The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired the rights to one of the most sought after free agents-to-be on defense in Nashville Predators blueliner Dan Hamhuis.

On Saturday afternoon, the club announced it had traded defenseman Ryan Parent to Nashville for Hamhuis and a conditional pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Hamhuis is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, so the Flyers will try to sign him to a deal as soon as possible.

If Homer's able to sign Hamhuis to a reasonable contract, this is an excellent deal. Fair to assume the Flyers will only get the draft pick if they can't sign Hamhuis?

This says to me that the Flyers will not be going after a higher-priced free agent goaltender, and will either get a Bernier, Schneider, etc. or a Leighton, Ellis, etc.

The other big question: is the writing on the wall for Coburn? As an RFA, his rights could be valuable.

Dont really understand why we did this unless Coburn is asking for big time money. I think he is better than Hamhuis he was a monster down the stretch. Hamhuis apparently wants 4 million a year. Hopefully we can keep them both and find a way to get a decent goaltender. If we keep them both we will undoubtedly have the best defense in the league.

I keep seeing Bernier's name mentioned

but it appeared to me last season that Murray and Lombardi are only interested in keeping him and having him as their #1 sooner rather than later.
Why do you include him?
(Don’t get me wrong — having him would be a dream: he is terrific.)

He’s worth mentioning, but I don’t see why L.A. would trade him now. Let him and Quick battle it out, see who wins, and trade one of them either at the deadline or next offseason.

That’s what I was thinking but I’ve seen him mentioned a lot so…

Hamhuis is incredible

What a great deal. This way, we have a young core going forward — we won’t be resigning Timonen unfortunately, but then you get a nice pairing of Hamhuis + Coburn next year, whlie this coming year we can roll out 5 defenders who are capable instead of just 4.

I think this is insurance against Coburn leaving, but I think Hamhuis is better than Coburn. Coburn might have more potential, but Hamhuis is one of the best D-men in the league — a top 2 pairing guy, I think. Unless I’ve read wrong?

Kimmo is under contract until 2013 which point he will be 39 years old.

Now wait a minute

I’m talking trade with IcersGuy. I’ve never thought of Gary Bettman as being the overtly masculine type, so I’m thinking “missy” is not the NHL commish who can veto trades

I like it still need to keep Coburn unless we are going to move his rights for a goalie.

Yeah I hope this trade wasn’t secretly replacing Coburn with Hamhuis, because I’m not sure how I feel about that.

This is exciting...

…although I will be sad to see Parent go, if only because of this:

(And this and this.)

Those were good times, eh?
