P.S.
Thank you for changing the header as well. I was in favor of the change in the first place. :)

Niemi will be back. If they have to trade Huet for a bag of pucks to free up the 6.5 mil then they will do it. They have to. There was an interesting write up at Jewels of the Crown about the Hawks cap situation. That team is on the verge of being irrelevant very soon. It’s kind of a shame, outside of beating the Flyers in the SCF I truly have no problem with the Hawks at all.

You’re assuming that any team would actually take Huet for a bag of pucks. A goalie making $6.5M who can’t win games is not very desirable. Think back to all the times we’ve called for Briere to be traded. Even if he doesn’t have the NTC, he’s still a hard guy to move.
I completely agree with you on this one. There aren’t many teams that want that contract even if it’s for a 6th round pick or something. But then again there are teams (Monteal, NYR, Toronto) that take on stupid contracts so you never know. Plus with Florida blowing up their roster this year they might put faith in him and grab him. I love Chicago, a lot less than Philly, but I really want them to get stuck with Huet just so they can’t be a dynasty. Although Niemi could fall apart next year such as Huet did. Goalies are so damn hard to judge from one good year.

I agree 100% that Huet is a hard guy to move, that contract is Tim Thomas like awful but I think they might be able to move him somehow. Can they send him down to the AHL where his contract would not count against them? I can’t imagine anyone would want him even for half his salary.

To the best of my knowledge, they can send Huet to the minors to get rid of his cap hit. Chicago will have to hope like heck that Niemi stays healthy, though. Calling Huet up will be difficult because of his contract, and their other backup (AFAIK) is Corey Crawford, who has a .906 SV% over 4 AHL seasons, slightly worse than Leighton’s .917.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Well I am going to take a guess and say that, that is exactly what Chicago will do. Bury Huet in Rockford and hope that Niemi pans out. If not they might go and do what the Flyers did this year with Leighton and try and find someone on the cheap. I don’t think Huet will ever appear in a Blackhawks uniform again.

They’ll try to move him, but I agree that he’ll probably be buried in the AHL this year and probably next year. Who the heck would take his contract now?
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Problem is they still have to actually pay him the 6.5 million to play in Rockford that is a lot and despite winning the cup I am not familiar enough with CHI Owners to know if they are will to eat that money. Before the cap our Flyers would spend over a ton in payroll so I know we don’t mind eating salary and Rathje is another example of that. I am not sure about CHI though.
I think Rocky Wirtz would be willing to eat the money. The Blackhawks have the most seats in the league, are obviously going to sell out every game this year, and are certainly doing well from whatever portion of merchandise sales they get. However, I think Wirtz is a good guy and wouldn’t sign off on demoting Huet to the AHL unless Bowman, etc. are unable to find him another NHL team.
by Ben Feldman on Jun 14, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions
The big problem they’re facing is carrying forward bonuses. They’ll have to eat at least $4MM or so off next year’s cap to pay this year’s bonuses, so their best case scenario is pretty much a $55MM cap.
Forwards
Signed for next year are Hossa, Kane, Toews, Byfuglien, Sharp, Bolland, Versteeg, Kopecky, and Brouwer. They’ll probably bring up Beach, because he’s on an entry-level, which is about $875k. That’s 10 forwards for $36.983MM, so they’re still 2 forwards short of four lines.
Defense
The Hawks have only four signed defensemen – Campbell, Keith, Seabrook, and Sopel, for a combined cap hit of $18.254MM. They need 2 defensemen as well, and are at $55.507MM already.
Goal
Of the four goalies Chicago used this season, Huet and Crawford are under contract, for a combined $6.425MM cap hit. Thus, Chicago’s total current roster (10 forwards, 4 defensemen, 2 goalies) combine for a cap hit of $61.932MM, or about $7MM over the cap they’ll actually have.
Hossa and Campbell are essentially untradeable – both are 30. Hossa has a contract until he’s 42, and Campbell’s contract lasts until he’s 37. Those are extremely high-risk contracts that I don’t see as tradeable assets. That’s going to mean dealing a lot of the $2-3MM men (Sharp, Bolland, Versteeg, Buffy, Seabrook, Sopel) and replacing them with minimum salary guys. If Niemi signs for $3MM, that will save $2.625MM over Huet’s contract, putting them about $4.5MM over, with 4 open slots – since each will be at least $1MM, we can safely say they need to cut $8.5MM in salary. Cutting Sharp, Versteeg, Byfuglien, and Sopel, and replacing all four of them with $1MM players will save $8.316MM in salary, close enough for a WAG. This would give the following roster:
Hossa, Toews, Kane, Bolland, Kopecky, Brouwer, Beach, 5 minimum salary forwards
Campbell, Keith, Seabrook, 3 minimum salary defensemen
Niemi, Crawford
*This also assumes Hjalmarsson is not re-signed.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
It also assumes they can move Huet without picking up any of his contract

They can drop him to the AHL. It’d be a last resort, since they’d still pay the salary, it just wouldn’t count against the cap.
But yes, I’m assuming everyone that leaves the Hawks gets cleared completely from their cap space.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Yes- but if they do that they would have a tough time bringing him back up if they needed him. From what little I understand of the rules they are really stuck unless someone is desperate enough for a goaltender that they will pay Huet’s salary…

If Huet goes down
They won’t be able to bring him back up as he would have to pass through re-entry waivers. And realistically someone would go for him off re-entry.

You think? Because I don’t know who would want him at half his current salary. The guy sucks.

Probably not any team in the east
But for teams in the west, if they have cap space, it has the double effect of truly stuffing up the Blackhawks plans and you get a goaltender at half price (even if he’s not any good). If the Hawks are putting Huet through re-entry they must be pretty desperate in that something would have had to happen to their goaltending situation that makes Huet an emergency call up. Turning their last hope into a punch in the guts is an opportunity a lot of teams would be willing to take I’d guess.

Yeah, if you want to bring Huet back up he has to go through re-entry waivers, and if someone claims him off of re-entry waivers, they only pay half his cap hit and you’re stuck with the rest.

So, in other words, if Chicago were to do this, and try to bring him back up, it’d be a brilliant move for one of their competitors out West needing an OK goalie to claim him, if for no other reason than to screw over what would be an obviously desperate Hawks team (desperate for needing to bring Huet back on waivers should Niemi falter).
I didn’t have much hatred for Chicago until the last few weeks, and I can’t say I do now, but there’s a big part of me that’s going to enjoy their salary cap realities coming July 1st (what a nice birthday gift, hah).
Only one comment… Why would Florida want to grab Huet? If I’m not mistaken, they have Vokoun, so why would they want Huet instead of him?

Good point, I just keep forgetting about Vokoun because I keep hearing that they have tried to shop him a few times, but then again they wouldn’t bring in an even bigger salary with Huet, so my mistake.

The buyout window opens tomorrow. I don't know about all that cap & salary stuff, does anyone know if/how a buyout would work for Chicago as a Huet option?
Also, he was 26-14-4 in 44 games last year — not so terrible. Niemi was 26-7-4 in 39. I think it’s also fair to say that Niemi got a lot more run-support than Huet.
I wouldn’t want Huet on my team, I’m just saying.

I think they would be more likely to send him to the minors
We were complaining about having to pay 1.5 million for Randy Jones all season. Imagine having to pay 1.875 million for a goaltender playing for some other team for multiple seasons.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 14, 2010 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions
You don’t think that would be better than paying him $6.5 million a year? What would it cost to buy him out?
by TopShelfTony on Jun 14, 2010 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions
OK so if they were worried about it from the business perspective, then the safer option is a buyout, because then they have to pay him only a certain percentage of his salary and he’s off their books forever.
However, if they are worried about it from a team perspective (which in some regards is the business perspective), then the better option is to send him to the minors. Here they would still be stuck paying him his full salary, and he would be by far the most highly paid player in the AHL, but he wouldn’t count against the cap. If he is bought out then he still counts against the cap, and the ghost of that will affect the team for a few more seasons in the future.

And that’s when you reassure yourself that we will have ours soon. It won’t be 10 to 13 years for our next return trip, and we have this year’s experience to help with our next appearance.
We have a good nucleus (heck, whole team really), a good coach, and a front office that has been surprising (in a good way) in its maneuvering, and, at the moment, I trust them to fill the holes we have. Much more good news than bad.

Agreed.
I’m never completely comfortable feeling anything akin to “optimism” in the off-season, and yet, let’s say I don’t feel excessively pessimistic this year. ;)
We have a window of opportunity here – with the right moves and a bit of luck, we can be back in the SCF sooner rather than later.

Problem is there are still the Caps and the Pens in the East to contend with, and both those teams have solid young nuclei as well. It’ll take some luck getting back to the Finals, and that goes for all those teams. The East is very tough with the Pens & Caps, and now the Flyers if they can continue what they did this post season next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got there 2 times in the next 4 years, or 0 times in the next 10 frankly.
Agreed. Home Ice is going to be key we need to have a better regular season and win the division to get home ice over the PENS. All though if they lose Gonchar which they might his injuries in the past have shown how different the PENS are without him.
Agreed, although I think Letang will continue to grow into Gonch’s role. I think this offseason will tell you a lot about the next few years. I’m interested to see how the Caps address their D and what they plan to do with Semin, what the Pens do about scoring on their wings and what they do with their D, and what the Flyers decide to do with Carter and their goalie situation. Also, it will be interesting if the Devils decide to change their philosophy, and if Hall will end up in a Bruins sweater or not. I’m pretty excited to see what this offseason has in store for the East.
Oh, sure – I wasn’t dismissing the Caps and Pens (or the other teams in the East, for that matter). It always takes a bit of luck, as well as skill, to get to the SCF (just ask the 2010 Pens).
I also completely agree about the regular season performance – winning the division would be VERY good for our advancing in the playoffs next year. (I’m STILL angry about our losing out on the #4 seed last year at the end of the year last year – that cooked our goose before we ever really got started.)

And
They’ve got 3 strong centers but who have they got — and who are they going to get with the cap in play — to put the puck in the net?
Also, if the playoffs showed nothing else they showed that if you’ve got the horses the track is a secondary concern.
Gonchar is/was a one of a kind guy, and I don’t think that Goligoski or Letang will ever be one of a kind players. Nothing wrong with them, just Gonchars come along very rarely. I kind of hope he stays because I think he’s on the downslope and even a 1 year deal will tie up a lot of cash.
You’ve got to think that the Caps are really going to put it together and steamroll to the Cup…or do you? They’ve had a pretty terrific lineup for three years now and what have they got to show for it? Lots of points in the regular season standings.
But they didn’t rep the east in the finals, did they?
They remind me of that team on the coast. The one that always does well in the regualr season and then…

And maybe...one day...Malkin will demand a trade!
OK this ain’t gonna happen…but we can hope right?!?
And on the Caps I think they need to add some solid defense. This year’s cup finals were about the shut-down defenders and depth up forward. They’ve got a great offense but they lack the shut down defenders.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 14, 2010 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions
If Malkin plays like he did this year
especially in the playoffs, I hope he stays. As long as he does they can’t afford a sniper for Crosby to feed.
Actually, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Malkin did move at some point.
The Caps will have to trade or go UFA to get shutdown D help. Carlson’s not one as far as I’ve seen (watch him right now in the Calder Cup on NHL Network — he’s scored one already), and Alzner is going to be a solid D but not a shutdown either. I don’t think they have anyone else coming up from the farm.
I have great hopes that the Caps will be the East Coast Sharks. Works for me.

Agreed, but they also need an upgrade in net – the Theodore/Varmalov tandem just isn’t playoff caliber. They have had that proven to them very rudely over the last couple of years.

Unlike the Hawks, the Caps have room to play with. Their remaining forwards (Ovechkin, Semin, Knuble, Backstrom, Laich, Morrison, Chimera, Bradley, and Steckel) are fairly reasonably priced, at about $34MM. Their five defensemen (Green, Poti, Erskine, Sloan, and Carlson) are about $11.4MM, and Varlamov’s $0.8MM (Theodore’s an UFA). They also have enough cap space this year to soak the bonuses I’m aware of, so they’re at 9/5/1 and $46.2MM against a cap of $58.8MM, so they have $12.6MM to pick up 3 bottom forwards, a defenseman, and a goalie.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Maybe they’ll sign Huet… ;)

Dual offer sheets and annoying the Rangers
As it’s offseason and all we can talk about is free agency due to our lack of draft picks. I was wondering what people’s views are on dual offer sheets and the possibility of making the Rangers hate us or the Devils more if that’s even possible. It’s something that’s considered to be no-go zone for many GMs, but then rivals don’t need to trade very often…
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 14, 2010 7:53 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, Burke and Lowe still hate each other over what happened with Dustin Penner a few years ago.
People would have hated Clarkie for that offer sheet for Kesler (it was the first one after the lockout and the first one altogether in some ridiculous number of years) but they already hated him to begin with.
The problem is that the Flyers don’t have a 2nd round pick in 2011, so they only have 4 options – one of which (under $1,029,448) does not require compensation at all. The three options:
- Between $1,029,448 and $1,559,770, costing a 3rd round pick;
- Between $3,119,540 and $4,679,310, costing a 1st and a 3rd round pick; and
- Over $7,798,851, costing four(!) 1st round picks
It seems pretty obvious they aren’t going to offer the last option, and it’s highly unlikely they offer the one not requiring compensation (you either get a not-very-good player or give up picks). So really, they only have the legitimate option of gambling a 1st and a 3rd (and not having any picks in the first three rounds next year) or a 3rd.
If there are players you have in mind, I might change my mind, but that doesn’t seem like a good bet for the Flyers.

Oh forgot about our perennial lack of second rounders. The Copper and Blue article has a few possible ideas which I just wanted to make people aware of, but I didn’t really have any particular ones in mind. Nabbing Carey Price for a second rounder was attractive, as was the idea of getting Hjarmalsson for a 3rd rounder to be our no. 4/5. We don’t have the cap space or picks to hurt the Rangers on their re-signing of Marc Staal.
And I generally think the rules are fair. The only players you would offer more than 7.8 million to as RFAs are named Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby. Considering we essentially traded three first rounders and Joffrey Lupul to Anaheim for Chris Pronger, trading 4 first rounders for Alexander Ovechkin is fair to ask.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 15, 2010 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I like the idea, I just don’t think it’s feasible this year. And you’re entirely correct about the rules being fair, but as seen with the Penner debacle, some GMs and most fans don’t, so it’s a risky option.

I honestly don’t understand, why everybody is all like “you were lucky that you didn’t have to face Ovechkin or Crosby, that’s not gonna happen again, so you’re screwed.” What the hell? I really can’t stand that people belittle what the Flyers did in this post-season by claiming such things. In the first round we faced the 2 seeded Devils with infamous Brodeur, Kovalchuk, Parise… Was it easy? Despite winning the series in 5 games, it was not. Do I really need to say what we’ve done in the 2nd round against the Bruins? And no, I don’t think the Canadiens were easy to overcome either. With that said, I believe that we could beat anyone… including the Caps and/or the Pens (and yeah, even the Hawks, we could). And if we get to face them in the next playoffs, I’m sure we’ll do just that. Am I too optimistic? Whatever… I’d rather be let’s say delusional than keep crying over the fact that this probably was the last Simon’s chance to win the Cup.

I do agree with it though to an extent. We had an unproven career back up who played well but he and the rest of our team had the benefit of playing teams that flat out do not score goals. The team that fought for every inch also lucked out in a sense not having to face the Washington’s and Pittsburghs of the world. They played 3 teams that they matched up well against, that doesn’t happen often and they aren’t good enough to just beat anybody as Chicago was. I am optimistic for the future but I can’t sit here and say that the Flyers are a top 3 team in the East right now because they aren’t.

What if Broad Street Didn't Fight Back? History HAS been made. 5-7-10
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Yeah, I can agree that they aren’t a top 3 team. Yet I don’t see it as a reason why should I count them out for the next 10 (or more?) years. I’m not gonna sit here and whine about how we blew our only chance in many years to come. That is BS. As much as unrealistic it may sound, I believe we can repeat our presence in the SCF, yes right in the upcoming season.
I love the Lightning AND the Flyers... go ahead, preach me!
Dare to follow my childish, biased, petty and cheesy alter ego.
