So we have all seen what the wonders of a grilled cheese can do for Giroux…but what about this:
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!

Holy crap. 1500 calories, 97 grams of fat, and 2090 milligrams of sodium. That’s 75% of the calories for a 2000 calorie RDA, with 149% of the fat, 190% of the saturated fat, and 91% of the sodium a person’s supposed to have in a day.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
So? what’s wrong with getting all your calories and sodium for one day, a day and half worth of fat, and two days worth of saturated fat all in one shot?

That’s nothing compared to the blooming onion at Outback Steakhouse. Check out these stats:
2,710 calories, 203 grams (1,827 calories) of fat, 194 grams of carbohydrates, and 6,360 milligrams of sodium, with as much fat as 67 strips of bacon.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
But is that for an entire blooming onion or per serving? I don’t know many people that order an entire one for themselves.
Still, even if you eat half of that, it’s friggin ridiculous amount of calories, fat and sodium.
I bet Man vs. Food would eat it.

looks tasty, but as Travis pointed out in the URL, it’s totally true, I’m sure that’ll give you a heart attack if you eat it all at once, but I’d try it once, half one day, the other half in a few days after I work all of it off.

maybe it’s just a PR move on the part of the Blackhawks to help make up for the “Pronger is gay” thing in their locker room, but good for them anyway. And especially good for Sopel, his quote in that story shows he’s a terrific person.

What is the deal with Josh Harding ??
I heard Anthony San Filippo on 610 WIP mention Josh Harding as a potential draft day goalie for the Flyers. Who is Josh Harding would he be a good fit and can he take over a number 1 job in the NHL?
He is young and his numbers are in the same boat as everyone else and his cap hit should be in the 1 – 2 million dollar area. You guys who know the West Conference how would you fell about Josh Harding starting next year.
I don’t know. The truth is, the Flyers don’t need anyone special in net. They just need someone more consistent than Michael Leighton at “making the saves he needs to make.” If Harding can stay in position and stay square to the shooter (which it would appear Jeff Reese is good at helping goalies with) and not have an exploitable five-hole, plus has a little bit of confidence so that a goal or two against doesn’t knock him off his angles, he could be as good of a choice as anyone, quite frankly. If the Flyers are going to have this excellent defense that most of the time will keep shooters to the outside, they don’t need to overspend on a top-notch goalie. So it could work.
by Ben Feldman on Jun 22, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m guilty of it too, but Harding is more of a name than anything. He had one good year (08-09), but two below average years (07-08, 09-10) for a team that’s generally pretty defensive. He’s a gamble, and I’m not convinced he’s any better than the other names we’ve heard.

His career numbers are pretty good and MIN is so hard to evaluate goaltenders because they are a Defense 1st team. But LeMaire wasn’t there last season and the did as a team allow a 21st ranked 2.92 GA/G. Backstrom got 60 of the 82 starts and he is a stud. Harding actually had a high save percentage than Backstrom by a mere 0.002. So I am not sure if they should be considered a really good defensive team last year.
Harding for his career 82 GP 0.915 SV PCT and 2.66 GAA.
Funny how in that one good year 08-09 he went 12 GP 3W 9L with 0.929 SV PCT and 2.21 GAA.
Geoff where would you rank Harding with the 1B goalies with NHL experience with Ellis, Nitty, Leighton, Biron. And if you had your pick of that stellar bunch who would you take. I think this is route the Flyers are going to take in net a 26-30 RFA backup.
Those numbers are above average, yeah. But like you said, it’s tough to evaluate Minnesota goaltenders.
Of those five goalies, I’d rank them: Ellis, Biron, Harding, Niitty, Leighton.
But I’d probably slot Boucher/Backlund in right around Ellis, Biron. With both of those two signed for next year, I don’t see those five being a big enough upgrade in net. Ellis would be an upgrade, but at what cost? Biron would be an upgrade, but at what cost? Harding, I’m not even sure if it is an upgrade. Niitty is too injury prone and inconsistent (if he could only get it together…) and Leighton, we know how I feel about him.

If Nitty could be consistent, especially with his angles, I would put him above everyone else on that list. Unfortunately he seems to be what he is, and I would agree with that grouping. There really isn’t much separating Ellis/Biron/Harding/Nitty. The only thing is, it’s hard to say what to expect from Harding if he is handed the reigns, he may become dominant, he may be terrible, or he could be right in the middle of that pack like he is now. I view Ellis/Biron as upgrades to Boucher/Backland, and Harding/Nitty are most likely upgrades depending on what you get. But it comes down to cost. How many wins will any of them get the Flyers, and how much more will they cost for those additional wins.
Shrink that to the $950-$1.5 range and I agree. Maybe not Ellis, but he falls in your range at least.

Dunno yet. Dreger says it’s Horton and another Panther for one Bruin, so Lucic, Krejci, Savard, Chara are the only Bruins I can see going back. Seriously doubt the Bruins would trade Bergeron.
Do you think they really would move Chara? Wouldn’t one of the other three be more likely?

Nathan Horton on being traded from Florida:
“I’m not saying anything bad about the organization, but there have been five coaches in the time I’ve been there. Now, I’m going to a stable, historic organization. I’m going to give it all I’ve got. I think it’ll be good.”
Bruins have got to be hoping he was holding a lot back. Florida’s got to be thinking good riddance after hearing that.

So a guy getting that kind of $ should dog it?
January 11, 1976
by TopShelfTony on Jun 22, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t really consider that “dogging it” and my point really is if he said something to the affect of “This is both a happy and sad day for me. Happy because I am looking forward to the challenge of playing in a organization with the history and prestige of the Boston Bruins. Sad because I’m leaving a city I love with a loyal and passionate fan-base and a great organization dedicated to winning.” It wouldn’t be bullshit; it would be BULLSHIT.
He’s really stuck because the best he could do is say nothing and athletes do not get away with that.
And I don’t agree that his statement necessarily means that he wasn’t leaving out on the ice every night. I can’t really say either way because I haven’t seen him play much.

"Now, I’m going...to give it all I’ve got." = "I wasn't giving it my best." = "dogging it" IMO
Yeah, I hear you. It was the “Now, I’m going to a stable, historic organization. I’m going to give it all I’ve got.” that had me PO’d. That stable, historic organization got that way and stayed that way because guys always gave it all they had. The Bruins weren’t such a fabulous place to play when Orr got there. This guy’s no inexperienced kid — he’s averaged 70 games a year for 6 NHL seasons. I mean, he’s had a microphone or two in his face a couple of times, right? And he knew he was traded well before he gave the quote. And he couldn’t say, “I asked Dale Tallon to trade me and he did. I’m looking forward to showing my team mates and the Bruins fans my best effort. That’s one historic original six franchise.”? Instead he tells them he only gives it all he’s got when he feels like it? I think his new team mates heard that loud and clear.

Why? Flordia is exhibit A for NHL over-expansion.
If they’re Exhibit A, then Exhibits B, C, D, E, and F are Nashville, Colorado, Atlanta, the Islanders, and Phoenix, all of which have worse attendance (and all except Nashville are worse in both absolute numbers and percentage of seats filled).
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I actually would have put Phoenix as exhibit A if it wasn’t for the fact that technically they were moved, same could be said for Colorado I guess but I am surprised that the Avalanche have poor attendance…

Thought it couldn’t be Savard or who would feed Horton — that wouldn’t have made sense. Do the Bruins go after Boychuk now — what are the cap implications?
January 11, 1976
by TopShelfTony on Jun 22, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Boston traded away 3.875m in cap hit. They got back 4.000m and an unsigned RFA who made $800k (cap hit of $762k) last year.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Thanks Dark. So not any better a picture for the Bruins to go after Boychuk, in fact not as good? If so, good news for the Flyers — I still think Boychuk is going to be a very good player for somebody and it might as well be us.
January 11, 1976
by TopShelfTony on Jun 22, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
With the trade, they’re at $50.453m, with 8 forwards, 4 defensemen, and 2 goalies. They can probably keep Stuart around his current salary, since he’s RFA, but they need a lot more forwards. Boychuk, being UFA, is more of a question mark. If they can come to terms with Yuri Alexandrov and bring him over from Cherepovets, he might be worth bringing straight to the third pairing and PP.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I don’t get the feeling they’re done dealing if only for the cap/forwards point you make.
January 11, 1976
by TopShelfTony on Jun 22, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions
If I’m Boston, I’m looking to move Chara, Ryder, or Thomas. Chara’s an UFA at the end of this year, and is the highest-paid player with a $7.5m hit. Yes, he’s a great defenseman, but that also makes him a good piece to deal. Ryder is also an UFA after this year, at a $4m cap hit. You don’t want to move Bergeron or Lucic, and Savard’s deal out to age 40 makes him undesirable to a lot of teams. Thomas has a $5m hit, and may be on the downward slope. Replacing him with Rask and calling up Regan as Rask’s backup would clear a good amount of cap space.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
My guess would be they’d prefer to move Ryder and Thomas if they can and enjoy at least one more year of Chara. Do you think Chara’s cap hit would make him as undesirable as Savard’s deal makes him?

Apparently they’ve been flogging Savard around the league since they lost out in the playoffs. I find that hard to believe: who’s going to feed Horton if there’s no Savard? Maybe they changed their minds when they saw they could get Horton?

I could almost see Florida flipping that pick for a pair of lower picks – a later first rounder and a second rounder, perhaps. They’ve got a full team right now (actually 11 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies, but they have 3 RFA forwards in Kreps, McArdle, and Tarnasky) and are waaaaaaay under the cap. Picking up more prospects might be a goal for them, to stock up for a couple years down the road. They’re not going to be challenging for the Cup next year, so getting as many guys in the system as possible would make sense.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Ben was doubting ownership’s willingness to spend. In light of that who knows?

I think they want to clean house before spending on new players. They’ll be willing to spend once they’ve got a decent core put together, but without a solid foundation, there’s no point in paying for star players.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Tallon’ll certainly liven things up and the deals he makes will likely have some domino effects as well. I’d love to see him move way up with that pick and maybe a player or use one/some of his other 4 top 50 picks. Watch and wait I guess.
Interesting that Plekanec gets what’s believed to be six years, $30 million with an annual cap hit of $5 million. There aren’t a lot of centers around. Think they overpaid?

The Phils have been a very good team over the last two years, and have had most everything go “right” for them over the past three. The trend is bound to reverse at some point… and to me, “some point” is now.
They would not have lost a game like Saturday’s last year or two years ago, that’s for sure.

BREAKING NEWS: Post has learned NHLPA votes YES on 5-percent cap escalator and extending CBA
Great news for the Flyers. That $2.8 million will help a lot. Good news for the league on the CBA extension (even if it’s just for one year).
so Pronger has to play 2 more good seasons before we get a free buy-out that is the CBA expiring, the NHL locking out and the salaries being rolled back again…nice

That is great news, more cap room! Now with that I see Hamhuis getting signed most definitely, Coburn getting re-signed, and I don’t feel like we will have to be worrying about the cap so much. I just hope that number is right.

It’ll never happen. The players just screwed themselves!
Oh, and JVR sucks.

Does this help out the B’hawks much?

A little, but not much. Not as much as the Flyers anyway. The Hawks are still a long way off getting a team under the cap.

Helps us
but also every other team in the league. Especially those pesky Blackhawks who are no longer above next season’s cap if this goes ahead. I was looking forward to seeing them try and bring their team down by 2 million while adding 8 players.

Also:
Hawks telling teams that price for Byfuglien is a first-round pick and a prospect
Good luck with that.
That’s laughable. :)

Hey, if he wants to take a SERIOUS pay cut and play behind a great defense he is more than welcome in Philadelphia. Won’t happen obviously.

He could go to the Flyers to prove that all those playoff failures weren’t his fault. Or not and ruin all chances we have of winning the cup

I particulary liked this part about the former defensive coach;
He had some faults (playing Randy Jones so much, for one)
You think Stevens would play him any less?

Great minds (although this one was kinda obvious). Maybe all those people formerly associated with the Flyers can influence a trade for Bernier

It's all actually a plot
We take over their front office…and then….BAM…LA Kings become Flyers’ farm team to go along with Nashville.
