SB Nation Philly Launches Next Tuesday, Come Join Us For A Launch Party

You may have noticed over the last week or two that SB Nation has rolled out the first group of many regional sites. New York, Boston, DC and others are already live, and next Tuesday, June 22, SB Nation Philly goes live.
The initiative has picked up a ton of press in the sports journalism world, from the New York Times, Harvard's Journalism Lab, PR Newswire, IUPUI's National Sports Journalism Center, Paid Content and more.
SB Nation is holding a launch party for the new site next Tuesday evening from 5 PM to 8 PM at The Field House Sports Bar on Filbert Street. It's located across the street from Reading Terminal Market on Filbert between 11th and 12th, right in the heart of Center City.
There will be drink specials, food specials and a ton of free giveaway items. I should be there, and I believe Geoff will be as well, so it's a great chance to come out and meet us (and each other).
If you're planning on attending, please RSVP here. If you're in another part of the country, there will be SB Nation meet ups coinciding with the launch of our other regional sites. Just ask and we can point you in the right direction.

Separate writers for this site, or is it basically a RSS feed for the individual team sites, with maybe note pieces from an editor sprinkled on top?
At least with Arizona it is run by one of the editors of the local site, but has wholly independent content while also providing streams for the team sites. I’ve already had some issues with the negative press that the SB Nation Arizona site has given to the Coyotes…it’s bad enough fighting the Canadian press without fighting your own colleagues…

They forced you into a name change, eh?
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
I don’t know if “forced” is the right word. I was strongly encouraged to use my own name in order to help our odds of eventually earning Coyotes press credentials. Seeing as my employer knows I write for the site and that I’ve used my personal twitter account and email address, it wasn’t too hard to give up the user name.

Really? Why would the site have negative stuff on the Coyotes? Who writes it?

It’s just folks that write about Phoenix sports. The guy who I’ve spoken to about it runs the Suns blog and he said that while they are willing to give me equal time to push a pro-Coyotes agenda, he thinks that their editorial voice most accurately reflects the Phoenix market. We’ll ignore the fact that one of the big problems with the Phoenix market is that nobody gives the Coyotes positive press ever…

haha, that’s pretty poor. Why would they try (or aspire) to emulate an already existing opinion?

Because it’s easier to write the same story somebody else has already written. (See: ESPN)

Yeah, it is disappointing. And while I generally respect the guy, and like what they are doing with the regional site as a whole, I find myself not feeling a need to push it to hard on our readers at FFH. What is funny is that they did a poll about where the Coyotes should be and when it was hijacked by the Winnipeg folks and 64% of the vote was for “Canada”, they got all pissed off about it. For us it was, “welcome to a day in our life.”
I really think the biggest problem is that the folks on the site don’t really know too much about hockey. So while they don’t want to be giving the “fan voice”, it ends up just being the lazy retreads because that is all they know of the game. That was what disappointed me the most.

Check the other ones for an example:
It’s completely unique content, but it’s going to leverage the team sites quite a bit as well.

Can’t—finally moving into my new house that week, so it’s going to be crazy around here. Would love to meet you all sometime. Maybe a game next year?
I also don’t play the sport at all, but if you guys have a BSH meetup to play again in the near future, I’d be good to heckle from the seats. We are Philly fans, after all. I’ll play the part of sign man (or sign woman, as it would be in my case). I’ll be taking recommendations for snark, naturally.

Even though I’m in decent shape, I always tend to get hurt when I play collision sports. So the next time y’all get together, I’ll come and supply the organ music. I might have to do “Brass Bonanza” at least once. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

I’m not above driving up there if promised a Bartulis jersey…

Oh the Field House. Their cheesesteak fries are delicious, if expensive. I’ll be there, and I think ohnickels will be showing up a little later on in the evening.
I'll be there.
Should be an interesting mix of the five (?) Philly blogs on sbnation.

It’s including college teams? I’m disappointed that only Villanova has a blog on here. I’d think that Temple has a large enough alumni base to get a blog on here.

It basically depends on quality of blogs currently on the web. SBN doesn’t really bring in blogs or bloggers that haven’t been doing it for some time, or that aren’t quality. If none exist, the chances of SBN starting a blog for them is pretty slim.
That said, I don’t know the quality of the Temple blogosphere… if there is a quality blog, feel free to pass it along to me and I’ll hand it off to our college manager and they’ll take a look. We’re always looking to add quality blogs to the network.

Yeah, I’m massively disappointed there isn’t a Pitt blog. Since I’m no longer a student there, it’s hard for me to keep up with the team, so I’d love if there was one. But the policy you described is really for the greater good.

It was just more of a general comment (and family bias – everyone over the age of 22 went to Temple). I really like “On the Banks”, the Rutgers blog here. The Penn Staters don’t like me :(
