 80ish even if they only jumped from NCAA to the AHL did a mix of NHL and AHL their first year. They still push them to play the whole season. It may not be right, but the potential damage of going from 40 games to 80 games should exist in both places, right?
by DragonGirl0583 on May 5, 2010 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions
that’s interesting…I just assumed that it would be less load but that’s it’d be the same is not good either. The greater intensity at the nhl level could be an issue but just by degrees. I would think that any differential in damge wouldn’t be drastic enough if the the loads are the same it any damage were to occur.
eek bad grammar the first sentence should read:
that’s interesting…I just assumed that it would be less load but that it has the potenial to be the same – either way it isn’t good.
The problem is if we send him down we have to work a deal with the Halos, and the word is the Angels would most likely want him back. He lacks a viable out pitch and unfortunately Dubee is not the guy to teach anything but a shitty cutter.
I have a feeling most are trying to learn their cutters from Doc. Dubee can’t teach shit.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luuko

All they’ve done is try to skate through 3-4 people at a time and have lousy power plays.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
We out played them for the most part tonight, we can do it again…get some bounces, this is still possible… you all can say whatever the fuck you want about me believing but it won’t stop me

It’s not over til the fat lady sings.
Anyone see the fat lady around?
Keeping it real. Keeping it fresh. Keeping it real fresh.
psst…maybe not the best analgy as we play a video of a rather large lady singing before the next game

But that only means this game isn’t over til she sings for the next one, right? I’m stretching, yeah, yeah, I know

Right. We outplayed them until they got a 3-1 lead. Then the Flyers couldn’t find their asses with both hand.
The worst hangover from the regular season is rearing its ugly head now. Faced with adversity, the Flyers wilt.
And I’m not hating on them or boycotting them or anything. I’m going to the game on Friday and I’ll cheer as loud as everyone else. I wish I still believed like you did, but I cannot even see them winning a game at this point. The Bruins have the Flyers’ number.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
There’s a difference between criticizing the team, not having tremendous faith that something that has only happened 3 times in all of American professional sports will happen and actually boycotting the team until something happens.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
I will NEVER boycott the Flyers. However, since I’ve been a fan since age 5, and since I hand over a nice chunk of change every year to go see 10 + games, I reserve the right to be pissed off.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I’ve been a fan since about the same age and you absolutely deserve to be pissed off. They wilted. AGAIN.
My point is if you are going to consciously avoid watching them because you do not like a player.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
You must be addressing someone else. The Flyers have had plenty of players I couldn’t stand and I’ve kept going.
Hartnell is seriously approaching Terry Carkner levels of hatred from me now, though.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
DT talked about not watching until they got rid of Hartnell.
You mentioned it and I just further elaborated on that point.
Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor."
Gotcha. We can just look away while he’s on the ice.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
You wanna know what the real sad thing about all of this is?
There was a very, very, very, very small, pessmistic part of me that was expecting this to happen(a.k.a. the stupid, history-laden part). And now, barring a Habs-like comeback for the ages(which is slightly possible), then well……you know. We are officially out of the butt and into the fuck at this point.
When was the last time the Flyers were swept in a series? 1997 finals? Darren McCarty… who’s now an analyst for Versus… who has exclusive TV rights to this series… it’s his fault for all of this, isn’t it?
I’m sorry did we lose 2 games tonight?

Given how helpful moral support was for the last game of the season….
If anyone who lives within reasonable distance isn’t going to Game 4 and wants to considering watching Game 4 as a group somewhere, it could be worth talk about.
I kind of made plans with my gf and she gets really mad when i break them…but i’d love moral support

Anybody look at the time on ice report? I must say I don’t like how Lavi is using his bench at all this series.

8:25 for Betts? Really?
You hit the nail on the head, the team looks gassed because the ones who get to see the ice are gassed.
Can't think of something catchy to say here...I suck.
Yeah, that nearly knocked me over. Also, Parent: 8:03

And gee I wonder, he bumps Asham up this time and Asham scored our only goal.
It’s weird, no doubt. He’s having a hard time with this, the gaps to fill are too wide. He’s missing guys that have range, and not ones that are easily replaceable… then he’s gotta replace 3 like that.
by DragonGirl0583 on May 5, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
But that’s the thing: In terms of ice time, Carter is being replaced by Briere, Gagne by Giroux, Lappy by Powe.
So how do you replace Briere, Giroux, and Powe? He isn’t. He’s not letting their replacements play. Nodl can easily fill in for Powe (or Ross for that matter), JVR could replace Giroux, but he’s only doing it every other game, and Leino is replacing Briere.
Yet all Lavi is doing is playing two lines overtime, and not using his fourth line.

lol, I’m only a part time Phils fan, but I can keep up some better than breaking down that Flyers game at this point

True, though.
The Flyers were due for a rare second-round loss. Assuming they lose the series, it will be their first second-round loss since 2003, and only their 5th ever.

The Islanders did that in 1975, and the Leafs did it in 1942 (come back from a 3-0 series deficit). Not bloody likely.

I meant at least the Flyers don’t have the best record in the league and get killed in the first round. No one thought the Flyers would make it this far, so there is that. /polyanna’d

Was surprised they made the playoffs, doubly when they won in the first round. This would be more disappointing if they had played well all year, and weren’t dealing with the key loses they are now. Not an excuse, but still…
