Columbus Interested in Jeff Carter?
This is purely conjecture, but Matt Wagner over at The Cannon said he's been hearing rumors of Jeff Carter being traded to the Blue Jackets. I doubt they're concrete but they make sense for the same reasons Jonathan Bernier to Philly make sense: Team A has excess of a position that Team B has a need in, and Teams A & B have a history with each other.
So I wrote a scouting report on Carter for them. No, I didn't make the offer, I simply dropped names.

No, but I certainly took the opportunity to talk about Matt Calvert.
I think my trade offer is fair, even if Matt is low-balling worse than Randy Marsh when he wanted medical marijuana.

That’s the Boston rumor, and if that rumor is true (Savard and Wheeler for #4), no way the Flyers get what they need and that pick.

It’s actually in my opinion team A having a need for a player from Team B, and Team B having a need for a player from Team A.
They need a goal scoring Center (Carter), we need a goalie (Mason). I could see this happening.

Well, I’m not convinced Carter is the pivot Nash needs, but the more I repeat my trade offer (Carter/Boucher for Mason/Filatov/Calvert) the more I like it and think it makes sense.

I agree with you Geoff…I personally think Carter and Nash would not fit well together at all. But, that would be the B.J’s problem, not ours.

This is the first Carter trade I’ve heard that I would be happy with.
Of course, that almost guarantees it won’t happen.

Nor his contract/cap hit. Why down grade at center in this trade. You need to upgrade your wingers. Umberger doesn’t fit this deal.
This is just a fun rumor anyway. I’m not the biggest fan of the parts in this trade, and as Geoff pointed out several times, I don’t think Carter is the type of center the BJ’s want to play with Nash.
Well, this is a rumor I don’t see coming true (for what’s it’s worth = who knows?).
If it happened, I’d want Umberger back.

Not only that, but $3.75m cap hit isn’t exactly optimal. The Flyers would still have the same two problems (too many centers, not enough cap space), making the trade pointless.

So now the trade needs to be for franchise wing + top tier goalie + cap space?
Haha, you are smoking crack.
Let's break this down:
A “franchise wing” that went to the KHL because of disputes with the organization, only played 39 professional hockey games last year, and isn’t even guaranteed to be at camp next year.
A “top tier goalie” who had a good rookie season and then had a 3.05 gaa and .901 s% last year, eventually splitting starts with Mathieu Garon?
Filatov is a risk who doesn’t like it in Columbus and Mason is a 3rd round draft pick who had one good year and one terrible year. They aren’t untouchable.
And don’t forget that Carter is a franchise center who has actually produced in the NHL for 3 straight years.

Mason had over 2/3 of the starts.
But they need to make the playoffs next year, and I don’t think they can win with their current level of production. Regardless of who is in net, they need more goals.
Yeah, but Garon got 7 of 8 starts in January after alternating the last 8 games in December. Mason definitely struggled and lost starts because of it. He did get 14 of the last 18 starts on the year, and 18 of the last 23, but at that point…
He had a bad year, which goalies have, but when he’s had a good one and a bad one, he’s not a “franchise goalie” yet.

Umberger did play pretty well on the wing with Richards during the playoffs in 2007-08.

Me neither, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t reasonable. I doubt Columbus moves Mason and I doubt Philly moves Carter. But this trade makes a lot of sense from the Flyers perspective, probably less sense from Columbus’. And it’s not the pieces they’d be giving up that makes it unlikely, it’s that Carter isn’t the center they’re looking for.
Danny Briere is more of who they need, but he’s too expensive and not valuable enough.

Yeah, I was hoping last off season he may have been signed by us because I feel he would have helped on the wing very well, and he was pretty cheap too. If New York doesn’t re-sign him, Homer should jump on him, I’d like him to be our FA forward we add this off season.

That was a good year.
Oh, nostalgia. I would also love Umberger back, despite the astonishing impracticability of it all.
All of the 5 we lost apart from Lupul I would be happy seeing back in Flyers uniforms. However, I also don’t want to see Gagne, Giroux, JVR or Leino in other teams uniforms…

haha well not completely. I could have left him off the list but I needed 4 names of people I wanted to keep for completeness. If he proves these playoffs were a fluke, then I wouldn’t mind him leaving for the right offer.

Will he take a slight salary cut to play wing (since he likely won’t produce as much on the wing as he would in the middle) if he’s offered, say, a 3-year deal? Then I’d look into him, yes.
Same. I’d also look at Mark Recchi as well.

I’d love Recchi to come back – wherever he plays, he’s always a Flyer-on-loan in my eyes.
I think he has said that he wants to end his career with Boston, and that they want him to stay as well. He’s earned the right to end his career as he wishes.

I don’t think goalie is the issue, post lockout poor team speed and questionable D was a bigger factor. Over the past few years they have wasted many solid goalie performances by Nitty and then again this year : 11-28 L 0-1, 12-10 L 0-2, 12-19 L 1-2, 1-1 L 1-2 (OT), 1-24 L 1-2, 2-3 L 0-1, 2-6 L 1-2, 3-5 L 2-3 (OT), 3-23 L 0-2, 4-2 L 0-1, 5-31 L 1-2.
With a stronger team D and a full camp to get into Lavy’s system I think adding some scoring should be enough to help bring along Backlund (with Boucher spotting him a some games while he gets adjusted to the longer season). While they develop some of the younger goalies in the system. Chemistry is a big issue. They have drafted or developed almost half of the current roster, which in the era of the cap is the best way to build instead of depending on over-paying and committing to acquire other teams FA’s.
Trade Carter & Hartnell (might waive his NTC to play with his good friend in a new city) or Carle (pair Pronger with one of the Phantoms) for Iginla.
Sign Hamhuis, Coburn, Asham & Powe. Once this team starts taking shape it should be easier to lure a vet with a scoring touch Recchi, Selanne, Whitney or maybe Armstrong.
Gagne – Richards – Iginla
Hartnell – Briere – Leino
JVR – Giroux – Recchi

pipe dream
i doubt the flames would ever move Iginla. But I share the sentiments on Recchi on the third line and Colby Armstrong on the 1st line. I would absolutely let Carcillo walk and I think they should, Powe is more important with what he does on the penalty kill and cheaper. And if we cant get Recchi, resign Asham, he’s a steal at what his salary is, and while he isnt the best 3rd line option, he’s pretty solid and keeping the JVR-Giroux-Asham line together is something I wouldnt have any problems with. Id rather go with Lappy-Betts-Powe permantly, move or let Carcillo go in the interest of getting some more cap room to sign Hamhuis or go after a guy like Colby Armstrong depending on what other trade(s) happen.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jun 22, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions
also
I would def not move Carle, his combo of defense and offense is too valuable to lose. I want Carle here for a while. He isnt as shut down as Pronger or Timmonen, but his 2 way ability for me, puts him in the Big Three as I like to call it of Timmonen, Pronger, and Carle. Coburn is the much better option to move if we have to move another defenseman.
If we can sign Hamhuis, then Hamhuis and Carle should be the present and future of this team’s defense one Pronger and Timmonen are finished. Although hopefully both will still be around and effective for awhile. And I think they will because of how big of studs they are at their age and how much they love and work at their game.

gonna say what I said on the Cannon
I don’t see a fit in Columbus. Carter scores goals but he isn’t a setup guy. Columbus needs a playmaker (among some other things besides a sniper)(Plus if Filatov stays, we will have a great young sniper in him so Carter isn’t necessary). And some of the trades ideas are not in CBJ’s favor. I’m a fan of both looking out for both interests here. The Savard/Wheeler/15th overall pick seemed more viable then Carter/Boosh for Mason/Filatov/Calvert…i like the word “pipe dreams” I can see working out a deal for Calvert/Filatov but not Mase/Filatov/Calvert…. they are committed to Mase(it seems) so probably have to offer up more then that to get Mase from CBJ.
Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.
If it was up to me, I'd free Charles Manson... -MRH
I’m gonna say this. If Mase was to go to Philly, I wouldn’t be broken over it. Philly is a very established team and most players would love to go and play from them. Columbus, on the other hand, is relatively new so I am really pulling for them to turn it up and make a big statement in the next few seasons. No one seems to want this team around but a select few(me being one of those people) so I want nothing more then to prove people wrong and show Columbus is a great hockey town with a great team to match it. We just need to get the right pieces to fit and I just feel Carter isn’t that piece to fit in our mold. I want to see both my clubs thrive and do well in their perspective conferences (Columbus Philly Stanley Cup would be my “dream”, i know i know snowballs chance…) but right now I got to look out for Columbus because they are walking on a razor’s edge right now, so we need to be meticulous about how we go about it. If it happens, it happens….just hope it works out either way for both clubs.

Yeah, I get the feeling that Columbus isn’t moving Mason, but he should at least be asked for. The problem is that Filatov/Calvert isn’t enough for Jeff Carter. It’s just not.
But again, Carter doesn’t fit in with Columbus, so they won’t be asking for him. I don’t know why people threw out that rumor. But I still say Mason/Filatov/Calvert is a lot closer to what Carter would return in a trade than Filatov/Calvert, two guys with a combined 21 NHL games played.

I should of put … with the Calvert/Filatov mix. I completely agree with you tho, I didn’t mean it to sound like that is enough for Carter. I want whats best for both teams. Columbus just needs to tread carefully, we can’t afford to take too many steps backwards.
I wish I knew more about Lalande, he seemed to show some promise but with the little NHL experience he has, it would be hard to just bring him up now and throw him to the dogs.
