They’re a bunch of twenty year old guys that spend all of their time together. So I’m going to go with yes.

I’m just glad to go back to liking Pronger for the dick things he says. He never cross checked the back of my neck, so I’m much more forgiving.

It’s not like Pronger doesn’t invite it on himself, but I do think cup winners should be more focused on their own celebration rather than the failings of others.

It’s not uproar—it’s commentary. Why can’t we discuss it? I don’t necessarily find it hilarious, as you say—I’d say it was unnecessary, given the circumstances, but I don’t think it’s the end of world, either. These kids get paid an awful lot of money to play this game, and should learn how to comport themselves, too.

Let’s stop letting people off the hook, shall we? If you were being paid millions, somehow I think you could find it within yourself to not act like a 12 year-old.

I wouldn’t find it funny if the Flyers did it, either.

Wow

Sorry in advance if you guys don’t want Chicago fans around. I actually came here to see if anyone had posted this and wanted to read your reactions. If you don’t want Hawks fans in here, by all means I don’t plan on staying long. I just wanted to share my disgust about the trash they are talking about Pronger after the Cup is over. I mean I know he’s not an easy guy to play against. And I know his tactics are meant to irritate, annoy, and straddle the lines of what’s legal and what’s not. But no one on the Blackhawks should be surprised about this, at least to the point where they take time out of celebrating the Cup to rip on him.

Personally, I am a huge minority, but I respect the crap out of Pronger. The kind of person I am, I root for the people that find ways to do things differently, and maximize their strengths to get ahead in the world. I love the way that Pronger uses the media to his benefit and to get in his opponent’s heads. I love how he has his player or players to shutdown and he does everything he can to do so. He embarrassed Byfuglien this series. And he did get in the Hawks head.

I don’t know I won’t ramble. I guess I’m not surprised that Hawks fans hate Pronger, but I can’t believe more people don’t have more respect and appreciation for how he goes about his business. Not going to give the whole “you did great guys” speech that everyone hates to hear from the winner, but I do wish you Philly fans the best in the future. Philly has one of the top 2 fanbases in sports (can you guess who I think is number 1?)

by PhillyPhan85 on Jun 11, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

HIGHLY doubt that'll happen

Here’s what gives me a lot of hope:

XXX – Toews – Kane
Brouwer – Bolland – Hossa
XXX – XXX – XXX
XXX – Fraser – XXX

Keith – Seabrook
Campbell – Hjalmarsson
XXX – XXX

Niemi / XXX

Buff, Sharp, and Versteeg. At least 2 of those guys will probably leave. IMO, Sharp stays because of his versatility and because Chicago has better wingers in the system than centers. Buff and Versteeg are replaceable. Kyle Beach will probably be with the club next year on wing. Huet won’t be in Chicago, whether it takes picks, a good player, or a buy out. Niemi will be resigned judging from the interview with Bowman today and I can’t see Scotty letting Hjalmarsson go.

That’s how it has to be done in the league now. Keep the core, replace the rest with prospects and role players.

by Ban on Jun 12, 2010 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

How much

will you be paying to re-sign Hjalmarsson and Niemi?

Say you keep Sharp on the team, including Toews’ Conn Smythe bonus, but not including the cost of Hjalmarsson and Niemi, that puts you at ~ 44.5 million with 10 players signed. You’ll be looking at getting 5 forwards, 3 defenders (including Hjalmarsson) and 2 goaltenders (including Niemi) with 12-14 million cap space. Say Niemi goes under market price for goaltenders these days at 3 million (he just won the Stanley Cup, which means as a UFA he would be 4 million at least). This means that in a worst case scenario you have 9 million left to deal with 9 players. That’ll be a major drop in depth.

If you buy out Huet a percentage of his contract counts against the cap. If you waive him then you lose his hit but get nothing in return. You would be very lucky to get a decent trade for him, because teams will know that he is nothing more than a burden for you and you have to get rid of him. But something has to be done there, because with Huet on the roster you would have 50 million taken with 10 players and your backup goalie signed. That is, with Huet in and Niemi signed, you would have 3.5 million to sign 9 players.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 13, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly why Huet can’t stay. He will be gone one way or another. And yes, teams will know we’re in a pretty tight situation and will milk the organization and go for lopsided trades. I don’t see Stan having too many problems with that as long as the core is together and he can sign Niemi and Hjalmarsson.

Speaking of them, I don’t think Niemi will get any more than $3.5 mil, and I think even that might be too high. Yes, he just won the cup but he is still only 26 and hasn’t really proven himself. He’s played one season in the NHL (61 games including the playoffs). Hjalmarsson makes around $660 thousand right now and probably won’t be making much more than 3 mil. He’s a solid defensive player but if you’re basing his performance on points, he might not even get 3 million (only 17 points in the regular season this year).

It seems like you’re basing depth off how much a player makes (the $9 mil for 9 players comment sounded that way, sorry if I’m wrong). Honestly, Buff, Versteeg, and Bolland wouldn’t be making the kind of money they are now if the offers went out in time last summer. Fortunately, the pipeline has some pretty good prospects so hopefully they’ll be able to step in and take over. I know they won’t be as good as the players they’ll be replacing, but that will come in time and I don’t see the team taking a huge drop in talent (there will certainly be a drop).

The one thing that helps us was winning the cup. I do believe players some might take a smaller salary in order to join/stay with the team.

by Ban on Jun 13, 2010 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Holy schnikies…I was looking at the NHLNumbers estimates, and here’s another illustration of their problem, based on who they have signed (putting each player in their “official” position, not 100% on lines):

Sharp-Toews-Kane
Brouwer-Bolland-Hossa
?-Kopecky-Byfuglien
?-???-Versteeg

Keith-Seabrook
Campbell-Sopel
?-?

Huet-Crawford

Cap hit: $58.44 MM (Keith’s cap hit will be $5.551MM, Toews and Kane will each be $6.3MM after their extensions kick in). Since the highest estimated cap is $58.8 million, the Hawks are in cap hell. That’s without Niemi, Ladd, Madden, Hjalmarsson, or Johnsson, and with five slots completely empty. Cutting Huet would give about $6MM to fill six slots, which would include re-signing Niemi.

I don’t see a path forward for the Hawks without losing at least two of Versteeg/Byfuglien/Bolland/Sharp in addition to Huet.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on Jun 13, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Read my last comment.

Madden won’t be here. Johnsson is a rental and always has been and that has been known since he was signed. Huet will be gone. Ladd will probably be gone too. Sopel is probably on the way out, thought I wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed either. Eager will be replaced by Beach (who may prove to be an upgrade at a lower cap hit). Versteeg and Buff are probably on the way out. Bolland/Sharp are most likely staying because Chicago needs good centers (and yeah, Sharpie is a winger but his versatility makes him very well suited for the Hawks).

Niemi and Hammer will take a discount to stay for another chance at the cup. Cap hell is a large exaggeration.

by Ban on Jun 14, 2010 4:44 AM EDT up reply actions

True, but that $58.44MM already doesn’t include Ladd, Madden, Johnsson, or Eager, since they’re all free agents.

Let’s start with my scenario above, and work through releasing and adding players. I’m even going to be favorable, and assume Niemi and Hammer sign for the minimum qualifying offers.

Starting situation: 9 forwards, 4 defensemen, 2 goalies, $58.44MM
First move: Drop Huet. 9/4/1, $52.815MM
Second move: Add Beach. 10/4/1, $53.69MM
Third move: Sign Niemi. 10/4/2, $54.558MM
Fourth move: Sign Hammer. 10/5/2, $55.265MM
Cap space is $3.535MM to sign 2 forwards and a defenseman. This is a best-case scenario; I doubt Niemi and Hammer will sign for a combined $1.5MM.

If we work from your numbers minus half a million each (i.e. Niemi makes $3MM, Hammer makes $2.5MM), we get instead:
Third move: Sign Niemi. 10/4/2, $56.69MM
Fourth move: Sign Hammer. 10/5/2, $59.19MM, Over cap
Fifth move: Drop Versteeg and Buff. 8/5/2, $53.107MM
Need 4 forwards and a defenseman for $5.693MM

Honor is no substitute for victory.

Wasn’t trying to be confrontational, just correcting a mis-quote. Had I checked the profile I would have just let it go.

no worries. I wasn’t referring to you directly. And I’m very familiar with the first thing you quoted since allowing that to be quoted after Game 4 has one member of SCH saying I “instigated and initiated” the fight that broke out with a former BSH member saying “get out of here before I cut you”. So me and the arsonist/rapist theorist are well known.
