Jose Theodore 10-11 Starter?
I keep hearing this rumor pop up- that the Flyers may sign Jose Theodore. Anyone have thoughts on this? On the one hand, he's famous for choking and being overpaid for it. On the other hand, he's usually pretty reliable during the regular season. I believe there was a stretch this year where he had 24 straight wins. If Homer could sign Theodore for $3 mil or less on a two-year deal, would you be OK with it (currently wrapping a two-year, $4.5 mil deal) ?

WHAT!
I will chain myself to the Skate Zone doors in protest. How is that for an answer?

No no no no no no!
I don’t want an undersized goalie with the new equipment rule changes coming for pads to be reflective of physical size, especially one that has consistency problems.
For the 24 wins, I would check his GAA and SV% as well as GF by the caps over that stretch. I’m willing to bet he didn’t win them many games during that run, but I’m willing to be proved wrong.
You’ll find that at the start it was the Caps’ O, by the end Theodore was holding them in. He also stole some games this season, like a gem of a win over Detroit. He’s historically a lot better in contract years.

I guess if we want to get worse then Leighton, by all means. I mean, the whole reason the Caps got eliminated in the first round was because they had the two worst starting goalies in the playoffs. Not just THE worst, but they actually had TWO starting goalies that suck. Silver lining, they have a 50/50 chance thats a prospect will be at least serviceable.

Well, the reason the Caps were eliminated this year was Jaroslav Halak more than anything. Semyon Varlamov was 3-3 with a 2.41 gaa and .908 s%, or roughly similar to Brian Boucher (6-6, 2.47 gaa, .909 s%).

I thought you liked Boucher? That was kind of mean for you to compare him with Varlamov… Just saying

I do like Boucher. I just think higher of Varlamov than most people.

Caps play zero defense and hang there goalies out to dry. If the Flyers defense gets credit for Leighton’s performance the Caps defense or lack there of should gets blame for Theodore and Varlamov’s performance.
So what about the other 10 teams that Theodre has played for?

...
He’s awful because he’s blown one playoff game and was poor in one game against the Flyers?

I have this urge to just start argueing that Theodre is the answer since everyone is agreeing that he sucks…

No wonder – he’s the answer to the question, “Which veteran goaltender really sucks?” ;)

Yeesh
I’ve been following the latest news pretty closely. I’m not a Caps fan (over8ted!), I just heard about this rumor and was curious. Berniers out of the question, Schneiders still a ???, price or halak asking price is high, and Leighton is Leighton. Ellis, to me, would be another Biron (I.e. Serviceable). Jose Three or Four isn’t a great option either, but he was the starter for the best team in the league during the regular season and the shittiest defensive team in the playoffs.

if we were to go back 10 years
i’d be okay with that, he was pretty good in 2001

No- I had no idea about that at all (and feel kind of ashamed now). It’s a line from Ace Ventura and the original line from the movie is “Dan Marino” not Jose Theodore. I meant it as a joke in terms of everyone “hating” on Theodore…
