hmmm, someone mentioned trading Carter for the #4 overall pick from C-Bus…that pick projects to be Cam Fowler or maybe they opt for Connolly instead?

Ehh. Fowler’s not NHL ready, so all you’re doing at the NHL level is opening up cap space while losing scoring and not fixing goaltending. You can use the money to get a solid #5 D-man to pair with the Wolf, afford Dan Ellis (since you no longer have the parts to trade for a goalie, and we’re assuming he’d be a more consistent Michael Leighton, no?) and an upgraded Arron Asham for that third line. And someone to fill in that spot on the top line. Of course, you fix the lack of top prospects in the system, but I think the organization’s still in “win-now” mode, knowing the situation after this upcoming season.
That’s all entirely true. But you then have three stud defensemen in the system (Bourdon, Marshall, Fowler) and cap space at the NHL level. Yeah, it is kind of a sideways move. I’m not sold on it, but I’m not opposed. Maybe if they throw in a 3rd rounder?

It’s projected to be Fowler, but I would take Gudbranson too if he falls.
A question: what do you feel Marshall and Bourdon’s ceilings are?
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 16, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m under the impression Marshall’s is higher than Bourdon’s. Marshall is more of a defensive defenseman and Bourdon an offensive defenseman, I think — or, at least in theory. Marshall had the stronger season in Adirondack, too, from what I’ve read from Tim McManus. One prospect we never talk about but should is Joonas Lehtivuori, who had a hell of a season.
All three are still a good year+ away from full time NHL action, probably.
Yeah, no one mentions Lehtivuori because no one knew about him before this season. He was the Phantoms best defenseman last year, too.

Having cap space is not necessarily a bad thing – it lets you take advantage of the trade deadline fire sales.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Having cap space is without a doubt a good thing.

It’s nice to see a little Asham bashing and a little less Leighton and Carter bashing… Sarcasm intended.

How about opening for “The Shitty Beatles?”

A fresh look at trading Jeff Carter courtesy of Ronnybrook from the BlecherReport.
He actually looks at recent trades involving big ticket players and points out how the seller always gets screwed.
Woo-hoo! Let’s trade him right now! Wait, what?

I wish some people would proofread their posts…
I get a little put out that people consider Jeff Carter a 40 goal player. He’s reached 40 goals once in his frigging career.
Do we consider Patrick Marleau a 40 goal scorer now that he hit that mark for the first time this season? I mean who is on this magical 40 goal scorer list? Parise? Is Gaborik on it, he’s scored 40 twice in his career….Is Semin there now?

Well, he is only 25 and hit it. Gaborik has about 5 seasons where he would have scored 40 per 82 if he stayed healthy. But even if hes a mid 30’s scorer, I’d rather him be listed as a 40 goal scorer while hes being shopped around, to raise the return.

Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
If you hit 40 goals you are 40 goal scorer. It is not like he wasn’t close with 33 despite missing several games he could have gotten there this year. I still and always considered Gaborik a 40 goal guy. HockeyOutsiders has a MarioD like hatred for Carter who did lead the team in both points and goals and broken feet during the regular season.
I love Carter
and would rather trade Hartnell or Gagne instead, but:
A) the NTC’s that those two have
B) Carter will have the better return
But still, unless its for a top 5 goalie prospect or halak, I’d rather just keep who we have. If LA, Mont, or Van doesnt want to trade, It would be stupid to settle for less.
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
That was the point the Blecher report was trying to make. In any trade scenario for a 2 for 1 we would be giving up the best the player, hopefully we can pull another Recchi for LeClair and Desardjin. If not I am okay with just resigning Reechi.
Unless we can take advantage of a team like Vancouver knowing that their elite goalie prospect won’t make the NHL with them, or a team like Anaheim if they are having trouble signing Bobby Ryan.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 16, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
so then in your book Jonathan Cheecho is a 40 goal scorer too. I’m sure we can trade Ottawa for him quite cheaply if that’s the only requirement to be on the magic 40 goal scorer list.
I don’t hate Carter, I just realize that he’s a moveable asset to improve the team. Last time I checked hockey is still a business.

Jumping in here
Yes, Cheechoo is a 50 goal scorer because he scored 50 goals in a season. You can argue that he won’t ever do it again (and I doubt you will find anyone at all that will disagree with you) but you can’t go back in time and say that he didn’t do it. You can also look at his career numbers and say that year 2005-2006 was a statistical anomaly (it certainly looks like it was). Or you can look at other players who have scored 40 or 50 goals and claim that it is no big deal as you seem to suggest with Parise, Gaborik, Marleau, Semin though I’ll take any one of those guys on the Flyers or my Fantasy Hockey team (sans Gaborik too much injury risk).
If you want to argue that Carter is not a premier player or is worth more to the Flyers in a trade by all means. If you are going to argue what constitutes a 40 goal scorer (besides scoring 40 goals in a given season) then all your really doing is arguing semantics…

Truth in every point.
Usually I think saying I told you so is great. Who doesn’t like to be proven right when a lot of people say you’re wrong?
BUT…
I would HATE to be proven right on this one, but I know I am.
Trading Carter would be a huge mistake.

My question is
That say we keep Carter. Which one out of Leino, Giroux, Carter and Gagne are you going to let go at the end of next season?
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 16, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
The good part about that is you can answer it next year and focus on this season.

My point is that it is unlikely that Jeff Carter will remain a Flyer for more than a season anyway. I’d much rather lose him in a trade where we get some good value (especially if Bobby Ryan’s negotiations continue to fail) than lose him in some salary arbitration mess in late July 2011.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 16, 2010 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Got that,
And my point is he is more valuable to this team now in the 2010-2011 then in any of the practical trades that are possible. Bobby Ryan is a nice pie in the sky kind of wish but he’s not coming here. Even in the 1-100,000 chance that Ryan does come here, I’d like to win a cup in 2011, not 2013…

Sadly,
though, it appears that pro sports management types have absolutely no use for my advice.
To be fair, I never indulge in the practicalities they have to live with like NTCs and salary caps and all.
My comments on Carter are not based on him being my favorite player or stats, their based on my gut feeling that:
Trading Carter would be a huge mistake.
You just knew I was going to say that.

I also believe it would be a mistake to trade Carter. There just aren’t any deals I see out there where we get quality value back for what we are trading away.

Nah
I was a good kid, but I had to be. It was just me and my Dad growing up because my Mom died when I was so young. My parents acted more like children. There’s nothing wrong with being semi-responsible. If you know anything about me on here, you know I have plenty of other flaws.
